:00:00. > :00:10.Storm Gertrude has battered much of the country.

:00:11. > :00:13.From Shetland to Saltcoats, storm-force winds and heavy rain

:00:14. > :00:16.have caused transport disruption and damage to property.

:00:17. > :00:19.Dozens of schools were closed and thousands of homes

:00:20. > :00:24.Around 1,200 properties in the north remain without power tonight.

:00:25. > :00:43.The country woke up to a battering as Storm Gertrude made her presence

:00:44. > :00:48.felt. Cyclist and joggers were undeterred in Glasgow. How is your

:00:49. > :00:53.cycle to work this morning? Is going very well, despite the strong winds

:00:54. > :01:00.today. You are committed. Not really, mad! Others found the walk

:01:01. > :01:04.to work a struggle and diversions because of unsafe buildings made the

:01:05. > :01:08.commute even more miserable. Across the country, there was travel

:01:09. > :01:13.disruption. The Forth Road Bridge was closed all morning. In Orkney,

:01:14. > :01:18.it was just too stormy for these ferries to brave the journey. An

:01:19. > :01:24.overturned lorry cause delays here near Stirling, and it was a big

:01:25. > :01:28.operation to write this lorry. Throughout the day, people had been

:01:29. > :01:32.working to get train services back to normal but when I was there at

:01:33. > :01:35.the morning rush hour, it was a front picture. At this time of the

:01:36. > :01:40.morning, you'd expect this station to be far busier than it is and that

:01:41. > :01:44.is because trains are cancelled on the west Highland line so you can't

:01:45. > :01:49.get to open or Fort William. If you're trying to get to Inverness,

:01:50. > :01:54.you can get as far as Perth beef for the services are cancelled. And the

:01:55. > :01:57.usual every 15 minute Glasgow to Edinburgh train is running every

:01:58. > :02:02.half an hour. Outside Central Station, taxis picked up people

:02:03. > :02:06.running late. I'm coming from Paisley but it has taken me twice as

:02:07. > :02:13.long as it normally would. It hasn't been ideal. The queues have been big

:02:14. > :02:20.for the taxi. Normally there are a lot of taxis here, but Barack many

:02:21. > :02:26.about. Are you late? Yeah. At the height of the storm, 12,000 people

:02:27. > :02:28.were without power. Our weather forecasters have been monitoring the

:02:29. > :02:34.development of Storm Gertrude through the week, and we have moved

:02:35. > :02:38.resources, engineers, support staff, mobile generators into position

:02:39. > :02:43.right across the Highlands and Islands to be ready to respond as

:02:44. > :02:47.quickly as possible. On the Shetland, where winds reached over

:02:48. > :02:51.100 miles an hour, as will as Orkney and the Western Isles, schools were

:02:52. > :02:56.closed. Pupils in other schools, like this one in Edinburgh, got a

:02:57. > :03:02.day off, too, and the scaffolding at this building site toppled over. The

:03:03. > :03:05.worst of the winds might have passed us, but it'll take time to repair

:03:06. > :03:08.damage that has caused. Shetland has borne the brunt

:03:09. > :03:11.of the gales, with a red "danger to life" weather warning

:03:12. > :03:13.in place throughout the afternoon. The gusts have been

:03:14. > :03:26.among the highest ever It has been an exceptional day of

:03:27. > :03:28.wind here in Shetland. We have had hurricane force winds battering the

:03:29. > :03:35.islands most of the day, the strongest winds up at 105 miles an

:03:36. > :03:38.hour. The Met Office says that even though Shetlanders were used to

:03:39. > :03:46.strong winds, this has been exceptional. We have hurricane force

:03:47. > :03:51.12 storms in January, but these gusts are pretty unusual, it is

:03:52. > :03:55.pretty close to the highest gust speeds ever recorded. It has been

:03:56. > :03:58.surprising there's been relatively little damage in Shetland. There was

:03:59. > :04:03.a fan blown off the road earlier today, a few roof slates have, but

:04:04. > :04:07.according to the place that's because the people of Shetland have

:04:08. > :04:11.been prepared and they saw this coming. The decision was made to

:04:12. > :04:16.close all the schools to make sure no children were danger. The public

:04:17. > :04:21.seem to be staying at doors and setting the event out. There are

:04:22. > :04:25.been no reports of significant damage so far, no injury to anybody.

:04:26. > :04:29.Shetland seems to have been relatively unscathed by these

:04:30. > :04:34.exceptionally strong winds. Around 400 properties were left without

:04:35. > :04:37.power for a short while. There have been no interisland ferries, no

:04:38. > :04:43.interisland flights, either. Flights from Shetland down to mainland were

:04:44. > :04:47.called off at 1pm. The worst of it is passed although we understand it

:04:48. > :04:51.will be another blustery weekend and Monday we are warned they could be

:04:52. > :04:54.strong winds returning again. Hopes are high in Shetland it won't be

:04:55. > :04:56.quite as strong and we won't have 100 mile an hour winds again.

:04:57. > :04:58.Ferries serving the islands on the west coast have experienced

:04:59. > :05:00.disruption for days now, thanks to the weather.

:05:01. > :05:03.Ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne said all of its 26 routes had been

:05:04. > :05:07.affected either by cancellations or delays because of today's storm.

:05:08. > :05:10.With wind and snow to come, many services are now cancelled

:05:11. > :05:23.It is going to be particularly bad tomorrow and it won't improve until

:05:24. > :05:27.Sunday, so, at the moment, most of the services will be subject to

:05:28. > :05:31.cancellation and delay extending into tomorrow, and then, hopefully,

:05:32. > :05:32.once the weather improves, we will look to make additional sailings on

:05:33. > :05:33.Sunday. Every council in Scotland

:05:34. > :05:36.which isn't run by the SNP has branded the Scottish Government's

:05:37. > :05:38.deal on council funding Council leaders on the Convention

:05:39. > :05:41.of Scottish Local Authorities voted by 21 to seven today to reject

:05:42. > :05:44.the government's offer. Four councils which aren't part

:05:45. > :05:46.of Cosla are exploring Finance secretary

:05:47. > :05:50.John Swinney called the offer Councils have until a week

:05:51. > :05:56.on Tuesday to respond. Andy Murray is through to his fifth

:05:57. > :05:59.Australian Open final. To win it for the first time,

:06:00. > :06:04.he'll need to defeat the man who's beaten him three times

:06:05. > :06:20.in previous Melbourne finals, They've never known a Grand Slam

:06:21. > :06:24.quite like it. They came to support Andy Murray. They arrived on court

:06:25. > :06:30.knowing two other Scots had already reached Melbourne finals. Could he

:06:31. > :06:33.make it a tartan trouble? The big serving Canadian did his best to

:06:34. > :06:42.spoil the Scottish intake by breaking Murray straight away. First

:06:43. > :06:46.set, Milos Raonic 6-4. The Murray metal was well and truly tested but

:06:47. > :06:50.Heath picked a fine time to break his opponent's serve and levelled

:06:51. > :07:03.the match. A titanic tussle in the third took us to a tie-break with

:07:04. > :07:06.Raonic revelling in the arena. There were two kinds of pain for the now

:07:07. > :07:12.reeling Raonic. The physical one in his right leg, and the mental one

:07:13. > :07:17.when Murray broke again right at the start of the deciding set. Not the

:07:18. > :07:22.only thing that got broken. Having sat to his spirit, the Scot served

:07:23. > :07:27.for the match. A place in his fifth Melbourne final assured and a place

:07:28. > :07:33.in history with the Murrays of the first brothers to make finals at the

:07:34. > :07:38.same Grand Slam. It is something that is going to be extremely rare,

:07:39. > :07:42.you're not going to see it often. So we should enjoy it and be proud of

:07:43. > :07:48.it because it is a tough thing to do. The brothers aren't the only

:07:49. > :07:53.Scots in the finals. It is a tartan trio thanks to Helen Weed who is in

:07:54. > :07:57.the finals of the wheelchair singles and doubles. Two days, three Scots

:07:58. > :07:59.going four four Australian Open titles.

:08:00. > :08:01.Christopher has the weather outlook for the weekend for us.

:08:02. > :08:09.Brace yourselves! Good evening and what date it has

:08:10. > :08:15.been with Storm Gertrude sweeping through. Weather watchers sending in

:08:16. > :08:21.pictures of felled trees. Here's a snapshot of some of the highest wind

:08:22. > :08:25.gusts we've seen. 105 miles an hour, the highest winds, in Lerwick.

:08:26. > :08:30.Staying windy tonight. We have a wide scale yellow be aware warning

:08:31. > :08:34.and an be prepared warning for the northern and southern parts of the

:08:35. > :08:41.mainland with the risk of gales and snow. To stop the weekend, pretty

:08:42. > :08:45.windy conditions from the West and frequent snow showers to all levels.

:08:46. > :08:48.Away from the immediate north-west coast. There will be disruption on

:08:49. > :08:53.the roads if you're driving of a higher parts of the road network.

:08:54. > :09:00.Across the UK, the Lions share the sunshine across England and Wales.

:09:01. > :09:06.The temperatures, but add on the winds, it will feel bitterly cold.

:09:07. > :09:11.Let's take a look at mid-afternoon. The showers going through, but there

:09:12. > :09:15.be some dry weather, even some sunshine. The showers are hit and

:09:16. > :09:21.miss, but if you catch one, it will be snow. The winds in Aberdeenshire

:09:22. > :09:26.still strong to gale force. And potentially up to severe gale in

:09:27. > :09:30.exposure. The showers easing down through the evening, the winds

:09:31. > :09:35.easing back, but then there's the risk of ice. To Sunday, we are

:09:36. > :09:41.bringing in some milder air from the south. This were the front bringing

:09:42. > :09:48.rain across the West and south-west. For the north-east, drying up.

:09:49. > :09:52.Temperatures slightly up and the winds lighter. Monday, though,

:09:53. > :09:55.another deep area of low pressure with the potential of further

:09:56. > :09:56.damaging winds. That is the forecast for now.

:09:57. > :09:59.Our next update is at 5:50pm tomorrow evening.

:10:00. > :10:03.But, from everyone on the late team here in Glasgow and around
