:00:36. > :00:37.but there is another beaver population in Scotland,

:00:38. > :00:40.Four years ago the Scottish Government scrapped plans to trap

:00:41. > :00:45.On Tayside, landowners have said that the beavers damage woodland

:00:46. > :00:48.and cause flooding, 21 have been confirmed shot.

:00:49. > :00:50.Beavers shot on Tayside are brought here to Edinburgh

:00:51. > :00:54.The post-mortem results obtained by BBC Scotland show vets have

:00:55. > :00:57.We now know beavers which were heavily pregnant or had

:00:58. > :00:59.recently given birth are among those killed,

:01:00. > :01:10.that has led to calls for a close season on animal welfare grounds.

:01:11. > :01:13.And questions have been raised about long it would have taken

:01:14. > :01:18.If somebody has used a gun to shoot and the animal has moved and moved

:01:19. > :01:23.out of range and the animal has been wounded, that is sad but that,

:01:24. > :01:29.unfortunately, is a product of a situation where a lack

:01:30. > :01:32.of action by the authorities over the years has effectively left

:01:33. > :01:36.being the only ones doing the management in that area.

:01:37. > :01:39.The beavers are here and the Scottish Government has

:01:40. > :01:41.decided to tolerate them, so it is really up to them

:01:42. > :01:45.to reflect public opinion and give them some protection.

:01:46. > :01:46.A spokeswoman for the Environment Minister,

:01:47. > :01:59.Campaigners fear that decision will not come

:02:00. > :02:01.until after the Scottish elections in May,

:02:02. > :02:02.leaving Tayside's beavers without protection during this

:02:03. > :02:07.A man and young boy have been seriously injured in an alleged
