:00:48. > :00:52.hospital having been caught up in an avalanche on a popular mountain area
:00:53. > :00:57.between Spean Bridge and Newtonmore. The avalanche was seen by other
:00:58. > :01:04.climbers in the area and rescue teams and a coastguard helicopter
:01:05. > :01:08.was scrambled to the area. They were taken to hospital in Fort William
:01:09. > :01:14.were one of the men was pronounced dead. Both are believed not to be
:01:15. > :01:21.local to the area. The coastguard helicopter was in fact at the time
:01:22. > :01:26.looking for two other climbers who are missing an Ben Nevis, Tim Newton
:01:27. > :01:30.and Rachel Slater from the Bradford area. They have not been heard of
:01:31. > :01:35.since they set off to climb Ben Nevis at the weekend and fears are
:01:36. > :01:39.growing for their safety. Tonight it is understood that Rachel Slater's
:01:40. > :01:44.parents have arrived in the area to find out the latest in the search. A
:01:45. > :01:47.decision whether to resume that search will be taken tomorrow
:01:48. > :01:55.morning depending on weather conditions.
:01:56. > :01:57.An intensive search began last night when the three hikers failed
:01:58. > :02:02.to return from a planned walk in the hills near this village.
:02:03. > :02:07.They were named as Jeffrey Stewart, 74, George Crosbie, 73,
:02:08. > :02:11.and 64-year-old Bobby Thomson, or from Dumfries.
:02:12. > :02:13.Experienced hill walkers familiar with the area,
:02:14. > :02:15.we know they parked up here yesterday, the car
:02:16. > :02:21.They went for a walk and were expected to return around
:02:22. > :02:28.At its height, the search involved police, four search and rescue teams
:02:29. > :02:42.Conditions last night were described as appalling.
:02:43. > :02:44.The guys were saying they could barely stand up
:02:45. > :02:48.Visibility was very low, so searching was really difficult.
:02:49. > :02:50.The men had left no details of their intended route,
:02:51. > :02:54.and the search area was up to 40 square miles.
:02:55. > :02:56.News came through just after one o'clock that the coastguard
:02:57. > :02:59.helicopter had located the men in open countryside around
:03:00. > :03:04.They were said to be in a poor condition.
:03:05. > :03:07.The crew took them on board and transferred them to hospital
:03:08. > :03:13.It has since been confirmed that one of the men was pronounced
:03:14. > :03:21.The other two are being treated for hypothermia.
:03:22. > :03:25.A man who abducted and raped a 15-year-old girl on her way home
:03:26. > :03:27.from school in Dunfermline has been jailed.
:03:28. > :03:30.26-year-old Mark Armstrong subjected her to a harrowing ordeal
:03:31. > :03:38.Mark Armstrong had spent the days beforehand robbing and assaulting
:03:39. > :03:46.Then on Thursday the 12th of March, he committed the crime
:03:47. > :03:50.that was today described as cruel, depraved and inhumane.
:03:51. > :03:54.He kidnapped the girl as she returned home from school,
:03:55. > :03:57.threatened her with a knife, forced her onto the grounds
:03:58. > :04:00.of a derelict cottage, and raped her.
:04:01. > :04:05.That and what followed shocked detectives with years of experience.
:04:06. > :04:11.It's horrific, what this 15-year-old girl has been subjected to.
:04:12. > :04:13.There is really nothing I can compare this to,
:04:14. > :04:16.it is worse than I have dealt with in my 22 years' service.
:04:17. > :04:20.From the cottage, Armstrong marched his victim for miles,
:04:21. > :04:23.eventually ending up at his Dunfermline home,
:04:24. > :04:30.26-year-old Armstrong only spoke to the girl to tell her what to do,
:04:31. > :04:36.As night became day, there was another return
:04:37. > :04:40.Armstrong initially said he would let her go,
:04:41. > :04:46.He took her back to his home again, and then he made her walk
:04:47. > :04:52.Finally, in the early hours of the Saturday morning,
:04:53. > :04:54.the 32-hour ordeal ended here at the entrance
:04:55. > :05:02.He had walked her here, given her her mobile phone and left.
:05:03. > :05:04.She called her mother, who came to get her.
:05:05. > :05:08.Police described the mother hugging her daughter.
:05:09. > :05:12.The girl was shaking, crying and occasionally howling.
:05:13. > :05:17.Today at the High Court in Glasgow, the judge handed Mark Armstrong
:05:18. > :05:20.a lifelong restriction order and told him he will have to serve
:05:21. > :05:23.a minimum of four years in prison before he can be
:05:24. > :05:27.There will be no assessment carried out and no consideration
:05:28. > :05:32.by the parole board for four years, but that does not mean he will be
:05:33. > :05:38.The key element is the lifelong restriction.
:05:39. > :05:40.What that means is that Mark Armstrong will remain under
:05:41. > :05:44.the supervision of the state for the rest of his life,
:05:45. > :05:48.and he will remain in custody until such a time as it is assessed
:05:49. > :05:51.that he no longer presents a risk to the public.
:05:52. > :05:56.He already had a number of convictions for crimes
:05:57. > :06:00.of violence, and police say it is due to the courage and bravery
:06:01. > :06:08.of his 15-year-old victim that he is back in jail.
