:00:09. > :00:12.The former first minister Alex Salmond says it's time to look

:00:13. > :00:15.again at currency options for an independent Scotland.

:00:16. > :00:17.While Mr Salmond still favours using the pound, he believes

:00:18. > :00:21.independence arguments need to be "refurbished" so they can't be

:00:22. > :00:24."gazumped" by opponents in any future referendum.

:00:25. > :00:29.Our political correspondent Glenn Campbell has the story.

:00:30. > :00:32.In the referendum debates, questions over what currency

:00:33. > :00:40.an independent Scotland would use were crucial.

:00:41. > :00:47.You can't tell it what currency will have. I want what is best for

:00:48. > :00:49.Scotland. What is best for Scotland is keeping the pound sterling.

:00:50. > :00:51.Alex Salmond's government said Scotland could keep the pound

:00:52. > :00:54.in a formal currency union with the rest of the UK.

:00:55. > :01:04.It is clear to me, I could not as Chancellor recommend that we could

:01:05. > :01:05.share the pound with an independent Scotland.

:01:06. > :01:08.18 months on, the figurehead of the Yes campaign

:01:09. > :01:09.wants his successor, Nicola Sturgeon, to revise

:01:10. > :01:23.I think Nicola is quite right to want to look at the essential case

:01:24. > :01:27.for interdependence and do some refurbishment and re-presentation to

:01:28. > :01:34.make it appropriate for the new age. Should that includes looking again

:01:35. > :01:36.at currency options for an independent Scotland? Yes, the

:01:37. > :01:40.ultimate virtue of got to put forward is one that can withstand

:01:41. > :01:47.any argument put forward by your opponent. This summer, the SNP will

:01:48. > :01:48.embark on a new initiative to build support for independence.

:01:49. > :01:50.The intervention comes after Nicola Sturgeon promised

:01:51. > :01:58.Those who led the No campaign are not impressed.

:01:59. > :02:07.I think Alex Salmond has a bit of a cheat 18 months after the fact

:02:08. > :02:10.acknowledging that his currency case was always flawed. People in

:02:11. > :02:13.Scotland have been well served by the pound, they have been well

:02:14. > :02:16.served as part of the United Kingdom, particularly with all the

:02:17. > :02:18.shocks and instability we have seen over the last years in the world

:02:19. > :02:19.economy. The competing claims over currency

:02:20. > :02:21.were never put to the test, because Scotland voted

:02:22. > :02:23."no" to leaving the UK. But this debate over the pound

:02:24. > :02:27.still matters because the argument over independence has not gone away

:02:28. > :02:31.and many in the Yes movement would put money on there

:02:32. > :02:36.being a referendum re-run sooner Police investigating the murder

:02:37. > :02:44.of 15-year-old Paige Doherty near Glasgow say they're

:02:45. > :02:45.looking for people who were in the area on Monday,

:02:46. > :02:49.the day her body was found. Paige was last seen on Saturday

:02:50. > :02:51.on her way to work. Paige Doherty was last seen

:02:52. > :02:59.here at 8.20am on Saturday morning buying a roll on her way to work

:03:00. > :03:02.The owner of the shop next door knows her family well,

:03:03. > :03:06.he is thought to be one of the last people to speak to Paige

:03:07. > :03:18.before she disappeared. At about quarter past eight on

:03:19. > :03:23.Saturday morning, outside the shop and I said, hello, you worried? She

:03:24. > :03:28.put her hand up and she went into the deli shop and after that I never

:03:29. > :03:32.saw her. When I heard the news that she had been found murdered I was

:03:33. > :03:34.devastated. I can't say much more. I hope they find her killer.

:03:35. > :03:37.Paige would then have walked along here to get her bus to work.

:03:38. > :03:39.Police want to know if anyone was seen acting suspiciously in this

:03:40. > :03:43.She was on her way to her part-time job as a junior

:03:44. > :03:49.Her mother reported her missing after she failed to arrive at work.

:03:50. > :03:53.Paige's body was found here on Monday at about 12.45pm.

:03:54. > :04:01.This is the A82 Great Western Road, the main road into Glasgow .

:04:02. > :04:03.Today, police appealed for what they describe

:04:04. > :04:09.This is a very busy road and the area is also popular

:04:10. > :04:12.Police are asking people to cast their mind to Monday.

:04:13. > :04:15.They are asking people to come forward who saw anyone acting

:04:16. > :04:22.Today, Paige's parents made this appeal for justice.

:04:23. > :04:35.Tonight, police say they are working round the clock

:04:36. > :04:39.Any piece of information, no matter how small,

:04:40. > :04:42.They say they are encouraged with the response so far

:04:43. > :04:45.since they launched the murder inquiry.

:04:46. > :04:47.A deal which could save Lanarkshire's Clydebridge

:04:48. > :04:49.and Dalzell steel plants is said to be close.

:04:50. > :04:51.Negotiations with the likely buyer Liberty House are continuing

:04:52. > :05:04.It looks like the end of an five months ago the owners of

:05:05. > :05:09.Scotland's last big steelworker announced plans to close them. It

:05:10. > :05:14.dealt a hammer blow to the workforce and marked the end of a chapter in

:05:15. > :05:21.Scotland's industrial history. But now, there could be a fresh start.

:05:22. > :05:26.All the signs look set to change, Tata Steel want to sell up to an

:05:27. > :05:32.international metals firm, Liberty house. But how can basic seed where

:05:33. > :05:37.Tata failed? Across Europe and America, the still industry in

:05:38. > :05:42.crisis, the market is swamped with cheaper Chinese steel. Liberty

:05:43. > :05:46.House's tactic is to undercut this opposition by recycling some of the

:05:47. > :05:54.millions of scrap steel exported from the UK every year. We have a

:05:55. > :06:01.different business model, we are looking at basically, reset our

:06:02. > :06:04.costs, we are looking at using slabs which are more competitive.

:06:05. > :06:11.Eventually we are looking at making those clubs ourselves. It has been a

:06:12. > :06:15.hard winter for the workforce as all destroyed up, most have been laid

:06:16. > :06:22.off. But the 270 workers in place last day, just 50 are left. Among

:06:23. > :06:24.them, a union wrap Ross Clark. We have to sit down, we have to get the

:06:25. > :06:31.place operation, we are to secure have to sit down, we have to get the

:06:32. > :06:33.customer base and make this place profitable and sustainable still

:06:34. > :06:36.customer base and make this place interested. Still making was one

:06:37. > :06:39.Scotland's biggest industrial employer and it is dominated

:06:40. > :06:45.Motherwell for decades. People here want these plans saved. It was a big

:06:46. > :06:55.loss to the area, the whole of Lancashire suffered when that

:06:56. > :07:01.colleagues. -- Lanarkshire. A lot of jobs have been lost through it. It

:07:02. > :07:04.needs to be kept. As far as I'm concerned, the town is dead and

:07:05. > :07:12.buried without the steel industry. But now, a tap the limit deal is

:07:13. > :07:16.close. A deal has not yet been done. The key sticking point is the cost

:07:17. > :07:21.of electricity, it takes huge amount of energy to heat up all that steel

:07:22. > :07:30.until it is red-hot. Liberty House want to keep those down now and into

:07:31. > :07:31.the future. Their sumps -- there are some tough talking ahead.

:07:32. > :07:34.At Holyrood, MSPs gathered for the final time before heading

:07:35. > :07:37.Scotland goes to the polls on May 5th.

:07:38. > :07:40.Today was a day for emotion, for farewells and for a bitter

:07:41. > :07:43.political dispute over tax and spending.

:07:44. > :07:51.This from our political editor Brian Taylor.

:07:52. > :07:58.A public book of condolence have now been made available. Holyrood

:07:59. > :08:02.history, Tricia Marwick providing for the last time this term. Nicola

:08:03. > :08:09.Sturgeon facing her final question session before the election. And on

:08:10. > :08:14.the throne, King Robert the Bruce, proudly recoding Scotland passed for

:08:15. > :08:19.passing MSPs. In the chamber though, they are focused on the future. The

:08:20. > :08:26.SNP have said they won't alter tax rates in Scotland for now. This

:08:27. > :08:30.first most who has campaigned for years on the match that more powers

:08:31. > :08:38.means your cuts now refuses to use the powers to stop the cuts. The SNP

:08:39. > :08:41.will revive a planned tax cut for higher earners but Nicola Sturgeon

:08:42. > :08:46.said increasing the very top rate could backfire. If both moved and

:08:47. > :08:53.avoid the tax cuts Scotland's revenue. It says right now it could

:08:54. > :08:57.actually reduce the amount of money we have to invest in our National

:08:58. > :09:01.Health Service is an public services would not be radical, it would be

:09:02. > :09:07.reckless. It would not be daring, it would be daft. The Liberal Democrats

:09:08. > :09:11.said Scottish education would suffer as a consequence. The opportunity to

:09:12. > :09:14.said Scottish education would suffer transform education is missed. It

:09:15. > :09:21.means nursery education targets will be missed. The attainment gap in

:09:22. > :09:24.schools will keep being missed. The First Minister said the fiscal

:09:25. > :09:28.framework would mean Scotland would be recompense for the UK tax plans.

:09:29. > :09:37.That would generate tax for services. Land reform was champion.

:09:38. > :09:42.We have large culture that is of land ownership in Poland and that

:09:43. > :09:48.needs to change. And see Stuart McMillan plays Burns' great anthem.

:09:49. > :09:54.Watching from the gallery, Sheena Wellington that sang that Berry song

:09:55. > :09:59.on Parliament's opening day in 1999. A change of tune and party leaders

:10:00. > :10:07.like the paper out of the chamber, down the corridor towards the garden

:10:08. > :10:12.lobby. There, they gather, those who are departing and those who hope to

:10:13. > :10:24.return, handshakes, hugs, even the occasional stealthy. -- selfie. And

:10:25. > :10:28.from this happy scene, straight onto the street. Ruth Davidson takes the

:10:29. > :10:33.Conservative election message out and about. They don't believe we

:10:34. > :10:37.should put a sign of the border saying higher taxes here. It puts

:10:38. > :10:42.job investment, we don't think people and Scott should have to pay

:10:43. > :10:48.more tax. Labour prepares its election pitch, and front tax and

:10:49. > :10:49.spending. The SNP must said election candidates. He will win? That is

:10:50. > :11:02.your choice. Some use coming into us this

:11:03. > :11:09.evening. The bodies of a man and a woman had been recovered in the Ben

:11:10. > :11:10.Nevis area this evening. Formal I did -- identification is taking

:11:11. > :11:16.place. Well, it's over to Kawser now

:11:17. > :11:31.with the weather outlook for tonight It has been quite a cloudy day so

:11:32. > :11:36.far. As we had through the rest my, we will see some clear spells

:11:37. > :11:41.gelding. Under these clear skies, cabbages falling to allow a touch of

:11:42. > :11:43.frost. The next weather system approaching the west and bringing

:11:44. > :11:49.with it some outbreaks of rain. Some strengthening winds as well, Gill

:11:50. > :11:53.full swing for the Western Isles. Pepita stopping for around 45

:11:54. > :12:02.Celsius. A cloudy, wet start for the day. Tomorrow morning, around eight

:12:03. > :12:06.o'clock, quite a wet morning commute for Dumfries and Gallery, Glasgow as

:12:07. > :12:11.well, further east it will be drier. The rain like an patchy and the wind

:12:12. > :12:15.is still quite strong across the Western Isles, the Northern of the

:12:16. > :12:20.work, tempers around six or seven Celsius. That same weather band will

:12:21. > :12:24.bring heavy rain across Northern Ireland, England and the south-west

:12:25. > :12:29.of the country for England as well. The south-west, 13 degrees were

:12:30. > :12:33.still some drier weather. The same weather band will continue to spread

:12:34. > :12:37.further eastwards as we had through the day, allowing some brighter

:12:38. > :12:40.cells to develop for more northern parts of the countries. There will

:12:41. > :12:46.be some scattered showers, possibly witchery over the hills. As we had

:12:47. > :12:50.through tomorrow night, it will become drier and clearer so for Good

:12:51. > :12:53.Friday, a good dill of some turnaround, especially for southern

:12:54. > :12:58.and eastern parts of Scotland. Further towards the north-west,

:12:59. > :13:02.another band of rain approaching. Good Friday does look to be the

:13:03. > :13:05.better day of the long weekend in terms of dry weather, and afraid

:13:06. > :13:09.this is the picture of the Saturday. A good dill of wet and windy weather

:13:10. > :13:16.in store. Feeling cool under that Hal, temperatures eight or nine

:13:17. > :13:20.Celsius. Bright spells and scattered heavy showers on Easter Day and

:13:21. > :13:21.remaining unsettled for Easter Monday.

:13:22. > :13:25.Our next update is during Breakfast at 6.25am tomorrow morning.

:13:26. > :13:30.But from everyone on the late team, goodnight.
