:06:17. > :06:21.friend's house where she had been staying over. She was on her way to

:09:19. > :09:23.avalanche in the Observatory Gully area on the Saturday morning. The
:09:24. > :09:26.experienced climbers from Bradford were reported missing on Valentine's
:09:27. > :09:29.Day after their tent was found abandoned. But initial attempts to
:09:30. > :09:33.find them had to be called off because weather conditions on the
:09:34. > :09:37.mountain were too dangerous for rescuers. The plight of the couple
:09:38. > :09:40.attracted widespread interest, but as time ran out, their families who
:09:41. > :09:50.arrived in the Highlands this evening had to prepare for the

:11:18. > :11:22.emotional. I have been here 13 years. That is the end of an era.
:11:23. > :11:26.Longannet no more, as they say. Somebody wrote a song about that,
:11:27. > :11:35.didn't they? That's it. Done and dusted. It's the end of a story
:11:36. > :11:37.which began in the 1960s. When Longannet was built, it was the
:11:38. > :11:41.biggest power station in Europe, Longannet was built, it was the
:11:42. > :11:46.providing cheap, reliable supplies of electricity thanks to the
:11:47. > :11:54.country's abundant supplies of coal. But in recent years, the coal has
:11:55. > :11:59.been imported from as far away as Colombia. There has been a massive
:12:00. > :12:05.pile of coal right here for 50 years now. Hard to believe but back in
:12:06. > :12:11.January, there was still a million tonnes of the stuff. Today, it's all
:12:12. > :12:16.gone. Burning coal to produce electricity may be relatively cheap,
:12:17. > :12:21.but it comes at a big cost to the environment. Carbon taxes and grid
:12:22. > :12:26.connection charges which give power stations in England a competitive
:12:27. > :12:31.advantage have taken their toll. Longannet can no longer pay its way.
:12:32. > :12:36.This is the end of coal, the coal area and coal generation in
:12:37. > :12:41.Scotland. For over 100 years, Scotland's power has been dominated
:12:42. > :12:46.by coal and the industry has been built off that. But unfortunately by
:12:47. > :12:52.the end of today, that age finishes here. It's renewable energy which
:12:53. > :12:56.will have to fill the gap. But our reliance on intermittent supplies
:12:57. > :13:02.from wind farms means that although Scotland will remain a net exporter
:13:03. > :13:06.of electricity, there will be an increased number of days when the
:13:07. > :13:11.country relies on power generated in England. We are heading into very,
:13:12. > :13:15.very dangerous waters here. Just suddenly taking out our ability not
:13:16. > :13:19.only to supply power on demand, which is what Longannet does for
:13:20. > :13:25.Scotland, but also to control the quality of the power regionally in
:13:26. > :13:29.the Grid in Scotland, so Scotland is becoming a very interesting, unique
:13:30. > :13:39.first experiment within the UK as a whole, you know, it is not an
:13:40. > :13:43.experiment we should be doing. For the workforce of more than 200, the
:13:44. > :13:47.days leading up to the shutdown have been filled with pride and sadness.
:13:48. > :13:53.Generations of the same families have worked here. Between myself and
:13:54. > :13:59.my dad and my brother, we have got over 74 years service at Longannet
:14:00. > :14:06.power station. A great loss to be leaving Team Longannet. When I
:14:07. > :14:11.started in '68, it was good to start and be and grow with the building.
