:00:07. > :00:11.A pathologist has described a catalogue of injuries on the body

:00:12. > :00:14.of a two year old boy who died at a house in Fife.

:00:15. > :00:16.He told a murder trial Liam Fee probably died when his heart

:00:17. > :00:22.Liam's mother and partner deny killing him.

:00:23. > :00:25.You may find some of the details in Joanne Macaulay's report

:00:26. > :00:40.A postmortem on Liam Fee was carried out two days after his death when he

:00:41. > :00:43.was living at this house. Today the pathologist in charge described

:00:44. > :00:48.multiple external and internal injuries on his body. Doctor French

:00:49. > :00:52.told the court the injuries were not the result of a usual rough and

:00:53. > :00:56.tumble of a toddler but were caused by blunt force trauma. There were

:00:57. > :01:01.numerous bruises and abrasions on his body and there was evidence of a

:01:02. > :01:05.ruptured intestinal which Doctor French said would have caused

:01:06. > :01:10.obvious pain. He also had a fractured upper arm and leg. The

:01:11. > :01:11.prosecutor asked about the broken thigh bone. Would that be painful

:01:12. > :01:35.for Liam? Doctor French said it was most

:01:36. > :01:40.likely that Liam was killed by a blow to the torso which caused the

:01:41. > :01:48.child's hearts to rupture and bleed leading to rapid death. Liam's

:01:49. > :01:54.mother Rachel Fee and her partner Nyomi Fee deny all charges.

:01:55. > :01:58.Practical exams due to be held this week have been postponed at the five

:01:59. > :01:59.Edinburgh High schools affected by the building closures crisis.

:02:00. > :02:02.Six of the 17 affected schools partially reopened this

:02:03. > :02:05.morning but almost 5,000 pupils were off for a third day.

:02:06. > :02:26.A delayed first back and not at the usual school. Hundreds of grey smart

:02:27. > :02:32.people's art at another school. Temporary classrooms are set up

:02:33. > :02:36.where possible. Practical elements of exams at the five affected high

:02:37. > :02:42.schools will not go ahead as planned this week. We have been in

:02:43. > :02:45.constructive dialogue with the Scottish qualifications authority

:02:46. > :02:50.who have knocked back the deadlines for some of the work that needs to

:02:51. > :02:56.be submitted from this week to next week and beyond if required. Other

:02:57. > :03:02.primaries affected were also able to resume classes. We went to the

:03:03. > :03:08.cinema with our friends together and it was lots of fun. How worried are

:03:09. > :03:15.you that you were not at your own school? Just a little bit. Saint

:03:16. > :03:19.Peters is one of the schools shut because of building safety. We have

:03:20. > :03:21.concerns that they will be out of the building for a long time

:03:22. > :03:25.concerns that they will be out of concerns that we don't know how safe

:03:26. > :03:31.the buildings. What else could be wrong? Some people stop being taken

:03:32. > :03:34.to temporary classrooms and others are still waiting to hear on the

:03:35. > :03:36.final arrangements for them so that all schools can have some kind of

:03:37. > :03:44.teaching provision restored by next all schools can have some kind of

:03:45. > :03:47.Tuesday at the latest. Some farmers have been approaching food banks

:03:48. > :03:56.because of the school closures. They have been looking for tinned beans,

:03:57. > :04:01.Tim beans and veg and they are struggling with having to cater for

:04:02. > :04:06.the children over this extended period. Dance classes classes

:04:07. > :04:09.prompting concern that children are missing out. With further disruption

:04:10. > :04:16.ahead, many businesses are counting the cost. We have a large dams team

:04:17. > :04:22.and if they don't work, they don't get paid. If we are not getting

:04:23. > :04:27.paid, we can't afford to pay them. Questions mounts about the

:04:28. > :04:31.compensation claims although most peoples know when they will get

:04:32. > :04:32.behind the desks, there is no indication on when this disruption

:04:33. > :04:35.will end. A trial has begun of five men,

:04:36. > :04:38.now in their 60s and 70s accused of sexually and physically

:04:39. > :04:41.abusing boys who were in their care at the St Ninians School in Falkland

:04:42. > :04:44.in Fife in the 1970s and 80s. In total they face 121 charges

:04:45. > :04:47.of abusing 35 pupils who were aged from

:04:48. > :04:48.11-years-old to 16. Most of the allegations concern

:04:49. > :04:51.seventy three year old John Farrell All the men deny the

:04:52. > :05:00.charges against them. A man has appeared in court charged

:05:01. > :05:03.with murder after the death of a man Shahzad Shah, who was 56,

:05:04. > :05:07.died following an incident at an Indian takeaway

:05:08. > :05:09.in Mintlaw on Monday. Hidayet Ozden, who was 52,

:05:10. > :05:12.of Falkirk, appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court charged

:05:13. > :05:16.with murder and assault. He made no plea or declaration

:05:17. > :05:21.and was remanded in custody. The Scottish Conservatives say

:05:22. > :05:24.they're out to overhaul Labour and replace them as the main

:05:25. > :05:28.opposition to the SNP at Holyrood. Launching their manifesto,

:05:29. > :05:31.the party leader, Ruth Davidson, forecast voters will turn

:05:32. > :05:34.to the Tories because of their pledges to hold down tax

:05:35. > :05:37.and defend the Union. This from our political

:05:38. > :05:51.editor Brian Taylor. This is not a normal election. She

:05:52. > :05:58.expects the SNP to win and is campaigning to come second to lead

:05:59. > :06:03.the opposition. Herbig page is to defend the union positively. The

:06:04. > :06:09.case for independence is dead. The case that the union must now be

:06:10. > :06:14.made. The Conservatives would scrap the named person team monitoring

:06:15. > :06:17.each child. On energy they are pro-nuclear and pro-fracking. They

:06:18. > :06:22.would freeze business rates and leave income tax the same as in the

:06:23. > :06:26.UK. They would raise money and would phase in prescription charges for

:06:27. > :06:31.those who can pay. They would charge graduates up to ?6,000 after they

:06:32. > :06:37.are earning 20000 and they support ending the council tax freeze

:06:38. > :06:41.capping increases of 3%. The Conservatives are planning increased

:06:42. > :06:45.spending on the NHS with a renewed focus on mental health. They are

:06:46. > :06:56.promising more freedom for schools with extra Casper currencies -- cash

:06:57. > :07:01.for colleges. Tactically the aim is to overhaul Labour as the main

:07:02. > :07:07.opposition to the SNP. If we are looking to have a third time at this

:07:08. > :07:10.SNP government, let us change the opposition because something has to

:07:11. > :07:15.change. I can be the strong opposition that people need and can

:07:16. > :07:19.hold the Scottish Government to account, to make sure they are put

:07:20. > :07:23.under pressure. We desperately need them to be to have a better

:07:24. > :07:26.government and better legislation coming out of the Scottish

:07:27. > :07:33.parliament. The strategy is to attract all those who said no at

:07:34. > :07:36.independence, to convince them to be Unionists and conservative.

:07:37. > :07:38.There's been a warning that last ditch efforts to save the Scottish

:07:39. > :07:41.wildcat from extinction are at risk, because of conflict between rival

:07:42. > :07:50.Our environment correspondent, David Miller, reports.

:07:51. > :07:58.The Scottish wildcat. It is rare and at risk. The focus of intense

:07:59. > :08:02.efforts by conservationists working to ensure its survival. One of the

:08:03. > :08:07.biggest threats is crossbreeding with domestic cats. This application

:08:08. > :08:09.for a trapping license released under Freedom of information rules

:08:10. > :08:25.states... Wildcat Haven says Betty is barbaric

:08:26. > :08:29.and unnecessary. The Royal zoological Society of Scotland which

:08:30. > :08:37.may be application has accused the group of using underhand and

:08:38. > :08:45.distorting info to mislead the public. They kill them by shooting.

:08:46. > :08:51.We are advocating using cage trapping so there is far less risk

:08:52. > :08:55.of wild cats being shot. Neutering of feral cats is seen as an

:08:56. > :08:59.important and humane way to prevent crossbreeding but with only a tiny

:09:00. > :09:05.population of wild cats remaining, is it enough? Conservation breeding

:09:06. > :09:09.is important as well as protecting the habitat and making sure there is

:09:10. > :09:15.sufficient habitats for Wildcats and preventing any accidents --

:09:16. > :09:16.accidental persecution. It requires a team effort and a sustained effort

:09:17. > :09:19.over many years. Researchers and engineers scouring

:09:20. > :09:23.Loch Ness for evidence of Nessie have this week made a dramatic

:09:24. > :09:38.discovery - they've It is one of the strangest creatures

:09:39. > :09:46.to emerge from the murky waters of the world-famous lark. No humps and

:09:47. > :09:49.no dinosaur's head. Instead a robot costing $200 million and equipped

:09:50. > :09:57.with the best sonar technology money can buy. Every expedition that comes

:09:58. > :10:03.here says they have the most sophisticated equipment. In this

:10:04. > :10:09.case, it is very, very true. It provided the best images of the

:10:10. > :10:15.walls of the depths of Loch Ness. She has also discovered a monster,

:10:16. > :10:21.albeit a massive model which sank in 1969 during the filming of a

:10:22. > :10:26.Sherlock Holmes movie starring Christopher Lee. They had a large

:10:27. > :10:32.pot with tanks below and towed it into the loch and you got this

:10:33. > :10:39.beautiful Loch Ness Monster out. They lost control of it and they had

:10:40. > :10:45.to cut her free. One kilometre from here, she has been lost ever since.

:10:46. > :10:52.Few experts feel this is a war to read Jurassic Park. But they are

:10:53. > :10:57.keen to investigate why so many people apparently do. Those behind

:10:58. > :11:00.this project is believed that already they have disproved the

:11:01. > :11:09.theory that there is a long trench in the lock. But disproving the

:11:10. > :11:12.existence of Nessie herself, well, that may be altogether a tougher nut

:11:13. > :11:31.to crack. Much of eastern and south-eastern

:11:32. > :11:39.Scotland was wet today. Today it ended with a drying up and that will

:11:40. > :11:45.lead to frost for sheltered areas. As we head into tomorrow morning,

:11:46. > :11:48.sunlight and patchy rain holding on across the south-east. A dry start

:11:49. > :11:53.across the south-west and much of the Central belt. The best of the

:11:54. > :11:58.brightest weather with some sunshine tomorrow morning will be found

:11:59. > :12:03.across the North. A chilly start for some inland parts of the Highlands

:12:04. > :12:07.and the north-east. As we head through the course of the day,

:12:08. > :12:12.across the North, we will continue to see the driest and brightest

:12:13. > :12:15.weather with some spells of sunshine. Cloudy across southern and

:12:16. > :12:23.central areas with one or two showers. Love and Celsius where we

:12:24. > :12:30.see the sunshine. Across the rest of the UK, a drier datacom than we have

:12:31. > :12:35.had of late. For much of Wales, the Midlands and East Anglia, some

:12:36. > :12:40.potent thundery showers once again. Across the southern counties, dry

:12:41. > :12:45.after a wet start and a band of rain moving into the Channel Islands, the

:12:46. > :12:52.Isles of Scilly and across southern Cornwall. Some real temperature

:12:53. > :12:55.contrast. 17 or 18 Celsius across London and 10 degrees cooler where

:12:56. > :12:59.we hold offices -- where we hold onto some cloud in Scotland. Into

:13:00. > :13:04.tomorrow evening and we see this rain pushing into the far south of

:13:05. > :13:07.England and at the same time we will begin to see this cold front pushing

:13:08. > :13:14.into the North of Scotland tomorrow night. Colder air follows that by

:13:15. > :13:21.Friday morning, we may some wintry showers to lower levels. Feeling

:13:22. > :13:25.bitterly cold. That is the forecast. Our next update is during Breakfast

:13:26. > :13:28.at 6:25 tomorrow morning. But, from everyone

:13:29. > :13:31.on the late team - goodnight.
