:00:30. > :00:35.The Scottish TUC described the move as another huge setback

:00:36. > :00:40.Our reporter Andrew Anderson has the story.

:00:41. > :00:43.News that this factory is to close was broken

:00:44. > :00:46.to the workforce earlier today, and I am told it came

:00:47. > :00:50.In recent years, Carron Phoenix has manufactured sinks here,

:00:51. > :00:53.but this factory has a history going back more than 250 years,

:00:54. > :00:57.when it was established as an iron foundry.

:00:58. > :01:02.Cannons that were fired at Trafalgar and Waterloo are just part

:01:03. > :01:06.of the history at the current company in Falkirk.

:01:07. > :01:09.Since 1759, the narration is of workers also turned out iron

:01:10. > :01:13.baths, flat irons and Britain's famous red telephone boxes.

:01:14. > :01:17.At its height, the factory employed 5000 people.

:01:18. > :01:21.It even operated its own fleet of steamships.

:01:22. > :01:23.In recent years, granite sinks have been produced on this

:01:24. > :01:30.The work will be transferred to a factory in Slovakia.

:01:31. > :01:33.The majority of people have spent all their lives here.

:01:34. > :01:41.A lot of people, that is all they know, production in there.

:01:42. > :01:45.The Swiss-based group which owns Carron Phoenix plan to carry

:01:46. > :02:08.out a phased closure in the next 18 to 20 months.

:02:09. > :02:11.In a statement, the company said: the company says its decision has

:02:12. > :02:13.not been taken lightly, but it faces tough competition

:02:14. > :02:17.It is a decision, though, that will bring to an end 250 years

:02:18. > :02:20.of history here in Falkirk and leave more than 200 people looking

:02:21. > :02:29.As we heard, the Scottish TUC described the closure

:02:30. > :02:33.of Carron Phoenix as another blow to manufacturing here and urged

:02:34. > :02:35.the political parties fighting the Holyrood elections

:02:36. > :02:39.The congress also called on all the parties to raise their game,

:02:40. > :02:45.But the party leaders insist their programmes

:02:46. > :02:48.will resonate with all of Scotland - including union members.

:02:55. > :02:58.The trade unions gave birth to the Labour Party

:02:59. > :03:02.with an occasional Communist bloodline, but Scottish

:03:03. > :03:06.industry has changed and so has Scottish politics.

:03:07. > :03:11.The STUC reckons Labour's founder would be unimpressed

:03:12. > :03:14.with the offering from any party in this election.

:03:15. > :03:22.He would be asking for more and calling on politicians

:03:23. > :03:26.to raise their game, to be ambitious for Scotland.

:03:27. > :03:30.First up at the Congress, Labour's Kezia Dugdale,

:03:31. > :03:32.deftly avoiding the SNP stand, a reminder that many union members

:03:33. > :03:38.She promised a new body, skills Scotland, to promote both

:03:39. > :03:42.jobs and training with a key role for the unions.

:03:43. > :03:45.And higher taxation to back that up with spending.

:03:46. > :03:48.We choose to build an economy on higher skills, higher wages

:03:49. > :03:57.There is no future in low wages and low skills.

:03:58. > :04:00.Investing in education and skills is not a social expense,

:04:01. > :04:11.Starting young, Nicola Sturgeon in Glasgow, promoting her party's

:04:12. > :04:13.plans to help families, including a baby box

:04:14. > :04:17.She will address the STUC tomorrow, and says her party is more

:04:18. > :04:20.than ready to engaged with trade unions.

:04:21. > :04:25.I look forward to speaking to the STUC tomorrow and outlining

:04:26. > :04:35.the plans of a re-elected SNP government if we win the election

:04:36. > :04:37.to work with trade unions to oppose Tories' anti-trade union Bill,

:04:38. > :04:43.but also to support the living wage and make sure

:04:44. > :04:46.Ruth Davidson was touring here, symbolic of Scottish

:04:47. > :04:52.She said Labour's thinking was puzzling.

:04:53. > :04:55.The Labour Party is confused at the moment.

:04:56. > :04:57.It says it wants to help businesses by combining agencies

:04:58. > :05:00.that the former First Minister said they should split up

:05:01. > :05:07.They also say they want to make Scotland the highest

:05:08. > :05:09.tax power of the UK, which we know were deterred the sort

:05:10. > :05:11.of jobs and investments that all the businesses

:05:12. > :05:14.For the Liberal Democrats, Willie Rennie spotlighted challenges

:05:15. > :05:20.He said the Labour offer on skills Scotland missed the point.

:05:21. > :05:24.I think organisational change is a distraction.

:05:25. > :05:28.There is a real challenge for the next five years,

:05:29. > :05:35.Back at Congress in Dundee, they persuade and cajole.

:05:36. > :05:39.But it is the voters as a whole across Scotland

:05:40. > :05:47.The organisers of a multi-faith peace campaign launched

:05:48. > :05:51.following the death of Glasgow shopkeeper Asad Shah say

:05:52. > :05:53.they're disappointed Glasgow's Central Mosque

:05:54. > :05:57.The campaign is sponsored by the Ahmadiyya Muslim community

:05:58. > :06:00.He was attacked outside his shop last month.

:06:01. > :06:19.Members of various faith and community groups came together

:06:20. > :06:20.in to lend their support to new advertising

:06:21. > :06:22.campaign being launched by the Ahmadi Muslim community.

:06:23. > :06:25.The message will be seen on 50 buses throughout Glasgow,

:06:26. > :06:29.Those backing this campaign are keen to promote peace, love and unity,

:06:30. > :06:31.but they are only too aware that comes against a backdrop

:06:32. > :06:34.of extremism not just on the world but dangerously close to home.

:06:35. > :06:37.Last month, 40-year-old Asad Shah was killed at his Glasgow shop

:06:38. > :06:41.in an attack described by police as religiously prejudiced.

:06:42. > :06:44.The man charged with his murder, a Bradford taxi driver,

:06:45. > :06:50.Tanveer Ahmed, was condemned after he released a statement

:06:51. > :06:53.claiming he had carried out the killing because he believed

:06:54. > :07:01.The Ahmadi are regarded by orthodox Muslims as heretics, but immediately

:07:02. > :07:03.after Mr Shah's deaths, Ahmadi, Sunni Muslims

:07:04. > :07:06.and Pakistani Christians put their differences aside.

:07:07. > :07:11.At today's event, however, members of Glasgow Central Mosque

:07:12. > :07:15.and attend despite being invited, and Ahmadi leaders say

:07:16. > :07:21.By not coming here today, they are giving signals

:07:22. > :07:28.to the extremists that they are with them, not with us.

:07:29. > :07:32.Glasgow Central Mosque's president told me he couldn't attend due

:07:33. > :07:35.to a prior commitment, but he denied he was sending out

:07:36. > :07:37.the wrong message by not joining the Ahmadis.

:07:38. > :07:39.It is nice that they are joining now.

:07:40. > :07:44.We have always had a big responsibility and we have always

:07:45. > :07:49.glad that we are against extremism and against all the other things

:07:50. > :07:56.we are not allowed as a good Muslim or a good citizen.

:07:57. > :07:58.Is part of the problem that you do not consider

:07:59. > :08:18.Shah's popularity in the community was evident among the floral

:08:19. > :08:21.It is hoped the day's campaign against extremism will offer some

:08:22. > :08:32.Parents in Edinburgh are calling for an independent inquiry

:08:33. > :08:34.into the temporary closure of 17 schools in the city.

:08:35. > :08:37.They want to know why faults were found in the buildings

:08:38. > :08:39.which were only constructed about ten years ago.

:08:40. > :08:41.Most of the children hit by the crisis will resume their

:08:42. > :08:43.education tomorrow in other schools, temporary classrooms

:08:44. > :08:47.Some of the biggest names from the entertainment world have

:08:48. > :08:49.paid their respects at the funeral of Ronnie Corbett.

:08:50. > :08:54.The Edinburgh-born entertainer died last month aged 85 having been

:08:55. > :08:56.diagnosed with a suspected form of motor neurone disease.
