:00:08. > :00:10.The Queen's 90th birthday has been marked

:00:11. > :00:15.21-gun salutes took place at Edinburgh and Stirling Castles,

:00:16. > :00:19.while beacons were lit the length and breadth of the country -

:00:20. > :00:23.from the sunlit Mull of Galloway in the south west,

:00:24. > :00:26.to the top of snow-capped Cairngorm in the Highlands - by members

:00:27. > :00:31.of the 1st Battalion The Highlanders and Orkney cadets.

:00:32. > :00:34.And in the very far north by well-wrapped up locals

:00:35. > :00:48.Our reporter Steven Godden has the details.

:00:49. > :00:54.Birthday greetings from an old friend. Now moored in medley in

:00:55. > :01:05.Leith, the Queen sailed all corners of the globe on royally Tanya. --

:01:06. > :01:11.Royal Yacht Britannia. Today, in her once private quarters,

:01:12. > :01:15.glasses were raised. Etiquette observed, as visitors marked the

:01:16. > :01:20.occasion. Among them this woman, who share something in common. I would

:01:21. > :01:32.imagine your birthday is some very similar experience to harass?

:01:33. > :01:37.Oh, no! A lesser scale, I think! At this primary School near Glasgow,

:01:38. > :01:41.the pupils played along, anticipating the best things about

:01:42. > :01:46.birthdays. A party outside, a drink and some

:01:47. > :01:53.cakes. The cakes for the children didn't

:01:54. > :01:56.last long. Cakes too for the adults at Holyrood

:01:57. > :01:59.Palace. A woman of 90 doing what she is

:02:00. > :02:05.still doing for this country is wonderful.

:02:06. > :02:10.This morning I was listening to children in French, they've come

:02:11. > :02:14.here to see it. Just remember this day, as we're getting the champagne

:02:15. > :02:18.out tonight. That international flavour was to be

:02:19. > :02:27.found at the gates of the Queen's home from home, Balmoral.

:02:28. > :02:31.Plenty of Portuguese enthusiasm. I said this morning, why don't we go

:02:32. > :02:35.to the police used to stay for holidays?

:02:36. > :02:41.We were coming this way and knew we had to stop and to the castle.

:02:42. > :02:45.If we had some 90 odd whiskey- if we could afford 90-year-old whiskey- we

:02:46. > :02:48.would have some of that! The thing about being Queen is

:02:49. > :02:53.there's more than one chance to celebrate. The band. Again to Mike

:02:54. > :02:57.Ross official birthday on June the 13th. -- mark Ross official

:02:58. > :02:58.birthday. The trial of two women,

:02:59. > :03:00.accused of the murder of toddler Liam Fee,

:03:01. > :03:03.has been hearing more disturbing In a video shown to the High Court

:03:04. > :03:07.in Livingston, he said one of the accused had forced his hand

:03:08. > :03:10.into Liam's mouth on the night You may find some of the details

:03:11. > :03:25.in Lisa Summers' report upsetting. To your old Liam Fee was found dead

:03:26. > :03:31.on Saturday March the 22nd 2014. The jury has been watching a series of

:03:32. > :03:37.interviews with the young child Nyomi and Rachel Fee blame for his

:03:38. > :03:40.death. The primary school aged boy describes being in the living room

:03:41. > :03:46.of the house that night, when he heard Nyomi screen, Liam's dead. He

:03:47. > :03:51.said Nyomi screamed at him, do you want to see what you did to Liam? He

:03:52. > :03:56.said he then stood outside the door of Liam's bedroom and saw the boy

:03:57. > :04:02.lying on the floor. He said Nyomi then to commence the and forced his

:04:03. > :04:06.hand into Liam 's mouth. Earlier, the jury saw an interview with the

:04:07. > :04:10.boy tops are being locked in a cage made of a fireguard. He said he was

:04:11. > :04:18.sometimes left naked or might, with his hands tied behind his back. He

:04:19. > :04:21.asked why he had previously claimed to run Goodwillie, he said he made

:04:22. > :04:30.that bit up, but in no way he said it. Rachel and Nyomi are charged

:04:31. > :04:32.with causing Liam's death. The trial continues.

:04:33. > :04:34.Ships sailing through the Pentland Firth could in future

:04:35. > :04:36.be required to report to the Coast Guard.

:04:37. > :04:39.It follows the sinking of a cargo ship, in which eight crewmen died

:04:40. > :04:41.in atrocious conditions in January last year.

:04:42. > :04:44.An official report into what happened says a mandatory

:04:45. > :04:47.reporting system might have saved lives.

:04:48. > :05:03.The 3rd of January, 2015, and passengers and crew on a Northern

:05:04. > :05:08.Isles ferry spot the bow of a ship, perpendicular above the waves. It's

:05:09. > :05:15.not a search for the ship, a cement carrier sailing from Denmark to

:05:16. > :05:19.Cheshire. It's capsize was so catastrophic, the crew didn't even

:05:20. > :05:23.have time to issue a distress call. The capsize event was extremely

:05:24. > :05:29.rapid, denying the crew the opportunity to raise alarm

:05:30. > :05:32.themselves. We also know the urgency position indicating radio beacon

:05:33. > :05:36.probably got trapped in the upturned hull. Again, because it was such a

:05:37. > :05:40.rapid event. Investigators found the ship

:05:41. > :05:45.capsized in violent seating distance. But the advice to sail

:05:46. > :05:48.into the Pentland Firth was probably influenced by commercial pressures.

:05:49. > :05:51.The accident went unnoticed by the Coast Guard because the vessel's

:05:52. > :05:58.progress was not being monitored actively. Loss, safety inspections

:05:59. > :06:04.carried out in Poland were ineffective.

:06:05. > :06:07.I'm calling for a public enquiry because this has happened several

:06:08. > :06:13.times and stop vessels going down with the loss of life. Sometimes

:06:14. > :06:20.people have not live the we're died, but the point is that they're not

:06:21. > :06:23.rate regulated, it is a blatant safety crisis.

:06:24. > :06:26.The operators of the ship say they have ever minted several safety

:06:27. > :06:29.initiative since the accident. In future, ships entering and leaving

:06:30. > :06:33.the Pentland Firth may have to report into the Coast Guard.

:06:34. > :06:35.With the Holyrood election just two weeks away,

:06:36. > :06:38.the political parties have been setting out their competing plans

:06:39. > :06:46.Here's our political correspondent, Glenn Campbell.

:06:47. > :06:49.Do I need to put it in the microwave?

:06:50. > :06:53.The Conservative's education offering is not to be funded

:06:54. > :06:56.Instead, the Tory leader - visiting an Edinburgh nursery -

:06:57. > :06:59.is content to let local authorities fund improvements

:07:00. > :07:12.We have to allow councils to raise more revenue. We said that should be

:07:13. > :07:16.capped at 3%. That will bring in millions of pounds more over the

:07:17. > :07:18.course of the next Parliament. Education is a keeper different

:07:19. > :07:20.councils, that will see more money in the budget.

:07:21. > :07:23.By now, the Liberal Democrat leader hopes even the dogs in the streets

:07:24. > :07:27.of Duns know his party wants to increase education spending,

:07:28. > :07:29.in the hope of helping young people from poorer

:07:30. > :07:43.We can have a vibrant economy that grows the wealth and opportunity in

:07:44. > :07:46.Scotland. We do that by investing in education. ?500 million and a modest

:07:47. > :07:48.anyone income tax to pay for it. In the Western Isles -

:07:49. > :07:51.also trading on income tax rises, including a new 50p top rate -

:07:52. > :07:54.the Labour leader's challenging the SNP to match her commitment

:07:55. > :08:08.to up the education budget. The Labour Party is committed to

:08:09. > :08:11.increasing the education budget in real terms. We can say that because

:08:12. > :08:15.we are using the tax and welfare powers of the Scottish parliament.

:08:16. > :08:19.That involves asking the richest 1% in Parliament the we're Scotland to

:08:20. > :08:20.pay more tax. That doesn't appear to have

:08:21. > :08:22.Nicola Sturgeon in a sweat. The SNP say they are planning

:08:23. > :08:24.above-inflation increases And in Dumfries, the party leader

:08:25. > :08:28.promises to let each school decide how to use extra cash to bring out

:08:29. > :08:40.the best from every child. What ever it is the head teacher

:08:41. > :08:43.thinks is going to make the biggest difference in the school, that is

:08:44. > :08:48.what that money will be spent on. All the evidence says that when you

:08:49. > :08:49.put head teachers in communities in control of the life of the school,

:08:50. > :08:51.you get the best results. All parties are putting a great deal

:08:52. > :08:54.of emphasis on improving education. Together with health and law

:08:55. > :08:57.and order, it's one of the biggest responsibilities for whichever party

:08:58. > :09:01.or parties form the next Scottish Government here

:09:02. > :09:05.in Edinburgh, when all the votes Glenn Campbell, Reporting

:09:06. > :09:13.Scotland, Edinburgh. Edinburgh Council has been outlining

:09:14. > :09:16.the arrangements being made for those pupils affected

:09:17. > :09:18.by the recent school closures, The council says all pupils

:09:19. > :09:22.will sit their exams in the schools they're presently attending,

:09:23. > :09:24.with every effort being made Celtic's departing manager says

:09:25. > :09:29.the lack of improvement Ronny Deila outlined

:09:30. > :09:32.that as the main reason He also says some players will be

:09:33. > :09:48.happy to see the back of him, If events of the last day or two had

:09:49. > :09:53.taken their toll on Ronny Deila, the Norwegian hid it well this morning.

:09:54. > :09:59.The players too arrived in good fettle, if a little subdued. While

:10:00. > :10:01.the manager managed to keep preparations as normal as possible,

:10:02. > :10:06.he revealed what led to his imminent departure.

:10:07. > :10:10.When I came into this job I talked about improving the team. I talked

:10:11. > :10:14.about playing attractive football. And a think, the last six months, we

:10:15. > :10:17.haven't had that improvement that we need. And when you don't get

:10:18. > :10:24.improvements, it's one of my biggest values, then it kills me inside.

:10:25. > :10:28.Such an admission is typical of Deila's openness. He admitted some

:10:29. > :10:31.of the squad will be happy to see him go. He believes he has the

:10:32. > :10:38.respect, but has a commitment to him faltered?

:10:39. > :10:43.The boys always give 100%. We hold our hands up and admit if we haven't

:10:44. > :10:49.been committed. But you can say we have not been committed.

:10:50. > :10:52.There have been murmurings of Deila's role in assembling the

:10:53. > :10:58.squad. Something which does rile this normally placid Norwegian.

:10:59. > :11:07.I signed the players. There is not one player coming in that thought

:11:08. > :11:10.that I have not said yes to. Within a few weeks, Ronny Deila will

:11:11. > :11:12.be on the move. Until then, the focus is firmly on going out on a

:11:13. > :11:13.high. Let's get the weather outlook

:11:14. > :11:24.for tonight Thank you. It was a lovely day for

:11:25. > :11:28.many of us today. In fact, the warmest day of the year so far for

:11:29. > :11:35.England, Wales and us here in Scotland. Reaching 90 degrees and

:11:36. > :11:41.Kirkcudbrightshire. Around the north and east of the country, it was

:11:42. > :11:46.chilly thanks to the winds. Tonight some areas could reach minus three.

:11:47. > :11:50.A chilly start tomorrow morning, but a bright start. Very similar to

:11:51. > :11:57.conditions we saw this morning. Seven Celsius in some areas, but

:11:58. > :12:01.those temperatures would rise as readily as today. Further north, a

:12:02. > :12:06.few showers in Caithness and Sutherland. As well as the Northern

:12:07. > :12:10.Isles. They could be heavy and with some sweet. As we had with the

:12:11. > :12:19.course of Friday, plenty of sunshine on offer, particularly those in that

:12:20. > :12:24.Saul temperatures in the mid teens. Across the UK as a whole, plenty of

:12:25. > :12:27.sunshine for others in Scotland, also the north of England, Northern

:12:28. > :12:32.Ireland too. But in England and Wales it will be cloudy, producing

:12:33. > :12:34.wet weather towards the South West and Wales. Temp just down from any

:12:35. > :12:41.competitor day. In the North and and Wales. Temp just down from any

:12:42. > :12:45.East, perhaps just 9 degrees. Those showers pushing towards Edinburgh

:12:46. > :12:50.the Borders. Looking towards the weekend, how precious to whether us,

:12:51. > :12:54.and the winds blowing in a clockwise motion, that means we will continue

:12:55. > :13:00.to drag in those cool winds from the north. Not desperately cold, bit

:13:01. > :13:04.colder than we have seen of late. Share was most frequent across the

:13:05. > :13:10.North East on Saturday, all the way down the North Sea coast. Again with

:13:11. > :13:14.sleet in the mix at times. The further west you are, the brighter

:13:15. > :13:20.and sunnier it will be. Similar too on Monday we're Sunday, it will be

:13:21. > :13:22.cool in the north and North East. That's the forecast.

:13:23. > :13:26.Our next update is during Breakfast at 6:25 tomorrow morning.

:13:27. > :13:30.But from everyone on the late team here in Glasgow and around
