:00:00. > :00:00.and on BBC One we now join the BBC's news teams where you are.

:00:00. > :00:16.MSPs start returning to Holyrood after the election.

:00:17. > :00:20.I am the newly elected MSP for Edinburgh West.

:00:21. > :00:22.With a mixture of apprehension and excitement the new intake

:00:23. > :00:24.try to find their feet in their new surroundings.

:00:25. > :00:27.Meanwhile, with barely a chance for Scotland to catch its breath,

:00:28. > :00:29.politicians are already on the campaign trail

:00:30. > :00:34.Also on the programme, 75 years on - the mystery of why

:00:35. > :00:42.Celtic's assistant manager John Collins reveals he's leaving

:00:43. > :00:59.And what a scorcher, it has been the warmest day of the year so far in

:01:00. > :01:00.Scotland, but can it last? I will have the full forecast at the end of

:01:01. > :01:07.the programme. The new MSPs elected in last week's

:01:08. > :01:13.Scottish Parliament election They're being helped to find

:01:14. > :01:17.their feet with a new orientation course, showing them how

:01:18. > :01:19.the institution works. But amid the smiles

:01:20. > :01:21.and congratulations, the post mortem of the election

:01:22. > :01:24.for the Labour party continues. Our political editor Brian Taylor

:01:25. > :01:38.is at Holyrood for us this evening. Jackie, thanks very much indeed. We

:01:39. > :01:44.will have some of those political machinations in a moment, but first,

:01:45. > :01:48.a chance to meet some of the new kids on the Holyrood block.

:01:49. > :01:53.Getting started, a formal photo shoot for Ruth Maguire. She can

:01:54. > :01:59.always rely on her dad John Finnie for advice. He is an MSP as well

:02:00. > :02:03.will stop one snag, he now represents the Green Party. We will

:02:04. > :02:08.will stop one snag, he now never fall out! I have asked him not

:02:09. > :02:13.to embarrass me or do anything embarrassing dad stuff. I was

:02:14. > :02:21.horrified to find out he is only a few doors down the corridor from me.

:02:22. > :02:27.Here is Tory MSP Oliver Mandell. He has a famous father as well, the

:02:28. > :02:33.Scottish Secretary David Mundell. Any advice? He said to enjoy it and

:02:34. > :02:40.take a bit of time to take stock before throwing myself too much into

:02:41. > :02:45.things on day one. Is smiling welcome for another conservative,

:02:46. > :02:51.Brian one shoe were told. One shoe? The slow motion showed Brian Whittle

:02:52. > :02:57.losing his running shoe... That was winning relay gold for Great Britain

:02:58. > :03:02.in the 1986 championships. Today he can see both sides. I hope there is

:03:03. > :03:06.some consensus where we can work together for the betterment of our

:03:07. > :03:14.country. It is certainly going to be feisty. It is all bit much for some

:03:15. > :03:21.of the newcomers. I am the newly elected MSP for Edinburgh Western.

:03:22. > :03:27.One of five Liberal Democrats, Alistair Cole Hamilton is raring to

:03:28. > :03:36.go. -- Alex Cole-Hamilton. I am raring to go. Some say it is like

:03:37. > :03:40.the first day at school. There are a lot of new things to find out about,

:03:41. > :03:49.find my way around the building, learn how to get the information I

:03:50. > :03:53.need. The retiring presiding officer congratulates her constituency

:03:54. > :04:00.successor. Ms Marwick urges MSP is to live up to the fresh challenge.

:04:01. > :04:06.The 1-page -- the one thing about the people of Scotland, the it is up

:04:07. > :04:10.to them to make sure they fulfil the wishes and hopes of the people of

:04:11. > :04:18.Scotland. It is for the parliamentarians to deal with it.

:04:19. > :04:25.This was always meant to deliver a coalition Administration. There will

:04:26. > :04:27.be in you be residing officer next week and they will confirm Nicola

:04:28. > :04:38.Sturgeon into office. They have had something to say about

:04:39. > :04:42.why Labour did so badly in the election? It was an appalling night

:04:43. > :04:49.for Labour. The deputy leader of the Labour Party said the Labour Party

:04:50. > :04:52.allowed itself to be squeezed out of basically a rerun of the referendum

:04:53. > :04:57.discourse between the pro-independence SNP and the very

:04:58. > :05:03.prounion conservatives. He said his new party -- his party needs to find

:05:04. > :05:09.a new approach to this. This is what he had to say when he spoke to me.

:05:10. > :05:13.The Labour Party cannot stand on the sidelines. We have to set out very

:05:14. > :05:19.clearly our view on the constitution and that is what I am arguing. You

:05:20. > :05:25.believe there should be a federal position?

:05:26. > :05:29.Absolutely. I really don't see any signs of an attempt to unseat the

:05:30. > :05:33.leadership of Kezia Dugdale or Alex Rowling is deputy, but they will

:05:34. > :05:38.have to look seriously at how their comeback from this position. The

:05:39. > :05:43.presiding officer will be elected on Thursday. Various names in the

:05:44. > :05:47.frame. The SNP I don't think we'll be interested, they will want to

:05:48. > :05:53.keep the 63 seats they have. The First Minister is elected next week

:05:54. > :05:54.will stop there is some talk that could be accelerated to Tuesday.

:05:55. > :05:57.Thank you, Brian. With the Holyrood election behind

:05:58. > :05:59.us, the politicians are already out on the campaign trail for the next

:06:00. > :06:02.big national vote. The referendum on the United

:06:03. > :06:04.Kingdom's place in or out of the European Union is just over

:06:05. > :06:08.six weeks away, on June 23rd. The battle's been raging

:06:09. > :06:10.within the UK government, and today, Whitehall and Westminster

:06:11. > :06:13.stepped it up in Scotland. Our business and economy editor,

:06:14. > :06:27.Douglas Fraser, reports. One campaign done, three days later,

:06:28. > :06:32.the politicians are back fortifying themselves for yet more. Those

:06:33. > :06:38.sightings of Whitehall ministers have been read recently. Liz Truss

:06:39. > :06:44.visited this whiskey distillery in East Lothian, meeting bosses and

:06:45. > :06:51.emphasising the role of the European union. What the Out campaign have

:06:52. > :06:56.said as they want separate regulations here in the UK than

:06:57. > :07:00.Europe. Whiskey companies would have to follow UK regulations, then they

:07:01. > :07:05.would have to follow EU regulations which we would have no say over. It

:07:06. > :07:09.would mean extra hassle, more red tape, not less red tape, and it

:07:10. > :07:15.means there would be less whiskey exported and fewer jobs here in

:07:16. > :07:19.Scotland. The way the campaign has been going on Westminster and across

:07:20. > :07:24.England has not impressed the SNP's foreign affairs spokesman. The

:07:25. > :07:33.former First Minister took his case for remaining in the U -- EU to

:07:34. > :07:40.Brussels today. The Remain campaign has been very dispiriting. It is

:07:41. > :07:46.almost projects earmarked to from the referendum. You cannot galvanise

:07:47. > :07:55.or motivate people on negatives. 21 months on from that referendum,

:07:56. > :08:01.there will not need to be much catching up. One Tory MP was keen to

:08:02. > :08:05.emphasise the benefits of small independent nations. Have you looked

:08:06. > :08:12.at what is happening in Iceland, for example? The Icelandic 's, a small

:08:13. > :08:17.country, they are selling their fish for the Olympics in Brazil. They are

:08:18. > :08:24.global trade because they are masters of their own destiny. As for

:08:25. > :08:28.the whiskey industry, its appeal crosses boundaries and political

:08:29. > :08:33.divisions. The recent Scottish whiskey does so well and sells on

:08:34. > :08:37.the continent, is because it is a very good product. In France, they

:08:38. > :08:41.sell more bottles than they do of Napoleonic brandy. If we come out of

:08:42. > :08:48.the EU, they will still want to buy whiskey. There are six weeks until

:08:49. > :08:54.this result is uncorked. Scotland's focus turns to a new campaign this

:08:55. > :08:59.week, with questions to be distilled around the identity. We can expect

:09:00. > :09:01.more politicians to head north of the border but we cannot expect them

:09:02. > :09:03.to agree with each other. You're watching

:09:04. > :09:05.Reporting Scotland. Still to come on

:09:06. > :09:06.tonight's programme... To all those seeking

:09:07. > :09:08.sanctuary in the garden, we cast an eye over what goes

:09:09. > :09:11.to make the ideal hut. In sport, just who does Celtic's top

:09:12. > :09:14.goal scorer Leigh Griffiths say will be the biggest challenger

:09:15. > :09:18.to Celtic for the title next season? And the end of a beautiful

:09:19. > :09:20.partnership, Murray and Mauresmo announce they are to go

:09:21. > :09:23.their separate ways. Full details in the sport coming

:09:24. > :09:30.soon. A friend of two women accused

:09:31. > :09:33.of murdering Liam Fee has told a court they "knew

:09:34. > :09:37.they were going to jail." Sean Catherall said Rachel

:09:38. > :09:40.and Nyomi Fee told him they didn't murder Liam but they would be

:09:41. > :09:43.going to jail for neglect. The couple deny murdering

:09:44. > :09:45.two-year-old Liam and They also deny harming

:09:46. > :10:00.two other boys. Sean Catherall said Rachel and Nyomi

:10:01. > :10:05.Fee had stayed with him for a few nights after Liam died. They said

:10:06. > :10:11.another boy strangled the toddler but he said the women said they were

:10:12. > :10:16.always going to jail for neglect. Mr Katherine told the jury that the

:10:17. > :10:23.women had been googling injuries that Lee had. He said they all went

:10:24. > :10:26.to a pub to chat about what had happened. He said both women were

:10:27. > :10:32.distraught and some crazy things had been said. He said there was not

:10:33. > :10:36.much chat about Liam, but they used horrible words to describe the other

:10:37. > :10:43.young boy, pretty much saying he was an animal. He said that the women

:10:44. > :10:47.would go to jail for neglect. He said Rachel asked would they get a

:10:48. > :10:56.cell together? He said they knew they were in trouble but they did

:10:57. > :11:01.not seem that bothered. The paediatrician told the court that

:11:02. > :11:05.she had significant concerns about Liam was Matt levels of stimulation

:11:06. > :11:12.and frustration. The doctor examined the boy because of concerns about

:11:13. > :11:17.possible child abuse. Rachel and Nyomi Fee deny murdering the boy.

:11:18. > :11:19.The trial continues at the High Court in Livingston.

:11:20. > :11:21.A look at other stories from across the country...

:11:22. > :11:24.A man who murdered his flatmate, after claiming she refused

:11:25. > :11:26.to have sex with him, has been jailed for life.

:11:27. > :11:29.Gary Stevenson stabbed 25-year-old Katy Rourke at the flat they shared

:11:30. > :11:31.in Glasgow four days after Christmas last year.

:11:32. > :11:33.The 27-year-old later gave himself up to police and admitted

:11:34. > :11:34.murdering Ms Rourke, who was originally

:11:35. > :11:40.MP Natalie McGarry has apologised and made a charitable donation

:11:41. > :11:46.after wrongly describing a pro-Union campaigner as a "holocaust denier".

:11:47. > :11:49.The Glasgow MP said she made a "serious mistake" when she posted

:11:50. > :11:52.comments on Twitter, which resulted in Scotland in Union

:11:53. > :11:56.director Alastair Cameron taking legal action.

:11:57. > :11:59.A man has been arrested in connection with a death 38

:12:00. > :12:04.The body of Kazi Ahmad was found in his flat

:12:05. > :12:10.He managed the Raj Dulal restaurant in Dee Street.

:12:11. > :12:12.Police Scotland confirmed a 62-year-old man had been arrested

:12:13. > :12:20.More than 400 pupils won't be able to go to school in Stirlingshire

:12:21. > :12:24.this week after concerns were raised about the safety of their building.

:12:25. > :12:27.Balfron High has been partly closed for repairs,

:12:28. > :12:32.although older pupils sitting exams can still use unaffected areas.

:12:33. > :12:37.New figures have revealed that Highland Council's debt burden

:12:38. > :12:39.is likely to hit ?1billion next year.

:12:40. > :12:41.Concerns are being voiced about the cost of servicing

:12:42. > :12:47.the debt but council leaders insist their level of borrowing

:12:48. > :12:52.The family of a man who died in police custody in Fife

:12:53. > :12:54.have held further talks with the Lord Advocate in Edinburgh.

:12:55. > :12:57.They say the promise of a fatal accident inquiry into the death

:12:58. > :13:12.The family have requested that the Health and Safety Executive become

:13:13. > :13:24.involved, and consider a potential prosecution of Police Scotland over

:13:25. > :13:26.the strained techniques. Sheku Bayoh had a right to life and Police

:13:27. > :13:30.Scotland had a duty of care for him. 75 years ago tomorrow,

:13:31. > :13:32.one of the strangest episodes of the Second World War took

:13:33. > :13:35.place in Scotland. Late in the evening,

:13:36. > :13:37.a German plane crashed The pilot turned out to be

:13:38. > :13:40.Hitler's deputy Rudolph Hess He flew from Bavaria straight to

:13:41. > :13:54.the details of which have He flew from Bavaria straight to

:13:55. > :14:03.Scotland, landing by parachute near Glasgow. The wrecked missions

:14:04. > :14:10.smit... With the plane out of fuel, Rudolf Hess bailed out just before

:14:11. > :14:18.it crashed at Floors Farm near Eaglesham. The farmer detained him

:14:19. > :14:24.before the Home Guard took him to Glasgow. There, Hess asked for and

:14:25. > :14:29.was granted a meeting with the Duke of Hamilton, a senior RAF officer

:14:30. > :14:34.and who Hess believed wrongly had been in government. He gave a false

:14:35. > :14:39.name to everybody else but revealed his true identity to my father and

:14:40. > :14:45.when my father reported to Churchill, Churchill refused to

:14:46. > :14:51.believe it. 40 years ago James Douglas Hamilton's book was regarded

:14:52. > :14:54.as the definitive account of the incident. He believed Hess came

:14:55. > :14:59.about Hitler's knowledge to try and get Britain out of the war, not for

:15:00. > :15:04.the sake of peace, but because Germany planned to attack Russia and

:15:05. > :15:09.Hess did not believe they could win an two fronts. A version of events

:15:10. > :15:16.Hess did not deny. It was put to him, points made in my book about

:15:17. > :15:20.him, and he did not deny what I had said, which is he wanted to get

:15:21. > :15:27.Britain out of the war before Germany attacked Russia. And he also

:15:28. > :15:31.accepted that he had never met my father before the Second World War.

:15:32. > :15:37.The book is republished for the 75th anniversary, with additional

:15:38. > :15:42.information released under a Freedom of Information requirement, but

:15:43. > :15:46.other documents remain secret. Hess was convicted of war crimes at

:15:47. > :15:51.Nuremberg and spent the rest of his life in prison. The Duke of Hamilton

:15:52. > :15:58.described his meeting with a Nazi as a four-day wonder, but the mystery

:15:59. > :16:00.surrounding it has endured for 75 years.

:16:01. > :16:02.Mortgage arrears in the Aberdeen area have more than tripled

:16:03. > :16:05.following the collapse in the oil price, according to the

:16:06. > :16:09.That's double the figure for the rest of the UK.

:16:10. > :16:12.Their report says arrears could rise even further, as volatility

:16:13. > :16:13.in the oil industry increases unemployment

:16:14. > :16:21.Let's get tonight's sport from Rhona.

:16:22. > :16:24.The departing Celtic assistant manager John Collins says,

:16:25. > :16:26.with Champions League qualifiers on the horizon, it is "absolutely

:16:27. > :16:29.vital" the club appoint a new managerial team sooner

:16:30. > :16:34.Collins confirmed today he will be leaving the club along

:16:35. > :16:38.The news comes just a day after Celtic officially clinched

:16:39. > :16:56.Sometimes, being champions is still not enough. The first time we spoke

:16:57. > :17:00.to you since Ronny Deila made his announcement he would be leaving.

:17:01. > :17:04.What's the situation for you? The situation is, I would be going as

:17:05. > :17:11.well. I came in with Ronnie, so it's right and I leave as well. It's

:17:12. > :17:14.disappointing but a lot of people will have been delighted with what

:17:15. > :17:21.I've managed, I have played for the club, and been on the coaching team.

:17:22. > :17:27.Two league titles and a cup. History will dictate if it was good or bad.

:17:28. > :17:31.Five league titles in a row, but also high profile failures. Not only

:17:32. > :17:39.have Celtic faulted in Europe, Daly and Collins have also scene defeat

:17:40. > :17:43.in domestic cup competitions. In the big games, everybody has said it, we

:17:44. > :17:47.have not played as well as we could in the big games. Ultimately, that

:17:48. > :17:53.has proved disappointing. in the big games. Ultimately, that

:17:54. > :17:57.titles, but a few ups and downs over the last couple of seasons at

:17:58. > :18:00.Celtic. As Don Collins departs the club he now says it's hugely

:18:01. > :18:05.important the club act swiftly to appoint a new manager. -- as John

:18:06. > :18:09.Collins. Absolutely vital, they can't get a new manager in quick

:18:10. > :18:14.enough. He has to assess the squad and prepare for the Champions League

:18:15. > :18:18.games coming straightaway. Time is of the essence. The first Champions

:18:19. > :18:20.League qualifier will be played on the 12th or 13th of July.

:18:21. > :18:23.The SFA Performance Director Brian McClair believes the game of Futsal

:18:24. > :18:25.will develop better skills and players in Scotland.

:18:26. > :18:28.Others in the game believe we could be seeing results in 10

:18:29. > :18:33.Well, it's a five-a-side version of football,

:18:34. > :18:35.with a few other differences, and there's a Scotland national team.

:18:36. > :18:53.Its five a side, but not as we know it. This version, played with a

:18:54. > :18:57.small, heavy ball, helped the talent of Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar and more.

:18:58. > :19:04.The recent creation of a Scottish national team. It will help players

:19:05. > :19:11.develop their individual skills, tactical knowledge as well. You get

:19:12. > :19:13.a lot more touches. You have the opportunity to practice one against

:19:14. > :19:21.one situations in attack and defence. Overall, it's got a lot of

:19:22. > :19:24.things going for it. There is a two pronged approach here, growing the

:19:25. > :19:28.game of futsal itself is one aspect. Those involved see a bigger picture.

:19:29. > :19:33.Anyone who has watched these games will see where the synergy is

:19:34. > :19:39.between the game as a sport in its own right, and the development of

:19:40. > :19:43.quick thinking, creative, technically proficient football

:19:44. > :19:48.players. That's a key aim for Brian McClair, who is nonetheless under no

:19:49. > :19:51.illusions as to the time frame for success. Scotland fans desperate for

:19:52. > :19:55.return to major competition are success. Scotland fans desperate for

:19:56. > :19:59.advised to be patient, but according to this former Hibs player and Kaman

:20:00. > :20:08.accused coach it will be worth the wait. -- Kilmarnock youth coach.

:20:09. > :20:11.Giving the youth teams plenty of futsal, it will develop better

:20:12. > :20:15.players, but we will not get instant results. It's a long-term effect.

:20:16. > :20:20.You have to be prepared to start young and we will have results in

:20:21. > :20:29.ten or 15 years, potentially. Progress is being made, however

:20:30. > :20:31.slowly. But if it leads to a generation of Xavis and Iniestas

:20:32. > :20:33.then the good times can begin. Andy Murray says he has learned

:20:34. > :20:36.a great deal from Amelie Mauresmo The Scot, who's dropped to world

:20:37. > :20:40.number 3, has announced that he and his French coach have

:20:41. > :20:42.split after two years. She says that dedicating enough time

:20:43. > :20:47.for the travel has been a challenge. Murray says he'll take some time

:20:48. > :20:50.to decide on his new coaching setup. Scotland head coach Vern Cotter has

:20:51. > :20:53.named, what he is calling a "tight" 27-man squad for this summer's

:20:54. > :20:55.tour of Japan. The Glasgow centre Mark Bennett

:20:56. > :20:58.is missing, but bidding for a place in Team GB's Olympic sevens

:20:59. > :21:00.squad for Rio. Other noteable absentees are Blair

:21:01. > :21:03.Cowan, Matt Scott and Duncan Weir. Cotter explains why the squad,

:21:04. > :21:22.is largely a follow-on We don't have a lot of depth,

:21:23. > :21:26.really. And this group needs to play more rugby together, have more Test

:21:27. > :21:32.match experience together, to become better. We had a reasonable six

:21:33. > :21:35.Nations. We will give these guys the opportunity again to develop things

:21:36. > :21:39.we are not particularly happy with, and improve areas we need

:21:40. > :21:43.Let's hope the strategy works. There is all your sport.

:21:44. > :21:46.On a day like this, what could be better than spending quality time

:21:47. > :21:49.And we have some sheds with a difference for you.

:21:50. > :21:51.They've undergone an architectural transformation to become Ideal Huts.
