:00:12. > :00:14.The Duke of Edinburgh is to miss tomorrow's commemorations marking

:00:15. > :00:16.the Battle of Jutland in Orkney following medical advice.

:00:17. > :00:18.Buckingham Palace say the 94-year-old will be represented

:00:19. > :00:27.The Duke's expected to resume engagements later this week.

:00:28. > :00:29.Meanwhile, final preparations are being made for the 100th

:00:30. > :00:31.anniversary of the battle, which claimed the lives

:00:32. > :00:45.This is a symbol of the two nations coming together to commemorate the

:00:46. > :00:50.Battle of Jutland tomorrow. In the distance, a frigate from the German

:00:51. > :00:55.navy. Closer to shore, the Royal Navy's HMS Kent. 100 years ago, on

:00:56. > :00:58.the eve of one of the biggest engagement in naval history, a

:00:59. > :01:02.battle cruiser squadrons slipped out of the Firth of Forth. It joined the

:01:03. > :01:06.Royal Navy's ran fleet which had sailed from Orkney to intercept the

:01:07. > :01:11.German high Seas Fleet. In the battle that followed, thousands of

:01:12. > :01:14.lives were lost. It is an overcast day, so exactly what it would have

:01:15. > :01:18.been like 100 years ago on the eve of the Battle of Jutland, when the

:01:19. > :01:25.two grand Fleet from Britain and Germany met each other. In those

:01:26. > :01:34.short 12 hours, huge attrition on both sides, some 8500 lives lost.

:01:35. > :01:39.The Battle of Jutland remains controversial. The vastly superior

:01:40. > :01:44.British fleet lost more men and more ships, but the German fleet remained

:01:45. > :01:49.pending for the remainder of the war. The British public and the

:01:50. > :02:02.Royal Navy were expecting a victory, a victory like Nelson. The result

:02:03. > :02:07.was a deep disappointment. Tomorrow, two vessels will fire 21 gun salutes

:02:08. > :02:11.as a commemoration, with services of commemoration being held.

:02:12. > :02:14.The jury in the trial of two women accused of murdering two-year

:02:15. > :02:17.old Liam Fee has been sent home without returning a verdict

:02:18. > :02:25.Rachel Fee and her civil partner Nyomi Fee deny murdering the toddler

:02:26. > :02:28.The couple say another young boy, who can't be identified for legal

:02:29. > :02:32.reasons, was responsible for Liam's injuries.

:02:33. > :02:34.The jury at the High Court in Livingston retired

:02:35. > :02:37.to consider their verdict on Friday and are expected to resume

:02:38. > :02:42.Police Scotland has been putting on show some of the air weapons

:02:43. > :02:44.handed in during the first week of an amnesty.

:02:45. > :02:47.So far, more than 2000 have been surrendered to police as part

:02:48. > :02:49.of the campaign which runs until the 12th of June.

:02:50. > :02:52.It allows owners to hand in their airguns ahead of new laws

:02:53. > :02:56.which will make it illegal to possess one without a licence

:02:57. > :03:26.We don't have an exact figure on how many might be out there. Air weapons

:03:27. > :03:28.haven't been licensed before and they are freely available to

:03:29. > :03:31.purchase in lots of different ways. What I do know, though, is that 2300

:03:32. > :03:34.in the first week is a fantastic total. I would like to thank the

:03:35. > :03:35.members of the public who handed in unwanted weapons.

:03:36. > :03:37.Two men have appeared in court charged with murdering a man

:03:38. > :03:40.by pushing him over a canal bridge and prising his hands away

:03:41. > :03:43.27-year-old Russell Robertson's body was discovered near Grahams Road

:03:44. > :03:45.in Falkirk around five o'clock yesterday morning.

:03:46. > :03:47.30-year-old Mark Munro and James Robertson, who's 26,

:03:48. > :03:50.Neither made any plea, and they were remanded in custody.

:03:51. > :03:52.Police in Inverness are investigating a report that

:03:53. > :03:55.a laser pen was aimed at a coastguard rescue helicopter.

:03:56. > :03:58.The aircraft was returning from Skye early yesterday morning when a green

:03:59. > :03:59.laser was shone into the aircraft's cockpit.

:04:00. > :04:13.It's thought it was aimed from the Merkinch area.

:04:14. > :04:16.Detectives have named a man who died during a disturbance in Girvan

:04:17. > :04:18.on Saturday morning as 44-year-old John Kiltie.

:04:19. > :04:20.Police were called after reports of an incident outside a house

:04:21. > :04:24.Two men, aged 24 and 18, have been arrested in connection

:04:25. > :04:35.The men made no plea and were remanded in custody.

:04:36. > :04:37.The average house price in Scotland's seaside towns has

:04:38. > :04:40.grown by almost 40 per cent over the past decade, according

:04:41. > :04:44.Prices since 2005 have increased from an average of around

:04:45. > :04:50.The biggest increases have been seen in Aberdeenshire, with

:04:51. > :04:54.Lerwick in Shetland saw the second biggest growth.

:04:55. > :04:58.Other big risers include Millport and Campbeltown.

:04:59. > :05:01.Football now, and Inverness Caley Thistle have appointed club captain

:05:02. > :05:08.The Irishman replaces John Hughes, who quit earlier this month

:05:09. > :05:11.following a row with the club's board over his transfer budget.

:05:12. > :05:15.Foran has been given a four-year contract describing his appointment

:05:16. > :05:25.as a great opportunity which he relished.

:05:26. > :05:27.The Scotland football manager says his players struggled to even

:05:28. > :05:30.pass the ball to each other in last night's friendly defeat to Italy.

:05:31. > :05:33.Gordon Strachan watched his team lose by one goal to nil in Malta.

:05:34. > :05:36.The Scots only managed one shot on goal in the entire match,

:05:37. > :05:44.and the national coach admits most of his players had a bad night.

:05:45. > :05:50.We were badly off the pace in terms of passing. Whatever people tell you

:05:51. > :05:54.about systems, it is about players being able to beat people and pass.

:05:55. > :06:01.We keep coming to this conversation every time. So, it is something I

:06:02. > :06:05.know. I wish someone would just listen to me.

:06:06. > :06:08.Plans have been unveiled for a unique tilting pier over

:06:09. > :06:11.The see-saw structure is part of a ?750,000 public art project

:06:12. > :06:14.which its backers say will bring an economic and cultural

:06:15. > :06:17.Critics, though, have condemned the proposals, at a time

:06:18. > :06:22.when the local authority is imposing severe budget cuts.

:06:23. > :06:27.For those of you who did not have a fantastic bank holiday in the

:06:28. > :06:38.office, here is the weather! Temperatures were widely around 20

:06:39. > :06:42.Celsius. It is courtesy of this area of high pressure, anchored to the

:06:43. > :06:47.north-west of Scotland, and indeed, staying with us as we go through

:06:48. > :06:48.this week, maintaining settled and mostly dry conditions. Any showers

:06:49. > :06:52.in the West this evening will die mostly dry conditions. Any showers
