:00:00. > :00:00.stability or stupidity? Join me on BBC Two, 11pm in Scotland. On BBC

:00:00. > :00:08.One, time for the news where are. Good night.

:00:09. > :00:12.A mother and her partner have been found guilty of murdering her son,

:00:13. > :00:16.Rachel and Nyomi Fee were found guilty of killing the toddler

:00:17. > :00:22.Both women had denied killing the two-year-old in a house

:00:23. > :00:25.near Glenrothes in Fife, and blamed his death on another child.

:00:26. > :00:41.Even as the verdict was read out in court, Nyomi Fee and Rachel Fee

:00:42. > :00:45.looked passive, looking straight in front of them, guilty of a catalogue

:00:46. > :00:50.of horrendous abuse against two young boys and the murder of a

:00:51. > :00:53.vulnerable young child. It was an escalating pattern of violence

:00:54. > :00:57.against Liam Fee that left him with a broken leg, a fractured arm and

:00:58. > :01:06.ultimately a blow to his small body that it ruptured his heart. Liam

:01:07. > :01:10.Fee's father had broken down in the gallery. Some of those who had been

:01:11. > :01:17.friends with the women sat to the latter stages of the trial. As far

:01:18. > :01:22.as I ventured goes, it's finished. I can't have my kids knowing people

:01:23. > :01:26.like those. Monsters. I can't call them parents. Throughout this long

:01:27. > :01:30.trial, the jury have had to endure some truly awful evidence. Perhaps

:01:31. > :01:34.the worst is a crime scene video from the night the camera died. The

:01:35. > :01:38.camera tracks around the house and into Liam Fee's bedroom and the

:01:39. > :01:45.juries see the boy lying lifeless and pale on the floor, his left leg

:01:46. > :01:48.bent upwards at an awkward angle. It was a distressing that allow some of

:01:49. > :01:55.the jury members in tears and they asked the judge for a break. The

:01:56. > :02:02.jury were excused for Tahir from jury service for ten years. Services

:02:03. > :02:15.are being alerted to Liam Fee several times,. The woman arrived

:02:16. > :02:17.most of the time together. They face life in prison.

:02:18. > :02:20.The trial took seven weeks at the High Court in Livingston,

:02:21. > :02:22.and it took two years to come to court.

:02:23. > :02:25.Our reporter Andrew Anderson has been looking at the background

:02:26. > :02:42.The death of William the -- Liam Fee is one of Scotland's's worst child

:02:43. > :02:48.abuse cases. He suffered at the hands of his mother and her partner.

:02:49. > :02:53.They also inflicted a catalogue of abuse on two other young boys.

:02:54. > :02:57.One-time friends have been left in disbelief. You think you know

:02:58. > :03:01.someone and it just goes to prove that you don't know them. I didn't

:03:02. > :03:08.think in a million years she was capable of any of that stuff,

:03:09. > :03:14.especially towards a baby. Rachel and Rachel Fee moved from the north

:03:15. > :03:18.of England to this house in Fife in 2012. Within these walls, they

:03:19. > :03:23.repeatedly assaulted Liam Fee. He died in this bedroom. Doctors found

:03:24. > :03:30.Liam had suffered a ruptured heart from a bloke to his body. They also

:03:31. > :03:38.discovered double fractures on his leg and arm -- blow. In total, they

:03:39. > :03:44.counted more than 30 injuries. This man once counted Rachel Fee at his

:03:45. > :03:53.best friend. His account is chilling. There was no emotion in

:03:54. > :03:58.them, they were laughing and joking on that they were going to get sent

:03:59. > :04:02.to jail for neglect because they knew they were getting done for

:04:03. > :04:07.neglect anyway, they were saying. But laughing and joking on like, do

:04:08. > :04:13.you think we'll get the same cell together? Back in fact, a major

:04:14. > :04:17.police investigation was underway. Within a bed, a number of objects

:04:18. > :04:23.are hidden that adds to the officers' suspicion. There are cable

:04:24. > :04:29.ties, ropes and a chain. Five months after his death, police charged

:04:30. > :04:33.Nyomi Fee and Rachel Fee with Liam's murder. They are also showered with

:04:34. > :04:38.a catalogue of abuse against two other boys. It was a complex

:04:39. > :04:46.inquiry. The abuse has taken place over a prolonged length of time. We

:04:47. > :04:54.didn't want to miss some of the additional charges that could have

:04:55. > :05:02.been set against the women. Rachel and Rachel Fee's trial took place

:05:03. > :05:06.here. The jury watched video tapes with two young boys who had been in

:05:07. > :05:14.the house the night that Liam died. One was the target the family blamed

:05:15. > :05:19.for Liam's death. The social worker repeatedly reassured the boy that he

:05:20. > :05:23.wasn't in any trouble as they try to untangle his story. What also became

:05:24. > :05:28.clear was the terrible abuse the two boys has suffered. They spoke of

:05:29. > :05:33.being beaten, locked in a cage built from a fireguard, tied up some

:05:34. > :05:45.nights, forced to take hold showers and other abuses to appalling to

:05:46. > :05:49.detail. -- cold. The jury in this trial listen to some of the most

:05:50. > :05:53.horrifying evidence to come before it is a Scottish court. It has left

:05:54. > :05:55.many people shocked, asking how these women could have been so

:05:56. > :05:56.cruel. There's been a decline in how well

:05:57. > :05:58.children in Scottish schools are doing in maths,

:05:59. > :06:03.according to an official survey. The Scottish government says

:06:04. > :06:05.performance is now stabilising, but accepts there's

:06:06. > :06:12.much still to do. Critics have branded

:06:13. > :06:13.the figures appalling. Our Education Correspondent

:06:14. > :06:25.Jamie McIvor reports. George and Josh both do well in

:06:26. > :06:30.maths. It's one of their best subjects. It's fun doing division

:06:31. > :06:38.and times tables. I actually love subjects. It's fun doing division

:06:39. > :06:41.division, it's good. This primary for class seems to really enjoy

:06:42. > :06:45.maths, but across Scotland things are more of a problem. Across the

:06:46. > :06:50.country, a sample of 10,000 children were assessed. Since 2011, the

:06:51. > :06:53.proportion of primary for pupils doing well in maths has fallen

:06:54. > :06:55.significantly, while in primary doing well in maths has fallen

:06:56. > :07:01.seven the drop has been nearly as bad. Figures have been stabilising

:07:02. > :07:06.though in secondary school performance, it is more constant.

:07:07. > :07:09.But this is still a huge challenge for a Government who says that

:07:10. > :07:21.raising attainment has been a huge pair two. We put in a range of

:07:22. > :07:25.measures, designed to support the achievement of numerous A-levels in

:07:26. > :07:28.schools. But it is too early for those to have an affect for the

:07:29. > :07:37.numbers we see in front of us. We will intensify that. The most

:07:38. > :07:42.damning statistic is that only two out of three primary for pupils are

:07:43. > :07:48.confident about numerous day, yet that goes right down in secondary

:07:49. > :07:51.school. Promised action includes schemes to drive at the performance

:07:52. > :07:57.of schools covering disadvantaged areas. This specialist teacher gives

:07:58. > :08:00.extra help and support in maths. Nationally, today's figures are a

:08:01. > :08:04.disappointment. At worst, they suggest failure. Driving up

:08:05. > :08:07.attainment is easier said than done. A man has been arrested

:08:08. > :08:09.in connection with the death Francis Carolan, from

:08:10. > :08:13.Dundasvale Court in the Cowcaddens area of the city, died

:08:14. > :08:15.after a disturbance A 34-year-old is now

:08:16. > :08:21.in police custody. A report will be sent

:08:22. > :08:27.to the Procurator Fiscal. of the Battle of Jutland,

:08:28. > :08:30.the largest naval battle Crowds lined the streets around

:08:31. > :08:36.St Magnus Cathedral in Orkney. Further ceremonies took place

:08:37. > :08:40.at the cemetery at Lyness on Hoy, and in the area of sea off Denmark,

:08:41. > :09:03.where the battle took place. Shoulder to shoulder, Britain and

:09:04. > :09:06.Germany united in commemoration, remembering the thousands who died

:09:07. > :09:12.at sea fighting a war which was supposed to end all wars. Today the

:09:13. > :09:20.talk of peace, reconciliation. Dear friends, let us practice loving each

:09:21. > :09:28.other. For love comes from God. Certainly as a seal upon thine

:09:29. > :09:33.heart, as a seal upon thine arm, because love is strong as death,

:09:34. > :09:37.jealousy is cruel as the grave. Outside, hundreds lined the streets,

:09:38. > :09:42.local people mix with descendants of those who died. People travelled

:09:43. > :09:45.from all over the world to be here today to remember. The dignitaries

:09:46. > :09:49.then sailed across the various ease with the grand Fleet was stationed

:09:50. > :09:55.before the Battle of Jutland, 100 years ago today. Eight Belles

:09:56. > :10:00.signals the end of a watch. Today it symbolised the loss of a sailor. We

:10:01. > :10:05.pray that the carrot and values we commemorate in our forebears will

:10:06. > :10:14.continue to guide the men and women of our naval services today. We

:10:15. > :10:20.acknowledge the pain of so many in the aftermath of the battle and pray

:10:21. > :10:27.for all those who continue to suffer as a result of war. Miles from

:10:28. > :10:33.Orkney, crossing honesty, poppies were scattered from a warship, over

:10:34. > :10:37.the sunken wrecks of the ships, the final resting place of thousands of

:10:38. > :10:38.sailors who died in one of the biggest naval battles the world has

:10:39. > :10:40.ever seen. The First Minister has recommended

:10:41. > :10:42.that James Wolffe QC should be appointed as Scotland's new Lord

:10:43. > :10:45.Advocate. Nicola Sturgeon says Mr Wolffe has

:10:46. > :10:49.an outstanding legal background. He'll replace Frank Mulholland,

:10:50. > :10:52.who's stepping down. Alison Di Rollo will become

:10:53. > :10:57.the new Solicitor General. Rotherham are set to appoint

:10:58. > :10:59.Hibs boss Alan Stubbs The BBC understands

:11:00. > :11:04.Stubbs has agreed terms with the English Championship side

:11:05. > :11:08.and they hope to conclude a deal The Englishman led Hibs

:11:09. > :11:12.to their first Scottish Cup final success in 114 years earlier this

:11:13. > :11:17.month. It's over to Kirsteen now

:11:18. > :11:30.with the weather forecast The beginning of the meteorological

:11:31. > :11:34.summer. In the coming days it will feel like summer across much of

:11:35. > :11:39.Scotland. Tonight, it stays mostly dry. We will hold onto a fair amount

:11:40. > :11:43.of cloud, especially in the north and east, perhaps some drizzle,

:11:44. > :11:48.fairly misty and murky conditions here, some clear spells in the west.

:11:49. > :11:51.Tomorrow morning, we start the day with a fair amount of cloud across

:11:52. > :11:59.the north and west south-eastern areas especially. Around 8:00am,

:12:00. > :12:04.parts of East Lothian and Edinburgh having a cloudy start then this

:12:05. > :12:06.morning. Plenty of centre to come across Dumfries and Galloway, across

:12:07. > :12:11.the central belt. Western coastal areas and into the north-west

:12:12. > :12:16.Highlands and inland parts of the north-east, perhaps a cloudy start

:12:17. > :12:25.across the western isles tomorrow. Along the Murray coast and

:12:26. > :12:31.Aberdeenshire, brisk north-easterly winds. As we go through the day, the

:12:32. > :12:36.cloud will tend to burn back to what's coastal areas, leaving plenty

:12:37. > :12:41.of warm sunshine and a similar story across Northern Ireland. However,

:12:42. > :12:43.across northern England and Wales, a fairly cloudy prospect with our

:12:44. > :12:47.picks of rain continuing to push in from the north-east as we go through

:12:48. > :12:52.the day tomorrow. Giving disappointingly cool under the cloud

:12:53. > :12:54.and in exposure to these brisk north-easterly winds. Across

:12:55. > :12:57.Scotland, towards evening, plenty of north-easterly winds. Across

:12:58. > :13:02.sunshine around again, just across the far north and for some

:13:03. > :13:07.south-eastern areas disappointingly cloudy and cool. Towards Thursday,

:13:08. > :13:12.still high pressure dominating to the north-west of Scotland, keeping

:13:13. > :13:15.things set up and dry here. A similar story across Northern

:13:16. > :13:21.Ireland. However, across England and Wales, a fairly cloudy prospect,

:13:22. > :13:25.some drizzly rain, giving cool towards eastern coastal areas. The

:13:26. > :13:25.best recent and in the west and highs of 20 Celsius.

:13:26. > :13:30.Our next update is during Breakfast at 6:25 tomorrow morning.

:13:31. > :13:34.But, from everyone on the late team here in Glasgow and around
