:00:00. > :00:11.Hello from Glasgow, where we're up all night to bring you referendum

:00:12. > :00:16.We'll have updates for you every hour.

:00:17. > :00:18.There are 32 separate counts in Scotland, one in each

:00:19. > :00:23.We're live at a selection of count centres, from Kirkwall in the north

:00:24. > :00:31.Our political editor Brian Taylor and politics professor Nicola McEwen

:00:32. > :00:36.are here to help make sense of the results.

:00:37. > :00:39.Counting is already well under way across the country.

:00:40. > :00:42.So let's get a sense of how the count process works

:00:43. > :00:45.by going live to our reporters Stephen Godden in Falkirk and, first

:00:46. > :01:09.This is denied, the polls have closed and -- it is Thursday night.

:01:10. > :01:16.The vote will be counted by constituency. The difference is that

:01:17. > :01:22.there will be just one big declaration here and we hope for

:01:23. > :01:31.that just before 3am. The smart money for Glasgow, which is now such

:01:32. > :01:35.an SNP stronghold, is Remain but it will be interesting to see how much

:01:36. > :01:44.of the SNP vote do not agree with the leadership. Turnout we are

:01:45. > :01:50.hearing has been quite good today. We are interested to see whether it

:01:51. > :01:55.is young or old turning out most. My colleague is at the Scottish count

:01:56. > :01:58.HQ. Welcome to the Grangemouth sports

:01:59. > :02:05.complexes at this building has a dual function tonight. The

:02:06. > :02:09.volunteers are already hard at work on counting. They are counting the

:02:10. > :02:15.votes for the Falkirk Council area. It works the same here as in all 32

:02:16. > :02:20.council areas. The votes are verified and counted and then they

:02:21. > :02:24.require permission to declare. That is the second function. This is the

:02:25. > :02:31.regional centre for the EU referendum in Scotland. At the end

:02:32. > :02:36.of the night, we will get to the official total for how Scotland has

:02:37. > :02:41.voted. Unless it comes down to the final Council area we will already

:02:42. > :02:46.know how Scotland has voted. Perhaps it will not come with some of the

:02:47. > :02:49.future you would expect in the election context but it will be

:02:50. > :02:58.loaded with significance which you will no doubt be discussing.

:02:59. > :03:05.How do you expect Scotland to vote? Scotland represents less than a 10th

:03:06. > :03:08.of the overall electorate of the UK but there have been clear and

:03:09. > :03:18.consistent majorities in favour of Remain in Scotland. No doubt it will

:03:19. > :03:31.be one of if not the most enthusiastic nation in the UK to

:03:32. > :03:34.vote Remain. Let's look at a couple of possible scenarios. What of the

:03:35. > :03:38.UK votes to leave and Scotland votes to remain? Whittier from Nicola

:03:39. > :03:45.Sturgeon. I don't think it's any surprise to

:03:46. > :03:48.hear that I think in those circumstances it would be vital for

:03:49. > :03:52.Scotland's voice to be heard directly and for us to sit to our

:03:53. > :03:57.European partners about how we protect our place in Europe and the

:03:58. > :04:06.single market but that is a discussion for Friday if we are in

:04:07. > :04:17.that position because I hope -- but I hope we are not in that position.

:04:18. > :04:26.She is trying to protect Scotland's connection with the EU institutions.

:04:27. > :04:29.She is setting up the respect of a further independence referendum. In

:04:30. > :04:42.the event there is a belief vote in the UK and a -- Leave vote in the UK

:04:43. > :04:48.and a Remain vote in Scotland, she would try to have a second

:04:49. > :04:53.independence referendum. She is seeking power for that to happen. In

:04:54. > :04:59.terms of coverage and the campaign in Scotland, it has been relatively

:05:00. > :05:07.tepid. Boris Johnson was in Scotland today at his daughter's graduation

:05:08. > :05:15.at the University of Saint Andrews. What if Scotland keeps the rest of

:05:16. > :05:22.the UK in? That would be interesting. Those who advocate a

:05:23. > :05:28.Leave vote would complain but they would have no grounds to do so

:05:29. > :05:34.because they were in the campaign in 2014 to keep Scotland in the UK.

:05:35. > :05:37.Nonetheless it would be an entertaining scenario in terms of

:05:38. > :05:46.political tension. Any idea of turnout? Higher than expected. It

:05:47. > :05:48.could potentially benefit Remain. Let's take a quick look at the

:05:49. > :05:56.weather forecast. Many of us have had a fine end to

:05:57. > :06:00.the day with some spells of sunshine. Further towards the west,

:06:01. > :06:03.some showers and these will become more frequent, turning into a longer

:06:04. > :06:09.spells of rain. But all of us will more frequent, turning into a longer

:06:10. > :06:14.stay mild. Showers towards the West will spread further inland. For

:06:15. > :06:19.towards the east coast and the Northern Isles, some mist and low

:06:20. > :06:23.cloud. Temperatures will hold on to double figures. Mild and humid.

:06:24. > :06:26.Tomorrow morning, cloud and rain still with us for a time but

:06:27. > :06:29.throughout the day there will be some sunshine and scattered heavy

:06:30. > :06:40.showers. Some of these have the risk of hail and thunder. Feeling warm

:06:41. > :06:44.again. Saturday is a similar day. Further heavy showers. Perhaps not

:06:45. > :06:49.as torrential as the ones we expect tomorrow. In between the showers

:06:50. > :06:50.there will be some sunny spells and temperatures similar in the mid to

:06:51. > :06:52.high teens. Our next update is

:06:53. > :07:02.at just after 23:30. We expect our first Scottish

:07:03. > :07:05.declaration, possibly Orkney, around midnight.
