:00:00. > :00:00.A 32-year-old man has admitted murdering a Glasgow shopkeeper

:00:00. > :00:09.Tanveer Ahmed drove from Bradford to Glasgow to kill Asad Shah

:00:10. > :00:11.at his shop in the Shawlands area of the city.

:00:12. > :00:29.Aileen Clarke was at the High Court in Glasgow.

:00:30. > :00:36.Asad Shah, a friendly local shopkeeper, much loved by all of the

:00:37. > :00:42.community he served in Glasgow. In person, he was chatty and that beat.

:00:43. > :00:48.He found an outlet on social media, posting his opinions on religion and

:00:49. > :00:55.humanity. Tanveer Ahmed became aware of these postings and believed Asad

:00:56. > :01:04.Shah was disrespecting the Prophet Muhammad. The judge was shown CCTV

:01:05. > :01:14.footage taken from a camera behind the counter of the shop on the night

:01:15. > :01:18.Asad Shah was attacked. Tanveer Ahmed pulls out a knife and comes

:01:19. > :01:23.around to Asad Shah 's side of the counter and start stabbing him

:01:24. > :01:31.repeatedly. More CCTV footage on the road shows Asad Shah being stabbed,

:01:32. > :01:35.punched, way beyond the point he was able to do anything to defend

:01:36. > :01:39.himself. There was a huge public outpouring of shock and sympathy in

:01:40. > :01:47.Glasgow in the days following the murder. He was very friendly and

:01:48. > :01:52.every morning we shook hands and said good day, have a nice day. Just

:01:53. > :02:03.a pleasant, lovely lad. Very sad. Everybody is very sad. I was very

:02:04. > :02:08.upset. A vigil was quickly organised and very well attended. But that

:02:09. > :02:14.grief all the more acute for Asad Shah 's wife and family, left

:02:15. > :02:24.devastated, shaken and scared. It has split the family apart since the

:02:25. > :02:29.incident. Some members of the family have left Scotland or are in the

:02:30. > :02:34.process of leaving. When the police arrived that night, Asad Shah was

:02:35. > :02:39.dying on the pavement. Despite the efforts of a doctor and nurse who

:02:40. > :02:44.came across the scene. Tanveer Ahmed was praying in a bus stop, waiting

:02:45. > :02:50.for the police, even showing them where his knife was lying. He was

:02:51. > :02:51.motivated by his own religious beliefs but that is not an excuse to

:02:52. > :02:59.conduct the actions that he has. beliefs but that is not an excuse to

:03:00. > :03:02.sentiment echoed by the judge who said Tanveer Ahmed was facing a

:03:03. > :03:13.lengthy prison sentence for this shocking crime. The shop stays

:03:14. > :03:14.tightly shuttered. His family cannot face the prospect of running it

:03:15. > :03:16.without him. The killer of Asad Shah

:03:17. > :03:18.hasn't shown any remorse. The court heard that Tanveer Ahmed

:03:19. > :03:20.set out purposefully to carry out the murder,

:03:21. > :03:23.driving from his home in England. Andrew Kerr reports now

:03:24. > :03:25.on what might have motivated him. His report contains comments that

:03:26. > :03:39.you might find upsetting. The city of Bradford and West

:03:40. > :03:43.Yorkshire, Muslims make up a quarter of the population. This was home for

:03:44. > :03:49.Tanveer Ahmed and where he first heard about Asad Shah. He had moved

:03:50. > :03:53.here from Pakistan in 2001 and lived with his wife and family. There was

:03:54. > :03:59.no hint of his capacity for violence. Preceding the act of the

:04:00. > :04:00.crime, there was a calmness but the act itself was four minutes of

:04:01. > :04:05.extreme violence, the likes of which act itself was four minutes of

:04:06. > :04:07.we have not seen before. This is a unique event in terms of where it

:04:08. > :04:12.has happened and why it has happened. So why did the religious

:04:13. > :04:17.musing of say Glasgow newsagent prompt this crime? Tanveer Ahmed has

:04:18. > :04:23.been clear in this Court statement from April. He said Asad Shah

:04:24. > :04:36.disrespected the mizzen will grow messenger of Islam, the Prophet

:04:37. > :04:41.Muhammad. Tanveer Ahmed worked as a taxi driver. He set off before the

:04:42. > :04:47.Easter weekend, his destination, Glasgow South side. After arriving

:04:48. > :04:51.here, Tanveer Ahmed stabbed Asad Shah in the shop. The punishment for

:04:52. > :04:58.what he saw as blasphemy. He made no attempt to escape and was detained

:04:59. > :05:04.by police at the scene. His Volkswagen remained abandoned in the

:05:05. > :05:07.street. Tanveer Ahmed 's hardline views to have some mainstream

:05:08. > :05:11.support in his home country of Pakistan, which has some of the

:05:12. > :05:20.strictest -- strictest blasphemy laws in the world. The BBC spoke to

:05:21. > :05:24.Tanveer Ahmed 's brother in Pakistan, who did not denounce his

:05:25. > :05:30.brother 's actions. Some viewers may find his remarks offensive.

:05:31. > :05:35.TRANSLATION: Are Prophet is the last prophet.

:05:36. > :05:40.Asad Shah negated that by telling lies to everyone in a very wrong

:05:41. > :05:45.way. There was no other way to stop him until his tongue was made

:05:46. > :05:57.silent. Asad Shah was part of a minority

:05:58. > :06:00.sect that has faced persecution. But it was his videos posted online

:06:01. > :06:10.that made him a target for Tanveer Ahmed. If somebody says I am God,

:06:11. > :06:17.you do not go and kill fat person on that ground, this extreme thinking

:06:18. > :06:22.has caused this murder. Asad Shah was confronted with extreme thinking

:06:23. > :06:23.and extreme violence. One mad when simply not tolerate the views of

:06:24. > :06:27.another. -- one man. Earlier tonight, I spoke

:06:28. > :06:29.to Shaima Khalil, the BBC's I asked her to explain the specific

:06:30. > :06:43.background to this case. To understand what inspired Tanveer

:06:44. > :06:46.Ahmed to do what he did, we have to talk about a man called Mumtaz Qadri

:06:47. > :06:53.in Pakistan. This is the man who has become the symbol of the kind of

:06:54. > :06:57.violence that the issue of trust me inspires and provoke. This is a man

:06:58. > :07:00.who killed the governor of Punjab province five years ago because he

:07:01. > :07:07.spoke out about -- against the blasphemy law. He was imprisoned for

:07:08. > :07:10.five years and then hanged. But to many of his borders, they still

:07:11. > :07:16.think of him as a hero, the man who defended the religion and the

:07:17. > :07:18.profit. It is not just Pakistan where he enjoys support. He also

:07:19. > :07:25.profit. It is not just Pakistan enjoys supporting the UK. The

:07:26. > :07:29.religious leader of a mosque in Glasgow expressed regret at his

:07:30. > :07:34.execution. Tanveer Ahmed was quite inspired by him. We spoke to Mumtaz

:07:35. > :07:38.Qadri 's brother who said that Tanveer Ahmed was in close contact

:07:39. > :07:41.with Mumtaz Qadri when he was in jail and he sent him messages and he

:07:42. > :07:46.even had a dream about him, saying that Mumtaz Qadri was chosen for a

:07:47. > :07:53.sitting duty. According to Mumtaz Qadri 's brother, Tanveer Ahmed was

:07:54. > :07:58.very much inspired by what Mumtaz Qadri did and subsequently went

:07:59. > :08:07.ahead to Glasgow and killed Asad Shah.

:08:08. > :08:10.Investigations are continuing into a fatal crash in Argyll

:08:11. > :08:12.yesterday, in which two young children died.

:08:13. > :08:15.A car skidded off the road into a loch just north of Kilmelford

:08:16. > :08:27.It was here at Loch nan Druimnean that the tragedy occurred at around

:08:28. > :08:32.4pm yesterday afternoon. A car skidded off the road and into the

:08:33. > :08:37.water. A 36-year-old woman managed to free herself. She was treated in

:08:38. > :08:41.hospital and later released but two toddlers remained trapped within the

:08:42. > :08:46.vehicle. Eyewitnesses who were on the scene shortly afterwards said

:08:47. > :08:48.they could see no sign of the submerged car and a full-scale

:08:49. > :08:53.emergency operation was then launched. We just noticed a lot of

:08:54. > :08:55.emergency vehicles going up the hill and an hour or so later on, the

:08:56. > :09:02.helicopter turned up, did not seem and an hour or so later on, the

:09:03. > :09:11.to stay long. And then the road was blocked. The emergency services

:09:12. > :09:16.recover the car in the early hours of this morning but unfortunately,

:09:17. > :09:20.the two children were dead. Local people say this stretch of road is

:09:21. > :09:23.notoriously dangerous and there have been several accidents here in the

:09:24. > :09:29.past. Yesterday's events have stand this village community whose

:09:30. > :09:36.population numbers less than 200. This afternoon, police named the two

:09:37. > :09:40.children as Seth and Leia McCorrisken. They issued a plea to

:09:41. > :09:43.anyone who may have witnessed the events surrounding the accident to

:09:44. > :09:45.contact them as their investigations into the crash continue.

:09:46. > :09:46.The Scottish government says it will reconsider

:09:47. > :09:48.the remit of its inquiry into historic child abuse.

:09:49. > :09:50.Education Secretary, John Swinney, met with survivor

:09:51. > :09:53.groups today in the wake of the resignation of the inquiry's

:09:54. > :09:56.Mr Swinney also moved to reassure survivors the inquiry would be

:09:57. > :10:04.An inspection of Aberdeen Crematorium has found some staff

:10:05. > :10:06.believe they were "victims" of the national investigation

:10:07. > :10:09.A visit by Inspector of Crematoria Scotland Robert

:10:10. > :10:12.Swanson was made three days after the publication of

:10:13. > :10:14.That inquiry, by Dame Elish Angiolini, uncovered "unethical

:10:15. > :10:16.and abhorrent practices" at Aberdeen Crematorium.

:10:17. > :10:18.Mr Swanson, however, said he found "good practice"

:10:19. > :10:36.Thousands of people are heading to the T in the Park music

:10:37. > :10:39.festival in Perthshire, where music fans are busy setting up

:10:40. > :10:43.Last year was the first time the event was held

:10:44. > :10:45.at Strathallan Castle, and there was traffic chaos

:10:46. > :10:48.Organisers have introduced new measures, such as the

:10:49. > :10:51.introduction of bus station on site, to try and avoid a repeat

:10:52. > :10:59.Aberdeen are through to the next stage of the Europa League,

:11:00. > :11:01.despite losing to minnows Fola Esch tonight.

:11:02. > :11:04.In a dismal performance, the team from Luxembourg won 1-0,

:11:05. > :11:06.but Aberdeen's first leg victory at Pittodrie means they

:11:07. > :11:10.The Dons live to fight another day and will face Latvian side Ventspils

:11:11. > :11:13.in the second qualifying round, with the first leg at home next

:11:14. > :11:19.Well, it's over to Judith Ralston now with the weather outlook

:11:20. > :11:31.Good evening. The weather seems to be changing every 12 hours. There is

:11:32. > :11:38.rain coming our way but earlier on, we had someone the full sunshine.

:11:39. > :11:44.That weather front now making its way in across the UK, introducing a

:11:45. > :11:48.mix of rain pretty much everywhere. It will be a mild night across the

:11:49. > :11:52.board. A mild start tomorrow. The temperatures we are seeing at the

:11:53. > :11:59.moment are what we will see tomorrow morning. Residual rain affecting

:12:00. > :12:04.many areas initially. The winds will start to freshen as we head through

:12:05. > :12:08.the day as well. As far as the rest of the morning is concerned, the

:12:09. > :12:12.rain will pull away into the North Sea and it will brighten up

:12:13. > :12:18.tomorrow. A risk of catching one or two showers. Something brighter for

:12:19. > :12:23.the West, the best of the sunshine across eastern Scotland. A few

:12:24. > :12:27.showers for Northern Ireland. A fairly cloudy picture for the UK but

:12:28. > :12:33.it will brighten up as well. But a bank of cloud along the south coast.

:12:34. > :12:39.We will lose the rain. Good news for Andy Murray. It should be dry and

:12:40. > :12:44.warm. Temperatures in Scotland, I think it will be warm. 22 Celsius

:12:45. > :12:51.across parts of eastern Scotland, where we see the best of the

:12:52. > :12:55.sunshine. Tomorrow evening ends on a largely dry note. It'll be fine but

:12:56. > :13:00.then we start see the beginnings of the rain feeding into the far west.

:13:01. > :13:06.It is this area of low pressure that will bring us our weather this

:13:07. > :13:09.weekend. Also outbreaks of rain. Starting off Dell with outbreaks of

:13:10. > :13:16.rain on Saturday. The rain becoming confined to the North. Becoming

:13:17. > :13:18.drier elsewhere. It will brighten up with some sunshine. It will feel

:13:19. > :13:22.warm. Quite humid. Our next update is during Breakfast

:13:23. > :13:27.at 6:25 tomorrow morning. But, from everyone on the late team

:13:28. > :13:31.here in Glasgow and around
