:00:00. > :00:00.at some of those. Join me now on BBC Two. That's Newsnight with Evan.

:00:00. > :00:07.Here on BBC One it's time for the news where

:00:08. > :00:13.A man and woman found dead in a tower block in the Tillydrone

:00:14. > :00:15.area of Aberdeen last night were murdered.

:00:16. > :00:24.A second man, thought to be the killer, fell to his death

:00:25. > :00:26.from a balcony after police arrived at the scene.

:00:27. > :00:28.The case has been referred to the police investigations

:00:29. > :00:36.Last night, Aberdeen was basking in the summer sun, people here in

:00:37. > :00:39.Tillydrone were sitting out and enjoying the weather. Children were

:00:40. > :00:41.playing on the grass in the late summer sunshine. Then they heard

:00:42. > :00:44.playing on the grass in the late screaming and shouting from one of

:00:45. > :00:49.these flats. A short time later, they saw a man fall to his death.

:00:50. > :00:53.I've spoken to some of those who witnessed those appalling scenes. It

:00:54. > :00:55.is quite a big shock, to see it as well. This woman watched events

:00:56. > :01:05.is quite a big shock, to see it as unfold last night from her bedroom.

:01:06. > :01:08.She saw a man fall to his death. She is still in shock. It's been playing

:01:09. > :01:11.in my head, I keep seeing the image of him falling, and what I heard

:01:12. > :01:14.when he hit the ground. It keeps playing over and over. It's

:01:15. > :01:21.horrible, it's a shock. I just looked out from the window... This

:01:22. > :01:30.girl lives in the same block. The man passed her window as he fell.

:01:31. > :01:35.There were two police cars, they tried to rescue him. But...

:01:36. > :01:38.There were two police cars, they couldn't. It was another neighbour

:01:39. > :01:42.who dialled 999 last night, after hearing shouting from the building

:01:43. > :01:47.and a woman crying for help. Police arrived to find a man and woman dead

:01:48. > :01:53.in a flat on the 12th floor. As officers entered the building, a

:01:54. > :01:55.second ban fell from the balcony. Throughout the day, friends at teams

:01:56. > :02:01.have continued with their investigations, looking at the

:02:02. > :02:05.Work is going on inside of the flat Work is going on inside of the flat

:02:06. > :02:11.-- forensics teams. Police say that the man and women

:02:12. > :02:20.weren't -- woman were murdered. The man who fell, his death is being

:02:21. > :02:24.investigated by the police watchdog. Because of the circumstances, they

:02:25. > :02:28.have been issued to the Procurator Fiscal to have a look at the

:02:29. > :02:31.Independent circumstances. There is no suggestion of any

:02:32. > :02:35.wrongdoing on the part of the police. Events that unfolded here

:02:36. > :02:43.last night have left many in the Tillydrone area in a state of shock.

:02:44. > :02:47.They may be experiencing their own trauma, police had given assurances

:02:48. > :02:52.that they will lend their support that they perhaps need with whatever

:02:53. > :02:55.they have witnessed last night. Tonight, flowers lie in the shadow

:02:56. > :03:00.of these flats. The events here having cast a shadow

:03:01. > :03:03.of their own. Police have not yet named those who

:03:04. > :03:09.died here last night, but they have said they were all known to one

:03:10. > :03:11.another, and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the

:03:12. > :03:15.murders. They stressed that the incident was

:03:16. > :03:19.very much restricted to the flat and people here in Tillydrone, although

:03:20. > :03:27.they may be traumatised, should have no fears for their own safety.

:03:28. > :03:29.Andrew Anderson there. There was no growth in the Scottish

:03:30. > :03:32.economy in the first three The latest official statistics show

:03:33. > :03:35.Scottish output rose last year, at less than half the rate seen

:03:36. > :03:38.across the UK as a whole. But unemployment has fallen

:03:39. > :03:41.in Scotland, and across the UK Our business correspondent

:03:42. > :03:44.David Henderson has been assessing what the figures mean

:03:45. > :03:49.and reports from Aberdeen. This is Aberdeen Harbour, where the

:03:50. > :03:57.vessels that support the North Sea oil platforms offshore are based.

:03:58. > :04:02.But, this entire industry and indeed Aberdeen and beyond have been badly

:04:03. > :04:07.affected by the fall in the price of oil. The end result? Scotland's

:04:08. > :04:14.economy did not grow in the first three months of the year. And has

:04:15. > :04:20.barely grown in the whole year. The effect has been felt not just by

:04:21. > :04:24.those who are directly employed by the offshore industry. I've been to

:04:25. > :04:29.speak to a farmer who was based just north of Aberdeen who has had to

:04:30. > :04:32.change his expansion plans to cope with the impact of the downturn.

:04:33. > :04:35.My name is David Stephen, I am a farmer, in Aberdeenshire.

:04:36. > :04:46.We started with the soft fruit, growing solely raspberries,

:04:47. > :04:52.We had to do something to salvage it, and so we decided to

:04:53. > :04:56.make it into a set of apartments, the walls were falling in, the roof

:04:57. > :05:01.was falling in, we did a lot of renovations.

:05:02. > :05:09.The initial plan was to capture a Monday to Friday while

:05:10. > :05:12.workers, people working in the oil industry who did not have

:05:13. > :05:18.That market has disappeared completely.

:05:19. > :05:22.We think now that we will focus more on the tourism side of things.

:05:23. > :05:24.This is where your venue is going to be,

:05:25. > :05:29.We were at a wedding four years ago, a similar

:05:30. > :05:30.type building, farm buildings had been converted.

:05:31. > :05:40.We thought it was a fantastic idea and something we would like to

:05:41. > :05:53.Our business is hampered by the effects of the oil industry.

:05:54. > :05:59.other markets we can tap into, we think

:06:00. > :06:02.that we can overcome the shortfalls of the business side of Aberdeen at

:06:03. > :06:07.A Scottish soldier who died while training in Brecon in Wales

:06:08. > :06:09.had just finished an eight mile fitness test, according

:06:10. > :06:13.Corporal Joshua Hoole from Ecclefechan near Lockerbie had

:06:14. > :06:14.been training in preparation for the

:06:15. > :06:24.Earlier, I spoke to our Wales reporter Caroline Evans in Brecon.

:06:25. > :06:31.The news emerged this morning that Corporal Joshua Hoole died here

:06:32. > :06:37.yesterday, we were told ambulances were called here in Brecon just

:06:38. > :06:42.before nine o'clock and during the day we had learned that he had been

:06:43. > :06:47.on this eight mile march, a fitness test that we are told is annual and

:06:48. > :06:52.takes place where soldiers are expected to carry 25 kilos, around

:06:53. > :06:56.the local roads here. Something the Ministry of Defence says is not

:06:57. > :07:02.expected to be taxing. But you may remember that three years ago, three

:07:03. > :07:07.soldiers died of heat exhaustion out on the Brecon Beacons while they

:07:08. > :07:13.were trying to be recruited into the SAS. That, inevitably, has turned

:07:14. > :07:18.minds to this. People are asking if lessons have been learned from that

:07:19. > :07:21.situation will stop the Ministry of Defence has responded in a

:07:22. > :07:27.statement, saying that they had implemented recommendations to make

:07:28. > :07:30.training as safe as possible. But they say that the circumstances of

:07:31. > :07:33.Corporal Joshua Hoole's death are different.

:07:34. > :07:37.Two people have been injured in what police have described

:07:38. > :07:40.as a "disturbance" in Fort William, which is understood to have

:07:41. > :07:43.A 49-year-old man has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal

:07:44. > :07:54.The 73-year-old man is in a critical but stable condition in hospital

:07:55. > :07:57.in Glasgow, while a woman in her 60s has been released

:07:58. > :08:01.Scotland is to introduce a new law to tackle child poverty.

:08:02. > :08:03.The bill is expected to follow the recommendations

:08:04. > :08:05.of the country's poverty tsar, and may include child poverty

:08:06. > :08:07.targets based on household income, similar to those recently dropped

:08:08. > :08:14.Our political correspondent Lucy Adams reports.

:08:15. > :08:25.Nicola Sturgeon said that it is important

:08:26. > :08:27.that the government's ambitions to eradicate child poverty

:08:28. > :08:31.That underlines the seriousness of the

:08:32. > :08:33.ambitions and means we are in a very formal

:08:34. > :08:37.way held to account on the

:08:38. > :08:40.delivery of those ambitions, tackling poverty and child poverty

:08:41. > :08:42.in particular, making sure as far as we can

:08:43. > :08:52.life because of the conditions they are born into and grow up into is

:08:53. > :08:55.one of the most important things, perhaps the most important thing in

:08:56. > :08:59.an overarching sense, that any government can do.

:09:00. > :09:02.The aim of the new law will be to ensure better futures for

:09:03. > :09:07.The announcement came as the First Minister said that

:09:08. > :09:09.she was reappointing the Independent Poverty Adviser.

:09:10. > :09:11.I feel very strongly that we can make it less

:09:12. > :09:14.awful to live in poverty while at the same time reducing poverty.

:09:15. > :09:17.More than one in five children in Scotland live in poverty,

:09:18. > :09:19.it means they cannot obtain the kind of diet

:09:20. > :09:21.or living conditions which are the norm in

:09:22. > :09:32.For some, a little help has made all the

:09:33. > :09:40.I was struggling to find what I wanted to do, I tried

:09:41. > :09:47.I had been auditioned, but some people were more likely to get

:09:48. > :09:50.it than me because they had higher grades but the Princes Trust

:09:51. > :09:54.Political opponents welcome the focus on poverty, but they say

:09:55. > :09:56.that the Scottish Government must take more responsibility.

:09:57. > :09:58.What I would say to Nicola Sturgeon, the

:09:59. > :10:00.government has been in power for nine years, they have seen

:10:01. > :10:04.what has gone on for nine years, they have

:10:05. > :10:07.the power coming to them, a new welfare reform, they can use

:10:08. > :10:09.that to eradicate problems, it is not just

:10:10. > :10:12.about blaming Westminster, they must look at their own backyard.

:10:13. > :10:14.Consultation for the bill will be published over the summer, the

:10:15. > :10:22.ultimate success will depend upon people working together.

:10:23. > :10:25.Football - and Celtic made sure there was no repeat of last week's

:10:26. > :10:27.embarrassment in Gibraltar, with a 3-0 victory over Lincoln Red

:10:28. > :10:33.Goals from Mikael Lustig, Leigh Griffiths, Patrick Roberts

:10:34. > :10:35.were enough for the Scottish champions to overcome

:10:36. > :10:41.The Scottish champions will now play FC Astana of Kazakhstan in the next

:10:42. > :10:46.round of the Champions League qualifiers.

:10:47. > :10:48.Yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far,

:10:49. > :10:50.but many parts of Scotland saw torrential rain, with thunder

:10:51. > :10:56.Almost the whole country was affected.

:10:57. > :10:58.There was a power cut in the Aberdeen area,

:10:59. > :11:01.flash flooding in many parts, and travel disruption.

:11:02. > :11:03.Tonight, drivers are being urged to be aware

:11:04. > :11:07.And some North Sea helicopter flights have been grounded

:11:08. > :11:10.as a precaution due to the risk of lightning strikes.

:11:11. > :11:12.Yes, July in Scotland, flooded roads and lightning strikes!

:11:13. > :11:18.Let's get the latest on the forecast from Kirsteen.

:11:19. > :11:27.Thank you. Good evening. Very lively weather today across the country,

:11:28. > :11:31.tonight we can offer something much calmer, it becomes dry for most of

:11:32. > :11:35.us. Certainly with some clear spells. One exception to the rule

:11:36. > :11:39.comes in the form of the ruminants of today's rain, just holding on

:11:40. > :11:44.primarily across Shetland night, thundery downpours to come here. A

:11:45. > :11:49.Met Office yellow warning remains in force until tomorrow morning.

:11:50. > :11:54.Otherwise staying dry with clear spells. A more comfortable night

:11:55. > :12:02.forced into night, I think. Temperatures of 10-14d for most of

:12:03. > :12:07.us. Much less muddy. Tomorrow, largely dry with spells of

:12:08. > :12:13.brightness and sunshine around. Especially around central and

:12:14. > :12:19.eastern Scotland -- much less muddy. More cloud on Western and coastal

:12:20. > :12:22.areas, spots of rain in the north-west, and in Shetland, the

:12:23. > :12:26.rain still hangs on but will continue to clear as we go through

:12:27. > :12:29.the morning. Looking at the country as a whole as we go through the day

:12:30. > :12:34.tomorrow, most are under the influence of a bridge of

:12:35. > :12:38.high-pressure, keeping conditions settled and mostly dry, a scattering

:12:39. > :12:40.of showers, perhaps a mini on the way of heavy rain moving into

:12:41. > :12:46.Northern Ireland as we had through the day. In the sunshine, the

:12:47. > :12:53.temperature is widely reach the high teens into the low 20s, a feeling of

:12:54. > :12:58.pleasant and sunny spells. Tomorrow evening in Scotland, cloud increases

:12:59. > :13:02.in the West and followed by outbreaks of rain that will track

:13:03. > :13:06.across the country during Thursday night. On Friday across the UK, this

:13:07. > :13:15.week whether friend will move west to east, producing showers, perhaps

:13:16. > :13:19.rain at times, -- weather front. There will be spells of brightness

:13:20. > :13:20.and sunshine, and it pleasantly warm feel with highs of around 25

:13:21. > :13:28.degrees. ??HOTKEY thank you. And that's all from

:13:29. > :13:31.Reporting Scotland tonight.
