:00:13. > :00:16.A surgeon at one of Scotland's busiest hospitals says plans to move

:00:17. > :00:18.key services will put patients at risk.

:00:19. > :00:21.People attending Monklands Hospital's A will have to go

:00:22. > :00:23.elsewhere for some emergency treatments if local health board

:00:24. > :00:32.Our political correspondent Lucy Adams reports.

:00:33. > :00:36.It's the hospital the current government fought to save.

:00:37. > :00:39.It is this government's view that the decisions to close A

:00:40. > :00:41.at Monklands in Ayr were wrong and they will now be reversed.

:00:42. > :00:49.The hospital that the former Health Secretary almost lost his job over.

:00:50. > :00:54.NHS Lanarkshire are having a meeting this Thursday...

:00:55. > :00:56.And it is the hospital patients have pledged to save.

:00:57. > :00:59.Now, though, there is anger as campaigners say

:01:00. > :01:03.the Scottish Government is backsliding on earlier pledges

:01:04. > :01:05.with moves afoot to cut orthopaedics and trauma,

:01:06. > :01:10.Those plans are also opposed by the consultants themselves,

:01:11. > :01:17.Patients' safety will be put at risk by their decision

:01:18. > :01:26.If you have an A department, you must have an orthopaedic

:01:27. > :01:32.You cannot have just an A department and expect all

:01:33. > :01:40.At a meeting today between staff and the local MSP Alex Neil,

:01:41. > :01:45.Mr Neil stood on a ticket to save services and is under

:01:46. > :01:50.I'm absolutely determined, as I know Shona Robison,

:01:51. > :01:54.the Health Minister is, determined to make sure there is no

:01:55. > :01:57.downgrading of Monklands, no downgrading of the Accident

:01:58. > :02:02.The health board argue that is not what they are doing,

:02:03. > :02:06.but as I say, there are too many unanswered questions for this to go

:02:07. > :02:10.The Scottish Government say they saved the A department

:02:11. > :02:17.We are confident, as are the medical royal colleges, that

:02:18. > :02:18.safety will be improved, quality will be improved

:02:19. > :02:22.Change is hard, change is not always universally accepted.

:02:23. > :02:24.But we believe that orthopaedic care in NHS Lanarkshire will be improved

:02:25. > :02:36.Another series of strikes by ScotRail workers planned to begin

:02:37. > :02:38.at the weekend has been suspended to allow for further talks.

:02:39. > :02:42.Members of the RMT union had been due to take part in three 48-hour

:02:43. > :02:45.walkouts in a row over who opens and closes the train doors,

:02:46. > :02:53.but have agreed to hold off taking more action for the time being.

:02:54. > :02:55.We have not received guarantees about the guard remaining

:02:56. > :03:00.The outstanding issue for us is the doors,

:03:01. > :03:12.That's an issue that we need to have further discussion with ScotRail

:03:13. > :03:20.in order to find a way forward on the train dispatch, the doors.

:03:21. > :03:24.Today's suspension of strike action is very welcome for all of us.

:03:25. > :03:27.After several weeks of hard work, we're not there yet,

:03:28. > :03:31.a lot of hard work still to do, but a great step forward.

:03:32. > :03:35.It was always about our customers and our people.

:03:36. > :03:38.And I think it's a good sign for what we can agree.

:03:39. > :03:41.The Bank of Scotland is closing 23 branches across the country.

:03:42. > :03:43.It says the move is a result of falling customer demand

:03:44. > :03:46.and because of overlaps with other nearby branches.

:03:47. > :03:49.Closures will take place in the Highlands, the North East,

:03:50. > :03:53.Tayside, the Central Belt and the Borders.

:03:54. > :03:56.The Glasgow-based firm Aggreko has reported a fall in profits

:03:57. > :04:01.It made ?61 million compared to ?102 million in the same

:04:02. > :04:04.The firm says the trading environment has been difficult,

:04:05. > :04:10.with the lower oil price continuing to impact a number of its markets.

:04:11. > :04:14.The bus driver who drove into floods which resulted in everyone on board

:04:15. > :04:18.having to be rescued by helicopter, has escaped a driving ban.

:04:19. > :04:23.Tudor Davies had faced a dangerous driving charge but after a trial

:04:24. > :04:25.at Ayr Sheriff Court he was convicted of the lesser

:04:26. > :04:30.He has already been dismissed by the Stagecoach bus company.

:04:31. > :04:36.A rescue helicopter hovering over a bus stranded

:04:37. > :04:42.The number 58 bus was on its way from Girvan to Ayr on 30th December

:04:43. > :04:46.last year as Storm Frank raged all around Ayrshire.

:04:47. > :04:50.The driver, Tudor Davies, told the court when he got

:04:51. > :04:53.to the outskirts of the village of Dailly there was already 4-5

:04:54. > :05:00.He stopped to assess the situation and decided to press on.

:05:01. > :05:04.Mr Davies said 10-15 yards later, when he was around here,

:05:05. > :05:08.the force of the water knocked down this wall producing an enormous

:05:09. > :05:11.surge of floodwater, which picked the bus up,

:05:12. > :05:14.took it across the road and slammed it into those trees, breaking

:05:15. > :05:21.These pictures taken inside the bus show how quickly the

:05:22. > :05:26.Moments after these were taken, the 12 passengers on board,

:05:27. > :05:29.including two children, headed to the back of the bus

:05:30. > :05:31.and climbed on seats and grabbed bars to try to keep

:05:32. > :05:35.as much as possible out of the filthy floodwater.

:05:36. > :05:38.Attempts by the Fire Service to rescue them were abandoned due

:05:39. > :05:41.to the ferocity of the water, and it was hours later before

:05:42. > :05:50.The sheriff today acknowledged that this was a traumatic event

:05:51. > :05:53.for the passengers on the bus and for the driver.

:05:54. > :05:55.In fact, she said some of the passengers who had

:05:56. > :05:57.come to give evidence were still traumatised.

:05:58. > :06:00.But she said the danger of the wall collapsing was not obvious

:06:01. > :06:03.to Mr Davies at the time, and so she could not convict him

:06:04. > :06:04.of dangerous driving, instead she convicted him

:06:05. > :06:11.She imposed nine penalty points on his licence and fined him ?2000.

:06:12. > :06:14.That decision to drive forward, the sheriff said, was

:06:15. > :06:23.Aileen Clarke, Reporting Scotland, Dailly.

:06:24. > :06:25.An Australian family living in the Highlands say they're

:06:26. > :06:28.still hopeful of being allowed to stay, despite a letter

:06:29. > :06:31.from the Home Office warning that official moves are now being made

:06:32. > :06:34.The Brain family moved to Scotland under a visa system that has

:06:35. > :06:37.since been abolished, but as Craig Anderson reports,

:06:38. > :06:43.they're pinning their hopes on a job offer.

:06:44. > :06:46.It's a letter the Brain family hoped they would never see...

:06:47. > :06:48.From Immigration Minister Robert Goodwill, it says there are no

:06:49. > :06:51.exceptional circumstances and that staff will contact the couple

:06:52. > :06:53.later this week to discuss arrangements for their voluntary

:06:54. > :07:01.The visa scheme they came here under was done away with once they had

:07:02. > :07:03.committed to emigrate to Scotland and they insist they are not

:07:04. > :07:05.pleading for special treatment, just for the Government

:07:06. > :07:12.All of our home and worldly goods were on a shipping container halfway

:07:13. > :07:15.across to Scotland when this apparent announcement came out

:07:16. > :07:17.saying they would be cancelling this visa option 12 months

:07:18. > :07:24.By then we were fully committed to the process.

:07:25. > :07:28.So we're not asking for special treatment, we're just asking

:07:29. > :07:30.the Government to honour what they put in the

:07:31. > :07:36.The couple's MP argues that unlike many people hoping to gain

:07:37. > :07:38.residency in the UK, the Brains are in a unique situation

:07:39. > :07:44.and the Home Office is guilty of bad faith in their dealings with them.

:07:45. > :07:48.The Government in London should do what is right and being asked

:07:49. > :07:51.of them, it's not about a special case, it is giving Kathryn

:07:52. > :07:53.the rights she should have, and making sure the family

:07:54. > :07:57.We need young families in the Highlands, why on earth

:07:58. > :07:59.would the Government want to throw them out?

:08:00. > :08:02.Is disgraceful and shouldn't be allowed to happen.

:08:03. > :08:04.It was Kathryn Brain's student visa that initially allowed

:08:05. > :08:07.the family to come here, and the one hope they now have

:08:08. > :08:10.is that even while the Home Office's deportation wheels are turning,

:08:11. > :08:16.that she receives the offer of a job that meets immigration requirements.

:08:17. > :08:19.We've had a contact from a major Scottish employer this morning.

:08:20. > :08:23.Or at least from the office, the CEO will call us this afternoon.

:08:24. > :08:26.We don't know what the job offer is, we don't know whether it

:08:27. > :08:32.The fact it comes from a major company, we would like to think

:08:33. > :08:34.they would be able to inform themselves of the requirements

:08:35. > :08:37.and it gives us some cause for cautious optimism.

:08:38. > :08:40.But for now, living on charity and with their belongings

:08:41. > :08:42.in a shipping container, the future path for the Brain

:08:43. > :08:50.Craig Anderson, Reporting Scotland, Dingwall.

:08:51. > :08:52.Celtic are through to the Champions League play-off

:08:53. > :08:55.round after beating Astana 2-1 at Parkhead to secure

:08:56. > :09:00.A Leigh Griffiths penalty put Celtic in front at the end

:09:01. > :09:03.Astana levelled it before Moussa Dembele also scored

:09:04. > :09:06.from the penalty spot in stoppage time, his first goal for the club,

:09:07. > :09:14.Andy Murray will be Great Britain's flag bearer at the Olympic Games

:09:15. > :09:18.He follows in the footsteps of Olympic cycle champion

:09:19. > :09:20.Sir Chris Hoy, who paraded the flag at London 2012.

:09:21. > :09:23.And Sir Chris has been telling Kheredine Idessane how impressed

:09:24. > :09:39.he is with the number of Scots in Team GB.

:09:40. > :09:47.Fantastic. Great reflection on the commitment and hard work that the

:09:48. > :09:50.Scottish athletes have put in to get to the stage. In terms of ones to

:09:51. > :09:53.look forward to seeing. I think Skinner has to be the top of the

:09:54. > :09:56.list. I saw him at Meadowbank as a child, training to ride the track

:09:57. > :10:01.there. He has progressed right through and he has replaced the end

:10:02. > :10:06.of the Team Sprint. He will be writing the third lap. You are a fan

:10:07. > :10:08.of Andy Murray, he is the defending champion and playing doubles with

:10:09. > :10:14.his big brother. Exceptional. They could get two gold medals at the end

:10:15. > :10:18.of the championships. He has had a fantastic year so far. Morality big

:10:19. > :10:23.part of sport, once you have the momentum and the belief going in

:10:24. > :10:26.yourself, and with the form, you can almost do anything. They would be

:10:27. > :10:31.crazy to bet against him winning a second title here. Who knows about

:10:32. > :10:35.the doubles, that would be amazing for both Andy Murray and Jamie

:10:36. > :10:40.Murray. He is a real figurehead. Two things have dominated the build-up

:10:41. > :10:45.to these Olympics, one has been drugs, the other has been well the

:10:46. > :10:50.city be ready. Many viewers sadly I believe wonder, can I trust what I

:10:51. > :10:53.am watching, can I believe these Olympics or is everyone on

:10:54. > :10:58.something? What is your take on that? I can understand why some of

:10:59. > :11:04.the public might think that. Certainly, as a fan spot myself,

:11:05. > :11:08.there are huge number of depressing headlines coming out recently. All

:11:09. > :11:13.you can do is talk about your own experiences. You won six Olympic

:11:14. > :11:19.gold medals clean. Your messages what? It is purely and simply that

:11:20. > :11:21.it is possible to do it the right way.

:11:22. > :11:23.Well, it's over to Kawser now with the weather outlook

:11:24. > :11:41.Some of us some heavy this evening. Although it remained mild and breezy

:11:42. > :11:44.it is this area of low pressure that brought those heavy downpours. Some

:11:45. > :11:49.were stunned as well. While the centre of the low pressure as light

:11:50. > :11:53.winds and variable winds, around then it is quite strong, especially

:11:54. > :11:57.towards the South West of Scotland and the South of England and also

:11:58. > :12:00.across the North East of Scotland, strong winds here. Rain for a time

:12:01. > :12:06.that becoming drier across the central areas and clear spells will

:12:07. > :12:11.develop as well. Temperatures around 14 15 degrees. Mild like last night.

:12:12. > :12:14.For tomorrow morning, it is rather cloudy to start and some showers

:12:15. > :12:18.across the far North and North East of the country. At eight o'clock if

:12:19. > :12:24.you're heading out then, largely dry across the South West, some showers

:12:25. > :12:28.along the East coast with temperatures widely around 14 or 15

:12:29. > :12:31.Celsius. Towards the far North and the Western Isles, breezy but our

:12:32. > :12:35.beaks of showery rain for the Northern Isles. For the rest of the

:12:36. > :12:40.day, every look at the rest of the UK, we will continue to see some

:12:41. > :12:43.showers for a time. Gradually improving, some brightness

:12:44. > :12:47.developing, sunny spells, along the West cost of Scotland and elsewhere

:12:48. > :12:52.people see some brighter spells. Temperatures around 17, up to 22

:12:53. > :12:56.degrees for the South East of England. Although temperatures are

:12:57. > :13:00.similar to today, temperatures will be fresher with the wind having an

:13:01. > :13:04.effect. Tomorrow night and into Friday, we developed this thread of

:13:05. > :13:08.high-pressure Soubry will start to see some drier and brighter weather.

:13:09. > :13:11.high-pressure Soubry will start to Friday morning begins sunny with

:13:12. > :13:15.showers around. The showers will be widespread across the West coast of

:13:16. > :13:20.Scotland and Northern Ireland, the far North of Scotland as well.

:13:21. > :13:24.Elsewhere, drier, the best of the sunshine towards the East.

:13:25. > :13:28.Temperatures around 16 up. Fresher on Friday with that went. -- wind.

:13:29. > :13:32.Our next update is during Breakfast at 6:25am tomorrow morning.

:13:33. > :13:34.But, from everyone on the late team here in Glasgow and around
