:00:00. > :00:07.Tonight, on Reporting Scotland: It's not hard and it's not soft -

:00:08. > :00:10.the First Minister urges Scottish business leaders to back her search

:00:11. > :00:24.It's been just over a month since the RAF gunner Corrie McKeague

:00:25. > :00:27.went missing and his mother now worries a third party may be

:00:28. > :00:33.It's very hard to think of anything else that has happened to him other

:00:34. > :00:36.than he has gone in a vehicle. The Rangers mid fielder

:00:37. > :00:38.Joey Barton will get clarity on his future with club,

:00:39. > :00:43.when they meet tomorrow. And is this how to encourage girls

:00:44. > :00:56.to take up a career in engineering? The First Minister has urged

:00:57. > :00:59.Scottish business leaders to back her in seeking a deal

:01:00. > :01:02.to protect Scotland's interests Nicola Sturgeon argued that the top

:01:03. > :01:08.priority was to maintain access to the European single market

:01:09. > :01:11.in goods and services. Otherwise, she warned that trade

:01:12. > :01:14.and jobs would suffer. But her political opponents

:01:15. > :01:16.challenged her to drop her back-up This from our political

:01:17. > :01:33.editor Brian Taylor. Nicola Sturgeon, in Edinburgh, in

:01:34. > :01:37.search of common ground. I think there is a real opportunity to

:01:38. > :01:42.present to the UK Government a unified Scottish position, and all

:01:43. > :01:48.Scotland coalition support for the single market. And all Scotland

:01:49. > :01:53.coalition of businesses and universities and others to resist a

:01:54. > :01:59.hard Brexit. The aim, to put weight behind Scotland's demand to stay

:02:00. > :02:04.close to the European single market. In the audience, concerns over

:02:05. > :02:08.investment. In Scotland, outside the single market, there are concerns

:02:09. > :02:13.these companies will go to other parts of Europe. I think it is

:02:14. > :02:17.important to retain a Scottish identity and retain some form of

:02:18. > :02:23.focus on Scotland in the single market. There is real anxiety as

:02:24. > :02:28.well. I don't care if you live in Scotland, England, Wales, Northern

:02:29. > :02:31.Ireland, whether you are male, female or kangaroo, I just want

:02:32. > :02:38.certainty so that I can give that to my staff and grow the business. This

:02:39. > :02:43.matters. Scotland trades heavily with the EU. A report reckons Brexit

:02:44. > :02:48.could cost up to 80,000 Scottish jobs. In relation to the issue of

:02:49. > :02:52.clarity on the aim is the government has in relation to Brexit... The

:02:53. > :02:57.Prime Minister says she understands and wants a deal that will benefit

:02:58. > :03:01.the whole of the UK so what might happen? The single market consists

:03:02. > :03:11.currently of the 28 EU member states plus Iceland, bleached and Steyn and

:03:12. > :03:18.Norway -- Liechtenstein. Then there is Switzerland which has accessed

:03:19. > :03:22.through multiple treaties. Now some EU voices questioning the existing

:03:23. > :03:26.membership. Crucially, all members of the single market are full

:03:27. > :03:32.autonomous states, not like Scotland, a devolved section of a

:03:33. > :03:38.bigger state. EU legal experts like Doctor Tobias Lok spell it out. That

:03:39. > :03:43.poses a challenge for Scotland. The starting point he says would be to

:03:44. > :03:48.get the UK Government on side. Scotland needs new powers under the

:03:49. > :03:53.devolution system. Not only to sign up to an organisation like this, but

:03:54. > :03:58.to comply with all the rules and organisation has, such as rules on

:03:59. > :04:02.product standards, rules on financial services and importantly,

:04:03. > :04:07.rules on immigration. Doctor Lough stresses that anything is possible

:04:08. > :04:09.in the EU if the will is there will stop Greenland was allowed to leave

:04:10. > :04:18.in the EU if the will is there will the EU while remaining part of then

:04:19. > :04:24.mark. Could Scotland example lie here, the French Belgian speaking

:04:25. > :04:30.province of Wallonia. The parliament is currently blocking a major deal

:04:31. > :04:37.between the EU and Canada. But it is not in the single market, that is

:04:38. > :04:42.reserved to Belgium. In all, the sort of conundrum which might appeal

:04:43. > :04:52.to Wallonia's famous son, the artist Renae Matt greet. -- Magritte.

:04:53. > :05:00.What'll happen in the meantime? I expect they will publish proposals

:05:01. > :05:06.for ways that Scotland's interests will be protected as much as it is

:05:07. > :05:10.possible. They will publish proposals before Christmas setting

:05:11. > :05:14.up options for ways of protecting those interests. I will not be at

:05:15. > :05:19.all surprised if they don't feature heavily in the European Economic

:05:20. > :05:26.Area that I referred to there. The options will be advanced and put

:05:27. > :05:32.forward to the UK Government. That is confirmed by Mike Russell,

:05:33. > :05:40.Scotland's Brexit minister. We also know there is something else in

:05:41. > :05:44.Nicola Sturgeon's back pocket, and independents referendum? This is

:05:45. > :05:49.like a Magritte masterpiece. It works on several levels. This is

:05:50. > :05:55.within the ambit of the United Kingdom, a genuine issue of policy,

:05:56. > :05:59.but there is strategy as well. In the longer term, they might wish to

:06:00. > :06:03.demonstrate that they have pursued every avenue, that they have

:06:04. > :06:06.exhausted every option and that it came to nothing within the ambit of

:06:07. > :06:13.the UK, and at that point, they might argue and convince the people

:06:14. > :06:14.of Scotland, that it is justified to seek a further vote on independence.

:06:15. > :06:16.Thank you. Meanwhile fishing industry leaders

:06:17. > :06:19.in Scotland say they're encouraged by talks they've held in London

:06:20. > :06:21.with the UK government on the opportunities and challenges

:06:22. > :06:23.presented by Brexit. The organisation, which campaigned

:06:24. > :06:25.for a Leave vote in June's referendum, says control over

:06:26. > :06:27.British waters will bring huge potential benefits

:06:28. > :06:39.to Scottish fishing. We have a very strong hand that is

:06:40. > :06:45.completely understood of course, by the secretary of state, and we are

:06:46. > :06:48.now asking both governments for us in Scottish fishing, both relevant

:06:49. > :06:52.governments, to work together on this, because this is one of the

:06:53. > :06:54.best patches of maritime real estate in the world.

:06:55. > :06:58.Judges are to issue a written decision on whether a private

:06:59. > :07:02.Final legal arguments were heard at the Court of Session

:07:03. > :07:06.Relatives of three of the six people who died in the crash in December

:07:07. > :07:09.2014 are seeking permission from the court to bring charges

:07:10. > :07:14.One of two police officers seriously injured after being deliberately

:07:15. > :07:17.run down by a car has been released from hospital.

:07:18. > :07:20.The man and his female colleague were knocked down

:07:21. > :07:22.after they responded to a disturbance in the Knightswood

:07:23. > :07:27.The woman, who was more seriously injured spent some time in intensive

:07:28. > :07:32.Police are still hunting the occupants of the car

:07:33. > :07:46.and are treating the incident as attempted murder.

:07:47. > :07:54.A campaign is growing to cut speed limits in a Perthshire town after

:07:55. > :07:59.the death of a baby girl. Someone changed 30 mph signs to 20. That has

:08:00. > :08:03.been criticised by the police that some have said they wanted to be

:08:04. > :08:06.enforced throughout the town. Flowers still mark the scene where

:08:07. > :08:11.Harlow Edwards was killed two weeks ago. She was walking along the

:08:12. > :08:15.pavement when she was struck by a car after it collided with another

:08:16. > :08:20.vehicle. The two-year-old's funeral took place yesterday. Her older

:08:21. > :08:29.brother and teenage sister are recovering from serious injuries. An

:08:30. > :08:32.investigation into the cause of accident is continuing, but it has

:08:33. > :08:35.shocked people in the town and has led to increased calls for speed

:08:36. > :08:37.limits to be cut. There is a 30 mile per limit in force on these roads

:08:38. > :08:41.but a couple of hundred yards further on it changes to 60. People

:08:42. > :08:49.here say they have campaigned to have a 20 mph limit throughout the

:08:50. > :08:51.town and that Harlow's death adds urgency to that campaign. But

:08:52. > :08:55.opinions on whether that would work are divided. There are lots of

:08:56. > :09:01.people, possibly kids knocking around, I think 20 mph would be

:09:02. > :09:06.reasonable. I think it is a very good idea. Everybody who knows the

:09:07. > :09:10.area knows the police are there twice a week. Someone took direct

:09:11. > :09:16.action, changing some of the signs to 20. They have been changed back

:09:17. > :09:20.but it is perhaps a sign of frustration. A lot of people are

:09:21. > :09:25.very angry, however, that was an illegal action. While it might have

:09:26. > :09:30.given people a bit of cheer, it was soon rectified. Whoever did it

:09:31. > :09:34.removed it very quickly. The police have issued a stern warning. They

:09:35. > :09:39.say they regularly carry out speed enforcement activity in the area and

:09:40. > :09:47.altering statutory signs, as well as being an offence, risks jeopardising

:09:48. > :09:49.police efforts to enforce the listing legal speed limits. The

:09:50. > :09:52.council say they are planning a range of further measures to

:09:53. > :09:56.discourage speeding on this road. But the death of this little girl

:09:57. > :09:58.has made campaign is more determined to get a permanent lower speed limit

:09:59. > :10:01.in their town. A 26-year-old man has been charged

:10:02. > :10:04.with the murder of a 52-year-old man John Smith died

:10:05. > :10:07.following a disturbance Today Allan Robertson appeared

:10:08. > :10:11.at Kilmarnock Sheriff court He made no plea or declaration

:10:12. > :10:28.and was remanded in custody. Police say they are looking for

:10:29. > :10:29.Craig Munro whose picture they issued last week.

:10:30. > :10:32.A plan is in place for the Scottish Government to take over

:10:33. > :10:35.the running of the country's railways, if Scotrail fails to meet

:10:36. > :10:39.More than 19,000 people have signed a petition calling on the Transport

:10:40. > :10:41.Minister Humza Yousaf to strip the Dutch firm Abellio

:10:42. > :10:43.of the Scotrail contract if they fail to improve.

:10:44. > :10:46.Mr Yousaf told MSPs that contingency plans were ready for ministers

:10:47. > :10:53.BBC Scotland has learned VisitScotland has suspended the five

:10:54. > :10:56.star rating of an Aberdeen hotel at the centre of a row

:10:57. > :11:02.The tourism agency has removed the Marcliffe Hotel

:11:03. > :11:06.from its website and suspended it from its quality assurance scheme.

:11:07. > :11:09.On Friday, the hotel's owner Stewart Spence,

:11:10. > :11:11.apologised after using derogatory terms about homosexuals

:11:12. > :11:24.Police in Suffolk have again been searching the countryside

:11:25. > :11:27.near Bury St Edmonds for an RAF servicemen who went missing

:11:28. > :11:34.Corrie McKeague, who's from Dunfermline disappeared.

:11:35. > :11:36.RAF serviceman Corrie McKeague has been missing for over a month.

:11:37. > :11:39.The 23-year-old from Dunfermline was last seen near his base

:11:40. > :11:41.in Bury St Edmonds, and despite widespread coverage

:11:42. > :11:43.of CCTV showing the 23-year-old after a night out, his

:11:44. > :11:46.Now his mother Nicola, who has campaigned relentlessly

:11:47. > :11:49.for information, says she believes he was taken in a vehicle.

:11:50. > :11:50.From Suffolk, Katherine Nash reports.

:11:51. > :11:55.Searches today at great live Amir. The latest in the hunt for missing

:11:56. > :11:59.service man Corrie McKeague. This week, a possible breakthrough. A

:12:00. > :12:05.sighting of him on the Hollow Road industrial estate behind the sugar

:12:06. > :12:10.beet factory. But for his mother and brother, hope in finding him have

:12:11. > :12:18.faded fast. Our thoughts have changed initially, from as the

:12:19. > :12:22.police thought, it is very hard to think of anything that has happened

:12:23. > :12:26.other than he has gone into a vehicle. Somebody drunk at three

:12:27. > :12:32.o'clock in the morning is not going to be able to walk without being

:12:33. > :12:37.seen. Earlier this week, a man came forward to say he had possibly seen

:12:38. > :12:44.Corrie behind the sugar beet factory. Do you think that could be

:12:45. > :12:52.Corrie? I don't think it could be him. I cannot thank this gentleman

:12:53. > :13:00.enough for coming forward. We cannot... We have checked CCTV from

:13:01. > :13:05.where this gentleman has seen Corrie. You are a police officer but

:13:06. > :13:11.you are also a mother. From the heart, what would you say to people

:13:12. > :13:14.who were in the area at the time? I am a police officer but I am

:13:15. > :13:19.definitely a mother first without a shadow of a doubt. If Somerby has

:13:20. > :13:23.tried to help Corrie, if they have given him a lift to try and help him

:13:24. > :13:25.get a lift up the road but they have taken him to the wrong place, and

:13:26. > :13:41.then they have dropped him off, and now they feel

:13:42. > :13:44.guilty, they did something nice to begin with so please carry on. Let

:13:45. > :13:46.us know where you have dropped him off. Something untoward has happened

:13:47. > :13:50.to him which is why he has not been able to come home. If it is somebody

:13:51. > :13:52.who has taken him, I do know why you have taken him. You clearly don't

:13:53. > :13:55.want anything because this is not a kidnapped. Nobody has come forward

:13:56. > :14:00.and asking for anything of any description so why would somebody

:14:01. > :14:07.have taken him? Tell us where he is. You came down from Scotland to

:14:08. > :14:13.suffer a month ago, how long will you stay here? We were coming back

:14:14. > :14:17.from London the other day on the train and my other son said I cannot

:14:18. > :14:21.wait to get home and he meant Berry. It is really difficult to say when

:14:22. > :14:28.we will go home. We know we need to for our own sanity because we will

:14:29. > :14:32.feel like we are giving up on Corrie. If we stay too long and then

:14:33. > :14:36.decide to go home, but they are making it so easy for us to cope

:14:37. > :14:41.down here that it makes it really difficult to go home. Over the past

:14:42. > :14:46.four weeks, police, the RAF and volunteers from Suffolk rescue have

:14:47. > :14:51.been out in force. Their main focus is the area around Bury St Edmunds

:14:52. > :14:57.and RAF Honington where Corrie was based. More than 5000 man-hours have

:14:58. > :15:02.disappeared so far without a trace disappeared so far without a trace

:15:03. > :15:07.-- looking for the air man. Catherine Ashton joins us from

:15:08. > :15:15.Suffolk police headquarters. As we have heard, CCTV has led to a lot of

:15:16. > :15:24.publicity but no clues. Where does this report go now?

:15:25. > :15:31.INAUDIBLE Well, apologies, we are having some

:15:32. > :15:34.technical problems. We will try to get things sorted and hear from

:15:35. > :15:56.Katherine Nash later in the programme.

:15:57. > :16:03.Politics in Scotland has become quite divided. I want the public to

:16:04. > :16:07.re-engage with Parliament. Then we can be confident we can carry out

:16:08. > :16:08.the duties on behalf of the people of Scotland.

:16:09. > :16:09.You're watching BBC Reporting Scotland.

:16:10. > :16:14.The First Minister has been urging Scottish business leaders to back

:16:15. > :16:16.what she calls her search for a "flexible" exit to Brexit.

:16:17. > :16:19.How an Aberdeen school encourages girls to take up

:16:20. > :16:32.The future of the Rangers' midfielder Joey Barton should

:16:33. > :16:35.The former Manchester City and Burnley player is to hold talks

:16:36. > :16:38.with the club after he was suspended for a training ground

:16:39. > :16:43.Here's our Senior Football Reporter Chris McLaughlin.

:16:44. > :16:50.Well, Rangers have a league match here at Ibrox this evening. Joey

:16:51. > :16:55.Barton will play no part he hasn't featured for Rangers since the 5-1

:16:56. > :17:01.defeat to Celtic last month. That was over five weeks ago. Why is this

:17:02. > :17:05.problem dragging on? It is understood that Rangers are trying

:17:06. > :17:10.to build a case to say he is in breach of contract. We understand

:17:11. > :17:14.Barton will fight any notion of that. Tomorrow's meeting of the

:17:15. > :17:20.first time that both parties have sat down to discuss this problem.

:17:21. > :17:26.Now, if Rangers failed to sack him, they may well have to pay up the

:17:27. > :17:30.remainder of his contract, around ?2 million will be a resolution

:17:31. > :17:34.tomorrow? Maybe. We are told this could be the first of many meetings.

:17:35. > :17:38.It is safe to say no matter what happens tomorrow or in the future,

:17:39. > :17:41.Joey Barton's rear at Rangers is already over.

:17:42. > :17:44.The death of a man in Aberdeen early this morning is

:17:45. > :17:47.Police say they're following a positive line of enquiry

:17:48. > :17:49.after the body of a 26-year-old was found by officers

:17:50. > :17:52.called to a property in Mastrick at around 5am.

:17:53. > :17:55.The man, who has yet to be named, was pronounced dead at the scene.

:17:56. > :17:58.More than 30 police and rescue experts have joined an extended

:17:59. > :18:00.search for a missing French student, in Edinburgh.

:18:01. > :18:02.Divers have been scouring Duddingston Loch for signs

:18:03. > :18:04.of 21-year-old Antoine Maury who was last seen on Monday night.

:18:05. > :18:07.A new possible sighting of him running between the Loch and

:18:08. > :18:19.The public is being urged to check gardens, outhouses and garages.

:18:20. > :18:26.As he lost his footing, across from the loch, there is water and it was

:18:27. > :18:31.freezing cold on Monday night. It would be treacherous if anyone fell

:18:32. > :18:34.in that forms the basis of our main concerns.

:18:35. > :18:36.A look at other stories from across the country...

:18:37. > :18:39.Police have named the three-week-old baby who died at a house in Fife

:18:40. > :18:40.at the weekend as Violet-Ivy Turnbull.

:18:41. > :18:43.Emergency services were called to a home in Cupar, early on Saturday.

:19:41. > :19:46.The former artistic director of the Arches in Glasgow is to take

:19:47. > :19:49.over at the National Theatre of Scotland.

:19:50. > :19:52.Edinburgh born Jackie Wylie will start her new job next spring.

:19:53. > :19:55.The current director Laurie Sansom, announced his departure

:19:56. > :20:13.What I have been doing was working to spread the tendrils of theatre as

:20:14. > :20:18.widely as possible in order to reach as wide a spectrum of the population

:20:19. > :20:23.in the broadest sense of audiences as can be achieved by theatre. It is

:20:24. > :20:25.a continuation of that spirit of innovation.

:20:26. > :20:27.Experts who repaired the Forth Road Bridge have won

:20:28. > :20:29.the coveted Saltire Society award for civil engineering.

:20:30. > :20:32.Scotland's longest bridge was closed to all traffic in December last

:21:04. > :21:10.Some of you may recall our school days when the boys headed off

:21:11. > :21:12.to metal-work or technical drawing and for the girls -

:21:13. > :21:17.As you know there's been a concerted campaign to get more

:21:18. > :21:19.girls into engineering, and today nearly 100 interested

:21:20. > :21:22.female pupils were brought together by Aberdeen University.

:21:23. > :21:39.This is the car I was talking about. A world away from the cliche of boys

:21:40. > :21:43.and toys, today is about the girls and encouraging more of them to

:21:44. > :21:54.build and create their way into the career of engineering. I don't think

:21:55. > :22:02.people give women the opportunity to have a career in engineering. I

:22:03. > :22:06.think it is down to stereotypes. Hopefully that is changing and

:22:07. > :22:10.events like this are doing their job is to encourage us to be engineers.

:22:11. > :22:14.I think it started off as a male dominated field. A lot of people

:22:15. > :22:20.would have been discouraged from doing it. It is following the trend.

:22:21. > :22:27.More female role models would help. There were plenty on hand. As a

:22:28. > :22:30.female engineer, I feel we can actually give ourselves more

:22:31. > :22:36.opportunities and that is why this event brings them to try and see

:22:37. > :22:41.that they actually have skills for this profession. This is what we are

:22:42. > :22:44.doing, trying to challenge this misconception. The proportion of

:22:45. > :22:50.women studying engineering has remained virtually static since 2012

:22:51. > :22:56.at 16%. Only 9% of the UK engineering workforce is female.

:22:57. > :23:00.That is so the car is not too bumpy. There are signs of a more level

:23:01. > :23:05.playing field. I would say it is a wee bit daunting. Some might think

:23:06. > :23:10.it is a male -based industry. I would say don't let it put you off.

:23:11. > :23:14.Things are changing. More women are going into engineering, which is a

:23:15. > :23:19.positive thing. We need more. These girls can be part of that future.

:23:20. > :23:22.Challenges have been met and fun has been had, important ingredients were

:23:23. > :23:28.getting more girls into engineering. Now here's Graham Stewart

:23:29. > :23:35.with details of Scotland 2016. Student debt has doubled undersupply

:23:36. > :23:38.of university places is failing to keep up with demand. Hours of

:23:39. > :23:47.Scottish Government is going to improve the prospect of young people

:23:48. > :23:48.from poor background? -- how is the Scottish Government going to

:23:49. > :24:03.improve? And improving day. After a damp

:24:04. > :24:07.morning, things did improve. You can see on the satellite radar picture,

:24:08. > :24:13.this weather front edging southwards. A few spots rain. Some

:24:14. > :24:19.sunshine coming through the cloud will stop the cloud reforming

:24:20. > :24:23.tonight. Fairly breezy and fairly mild. The exception will be the

:24:24. > :24:29.north-east across Aberdeenshire. We will see temperatures fall away to

:24:30. > :24:36.two, three Celsius in the countryside. Still breezy around the

:24:37. > :24:43.West Coast, the far north and the Northern Isles. And tomorrow, we

:24:44. > :24:46.will have a similar setup. We are a good way away from the setup in the

:24:47. > :24:51.English Channel and the weather front will get the chance to affect

:24:52. > :24:57.us with the outbreaks of rain. The packed ice above mean there is a

:24:58. > :25:02.breeze on offer. On Thursday, a few spots of rain which will dry up.

:25:03. > :25:08.Most of the activity in the north-west with persistent rain

:25:09. > :25:12.through the and Islands. By mid afternoon, in the central belt and

:25:13. > :25:19.south, it will be fairly cloudy. Some sunshine coming through,

:25:20. > :25:24.certainly towards five, in towards Aberdeenshire. Further west, cloudy

:25:25. > :25:29.and damp. Brightening up later on once the heavy showers have cleared

:25:30. > :25:33.through. It will be windy with gale force gusts at times. The wind will

:25:34. > :25:38.edge its way southwards and we will see a spell of it overnight. On

:25:39. > :25:43.Friday it is gone. Lighter winds to come. Generally dry and cloudy was

:25:44. > :25:49.some brighter moments at times and a few spots of light rain. In the

:25:50. > :25:56.weekend we have high pressure across the near continent and low pressure

:25:57. > :25:59.in the Atlantic. A bit of a battle. Foremost, on Saturday and Sunday,

:26:00. > :26:06.largely dry and fairly cloudy. Perhaps a few showers in the west on

:26:07. > :26:11.Saturday. Temperatures around 12, 13 Celsius. As we head through towards

:26:12. > :26:15.Sunday, more of the same for many. Perhaps the of a weather front

:26:16. > :26:21.edging in, bringing outbreaks of rain in the north and north-west.

:26:22. > :26:23.For the weekend, generally dry and cloudy.

:26:24. > :26:30.Now, a reminder of tonight's main news...

:26:31. > :26:34.The First Minister has urged business leaders to back her in her

:26:35. > :26:43.decision to stay in the European Union. French officials in charge of

:26:44. > :26:46.clearing the so-called Jungle migrant camp in Calais say they have

:26:47. > :26:49.accomplish their mission. Aid workers have raised concerns over

:26:50. > :26:55.the plight of the number of children who have yet to be accommodated.

:26:56. > :26:58.Just over a month after an RAF servicemen went missing, her mother

:26:59. > :27:01.says she believes others may be involved in his disappearance.

:27:02. > :27:06.I'll be back with the late bulletin just after the ten o'clock news.

:27:07. > :27:11.And after some sort of baking competition that is on tonight.

:27:12. > :27:13.Until then, from everyone on the team - right
