:01:27. > :01:30.and fire and dreams in the street. We thought, oh my goodness, what

:01:31. > :01:34.happened -- fire engines. We thought maybe something had happened in the

:01:35. > :01:39.woods. But my husband went to walk the dog and he found out that I have

:01:40. > :01:43.had been on fire. We thought, oh, my goodness, New Year's Day, poor

:01:44. > :01:47.family. Whatever has happened. At that point we didn't realise there

:01:48. > :01:50.had been a fatality. Investigators have not given any details into

:01:51. > :02:00.precisely how the fire was started. They are still working at the scene,

:02:41. > :02:42.of Cairngorm mountain in sub-zero temperatures, and only survived

:02:43. > :02:50.thanks to the emergency shelter they'd brought with them.

:02:51. > :02:52.They were found today after a full-scale search involving

:02:53. > :02:58.police, mountain rescue teams and a coastguard helicopter.

:02:59. > :03:07.Rescuers say they were lucky to survive. It was -6 up there. The

:03:08. > :03:11.wind last night would have been 20-20 miles per hour. Not strong

:03:12. > :03:15.enough by any means, but enough to add a bit of Winchell. They were

:03:16. > :03:18.very, very cold. Certainly if we hadn't brought them, they would not

:03:19. > :03:20.have survived another night. A 16-year-old boy has appeared

:03:21. > :03:23.in court charged with the murder of a former semi-professional

:03:24. > :03:25.footballer in Leith An 18-year-old man,

:03:26. > :03:28.Mohammed Zakariyah, has also been The man who died has been

:03:29. > :03:32.named on social media as 30-year-old Shaun Woodburn,

:03:33. > :03:34.who used to play for The club described him as a top

:03:35. > :03:40.player who was well-respected. He died in Edinburgh's Royal

:03:41. > :03:42.Infirmary after a disturbance in the city's Great Junction Street

:03:43. > :03:48.early yesterday morning. A man has died near Girvan in South

:03:49. > :03:52.Ayrshire after being hit by a car. It happened on the A77,

:03:53. > :03:54.north of the town, just The 38-year-old man

:03:55. > :03:58.died at the scene. A BBC Scotland investigation has

:03:59. > :04:07.found Scotland's publicly-funded elite athletes are drawn

:04:08. > :04:09.overwhelmingly from middle The research looked at where

:04:10. > :04:14.athletes went to school. Where data could be found,

:04:15. > :04:17.it shows that almost nine out of ten of the group either went

:04:18. > :04:38.to a fee-paying school or a state Our elite athletes have been winning

:04:39. > :04:43.more medals than ever before. It is a golden start for Great Britain!

:04:44. > :04:49.Over 500 receives support from sport Scotland, but who are they? There

:04:50. > :04:50.has long been a suspicion that those on these programmes are

:04:51. > :04:54.disproportionately from better off on these programmes are

:04:55. > :04:58.backgrounds. But we asked sport Scotland for a demographic breakdown

:04:59. > :05:05.of the elite performance athletes. And they said they didn't have one.

:05:06. > :05:09.So we set out to find out. That meant doing some maths. We used

:05:10. > :05:14.publicly available information to work out where they went to school.

:05:15. > :05:18.We found data for over 70% of the over 500 able-bodied athletes that

:05:19. > :05:24.we fund. We decided to look at what kind of school it was. Was it a

:05:25. > :05:28.private school? And if it was a state school, was it one that served

:05:29. > :05:33.better of children? We used free school meals entitlement to measure

:05:34. > :05:40.that. Over 20% when the fee-paying schools. And almost 70% one of the

:05:41. > :05:44.best of 20% of state schools. Those two groups represented almost 90% of

:05:45. > :05:48.the performance athletes. It looks like elite sport is for elites when

:05:49. > :05:55.it comes to wealth as well as talent. I think anything that comes

:05:56. > :05:58.from public servers should have generally wide public merit good,

:05:59. > :06:01.and I'm not convinced that elite sport does that, I'm not entirely

:06:02. > :06:05.sure that elite sport is something that is accessible to the public in

:06:06. > :06:09.general is the bike I wanted to know whether sport Scotland believed they

:06:10. > :06:15.were doing enough to fulfil all athletes' potential. We are working

:06:16. > :06:19.to get every sport which goes with a pathway from school, the community,

:06:20. > :06:23.the performance, if they have the talent and they want to go the. We

:06:24. > :06:27.are winning more than ever. Whether that means we are providing equal

:06:28. > :06:30.opportunities to everyone who might be able to win is less clear.

:06:31. > :06:32.And you can see more of John Beattie's investigation

:06:38. > :06:40.An annual rail fares increase has come into force today.

:06:41. > :06:43.Scottish Labour had called for a freeze, as Scotrail has faced

:06:44. > :06:47.strong criticism for late and cancelled trains.

:06:48. > :06:51.But the Scottish Government says a free week of rail travel that it's

:06:52. > :06:54.funding will save some passengers more money.

:06:55. > :06:58.Labour argues that a freeze would benefit every single traveller.

:06:59. > :07:01.ScotRail will set a specific period this year when the free

:07:02. > :07:06.Scotland's Gary Anderson plays in the PDC World Darts

:07:07. > :07:11.The defending champion beat fellow Scot Peter Wright in last night's

:07:12. > :07:17.If he beats the Dutchman Michael Van Gerwen tonight,

:07:18. > :07:21.it'll be his third world title in a row.

:07:22. > :07:24.A whisky distillery is investing nearly ?600,000 in community
