:00:00. > :00:09.The Labour group on Aberdeen council is suspended from the party

:00:10. > :00:10.after forming a coalition with the Conservatives against

:00:11. > :00:22.This isn't about positions, this is about the job Labour councillors are

:00:23. > :00:24.elected to do protect public service, to invest and defend public

:00:25. > :00:27.We'll be live in Aberdeen with the latest.

:00:28. > :00:31.As unemployment falls again in Scotland, we take a look at how

:00:32. > :00:35.the so-called gig economy is changing the world of work.

:00:36. > :00:37.The frightening moment a schoolgirl's tongue got trapped

:00:38. > :00:43.It took hospital staff more than four hours to free her.

:00:44. > :00:45.Why this multiple sclerosis sufferer is rethinking his plans

:00:46. > :00:53.And, after another early defeat for Andy Murray,

:00:54. > :00:55.can the world number one recover his form

:00:56. > :01:21.Scottish Labour has suspended all nine members of the Labour group

:01:22. > :01:23.of councillors in Aberdeen for breaching party rules

:01:24. > :01:26.and forming a coalition to run the City Council with the Tories.

:01:27. > :01:28.Fiona Stalker's there for us this evening.

:01:29. > :01:32.Fiona, talk us through what's been going on there today.

:01:33. > :01:40.Well, they say a week is a long time in politics, how about a few hours?

:01:41. > :01:45.It has been a day of deal, resignation, and suspensions but a

:01:46. > :01:50.coalition of, are now running Aberdeen but not even is happy.

:01:51. > :01:55.Labour's 5.00 deadline came and went. Kezia Dugdale demanding the

:01:56. > :02:00.nine Labour councillors remove themselves from a coalition with the

:02:01. > :02:04.Tories are. They refused. Your reaction your suspension? I am

:02:05. > :02:07.disappointed because I have been a member of the Labour Party for a

:02:08. > :02:11.long time or group took the decision we wanted to go into coalition

:02:12. > :02:16.because we feel it is best thing for the people of Aberdeen, we feel that

:02:17. > :02:20.we have negotiated a good deal with our partners which means that we

:02:21. > :02:24.have anti-austerity means within the programme that will be brought

:02:25. > :02:30.forward. The controversial development seen by many as the

:02:31. > :02:34.reason Labour got a thumping at the local elections but tonight they are

:02:35. > :02:41.back in power. The deal don with the Tories. A Labour Lord Provost was

:02:42. > :02:47.elected, nominated by Conservatives. The SNP, the biggest party left in

:02:48. > :02:53.opposition What have seen is a dark day for democracy s they are the

:02:54. > :02:57.three headed hound of hell. It it was a day of comes and goings, the

:02:58. > :03:02.Tories giving up council leader hip to Labour, despite being the bigger

:03:03. > :03:07.party. Has democracy I been done today? It is not the party with the

:03:08. > :03:10.most councillor that formed the coalition, but the group is coming

:03:11. > :03:14.together to have a storm partnership, so with 23 members I

:03:15. > :03:17.think it is fantastic for the city. Amid the turmoil the Liberal

:03:18. > :03:22.Democrats lost a councillor when one of theirs crossed the chamber to

:03:23. > :03:26.join the independents. I think there will be anger among a large

:03:27. > :03:33.proportion of the population in Aberdeen. They will be angry there

:03:34. > :03:37.is no change. I am shocked at the behaviour of the Conservative Party

:03:38. > :03:42.and Labour. One member of the public has made their feelings known about

:03:43. > :03:47.the new coalition. What happens next? The nine councillors have been

:03:48. > :03:49.suspended from Scottish Labour pending an investigation, they are

:03:50. > :03:53.calling themselves Aberdeen Labour and they say they will continue to

:03:54. > :03:55.campaign alongside the Scottish Labour colleague, for the up coming

:03:56. > :03:57.Labour colleague, for the up coming general election.

:03:58. > :04:01.Well, in the last half an hour, Scottish Labour Leader Kezia Dugdale

:04:02. > :04:11.This isn't about position or golds round the necks of councillor, this

:04:12. > :04:14.is about the job they are elected to do to protect public service and

:04:15. > :04:17.defend thenment the deal coming from Aberdeen didn't pass that test, that

:04:18. > :04:20.is why it was rejected by the democratic body of the Labour Party,

:04:21. > :04:21.why that must be respected and why we have moved to suspend the

:04:22. > :04:24.we have moved to suspend the councillors.

:04:25. > :04:27.And with me now is our political editor Brian Taylor -

:04:28. > :04:29.Brian, how damaging is this to the Scottish Labour

:04:30. > :04:34.I certainly think the general election is concentrating minds that

:04:35. > :04:39.it is what this row is about. Let us reremember a couple of facts in the

:04:40. > :04:43.previous set of council, both Labour and the SNP in various guises,

:04:44. > :04:46.whether in coalition or partnership with the Conservative, the SNP ruled

:04:47. > :04:52.out a deal with the Tory, Labour ruled out not a deal with the

:04:53. > :04:55.Tories, but any deal they said would increase austerity for communities

:04:56. > :04:59.but to be fair to Labour, in advance of the agreement in Aberdeen, a

:05:00. > :05:02.panel of the Scottish executive committee said they went happy with

:05:03. > :05:06.the deal, they thought it was the wrong thing to do and they said it

:05:07. > :05:10.should not happen, the councillors wept ahead regardless. How does this

:05:11. > :05:14.affect Labour? There will be some voters in Scotland who will discount

:05:15. > :05:18.this, they will pay no attention to it, they will pay no heed, they will

:05:19. > :05:23.vote as they are going to vote regardless. Some will be impressed

:05:24. > :05:27.at dug danger taking what is seemingly a tough stand, frankly

:05:28. > :05:32.against member of her own party, but there another prospective. People

:05:33. > :05:37.tend not to vote for parties that are pay tenially divided. It tends

:05:38. > :05:41.to deter the voters. Earlier Kezia Dugdale was asked on our sister

:05:42. > :05:45.programme on BBC Radio Scotland how she would rank her campaign and

:05:46. > :05:50.Labour's campaign from one o ten, she gave it six or seven with three

:05:51. > :05:51.weeks to go. I am not sure tonight she will be increasing that score

:05:52. > :05:54.all that much. Thank you for that. And speaking of the general

:05:55. > :06:02.election, the Liberal Democrats have published their UK election

:06:03. > :06:04.manifesto and reaffirmed the party's opposition to Scottish independence

:06:05. > :06:06.and a second indy referendum. But it's Brexit that's

:06:07. > :06:09.at the heart of their campaign. Here's our political

:06:10. > :06:22.correspondent, David Porter. Elections, battle buses and

:06:23. > :06:26.manifestos go together. The Liberal Democrats key is Brexit is not cut

:06:27. > :06:31.and dry. Do you have people based in markets to do the face to face...

:06:32. > :06:35.How Brexit pans out will affect everyone, including this start up

:06:36. > :06:39.company in Glasgow. It provides loyalty cards for the small business

:06:40. > :06:43.sector. That deal ultimately will have to be signed off and the

:06:44. > :06:46.question is who should do that? Who should have that choice about

:06:47. > :06:49.whether that deal is good enough? I don't think it should up to the

:06:50. > :06:54.Government or to Parliament, I think it should be the people that have

:06:55. > :06:58.that final say, and the option to remain in the EU if it a bad deal

:06:59. > :07:04.that Theresa May brings back from the negotiations.

:07:05. > :07:09.Out on the stump the SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon. She is keen to

:07:10. > :07:11.frame Brexit debate from the nationalist perspective. The key

:07:12. > :07:17.choice for people is whether we are going to give the Tories a free

:07:18. > :07:22.hand, not just to pursue Brexit but to pursue an extreme form of Brexit.

:07:23. > :07:25.An extreme Brexit could put 80,000 Scottish jobs on the line, my

:07:26. > :07:30.message in this election is if you vote for the SNP, you are giving me

:07:31. > :07:34.a mandate to demand that Scotland's interests around that negotiateling

:07:35. > :07:40.table. Rights answer if you are a Tory, at

:07:41. > :07:45.this nursery in Thornley bank the focus on early years education, but

:07:46. > :07:48.Brexit is never far away. Once you have asked that question, I think

:07:49. > :07:52.our experience in Scotland shows we shouldn't have to be dragged back

:07:53. > :07:55.and reasked us until the side that lost get what they want out of the

:07:56. > :08:00.end of it. We made the decision, we are leaving the European Union, the

:08:01. > :08:03.idea now is who is going to get the best deal, Jeremy Corbyn or Theresa

:08:04. > :08:09.May? I trust Theresa May, to get a much better deal than I would trust

:08:10. > :08:12.Jeremy Corbyn. Labour's leader also clear of the

:08:13. > :08:16.challenges ahead. I think the result of the EU

:08:17. > :08:21.referendum should be respected and even has to work hard to get the

:08:22. > :08:24.best possible deal from Brexit. That involves rejecting the Tories's hard

:08:25. > :08:31.right-wing approach to Brexit, the way do that is to vote for a Labour

:08:32. > :08:36.Government on 8th June. At Holyrood a different tone from the election.

:08:37. > :08:41.A visit from Brendan cox whose wife Jo Cox was murdered last year. I

:08:42. > :08:46.think it is more important during times where we disagree to remember

:08:47. > :08:50.the things that are more fundamental to say of course we can disagree

:08:51. > :08:54.with each other but there is no space for hatred within that debate.

:08:55. > :08:58.The Scottish party leaders took time out from the cut and thrust of the

:08:59. > :09:02.campaign, to sit down together for tea with Brendan cox. All agrees

:09:03. > :09:06.some things are just more important. All agrees some things

:09:07. > :09:08.are just more important. Unemployment in Scotland has fallen

:09:09. > :09:10.by 14,000 in the last But the world of work is changing,

:09:11. > :09:14.with more people now earning money through the so-called "gig economy"

:09:15. > :09:17.- where one-off services - like taxi rides and takeaway meals -

:09:18. > :09:20.are arranged by mobile phones. While some enjoy the freedom

:09:21. > :09:22.of life off the payroll, there's concern about the level

:09:23. > :09:25.of rights and benefits these workers are entitled to,

:09:26. > :09:33.as our political correspondent, And relax. This mass Sergeant

:09:34. > :09:38.therapist is enjoying her new career after being made redundant. Being

:09:39. > :09:41.self-employed, Elizabeth is her own boss. She doesn't receive sick pay

:09:42. > :09:46.or paid holidays but there is a Huang. A of freedom I am in charge

:09:47. > :09:52.of everything. I think if I sat down with somebody, and spoke about the

:09:53. > :09:56.plus points and also the challenges of being self-employed, to being on

:09:57. > :10:00.a payroll we could probably come up we the same amount of items on each

:10:01. > :10:04.list albeit they would be very different. There has been a rise in

:10:05. > :10:09.traditional self employment like this since the recession. But the

:10:10. > :10:14.world of work is changing. At the swipe of a screen, with the new gig

:10:15. > :10:19.economy. Big companies link workers to customers for a one officer

:10:20. > :10:24.advice, and take a cut. It's sold as giving workers more control but the

:10:25. > :10:29.reality for in uber-driver is different. Deisn't set our own fare,

:10:30. > :10:34.we are to in control of our own earnings, we have to do it the

:10:35. > :10:38.uber-way or the high way. But on the high ways of Glasgow, uber-put us in

:10:39. > :10:41.touch with one driver who sees the benefits of working for himself and

:10:42. > :10:44.the company. You press a button you are working, you press a button you

:10:45. > :10:49.stop working, nobody is there telling you what to do. That is the

:10:50. > :10:53.foundation of flexible working as far as I'm concerned. There is

:10:54. > :10:59.currently an independent review into the gig economy. In this election

:11:00. > :11:03.the parties are making various promises round increasing works'

:11:04. > :11:08.right and better pay. Budding Chancellors will want to make sure

:11:09. > :11:13.they don't miss out of tax revenue as self employment increases. If the

:11:14. > :11:17.next UK Government tries to address some of these issues round

:11:18. > :11:23.differences in tax treatment, between the self-employed and

:11:24. > :11:27.employees that has to go alongside changes in the employment rights of

:11:28. > :11:32.people working in the self employment sector. So as office

:11:33. > :11:35.staff enjoy a lunchtime rest in George Square politicians in this

:11:36. > :11:38.general election campaign are working hard, to try to adapt to

:11:39. > :11:41.this changing world of employment. Yesterday, we brought you

:11:42. > :11:45.news of the longest running criminal A husband and wife were convicted

:11:46. > :11:49.of fraud and money laundering, with victims finding out they no

:11:50. > :11:51.longer owned their homes. The court proceedings

:11:52. > :11:52.cost around ?7.5 milion. But the case raises questions

:11:53. > :11:55.about the future of these trials. This trial has been

:11:56. > :12:06.remarkable in many ways - it was originally scheduled

:12:07. > :12:07.to take 4-6 months. It lasted more than

:12:08. > :12:10.a year and a half. In that time, the judge officially

:12:11. > :12:13.retired, but had to be kept on, a juror got married,

:12:14. > :12:15.and a lawyer's baby was born. But can you imagine being called

:12:16. > :12:18.for jury duty and finding, that your normal working life had

:12:19. > :12:20.to be suspended for more Jurors do get paid, but if you're

:12:21. > :12:25.in a higher paid job But this case also raises questions

:12:26. > :12:36.about the legal system itself. The whole trial was on edge when

:12:37. > :12:40.the number of jurors fell to 12 - the minimum number required

:12:41. > :12:41.to reach a verdict. If another juror had

:12:42. > :12:43.been unable to continue, So, are jury trials the best way

:12:44. > :13:05.to achieve justice in long In terms of very very serious case,

:13:06. > :13:08.involving very complicated financial concepts and influents the ordinary

:13:09. > :13:13.person might not be familiar with you might well ask is this value for

:13:14. > :13:18.money and is it good justice, the best way to deliver justice? I am

:13:19. > :13:19.not sure on either test whether with are delivering that in Scotland

:13:20. > :13:21.are delivering that in Scotland today.

:13:22. > :13:24.The Scottish Government is planning to look at the work of juries -

:13:25. > :13:27.it will be at least two years before we find out more.

:13:28. > :13:29.Another question raised by the case is who is prosecuted.

:13:30. > :13:32.Lawyers who carried out the property transactions which turned

:13:33. > :13:34.out to be fraudulent, were not put on trial.

:13:35. > :13:37.Some of the families I spoke to who lost their home in the scam

:13:38. > :13:50.say the professionals involved should be tried too.

:13:51. > :13:56.Every single home report, surveyor should be held account, in my eyes

:13:57. > :14:00.Yet, because they gave evidence for the Crown they effectively have

:14:01. > :14:01.immunity from prosecution in the criminal court

:14:02. > :14:05.The BBC has discovered that two of the lawyers involved have been

:14:06. > :14:07.struck off by their regulator and two have previously

:14:08. > :14:18.been disciplined - all for other matters.

:14:19. > :14:24.Other lawyers take these matters very very seriously, it is a

:14:25. > :14:29.privilege to an extent to be able to handle money, and that being so,

:14:30. > :14:31.there is a zero tolerance of mortgage fraud within the profession

:14:32. > :14:34.The Law Society of Scotland, who regulate lawyers,

:14:35. > :14:37.have said they will wait for papers from court before they decide

:14:38. > :14:39.whether they will look at the actions of the solicitors

:14:40. > :14:42.involved - but what's certain is there are problems with them

:14:43. > :14:45.There is also, separately, an independent review under way

:14:46. > :14:47.into whether lawyers need to be better regulated.

:14:48. > :15:04.So there is plenty to look out for after what is now a historic case.

:15:05. > :15:06.A child's travel mug has been withdrawn from sale across Europe

:15:07. > :15:09.by The Disney Store after a school girl from Kirkintilloch

:15:10. > :15:17.Hospital staff had to use bolt cutters, a hacksaw and drill

:15:18. > :15:20.to remove the screw-top cup from the seven-year-old's mouth.

:15:21. > :15:22.The company said it was an unfortunate incident

:15:23. > :15:24.that they had taken seriously by immediately stopping sales

:15:25. > :15:34.A day out in the park is the best way for a little girl to get over

:15:35. > :15:38.her ordeal. Because this time last week the

:15:39. > :15:43.seven-year-old spent hours in hospital with her tongue stuck

:15:44. > :15:47.firmly in the lid of her drinking bottle They tried various tool,

:15:48. > :15:54.scissor, bolt cut evers, eventually a hack saw. That was what worked the

:15:55. > :15:57.best, they tried to use some local anaesthetic in her tongue which was

:15:58. > :16:01.painful. She was screaming at that point. I had to held her down. The

:16:02. > :16:05.mark on her tongue is healing nicely. Fortunately she doesn't

:16:06. > :16:10.remember much about what happened in hospital, but her injury did make a

:16:11. > :16:23.few things difficult. Talking and eating. I couldn't eat. It turns out

:16:24. > :16:26.what happened to Megan wasn't an isolated incident. Another mother

:16:27. > :16:31.from Midlothian has been in touch with this family, to say that her

:16:32. > :16:34.nine-year-old son's tongue got stuck in a similar travel mug. The main

:16:35. > :16:40.difference is her child didn't end up in hospital. It was a Disney cup

:16:41. > :16:53.like this which caused the problems. In a

:16:54. > :17:00.Three other mugs have also been withdrawn from sale, while there for

:17:01. > :17:05.plans for a full recall, customers can return the mugs for a refund.

:17:06. > :17:09.Komi An Inverness man who planned

:17:10. > :17:13.suicide clinic next month is to defer the visit.

:17:14. > :17:15.Colin Campbell, who's been encouraged to seek support

:17:16. > :17:17.by a fellow sufferer, has called for more help for others

:17:18. > :17:21.NHS Highland says support for MS patients is tailored to suit

:17:22. > :17:23.individual needs and is very much driven by them.

:17:24. > :17:39.how people should be looking at this is Colin is worn out with having had

:17:40. > :17:44.this illness and his death will give him release. Colin Campbell speaking

:17:45. > :17:49.earlier this month about his plan to end his life in Switzerland after

:17:50. > :17:56.being unable to face another winter stuck in a second-floor flat with

:17:57. > :18:02.multiple sclerosis. Isn't as nice? This is better than sitting indoors,

:18:03. > :18:07.isn't it? Now his life has taken a different turn after being contacted

:18:08. > :18:11.by a fellow MS sufferer who is encouraging him to access better

:18:12. > :18:17.support for his progressive illness. I had to fight very hard to get my

:18:18. > :18:22.help and I found lots of barriers. I now have carers, promote abilities

:18:23. > :18:28.Cooter, and a great life now, but a few years ago, my story was very

:18:29. > :18:32.different and I can see Colin the way I used to be. What did you think

:18:33. > :18:39.of that, Colin, going on your scooter for the first time? I think

:18:40. > :18:44.was excellent. I enjoyed it and I agree it's totally liberating. The

:18:45. > :18:48.56 inroad has now decided to defer his visit to the Swiss clinic while

:18:49. > :18:55.he seeks more help and treatment. My situation was extremely bleak. This

:18:56. > :19:00.has given me some kind of optimism which I definitely didn't have, so I

:19:01. > :19:06.owe that to her. There's a lot of people forgotten, who needs a lot of

:19:07. > :19:12.help and are unaware there is help and that's why people like me go to

:19:13. > :19:18.Switzerland. So a new direction and new hope for someone who felt he had

:19:19. > :19:23.nowhere left to turn. You won't ever want to be slower game. It's boring

:19:24. > :19:24.being slow. Jackie O'Brien, Inverness.

:19:25. > :19:28.Andy Murray says he's still in with a chance of winning

:19:29. > :19:30.the French Open tennis despite his recent slump in form.

:19:31. > :19:32.It continued with last night's second round defeat

:19:33. > :19:34.at the Italian Open, his fourth early exit recently.

:19:35. > :19:57.Italy is Fabiola Fellini, sending Andy Murray packing. Getting the

:19:58. > :20:03.crowd going. The world number 29, the latest player to beat the number

:20:04. > :20:07.one. I wasn't creating enough chances on my own. Normally during

:20:08. > :20:12.matches, your opponent might give you a few opportunities with some

:20:13. > :20:17.errors. So you hope to create a few yourself but that certainly wasn't

:20:18. > :20:22.the case today. In Indian Wells, it in March, he was knocked out in the

:20:23. > :20:26.second round. After that, a third round exit at Monte Carlo. Signs of

:24:16. > :24:21.Thank you. Good evening. Fairly pleasant conditions for many of us
