:03:06. > :03:09.should ditch the charade and ditch her new plans

:05:22. > :05:24.is one year old today. The route runs from Edinburgh
:05:25. > :05:26.Waverley, to Tweedbank near Melrose - a line that had
:05:27. > :05:30.been shut for 46 years - and cost more than ?350
:05:31. > :05:35.million to reopen. The service has brough
:05:36. > :05:39.a welcome boost for tourism but has it been a victim
:05:40. > :05:41.of its own success? Perhaps it's no surprise that
:05:42. > :05:48.a route this stunning has surpassed expectations but the scenery can't

:05:52. > :06:05.recently over the past few weeks but hopefully
:06:06. > :06:07.getting those sorted out. Since it has come, I have been

:06:17. > :06:18.but you pay It has got better,
:06:19. > :06:23.to be honest, over time. Campaigners who back the line have
:06:24. > :06:25.been monitoring its progress and say
:06:26. > :06:28.there is a clear need for The downside is the service has
:06:29. > :06:31.been quite unreliable. Problems with cancellations and late
:06:32. > :06:33.running because of inadequate Too much single track,
:06:34. > :06:40.not enough double track. That has been a worry,
:06:41. > :06:47.it doesn't affect visitors but for regular
:06:48. > :06:49.communitiers that's a concern, if it is too unreliable they will go
:06:50. > :06:53.back to using the car or the puss. ScotRail who operate the service
:06:54. > :06:56.admit there have been problems but A railway like the Borders is
:06:57. > :07:00.fantastic, it connects the community We will continually
:07:01. > :07:03.improve it to make sure whatever the issues are,
:07:04. > :07:06.that have come up, are fixed. One of the main reasons
:07:07. > :07:08.for reopening the Borders Railway line was to bring an
:07:09. > :07:20.economic impact to the area and in places like Melrose,
:07:21. > :07:21.businesses are reporting an increase in the number of business sores
:07:22. > :07:24.but questions are being asked about how far that
:07:25. > :07:26.economic impact has spread. In the years ahead
:07:27. > :07:29.we'll see the economic impact flush throughout the Boarders
:07:30. > :07:32.but in the first year already there are significant signs the economic
:07:33. > :07:35.benefit is coming to fruition. One year on, there
:07:36. > :07:37.is now an expectation that the service will improve
:07:38. > :07:42.and the benefits will spread. But, as one passenger
:07:43. > :07:45.put it, at least we now have a railway
:07:46. > :07:49.it complain about. More than 11 years ago,
:07:50. > :07:52.five members of one family from South Uist were killed
:07:53. > :07:55.in one of the worst storms to hit the Western Isles
:07:56. > :07:57.in living memory. A fatal accident inquiry
:07:58. > :07:59.has never been held But relatives say they believe
:08:00. > :08:05.the tragedy may have been caused by the construction
:08:06. > :08:07.of a nearby causeway. From South Uist,
:08:08. > :08:10.Ian Hamilton reports. This has been a desperate search,
:08:11. > :08:14.a community struggling to find their Locals used anything
:08:15. > :08:24.they could to find their youngsters, garden rakes,
:08:25. > :08:29.old walking sticks. Father MacDonald recalls a tragedy
:08:30. > :08:32.that hit his parish community in South Uist
:08:33. > :08:38.in 2005, that claimed five lives. I believe around about 7.00,
:08:39. > :08:45.which was high tide, the waves were crashing
:08:46. > :08:47.over the top of the And that was what prompted
:08:48. > :08:51.the family to leave. On that night, the family came along
:08:52. > :08:53.this road They were put here two
:08:54. > :08:59.years after the accident. This was just an open piece of road
:09:00. > :09:03.built along the sandbank. The cars were swept
:09:04. > :09:05.away here but it's believed that the source of
:09:06. > :09:10.the problem was further up the road. The causeway is two miles further
:09:11. > :09:13.down the road there, with
:09:14. > :09:15.the growing waves, sea levels, the wind
:09:16. > :09:18.was The causeway was
:09:19. > :09:24.acting as a dam, the water had to go somewhere,
:09:25. > :09:30.so it burst overland. Locals believe that the accident
:09:31. > :09:32.could have been avoided. A family member told us
:09:33. > :09:34.that the original plan for the causeway linking the mainland
:09:35. > :09:38.and island had gaps but the final We would like to see
:09:39. > :09:47.a fatal accident inquiry. We did a freedom of information
:09:48. > :09:49.request to the local authority for all documents relating
:09:50. > :09:53.to the construction of the causeway. As soon as we started
:09:54. > :09:59.going through it, it was evident there was
:10:00. > :10:01.a lot of papers missing. Well, if you ask for something
:10:02. > :10:13.and they don't provide it, it gives the impression
:10:14. > :10:19.they are trying to hide something. Maybe you think they are liable
:10:20. > :10:26.or somebody is liable for making that decision
:10:27. > :10:29.to cut from three to one. We want to find out,
:10:30. > :10:36.but we are facing a brick wall. We invited the council to respond
:10:37. > :10:38.to the concerns and suspicions regarding the freedom
:10:39. > :10:41.of information request. A council spokesperson told us that
:10:42. > :10:43.all the information 11 years on, residents

:10:56. > :10:57.available for a feasibility In July, ?25,000 was made
:10:58. > :11:01.available for a feasibility study to improve the causeway
:11:02. > :11:04.and the Crown Office told us that a fatal accident inquiry

:12:35. > :12:40.Islands and hot temperatures for the time of year, potential highs of 25
:12:41. > :12:48.Celsius. Back on home turf, we are looking at everyone tempered at the
:12:49. > :12:52.time of year. More widely into the low 20s tomorrow. Almost like a warm
