:00:14. > :00:15.nearly 18 years ago has already stood trial
:00:16. > :00:19.The details emerged today during the cross-examination
:00:20. > :00:24.48 year old Ronnie Coulter denies murdering Surjit Singh Chhokar
:00:25. > :00:26.in Overtown near Wishaw in November 1998.
:00:27. > :00:31.From the High Court in Glasgow here's our Home Affairs
:00:32. > :01:00.For the third day, Elizabeth Bryce has been in the witness box
:01:01. > :01:04.recording the event of November the 4th 1998. She was the partner of the
:01:05. > :01:07.Indian waiter Surjit Singh Chhokar, who was stabbed to death outside her
:01:08. > :01:10.house in Overtown. His family were watching with the jury was told the
:01:11. > :01:13.man in the book has already been tried for the crime. In fact it's
:01:14. > :01:18.the third time Elizabeth Bryce has given evidence in a High Court
:01:19. > :01:21.trial. In March 1999, Ronnie Coulter was tried and acquitted. Now Ronnie
:01:22. > :01:24.Coulter is back in court accused of the murder of Mr Chhokar for a
:01:25. > :01:28.second time and stop Elizabeth Bryce was questioned by the defence QC.
:01:29. > :01:32.She said on the night her partner, who she called Chhokar, died, she
:01:33. > :01:35.found him out of the flat, bleeding heavily from a chest wound. She then
:01:36. > :01:40.told police that three men had been involved but only named Andrew
:01:41. > :01:47.Coulter. PC David Rattray was first on the scene. He said he had taken a
:01:48. > :01:50.statement from Mr Bryce in the ambulance taking Mr Chhokar grasped.
:01:51. > :01:56.Constable Rattray said Elizabeth Bryce at only given him the name of
:01:57. > :02:00.Andrew Calder and if she had told the names of the other two men, she
:02:01. > :02:02.would have passed on. The trial of Ronnie Coulter here in Glasgow
:02:03. > :02:06.resumes on Monday. A grieving family is calling
:02:07. > :02:08.for improvements to mortuaries around the country, after branding
:02:09. > :02:10.conditions at their local one The widow and daughters of a man
:02:11. > :02:15.who died in a sailing accident were called to identify his body,
:02:16. > :02:18.but they say they were shocked at facilities at the mortuary,
:02:19. > :02:35.which didn't even include a toilet These are the waters of the Murray
:02:36. > :02:39.coast which claimed the life of keen sailor Frank White in May. The
:02:40. > :02:49.69-year-old had set off on his boat to spectate on a race series run by
:02:50. > :02:50.the local club when his boat was overturned. Tragic enough for his
:02:51. > :02:53.family but when they were asked to come and formally identify his body,
:02:54. > :03:01.at the mortuary in Elgin, this is what greeted them. What used to
:03:02. > :03:08.promote like a disused, unkempt outbuilding, and two steps outside,
:03:09. > :03:14.we were by his body, with very little progression. Just kind of,
:03:15. > :03:16.are you ready? We think all going to move forward with this, and
:03:17. > :03:21.actually, you're there, with your loved one right in front of you. In
:03:22. > :03:26.a statement, NHS Grampian said they had immediately apologised to Mr
:03:27. > :03:28.White's family and took steps to ensure that what they had
:03:29. > :03:33.experienced didn't happen again. They are no longer using this
:03:34. > :03:36.mortuary for family visits. But the family and their MSP are concerned
:03:37. > :03:45.that there may be other mortuaries in Scotland that provide a similarly
:03:46. > :03:48.dismal book for grieving families. I think the family who have been
:03:49. > :03:53.through the river kicks principally to identify the body of a loved one
:03:54. > :03:58.in mortuary facilities that are wholly inappropriate, below
:03:59. > :04:02.standards, they want to not have any other family in Scotland go through
:04:03. > :04:05.that and I agree now is the time to ensure standards of other mortuaries
:04:06. > :04:11.that and I agree now is the time to in Scotland I checked. The MSP is to
:04:12. > :04:16.the issue in Hollywood, can mortuaries to be checked to sure
:04:17. > :04:20.they reach acceptable standards. It felt so wrong, and nobody should
:04:21. > :04:30.have that lack of dignity and respect, either for the living of
:04:31. > :04:31.the deceased. And if the position was that there, what was it like
:04:32. > :04:34.across the rest of Scotland? The Princess Royal has
:04:35. > :04:36.cancelled her public engagements next week because she is "feeling
:04:37. > :04:39.unwell", Buckingham Palace has said. Princess Anne, who's 66,
:04:40. > :04:41.is understood to have had tests at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary
:04:42. > :04:43.on Wednesday. Buckingham Palace said the Queen's
:04:44. > :04:46.daughter had been suffering from a bad chest infection and had
:04:47. > :04:48.cancelled her engagements She's been staying at Balmoral,
:04:49. > :04:57.the Queen's Aberdeenshire residence. Tens of thousands of people
:04:58. > :05:00.across Scotland are waiting to rent a house from a council
:05:01. > :05:02.or a housing association. Some are in temporary

:05:25. > :05:29.homeless. Her marriage broke up and later a serious medical condition
:05:30. > :05:32.stopped her from working. She is living in a flat until a more
:05:33. > :05:38.suitable place to rent becomes available. The bottom line was I had
:05:39. > :05:44.to sell my house, and when you have to do that, you have to do that, you
:05:45. > :05:51.realise, I can't go and find another job. I'm not well enough to be doing
:05:52. > :05:57.Y, Z. Living on the ninth floor can be a serious problem for someone who
:05:58. > :06:02.uses a wheelchair. While temporary accommodation of any sort is far
:06:03. > :06:07.from ideal. All other positions have been in storage for a year and a
:06:08. > :06:12.half now. Just now what I'm sitting with is second-hand goods. Stories
:06:13. > :06:17.like Linda's may challenge misconceptions about who might
:06:18. > :06:21.become homeless. Across Scotland 30,000 households became homeless
:06:22. > :06:25.last year. Sleeping rough is just the tip of the iceberg. The vast
:06:26. > :06:30.majority of homeless people do have a roof over their head. In Aberdeen
:06:31. > :06:39.almost 5000 households are in temporary accommodation. Who becomes
:06:40. > :06:42.homeless? Because of them to anybody, that's the resounding
:06:43. > :06:46.message I want to get across, because we work with a wide
:06:47. > :06:51.diversity of people. One person this charity is working with is Carol
:06:52. > :06:55.Ann. Soon she hopes to have a permanent home. Another charity is
:06:56. > :07:00.giving her accommodation and teaching the new skills, something
:07:01. > :07:06.that can help self-esteem. I'd like to have my own home but the row they

:08:00. > :08:05.Let's get the weekend weather outlook.
:08:06. > :08:13.What a miserable end to the day it was but the cat that sunset! You
:08:14. > :08:19.know what they say about red sky at night. Tomorrow, the improved edge.
:08:20. > :08:24.A few light showers, well broken cloud and some decent spells of
