:00:00. > :00:00.Newsnight. Join me now on BBC Two, 11.00pm in Scotland. That is

:00:00. > :00:00.Newsnight with Kirstie. Here on BBC One, it's time for

:00:07. > :00:10.A stabbing at an Aberdeen school which led to the death

:00:11. > :00:13.of a pupil was "potentially predictable and avoidable".

:00:14. > :00:18.A report into the tragedy at Cults academy revealed it was known that

:00:19. > :00:20.16-year-old Bailey Gwynne's attacker was carrying a knife -

:00:21. > :00:33.October 28 last year, a day that will not be

:00:34. > :00:37.forgotten by those involved, as the lunch break ends at Cults

:00:38. > :00:39.Academy, two boys of 16 have an argument and then fight.

:00:40. > :00:45.16-year-old Bailey Gwynne, a single stab wound to the heart

:00:46. > :00:52.His killer now serving nine years for culpable homicide.

:00:53. > :01:01.Today the findings of an independent report into what happened,

:01:02. > :01:03.a picture is painted of an unexceptional argument that

:01:04. > :01:10.Entirely, in my view, unpredictable, rose very rapidly

:01:11. > :01:13.from an inconsequential argument that schoolboys might have every

:01:14. > :01:20.day, a regular argument which suddenly became inflamed.

:01:21. > :01:23.On events on the day of the stabbing Andrew Lowe says it was an unplanned

:01:24. > :01:25.spontaneous conflict that emerged rapidly.

:01:26. > :01:29.It could not have been predicted or averted on the day.

:01:30. > :01:32.But he says the course of the conflict was fatally altered

:01:33. > :01:39.This was potentially predictable and avoidable if those

:01:40. > :01:42.who knew Child A, the killer, carried weapons to school,

:01:43. > :01:52.The possession of a weapon by one boy was known by some people

:01:53. > :01:54.and if they had brought it to the attention of teachers,

:01:55. > :01:59.that may have enabled the event to be avoided.

:02:00. > :02:02.All of my recommendations are around making sure that in future

:02:03. > :02:05.we have a better chance of avoiding that.

:02:06. > :02:08.There are 21 recommendations in the report.

:02:09. > :02:13.Aberdeen City Council accepts them all.

:02:14. > :02:22.I am very, very thoughtful about the impact on the well-being

:02:23. > :02:28.of all children at Cults as a result of what happened, that

:02:29. > :02:32.has been my focus for the last year, incumbent upon us all to be mindful

:02:33. > :02:35.and to provide the support, this will prove to be a significant

:02:36. > :02:37.dramatic event in the life of a number of those children.

:02:38. > :02:39.Bailey Gwynne's family met with the author

:02:40. > :02:53.He said they showed remarkable dignity.

:02:54. > :03:03.Police Scotland revealed today that since the stabbing incident here in

:03:04. > :03:07.October, 15 knife incidents have been reported in Aberdeen schools.

:03:08. > :03:09.From now on, when any weapon is found in a school in the city it

:03:10. > :03:12.will be reported to police. Our reporter Fiona Stalker has

:03:13. > :03:15.returned to Cults Academy one year on, to see how pupils and staff

:03:16. > :03:17.there are coping. A memorial tree for Bailey Gwynne -

:03:18. > :03:20.the willow a powerful symbol of recovery -

:03:21. > :03:22.something that pupils and staff here at Cults Academy are working on,

:03:23. > :03:25.memories of October 28 last I was in an English class

:03:26. > :03:33.overlooking the car park. After the incident there were a lot

:03:34. > :03:36.of rumours going around, Nobody could have predicted

:03:37. > :03:43.that from a stab wound. I remember somebody saying

:03:44. > :03:51.it was a bleeding nose and then so when all that was happening

:03:52. > :03:54.no-one knew what had actually happened and there was

:03:55. > :03:56.a lot of confusion. Then the devastating news that

:03:57. > :04:00.Bailey had died, and then the questions -

:04:01. > :04:02.had his killer brought knives At his trial, we heard

:04:03. > :04:12.he had but where? At his trial, we heard he had

:04:13. > :04:14.but were staff aware? There was an incident

:04:15. > :04:17.when he was in the second year when I had to interview him,

:04:18. > :04:20.as with school procedure - myself and another member

:04:21. > :04:22.of management met with him and he emptied all his bags

:04:23. > :04:24.and possessions and we had He was well aware of

:04:25. > :04:28.the consequences and the school rule and indeed the legal situation

:04:29. > :04:31.about carrying weapons and did not give us any reason to think

:04:32. > :04:34.that he did not understand that. What happened at this school

:04:35. > :04:43.is thankfully very rare but the report is calling

:04:44. > :04:45.for changes to the law which would allow teachers to search

:04:46. > :04:49.pupils without consent. It is being considered

:04:50. > :04:53.but some do not agree. We think it would undermine

:04:54. > :04:57.the teacher-pupil relationship, undermine trust, it would be almost

:04:58. > :05:00.like being a prison warden If incidents arose, it

:05:01. > :05:09.could possibly escalate them. And away from the glare of publicity

:05:10. > :05:11.surrounding the report today, the family and friends

:05:12. > :05:14.of Bailey Gwynne are quietly finalising plans for a stained-glass

:05:15. > :05:20.window in his memory. The life and death of the gentle,

:05:21. > :05:23.considerate young man forever woven New figures show that in recent

:05:24. > :05:30.years more than one in ten children have started primary school

:05:31. > :05:34.in Scotland overweight or obese. The statistics come

:05:35. > :05:36.from Cancer Research UK which is urging the government to do

:05:37. > :05:39.more to tackle the problem. Mother of three Kirsty Thomasson

:05:40. > :05:49.wants to make sure that her She found herself four stone

:05:50. > :05:56.overweight after consuming too much It was when I was in soft play

:05:57. > :06:05.with my eldest son for his third birthday, I sat down

:06:06. > :06:09.and my jeans ripped, I was really upset and could not

:06:10. > :06:15.look at myself in the mirror. She now weighs a much healthier nine

:06:16. > :06:17.stone, but that is not Cancer Research UK says Scotland

:06:18. > :06:22.has one of the heaviest It says over the last decade almost

:06:23. > :06:29.83,000 children have started school Now the charity wants

:06:30. > :06:34.the Scottish Government to take direct action by restricting

:06:35. > :06:37.the billboard advertising of junk food and cutting multi-buy

:06:38. > :06:46.and sensible markets. food and cutting multi-buy

:06:47. > :06:49.discounts in supermarkets. And cancer prevention specialists

:06:50. > :06:51.say action is needed right now. We know overweight or obesity

:06:52. > :06:54.is linked to 13 types of cancer, so unless we help those children

:06:55. > :06:58.to become healthier in the future we'll have more overweight or obese

:06:59. > :07:01.adults and that's a real worry. The Scottish Government says it

:07:02. > :07:04.will consider taking action where it We would give consideration

:07:05. > :07:09.to the multi-buy. We will look at that

:07:10. > :07:11.as part of the obesity strategy going forward,

:07:12. > :07:14.we've already begun to put some consideration into that

:07:15. > :07:19.but there is obviously very limited We could do things around billboards

:07:20. > :07:25.in the cinema but TV advertising, Ministers want all parents to help

:07:26. > :07:35.their children eat healthily. The Queensferry Crossing has

:07:36. > :07:40.set a new world record Officials from the Guinness Book

:07:41. > :07:46.of Records have been to the bridge They are incredibly proud

:07:47. > :07:54.of the record on this bridge for the longest free-standing

:07:55. > :07:57.balanced structure anywhere Basically, it's like a massive

:07:58. > :08:04.see-saw centred around that tower in the centre

:08:05. > :08:06.section here of the bridge. Over here, this is the south

:08:07. > :08:10.side of the bridge, but what is really quite unnerving,

:08:11. > :08:15.right here on the very, very end of this section is,

:08:16. > :08:18.there is the water down there. You can see how much

:08:19. > :08:21.we are moving up and down. When the wind really picks up,

:08:22. > :08:23.it can move a meter, Of course, the record will not stand

:08:24. > :08:29.for very long because this That means that the record is gone,

:08:30. > :08:35.because it's no longer Right now the record-breaking

:08:36. > :08:39.centre deck team can brag across the gap to their colleagues

:08:40. > :08:45.on the southern deck. The record was for Central Tower -

:08:46. > :08:48.South Tower can't take much It's great to be able to talk

:08:49. > :08:54.to the guys face-to-face rather than pick up the phone or the radio

:08:55. > :08:59.you will a the time. than pick up the phone

:09:00. > :09:02.or the radio all the time. The bridge was meant to be

:09:03. > :09:05.opened by this December - delays and bad weather have meant

:09:06. > :09:08.setbacks to the project. Nearly 40 days lost

:09:09. > :09:09.between June and September. The Scottish Government is confident

:09:10. > :09:12.it will now be finished After today there will be eight

:09:13. > :09:16.pieces of deck to come up. There is very important work to be

:09:17. > :09:19.done in terms of the wind shielding. It should mean it should never be

:09:20. > :09:22.closed for high winds We have to put a structure, tarmac,

:09:23. > :09:30.on the structure itself. That will be happening

:09:31. > :09:34.at a difficult time of the year. We always said we are at

:09:35. > :09:38.the mercy of the weather. The contractors are assuring us it

:09:39. > :09:42.will be finished in May next year. Potentially tough times

:09:43. > :09:43.ahead this winter. Today it was about basking in

:09:44. > :09:54.the glow of being record-breakers. Scotland suffered their first

:09:55. > :09:56.World Cup qualifying defeat in Group F as Slovakia

:09:57. > :09:59.registered their first points. Alasdair Lamonts has just sent

:10:00. > :10:15.this report from Trnava. You join me inside the news

:10:16. > :10:18.conference hall at the city arena as we await the appearance of the

:10:19. > :10:20.Scotland manager, Gordon Strachan. You have to imagine he will be

:10:21. > :10:24.enormously frustrated after a second poor result in the space of four

:10:25. > :10:27.days. There was a good deal of controversy about Slovakia's opening

:10:28. > :10:33.goal. Steven Fletcher looked to have been bodychecked before the host

:10:34. > :10:37.went forward. An initial header was kept out, but for's powered in the

:10:38. > :10:41.rebound. Scotland played reasonably well and were still in the game

:10:42. > :10:46.until more inadequate defender allowed plenty of time and space

:10:47. > :10:50.inside the pencil -- penalty area for Slovakia to score a second. The

:10:51. > :10:56.fragility of the visitors defence was shown even more starkly as

:10:57. > :11:00.Slovakia scored their third. Scotland were emphatically beaten.

:11:01. > :11:04.The result may be a little harsh on Scotland, but an inability to defend

:11:05. > :11:07.or scoring goals is a bad mixture and it means the Scots face yet

:11:08. > :11:09.another failed qualifying campaign. Now it's over to Judith

:11:10. > :11:22.with the weather outlook At least the beginning of October

:11:23. > :11:25.mix for the football results. A lovely starch to the month. Things

:11:26. > :11:31.gradually starting to change as we had through the course of this week.

:11:32. > :11:37.Here is a beautiful picture of a sunset. As we had through the

:11:38. > :11:40.overnight period, we will see cloudy skies and eastern outbreaks of

:11:41. > :11:45.showery rain. Clear skies in the West where it will be chilly.

:11:46. > :11:50.Tomorrow morning. -- more morning, there is an east-west split.

:11:51. > :11:54.Sunshine early on in the West, the East more cloudy with more of the

:11:55. > :11:57.breeze bringing outbreaks of showery rain. First thing tomorrow, where

:11:58. > :12:02.the sunshine is it will feel on the cool side if not cold. Toward parts

:12:03. > :12:07.of the West Highlands, maybe an early frost. In the east,

:12:08. > :12:09.temperatures are bit higher and across the Northern Isles, dry and

:12:10. > :12:13.bright start with light winds. Staying that way for much of the

:12:14. > :12:17.day. As for the rest of the morning, we will continue to see cloudy

:12:18. > :12:20.skies. Cloud starting to increase further west as we have go through

:12:21. > :12:26.the course of the danger the afternoon. One or two outbreaks of

:12:27. > :12:30.showery rain though we hold onto clear skies in the west of the

:12:31. > :12:34.Highlands. Northern Ireland faring well, the west of the UK seem good

:12:35. > :12:42.sunny spells. We will see some blustery showers running along the

:12:43. > :12:45.south coast tomorrow underline from linkage to North Wales. More cloud

:12:46. > :12:50.across the eastern side the country where you will feel the noticeable

:12:51. > :12:55.easterly, quite keen breeze making it feel cool. Scotland, temperatures

:12:56. > :12:58.around 11 to 12 degrees in the East, perhaps 14 or 15 across the

:12:59. > :13:01.north-west. As far as the rest of the afternoon and evening is

:13:02. > :13:05.concerned, further outbreaks of showery rain feeding in. In the

:13:06. > :13:09.West, largely dry. That cast-iron area of high pressure is still

:13:10. > :13:12.there, but we see lower pressure feeding him from the south,

:13:13. > :13:17.squeezing the isobars, bringing stronger winds. It will be windier

:13:18. > :13:18.on Thursday with showery rain in the East and dry in the West.

:13:19. > :13:23.Our next update is during Breakfast at 6.25 tomorrow morning.

:13:24. > :13:25.But from everyone on the late team here in Glasgow

:13:26. > :13:32.and around the country - goodnight.
