:00:47. > :00:49.A beautiful 15-year-old with a full life ahead of her and a mass

:00:50. > :00:52.of family and friends left to carry on with her no longer here.

:00:53. > :00:55.There is no sentence high enough to justify what has happened,

:00:56. > :00:58.but we can now say there is one less evil man in this world,

:00:59. > :01:04.which then makes it that bit more safer for our kids to grow up in.

:01:05. > :01:06.John Leathem ran a deli in Clydebank.

:01:07. > :01:09.Here he is opening up on a Saturday morning in March.

:01:13. > :01:17.She was on her way to her Saturday hairdressing job but she didn't

:01:18. > :01:22.Within ten minutes of her buying that roll, John Leathem had

:01:23. > :01:26.taken her through to the back and killed her.

:01:27. > :01:29.He stabbed Paige more than 146 times.

:01:30. > :01:33.CCTV showed him in a white T-shirt and trainers, running to a shop

:01:37. > :01:38.He went out to his car and opened the boot.

:01:39. > :01:41.The next thing he did was carry Paige's body out

:01:42. > :01:46.He put her in the boot and closed it.

:01:47. > :01:49.Two days later, he dumped Paige's body just off this busy dual

:01:50. > :01:58.The only explanation that Leathem offered the court for that savage

:01:59. > :02:00.attack he launched on Paige just moments after she got

:02:01. > :02:04.here was that she wanted to work here and they had fallen out

:02:05. > :02:07.about it, but he didn't tell that to the police and the police heard

:02:08. > :02:11.nothing from Paige's friends or family to back that up.

:02:12. > :02:14.What he did tell the police, however, was that he was positive

:02:15. > :02:18.they would not find any trace of Paige's blood here.

:02:19. > :02:21.Well, he was wrong, they did, in the shop and also in the boot

:02:22. > :02:29.No evidence of any motive has been put before me to explain

:02:30. > :02:39.You must have struck the victim in excess of 146 times with a knife,

:02:40. > :02:42.which on your account just happened to be handy in the back room

:02:43. > :02:52.What you did was truly reprehensible.

:02:53. > :02:56.It is impossible to comprehend how an apparently happily married man,

:02:57. > :02:59.with a young child, who is running a successful business,

:03:00. > :03:07.is capable of such an horrific level of violence.

:03:08. > :03:09.After Lady Rae sentenced Leathem to a minimum term

:03:10. > :03:12.of 27 years in jail, the court room which

:03:13. > :03:18.Friends and family of Paige shouted "beast" and "monster" and one woman

:03:19. > :03:21.relative banged on the side of the dock screaming,

:03:22. > :03:26.Leathem didn't look up, he didn't look at them,

:03:27. > :03:29.he kept his eyes on the floor as he was led downstairs

:03:30. > :03:35.There's a huge piece missing in our family that can

:03:36. > :03:39.I am thankful for the 15 years we had with Paige, from the kind

:03:40. > :03:42.and generous wee soul she was to the mature young woman

:03:43. > :03:46.She may not be with us any more but she will live

:03:47. > :03:48.on through her brothers and sister and through all the

:03:49. > :03:58.People in Scotland are to be asked to look out for signs that a person

:03:59. > :04:00.has been trafficked and also consider whether goods they're

:04:01. > :04:04.buying have been made by someone forced to work against their will.

:04:05. > :04:06.It's part of a new strategy to address the problem

:04:07. > :04:11.as figures show an increase in human trafficking here.

:04:12. > :04:17.More from our political correspondent, Lucy Adams.

:04:18. > :04:21.This man was trafficked to Scotland from Vietnam this year

:04:22. > :04:24.after his brother was involved in an investment that went wrong.

:04:25. > :04:27.TRANSLATION: The gangster said they would kill my family

:04:28. > :04:31.if we could not pay back my brother's debt.

:04:32. > :04:34.My brother was killed as a warning, and for my family's safety,

:04:35. > :04:40.The Scottish Government want people to wake up to the fact that human

:04:41. > :04:46.It could be in remote rural areas or in high streets like this one.

:04:47. > :04:49.Last year there were 145 victims identified, a 30% increase

:04:50. > :04:55.Now they want customers to think about whether there could be

:04:56. > :04:58.victims of trafficking in their local nail bar,

:04:59. > :05:02.in their local shops, or indeed, in their car wash.

:05:03. > :05:05.A key part of this strategy is to raise the whole issue

:05:06. > :05:09.of human trafficking into the public's consciousness.

:05:10. > :05:11.Many people will think this is something that doesn't affect

:05:12. > :05:13.them or isn't happening within their community,

:05:14. > :05:19.What we want to do is make people more aware of the risk of human

:05:20. > :05:21.trafficking and if they have information or suspect

:05:22. > :05:25.it is happening, then to share that concern with the police so it can

:05:26. > :05:31.The strategy says there is a strong presumption against prosecution

:05:32. > :05:34.where victims have been forced to commit crimes such as working

:05:35. > :05:38.in cannabis factories, however the BBC understands some

:05:39. > :05:42.victims have faced charges regardless.

:05:43. > :05:44.The strategy is not enough in itself.

:05:45. > :05:46.Awareness raising is a necessary first step, but there

:05:47. > :05:50.By that I mean that the strategy needs to lead to actions

:05:51. > :05:53.in our public services to identify and root out trafficking

:05:54. > :05:55.as well as within our communities as well.

:05:56. > :05:59.Without that whole society effort and that relentless proactivity

:06:00. > :06:02.in our communities and public services, then we won't get

:06:03. > :06:05.underneath this and we won't be able to identify those who really

:06:06. > :06:08.Human trafficking is set to increase further because of

:06:09. > :06:18.The new strategy has been welcomed but experts say everyone involved

:06:19. > :06:20.needs to ensure its being implemented on the ground.

:06:21. > :06:27.Donald Trump's two Scottish golf courses together lost

:06:28. > :06:30.about ?9.5 million last year, according to accounts filed

:06:31. > :06:36.The Trump Turnberry golf resort in Ayrshire, which the US

:06:37. > :06:38.presidential hopeful bought for an undisclosed sum in 2014,

:06:39. > :06:45.Mr Trump's other Scottish course - Menie in Aberdeenshire -

:06:46. > :06:49.The American has said he would invest ?200 million

:06:50. > :06:50.in Turnberry, having bought the resort from

:06:51. > :06:58.NHS Lothian says there is one more confirmed case of measles

:06:59. > :07:03.The total number of patients in the current minor

:07:04. > :07:06.Most of those affected by the virus are students

:07:07. > :07:08.at Edinburgh University, where special clinics are being set

:07:09. > :07:11.up for anyone who may not have had both doses of the MMR vaccine

:07:12. > :07:19.Output from the Scottish economy grew by 0.4% in the second

:07:20. > :07:23.quarter of this year, according to the latest statistics.

:07:24. > :07:26.That's compared with a growth of 0.7% for the UK

:07:27. > :07:32.It follows no growth in Scotland over the first

:07:33. > :07:37.Rail passengers have been warned to expect disruption ahead

:07:38. > :07:42.of engineering work getting under way across the network.

:07:43. > :07:44.ScotRail said some services were being cancelled, while many

:07:45. > :07:51.Earlier I spoke to our reporter Andrew Black

:07:52. > :08:02.about what the engineering work was for.

:08:03. > :08:08.Scotland is promising a revolution in real services and it wants to

:08:09. > :08:14.improve and make vastly improved services. Firstly it is saying that

:08:15. > :08:17.passengers will have to experience some pain. The rail operator ball

:08:18. > :08:21.start the latest round of engineering works which will affect

:08:22. > :08:25.services in Central Scotland, including the services which runs

:08:26. > :08:32.here from Glasgow Queen Street station. That begins on weekends

:08:33. > :08:38.from the 22nd of October and continues into the 20th of November.

:08:39. > :08:42.There were no direct trains between Glasgow and Dunblane and Edinburgh

:08:43. > :08:46.and stumbling, that is one of the big changes but other changes exist

:08:47. > :08:50.as well and some services will be cancelled, some will be replaced by

:08:51. > :08:56.buses and it will probably need tuning systems at Key stations as

:08:57. > :09:00.well. ScotRail have suggested passengers look at the alternative

:09:01. > :09:04.pin cable that has been put in place before travelling. Earlier I spoke

:09:05. > :09:10.to the boss of ScotRail and he told me that the work they were carrying

:09:11. > :09:15.it was vital. We have got a huge workload that must be completed to

:09:16. > :09:18.bring in this faster, greener and longer electric trains next year.

:09:19. > :09:20.bring in this faster, greener and Part of this is the new -- the

:09:21. > :09:24.renewal of tracks and it will happen Part of this is the new -- the

:09:25. > :09:28.over the weekends. The electrification of the line is also

:09:29. > :09:34.necessary. We would ask customers to be patient with us, we understand

:09:35. > :09:38.this has a negative impact on some journeys. The Scottish Government

:09:39. > :09:42.has said that ScotRail's performance this year has not quite been at the

:09:43. > :09:50.level that is expected and that is the backdrop to the announcement

:09:51. > :09:52.today. The Dutch owners have been running the service since last year

:09:53. > :09:57.and says it is determined to make improvements. On the engineering

:09:58. > :10:00.works and ends today, Scott Kriel know that some people will not be

:10:01. > :10:04.works and ends today, Scott Kriel happy but insist this work will

:10:05. > :10:09.transform the rail network in Scotland into one of the best.

:10:10. > :10:11.Passengers will need to endure some short-term pain for long-term gain,

:10:12. > :10:18.the tellers. -- they tell us. A man who died after falling

:10:19. > :10:21.during a climb on the north face of Ben Nevis has been named

:10:22. > :10:23.as Fraser Campbell He was injured on Friday

:10:24. > :10:26.while climbing with another man and airlifted from the scene

:10:27. > :10:29.to hosptal early on Saturday after what rescuers

:10:30. > :10:30.described as a "difficult The next Moderator of the Church

:10:31. > :10:34.of Scotland's General Assembly has called for the Church to respond

:10:35. > :10:37.to changes in society and help bridge gaps between individuals,

:10:38. > :10:39.communities and nations. The Reverend Dr Derek Browning,

:10:40. > :10:41.a minister at Morningside Parish Church in Edinburgh,

:10:42. > :10:47.will take up his position next year. The charge is no longer the same as

:10:48. > :10:50.it was ten, 20, 30, 40 years ago and one of the things I find exciting is

:10:51. > :10:54.the way that the church is embracing different communities, different

:10:55. > :10:59.ways of doing worship but also doing things that people find valuable. We

:11:00. > :11:03.have to be a church that this fit for purpose for the 21st-century.

:11:04. > :11:06.Plans to rebuild the main stand at Tynecastle football stadium have

:11:07. > :11:07.been approved by Edinburgh City Council.

:11:08. > :11:10.?11 million will be spent on the upgrade at the Hearts ground,

:11:11. > :11:12.which will increase its capacity to more than 20,000.

:11:13. > :11:15.The club hopes work will start next month and be finished

:11:16. > :11:20.Let's get the weather now from Judith.

:11:21. > :11:27.Thank you, Jackie. So far, it has been the season of mists and mellow

:11:28. > :11:31.fruitfulness. Things are set to change over the next few days. The

:11:32. > :11:35.high pressure which has been responsible for the dry weather over

:11:36. > :11:38.Scandinavia shrinks away and we will see will pressure pulling him from

:11:39. > :11:42.Spain and France, bringing outbreaks of rain and windy conditions as we

:11:43. > :11:46.head into the rest of the week and the weekend. There are signs of

:11:47. > :11:50.something more settled into next week. As far as tonight is

:11:51. > :12:00.concerned, right across the West of Scotland with clear skies,

:12:01. > :12:02.particularly for Shetland and the North West with showers coming in

:12:03. > :12:06.from the East. Tomorrow will start dry in the West and South. Clearer

:12:07. > :12:08.skies across the North West and possibly a touch of frost first

:12:09. > :12:12.thing, so quite chilly. The showers beginning in the South East.

:12:13. > :12:15.Temperatures will feel chilly with those easterly winds coming from the

:12:16. > :12:20.North Sea and introducing some cooler and cold here. It has been

:12:21. > :12:23.like that across the North with lower temperatures. Lighter winds

:12:24. > :12:26.for Shetland and it looks to be staying fair tomorrow with light

:12:27. > :12:30.winds compared to what the rest of us will see. The East of Scotland

:12:31. > :12:35.will see those showers pick up during the course of the day. Fife

:12:36. > :12:39.and Tayside will get the heavier showers. Very few in the West. The

:12:40. > :12:45.best of the sunshine is across the West and North West Highlands.

:12:46. > :12:48.Further for Northern Ireland and a lot of the UK tomorrow, although we

:12:49. > :12:52.will start to see sunny and dry conditions feeding across the South.

:12:53. > :12:56.Brisk winds across the East coast feeding though showers and it will

:12:57. > :13:02.feel chilly everywhere across the board. Highs of 14 or 15 Celsius at

:13:03. > :13:07.best. Similar values for Scotland with the wind is taking the edge of

:13:08. > :13:11.the temperatures. Showers for the East of Scotland, drier in the West

:13:12. > :13:15.tomorrow, and Friday, we are looking at a windy day with possible gales

:13:16. > :13:20.up towards the North East corner. Heavy showers here as well. Drier

:13:21. > :13:24.across the South and far West and it will feel cooler. That is your

:13:25. > :13:26.forecast. Our next update is during Breakfast

:13:27. > :13:29.tomorrow morning. But from everyone on the

:13:30. > :13:33.late team, goodnight.
