:00:00. > :00:14.EU students in Scotland have been promised funding for another year.

:00:15. > :00:17.Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, who made the announcement at the SNP

:00:18. > :00:18.conference in Glasgow, also challenged UK Ministers

:00:19. > :00:20.to guarantee the right for EU students to stay

:00:21. > :00:34.This from our political editor Brian Taylor.

:00:35. > :00:39.After the Brexit vote, the university here promised their study

:00:40. > :00:44.places were secure. But still, they fret. For themselves and for those

:00:45. > :00:51.who want to follow them. A lot of my friends are EU students. So it was

:00:52. > :00:54.worrying for every single person. At the SNP conference, John Swinney

:00:55. > :01:00.promised to extend funding to EU students for another year, covering

:01:01. > :01:04.2017/18. He wants UK ministers to guarantee their right to stay,

:01:05. > :01:09.regardless of Brexit negotiations. These people are not cards to be

:01:10. > :01:14.played. They are fellow human beings, to use them as negotiating

:01:15. > :01:18.chips is be scene and this party -- obscene and this party and SNP

:01:19. > :01:22.Government will have none of it. The conference broadened the theme by

:01:23. > :01:26.welcoming the Brain family from Australia, who eventually won the

:01:27. > :01:30.right to stay in Scotland. Alex Salmond said the story showed the

:01:31. > :01:34.Conservatives' true intent. If we stick to London rule, we know

:01:35. > :01:39.exactly what lies in store for it, it will boil down to its essence, a

:01:40. > :01:44.closed, intolerant, backward looking society. Theresa May's little

:01:45. > :01:48.England. And the new Deputy Leader had an explicit warning for Theresa

:01:49. > :01:53.May. If you continue to ignore the expressed will of the people of

:01:54. > :01:59.Scotland, if you refuse to even consider how we might protect

:02:00. > :02:02.Scotland's place in the EU, then be in no doubt, your days as Prime

:02:03. > :02:09.Scotland's place in the EU, then be Minister of a United Kingdom are

:02:10. > :02:13.numbered. But does it all add up to an early independence referendum?

:02:14. > :02:18.Tell bats are not entirely -- delegates are not entirely certain.

:02:19. > :02:21.Some argue yes. The message is this: The days of Scotland being side

:02:22. > :02:30.lined is over. Remain means remain. Our voice will be heard. The next

:02:31. > :02:37.independence referendum must be one we are confident we can win when the

:02:38. > :02:43.time is right. I do urge caution, while a plaud the sentiment of the

:02:44. > :02:48.resolution, my concern is that we're tying the independence referendum

:02:49. > :02:52.solely to the trigger of Brexit. Reflecting on that dilemma, Nicola

:02:53. > :02:57.Sturgeon stoled delegates, "Welcome to my world." Welcome indeed to post

:02:58. > :03:00.Brexit politics, rarely pure, never simple.

:03:01. > :03:02.Hundreds of mourners have attended the funeral

:03:03. > :03:05.of the boxer Mike Towell, who died after a bout in Glasgow.

:03:06. > :03:07.The service at St Andrews Cathedral in Dundee was also attended

:03:08. > :03:12.It's emerged that in the weeks before the fight Mike Towell had

:03:13. > :03:16.been suffering from headaches but had put them down to stress.

:03:17. > :03:31.The family of Mike Towell say the two weeks since his death have been

:03:32. > :03:36.surreal for them. This morning, they gathered at St Andrews cathedral in

:03:37. > :03:44.the boxer's Dundee home to say their final goodbye. They weren't alone.

:03:45. > :03:47.Around 300 people joined them - friends, ordinary community members

:03:48. > :03:50.and the boxing fraternity wanting to pay their respects. Among them was

:03:51. > :03:55.Dale Evans, the fighter who delivered the blow which floored

:03:56. > :03:58.Mike Towell. He later paid his own tribute to Mike at this mural. In a

:03:59. > :04:14.statement, the family said: That spirit of generosity was also

:04:15. > :04:18.evident in the funeral service. One of his friends spoke. He was very

:04:19. > :04:23.humorous. He talked warmly about Mike's life, the type of upbringing

:04:24. > :04:27.he had. He was a guy with a great sense of humour, a guy who was very,

:04:28. > :04:32.very much loved among friends and family and the boxing community

:04:33. > :04:36.generally. The funeral's not the only way Dundee is remembering Mike

:04:37. > :04:41.Towell. There's a huge amount of respect and affection for Mike

:04:42. > :04:44.Towell and his family here in Dundee, but questions remain about

:04:45. > :04:53.the state of his health in the lead up to that fatal fight. Mike died

:04:54. > :04:58.after his life support machine was switched off following his collapse

:04:59. > :05:02.in this fight last month. It later emerged he was suffering headaches

:05:03. > :05:07.during training. What is clear, is that his family is devastated, but

:05:08. > :05:11.they say they'll also smile every day at his memory.

:05:12. > :05:13.The two-year-old girl, who was killed after being hit

:05:14. > :05:16.by a car in Perthshire, has been named as Harlow Edwards

:05:17. > :05:21.Her six-year-old brother and 17-year-old sister were also hit,

:05:22. > :05:24.when the car mounted the pavement, after being in a collision

:05:25. > :05:28.They're both in hospital with serious injuries.

:05:29. > :05:30.The accident happened on the A94 yesterday afternoon.

:05:31. > :05:33.Police say they're very concerned for the welfare of a woman from Ayr

:05:34. > :05:35.who's gone missing with her two children.

:05:36. > :05:38.29-year-old Farah Fadli, who's also known as Farah Gillespie,

:05:39. > :05:40.was least seen by a friend on Wednesday morning.

:05:41. > :05:43.It's believed she was with her ten-year-old son McKenzie

:05:44. > :05:50.In just over a week, the Burrell Collection in Glasgow

:05:51. > :05:53.will close its doors for four years for a multi-million

:05:54. > :05:58.While the A-listed building is refurbished, the collection

:05:59. > :06:01.of more than 9,000 artefacts will be moved.

:06:02. > :06:06.Our arts correspondent Pauline McLean reports.

:06:07. > :06:16.I've got a beautiful and unique carpet fragment from Afghanistan

:06:17. > :06:25.from the ancient city of Herat. It was made there by weavers in 1610

:06:26. > :06:28.AD. Deep in the basement of the Burrell collection lie many

:06:29. > :06:33.treasures which have never seen the light of day. It's lived in this

:06:34. > :06:36.stores for very many years. We're hoping in the new refushish Burrell

:06:37. > :06:42.stores for very many years. We're it will apair in a story about fig

:06:43. > :06:47.ative imagery in Islamic art, is it permissible or forbidden given it's

:06:48. > :06:52.a controversial issue. Less than a fifth of the collection is out on

:06:53. > :06:56.public display. In the new building it will be nearer 90%, including the

:06:57. > :07:01.basement, which will be open to the public for the first time. This is

:07:02. > :07:06.the biggest undertaking since the Burrell collection opened in 1983.

:07:07. > :07:11.It must be great satisfaction to you to see this building open and its

:07:12. > :07:14.treasures so well displayed. The parkland site, far from city centre

:07:15. > :07:20.pollution, a condition of the bequest. Ascy shipping magnate, Sir

:07:21. > :07:24.Whirl Burrell was concerned about keeping his treasures safe. It was

:07:25. > :07:29.why he insisted it never tour abroad. The City argued this was

:07:30. > :07:33.outdated. After a lengthy legal battle overturned the condition.

:07:34. > :07:37.While the Burrell is closed, key art works will tour the world, raising

:07:38. > :07:42.the collection's profile as well as funds. This has been a great pivotal

:07:43. > :07:46.achievement for us. It means that we're really released on the world

:07:47. > :07:49.stage now for the first time. That means it encourages great

:07:50. > :07:55.collaboration with international partners, such as the museum of fine

:07:56. > :07:59.art in Houston, where four of our pictures will go on display

:08:00. > :08:02.imminently. Most of the 9,000 artefacts will go into storage,

:08:03. > :08:06.imminently. Most of the 9,000 carefully wrapped and boxed and

:08:07. > :08:09.catalogued in the coming months. Ready to go back on display in the

:08:10. > :08:13.new Burrell museum in 2020. Let's get the weekend weather

:08:14. > :08:21.outlook now, from Judith. Good evening. We did actually see

:08:22. > :08:27.something sunny coming through towards the end of the day.

:08:28. > :08:32.As far as tonight's concerned, we have a weather front introducing

:08:33. > :08:35.outbreaks of rain across Eastern Scotland, mainly dry in the west. It

:08:36. > :08:40.will be windy particularly across the far north. Tomorrow it's a wet

:08:41. > :08:47.and windy start for many of us. Where we're not seeing the rain, it

:08:48. > :08:54.will spread to western areas, accompanied by strong, gusty, east

:08:55. > :08:58.or south-easterly winds. It stays dry for Shetland tomorrow, though.

:08:59. > :09:01.For the rest of the UK, we see the rain across Northern Ireland. That

:09:02. > :09:04.moves away northwards. Further south, there's a lot of dry weather.

:09:05. > :09:11.Temperatures getting milder in the south. The winds here go to the

:09:12. > :09:14.south, 18 at best. Showers band together across south-west Wales,

:09:15. > :09:18.heavy down pours in the mix. Back here in Scotland, we see highs of 15

:09:19. > :09:22.Celsius, when the sun comes out. Drier conditions feeding into the

:09:23. > :09:27.south-west. Still a brisk easterly wind taking the edge off the values.

:09:28. > :09:34.Shetland staying dry with sunshine wind taking the edge off the values.

:09:35. > :09:38.further north. Not looking too bad. The rain moves north into the

:09:39. > :09:42.evening, brighter for the south. The rain clears away. Low pressure never

:09:43. > :09:46.too far away. We will see a number of showers courtesy of that low

:09:47. > :09:48.pressure on Saturday. Still a lot of bright, sunny weather with a fresh

:09:49. > :09:50.southerly wind. From everyone on the late
