:00:11. > :00:14.Storm Barbara has battered its way across Scotland, causing power

:00:15. > :00:15.cuts, school closures and tough travelling conditions.

:00:16. > :00:18.Many ferry services have been cancelled and there's disruption

:00:19. > :00:21.Festive events have also been affected due to high winds.

:00:22. > :00:23.It's meant a challenging Christmas getaway for many people.

:00:24. > :00:34.Aileen Clarke reports on Barbara's impact.

:00:35. > :00:37.By noon Storm Barbara was making her presence felt

:00:38. > :00:43.Passengers for Rothesay could only watch and wait.

:00:44. > :00:46.Here at Wemyss Bay, they haven't managed any crossings at all

:00:47. > :00:52.That is because here on the pier it is gusting up to 70

:00:53. > :00:57.Some crossings came back on in the afternoon but these

:00:58. > :01:00.intrepid visitors decided it was not the day for

:01:01. > :01:09.From last three days I am here and I am facing these

:01:10. > :01:13.Whenever you go out, every day you have a new surprise!

:01:14. > :01:21.All along the west coast, most of the CalMac

:01:22. > :01:35.Many people have travelled earlier but for those still trying

:01:36. > :01:38.to make it to family and friends, it is fingers

:01:39. > :01:40.crossed for a break in the weather tomorrow.

:01:41. > :01:42.We are looking at a window after three o'clock

:01:43. > :01:44.tomorrow but we can't guarantee that people could be

:01:45. > :01:47.So it might be that there's no boats before Christmas?

:01:48. > :01:51.However, we are reviewing it ongoing, and we will

:01:52. > :01:53.put announcements out as we can define that.

:01:54. > :01:55.On the railways, a few more west coast services ran

:01:56. > :01:56.than had been expected, though flooded

:01:57. > :01:59.lines have caused a problem on some cross-border services.

:02:00. > :02:01.For those driving, the Forth Bridge, like many others around

:02:02. > :02:03.the country, was closed to high-sided vehicles.

:02:04. > :02:05.In the Highlands, more than 100 schools started

:02:06. > :02:09.their Christmas holidays a day early.

:02:10. > :02:11.And on the east coast, Storm Barbara brought

:02:12. > :02:15.the Edinburgh Christmas Market to a stop until she blew through.

:02:16. > :02:19.It has been on Lewis and the other Western Isles where the winds have

:02:20. > :02:20.really been showing their strength, reaching 75 miles

:02:21. > :02:25.This retired power station was pressed back into service after a

:02:26. > :02:29.power cut and with the animals safely inside, there was time

:02:30. > :02:35.to battle through the gales in Stornoway with gifts.

:02:36. > :02:38.I've done all I can, moved livestock into sheltered areas,

:02:39. > :02:40.made sure they are safe with no debris lying about

:02:41. > :02:48.The hens are locked down as part of the poultry

:02:49. > :02:51.lockdown, so they are safe and hopefully I will sleep soundly

:02:52. > :02:54.over the next couple of nights, I've done everything I can now, anyway.

:02:55. > :02:56.Storm Barbara is expected to clear tomorrow but

:02:57. > :03:01.That will cause disruption, likely to be generally located

:03:02. > :03:03.in the Northern Isles - Orkney and Shetland -

:03:04. > :03:06.but perhaps touching the tip of Caithness as well and that's

:03:07. > :03:14.But before that, tonight in the Northern Isles,

:03:15. > :03:17.they are bracing themselves for the worst winds

:03:18. > :03:25.Our reporter Craig Anderson has been assessing the storm's effects

:03:26. > :03:28.in the north of the country and earlier sent this report

:03:29. > :03:40.Well, the winds may have reached their peak about earlier, but there

:03:41. > :03:44.were still travel problems tonight with two planes heading for

:03:45. > :03:48.Stornoway forced to turn back to both Inverness and Aberdeen as they

:03:49. > :03:51.were unable to land because of the weather conditions. Stornoway

:03:52. > :03:56.airport closed shortly afterwards. The winds are due to abate overnight

:03:57. > :04:02.but with that comes a drop in temperatures and because of that,

:04:03. > :04:06.more of this stuff, snow. I am on one of the highest sections of the

:04:07. > :04:10.A9 between Inverness and Perth and the forecasters have said there will

:04:11. > :04:16.be quite heavy showers of snow on the ground up 200 metres up to about

:04:17. > :04:20.ten centimetres and that two to three centimetres on lower ground.

:04:21. > :04:23.Tomorrow that could lead to treacherous driving conditions.

:04:24. > :04:27.Police said because of the travel chaos today there could be more

:04:28. > :04:31.people on the boards tomorrow and their message is this, I just your

:04:32. > :04:36.driving to suit the conditions, that means leaving plenty of time for

:04:37. > :04:39.your journey, leaving plenty of distance between you and a vehicle

:04:40. > :04:44.in front and also perhaps taking things like a torch, extra warm

:04:45. > :04:50.clothing and also something to eat on the way, just in case you get

:04:51. > :04:55.stuck. Storm Barbara may have passed, but the effects of that

:04:56. > :04:58.storm will be felt overnight and tomorrow as well.

:04:59. > :05:02.Craig Anderson. Six months ago today,

:05:03. > :05:04.a majority of voters backed The decision to opt for Brexit

:05:05. > :05:08.was a moment of enormous political significance but the future

:05:09. > :05:10.is still very unclear. Our political correspondent

:05:11. > :05:14.Andrew Kerr reports. The European Union referendum,

:05:15. > :05:21.which will lead to Brexit, Now the new Prime Minister has

:05:22. > :05:27.to lead the negotiations. And the vote reopened the Scottish

:05:28. > :05:44.independence question. It was on a bright day

:05:45. > :05:47.in June when the UK voted Six months on in the deep midwinter

:05:48. > :05:51.in the midst of a storm we are still not much clearer

:05:52. > :05:53.about what Brexit means. A new report from independent

:05:54. > :05:56.academics suggests that the UK Government's unwillingness

:05:57. > :05:57.to explain what Brexit I think the public is more puzzled

:05:58. > :06:02.about what is going on but where there is real surprise is in public

:06:03. > :06:06.administrations and other national capitals cos those

:06:07. > :06:08.across the English Channel are getting increasingly frustrated

:06:09. > :06:12.at the lack of definition This week the Scottish Government

:06:13. > :06:17.released their proposals to protect Scotland's place in Europe,

:06:18. > :06:19.as they put it, they want the Prime Minister to

:06:20. > :06:23.make arguments clear. In Scotland we have published a very

:06:24. > :06:27.detailed account of our objectives. We have a vision of

:06:28. > :06:29.what should take place. I suspect Theresa May has not

:06:30. > :06:33.shown her cards because there's nothing on her cards,

:06:34. > :06:40.she does not know what she wants and if she doesn't know that that's

:06:41. > :06:43.pretty disastrous for the whole of the country and other

:06:44. > :06:45.countries in Europe. Perhaps Theresa May is isolated

:06:46. > :06:52.in Europe with few friends but... Her strategy is not to reveal the

:06:53. > :06:55.plan at the moment. People talk about what sort

:06:56. > :07:00.of Brexit it will be, we want a red white and blue Brexit,

:07:01. > :07:06.the right one for the UK. UK ministers were not

:07:07. > :07:08.available today but did say they were confident they would get

:07:09. > :07:10.a deal that would work that will start Britain's exit

:07:11. > :07:17.from the EU. Football, and Aberdeen beat

:07:18. > :07:30.Motherwell 3-1 in their Scottish Niall McGinn hit his side's third

:07:31. > :07:34.goal to seal victory at Fir Park. Elsewhere, Dundee beat Hearts 3-2,

:07:35. > :07:37.Kilmarnock lost 1-0 to St Johnstone and Ross County lost 3-1 to Partick

:07:38. > :07:42.Thistle. Well, it's over to Kawser now

:07:43. > :07:54.with the weather outlook Good evening. Well, it is still a

:07:55. > :07:57.very windy out there but the strongest gusts have surpassed from

:07:58. > :08:01.storm Barbara but we will continue to see wintry showers as we head

:08:02. > :08:05.through the night. You can see Storm Barbara is to the North of us by the

:08:06. > :08:09.isobars remain tight and we have seen some wintry showers across the

:08:10. > :08:14.North with some snow at lower levels for a time. There is a Met Office

:08:15. > :08:17.VLB were warning overnight and it across the far North for the Western

:08:18. > :08:22.Isles and the Northern Isles we can expect some strong gusts. For the

:08:23. > :08:26.rest of the night, still quite breezy and the risk of icy stretches

:08:27. > :08:29.across the North of the Central Belt, snow and ice warnings are in

:08:30. > :08:38.force from the Met office overnight as temperatures dipped close to

:08:39. > :08:41.freezing and we will continue with those wintry showers falling any

:08:42. > :08:44.North as sweet and small. Falling as rain any South. It will be a cold

:08:45. > :08:46.start to Christmas Eve, when the web gales for the farm but compared to

:08:47. > :08:50.today, the winds will be moderate and it is a better bet for

:08:51. > :08:53.travelling during the course of the day although we will see more and

:08:54. > :08:57.the way of outbreaks of rain across the South West. If you are planning

:08:58. > :08:59.any last-minute Christmas shopping tomorrow afternoon or have any

:09:00. > :09:08.travel plans there will be wintry showers and they could be quite

:09:09. > :09:10.hazardous over that Hiya road routes with that small following. Some

:09:11. > :09:12.brighter moments in between the showers, especially across the East

:09:13. > :09:16.coast. Bitterly cold, Isil 56 degrees. It will feel cold with the

:09:17. > :09:20.wind chill. Storm Barbara has left us but Storm Conor is heading

:09:21. > :09:23.towards us on Christmas Eve night and Christmas Day. There will be

:09:24. > :09:27.strong winds and outbreaks of rain but milder air so we start of

:09:28. > :09:35.Christmas Day with mild error. Temperatures are in the double

:09:36. > :09:38.digits, 12 of the 14 degrees Celsius for the North East, potentially

:09:39. > :09:42.record-breaking. Strong winds will continue across the North West and

:09:43. > :09:47.we expect gusts of up to 60 mph with warnings in force. On Christmas Day

:09:48. > :09:51.night we are expecting wintry weather so it might be a white

:09:52. > :09:54.Christmas to end but for Boxing Day it will remain windy in the North

:09:55. > :09:58.with warnings in force, becoming more settled by the end of the day.

:09:59. > :10:02.From everyone on the late team here in Glasgow

:10:03. > :10:05.and around the country, goodnight and have
