:00:00. > :00:08.Here, on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.

:00:09. > :00:12.Police investigating a house fire on New Year's day, which killed

:00:13. > :00:14.a man and left his girlfriend critically injured say they want

:00:15. > :00:20.to trace the occupants of a car, which was seen nearby.

:00:21. > :00:23.23-year-old Cameron Logan died in the blaze, which police say

:00:24. > :00:25.was started deliberately at the family home in Milngavie.

:00:26. > :00:40.Teams of police officers searching hedgerows, bins and pavements along

:00:41. > :00:44.the road where half a mile ago from the scene of the fire and this

:00:45. > :00:51.investigation comes as detectives revealed that they are keen to trace

:00:52. > :01:02.a dark coloured car parked in a lay-by about the time the car was

:01:03. > :01:10.started. Unusually, the car had its engine running. There could be a

:01:11. > :01:13.reason why it was there, but we are appealing for anyone to come forward

:01:14. > :01:19.and say where that car was there. There may be a reasonable

:01:20. > :01:28.explanation. Get in touch with those and give as information. The fire

:01:29. > :01:32.that killed Logan, left his girlfriend in hospital. Her boss

:01:33. > :01:41.said the thoughts with everyone at the company where with her family.

:01:42. > :01:45.The crime scene is described as complex with officers also checking

:01:46. > :01:49.local CCTV and talking to neighbours. Detectives say the fire

:01:50. > :01:54.was started deliberately and was a targeted attack but they won't say

:01:55. > :01:58.whether or not they think the man was the intended victim. We are

:01:59. > :02:02.satisfied that it was not the wrong house that was picked, given that we

:02:03. > :02:09.know this was a deliberate fire, we are satisfied that it was targeted,

:02:10. > :02:15.however we're trying to work away to establish who intended to... The

:02:16. > :02:19.police will be keeping a high-profile presence in the area.

:02:20. > :02:21.Rescuers say a couple who survived a night in the Cairngorm mountains

:02:22. > :02:26.Bob and Cathy Elmer from Leicester were caught out when a planned

:02:27. > :02:29.They sheltered with their dog in survival bags in white out

:02:30. > :02:32.conditions, before they were found by a mountain rescue team.

:02:33. > :02:48.This was the moment members of the Cairngorm Mountain rescue team came

:02:49. > :02:53.across Bob and Cathy. The pair had been hill walking in Scotland for

:02:54. > :02:55.around 25 years, but they admit that despite their experience and

:02:56. > :02:58.equipment they were unprepared for the conditions they were to face

:02:59. > :03:04.when they ventured out on the first day of the year. We knew as winter

:03:05. > :03:12.time, we probably didn't quite judge really how long it was going to

:03:13. > :03:16.take. It became an issue when I got two thirds of the way down and Cathy

:03:17. > :03:20.were struggling to keep up with me. Then I knew that it was going to

:03:21. > :03:23.take a lot longer than what I had and has abated. With their collie

:03:24. > :03:27.take a lot longer than what I had dog in tow, they found themselves in

:03:28. > :03:29.deep slow in darkness and with the batteries in the head torches giving

:03:30. > :03:36.out. -- in snow. The snow was of 12 batteries in the head torches giving

:03:37. > :03:39.waste and we decided we couldn't go on any further because we didn't

:03:40. > :03:45.know where we are going. You couldn't see a hand in front of your

:03:46. > :03:49.face so we got the survivals bag out and got down in the night in them.

:03:50. > :03:53.face so we got the survivals bag out Mountain rescuers say that despite

:03:54. > :03:56.temperatures of -6 and high winds, their decision to stay put and

:03:57. > :04:07.weight of the daylight probably saved their lives. It probably was

:04:08. > :04:13.the decision that saved their lives to stay on Cairngorm even though it

:04:14. > :04:19.wasn't attractive. You can go up and Nevis on a summers day and you can

:04:20. > :04:25.be knee-high in snow. We've been there and done it. So, you have to

:04:26. > :04:31.go equipped and have the right kit even if the sun is shining on the

:04:32. > :04:35.ground. We are now well into the winter climbing season and while

:04:36. > :04:38.Scotland's weather can be unpredictable at the best of times

:04:39. > :04:44.that is especially the case or peer and during the winter months. The

:04:45. > :04:48.message to anyone venturing into the hills is make sure you have the

:04:49. > :04:51.right equipment, and skills and always be prepared to turn back.

:04:52. > :04:53.A hill walker has been airlifted from the Cairngorms

:04:54. > :04:56.It's understood two young mountaineers found the man

:04:57. > :04:58.in the Northern Corries and carried him for

:04:59. > :05:04.Mountain rescuers were flown in by helicopter to help,

:05:05. > :05:08.and the casualty was given medical treatment and airlifted to hospital.

:05:09. > :05:10.Compensation paid out by Police Scotland has reached

:05:11. > :05:18.by the Scottish Conservatives through a freedom of

:05:19. > :05:26.In the year to the end of last March, the force spent almost one

:05:27. > :05:27.point three million pounds in damages claims.

:05:28. > :05:30.A spokesman for Police Scotland said the sum paid out in compensation

:05:31. > :05:33.was a tiny percentage of the annual budget of more than

:05:34. > :05:39.Scottish Labour is rejecting the idea of joining up

:05:40. > :05:41.with their arch-rivals, the SNP, to help defeat

:05:42. > :05:47.Labour say they're "hated" by the SNP,

:05:48. > :05:50.but nationalists say their door is always open to a deal.

:05:51. > :05:52.This comes as a Labour-leaning think-tank said the party was too

:05:53. > :06:04.Our political correspondent Andrew Kerr reports.

:06:05. > :06:12.Remember this man, it will be 20 years in May since Tony Blair swept

:06:13. > :06:17.to power, but now a think tank closely linked with the new Labour

:06:18. > :06:27.movement warns that the party is too weak to win... Posters certainly

:06:28. > :06:32.agree with that analysis. This position in the opinion polls seems

:06:33. > :06:38.to be weaker than in 2015, to that extent we're asking ourselves how

:06:39. > :06:42.badly can they do not whether they have any prospect of winning the

:06:43. > :06:49.election. The idea from the Fabian Society is for the leader, Jeremy

:06:50. > :06:53.Corbyn to win enough MPs to former governing partnership with other

:06:54. > :06:58.parties. If Labour can gain some more MPs, but not get an majority

:06:59. > :07:06.Iniesta think about working with the Lib Dems or the SNP. Winning more

:07:07. > :07:12.Iniesta think about working with the seats might be a distant goal for

:07:13. > :07:17.one former Labour MP who was ousted in 2015, while a partnership with

:07:18. > :07:22.the SNP is ruled out. This is a party who hates the Liberal party,

:07:23. > :07:27.who views the destruction of the Labour Party as their way of gaining

:07:28. > :07:33.independence. -- who hates the Labour Party. The message of

:07:34. > :07:38.solidarity means to take hold. The Conservatives used this to warn

:07:39. > :07:44.about the SNP calling the tune in the 2015 election. The nationalists

:07:45. > :07:49.insist they are ready and waiting in Labour want to come forward. As far

:07:50. > :07:52.as the SMP concerned the door has always been open, but Labour need to

:07:53. > :07:56.as the SMP concerned the door has decide whether staying on their own

:07:57. > :08:00.is more important than forming progressive alliances to oppose the

:08:01. > :08:05.right wing, Tory government that we see just now in Westminster. Labour

:08:06. > :08:12.says it comes down to a straight choice for the SNP, back a Labour

:08:13. > :08:16.government or a Tory one. But, as the Labour think tank says in the

:08:17. > :08:17.polling evidence indicates, Labour in power is still a very distant

:08:18. > :08:19.prospect. The number of oil and gas companies

:08:20. > :08:23.in the UK going out of business is at an all time high,

:08:24. > :08:26.It follows a slump in A report by accountancy firm

:08:27. > :08:36.Moore Stephens said a total of 16 firms became insolvent last year,

:08:37. > :08:39.up from two the year before, Nearly one year on, residents

:08:40. > :08:44.in a flood hit area of Aberdeenshire say they're living in fear it

:08:45. > :08:46.could happen again. Almost one hundred people living

:08:47. > :08:48.in Inverurie and Port Elphinstone had to leave their homes,

:08:49. > :08:51.when the river Don burst Rebecca Curran has been

:08:52. > :09:05.to meet some of them. The residents in Inverurie and Port

:09:06. > :09:11.Elphinstone and it was an unforgettable start to 2016. Heavy

:09:12. > :09:18.rain caused the river to burst its banks and roads tend to leave their

:09:19. > :09:25.homes. The river was getting higher and there was no less tasty or

:09:26. > :09:29.heating so we had to get her out. -- no electricity. Kevin and his family

:09:30. > :09:34.moved back in July, but the past year has been hard. Even when we got

:09:35. > :09:39.back here it took was a while to settle back, especially my son

:09:40. > :09:46.because every bit of rain, he thinks Wiggin to flood again. There's no

:09:47. > :09:51.point of talking to him, you're better letting him cry and sit back

:09:52. > :09:57.to him when he is, and tell him it is only a wee bit of rain, it's not

:09:58. > :10:00.going to happen again. It came careering down here and Dell use, it

:10:01. > :10:08.was like this in arming, as I call it. This woman's home was badly hit

:10:09. > :10:16.and her friend was trapped inside surrounded by rising water. Within

:10:17. > :10:22.minutes the water came up past our ankles and we had to evacuate as

:10:23. > :10:26.well. This is where the water came from, a bank has now been installed

:10:27. > :10:32.to protect the area from a future Lord. Some fear it's not enough.

:10:33. > :10:39.That's all they've done, I think, they need to be doing more

:10:40. > :10:46.especially round by the canal. It could quite easily happen again. No

:10:47. > :10:50.qualms about that. As we building work here continues Aberdeenshire

:10:51. > :10:53.Council says a study to identify that the plug prevention options is

:10:54. > :10:59.underway and is expected to be completed in the summer 2019. --

:11:00. > :11:00.further flood prevention options. Hundreds of diseased or dead trees

:11:01. > :11:02.are to be felled across Aberdeen. The trees include

:11:03. > :11:04.a large number infected Aberdeen City Council says

:11:05. > :11:07.about four hundred trees They're mainly beside roads,

:11:08. > :11:11.but others are in parks, Time now for the latest weather

:11:12. > :11:28.forecast, with Judith. Thank you very much, and a very good

:11:29. > :11:32.evening to you. 2017 has got off to a nice, quiet start, good news if

:11:33. > :11:39.you are heading back to work tomorrow. Here is a picture of lobby

:11:40. > :11:45.hues in the sky. We have gales across the northern isles, they are

:11:46. > :11:52.about to reduce. The weather front with clouds and patches will sink

:11:53. > :12:00.southwards to south of the border. So tomorrow morning it will be dry

:12:01. > :12:06.for both those -- from most of us. Elsewhere, good sunny spells. We

:12:07. > :12:11.could see a touch of frost for the Southern Highlands, it inland

:12:12. > :12:19.Aberdeenshire and across the far north. Fresh to strong North

:12:20. > :12:23.westerly wind. Actually, a lovely day to come across the country,

:12:24. > :12:32.lovely spells of crisp winter sunshine. In the North some cloud

:12:33. > :12:38.but not spoiling things. It does all clear away, the cloud. Elsewhere the

:12:39. > :12:46.cloud will break and we will see some sunshine. Really, a quiet day

:12:47. > :12:52.of weather. It will feel colder tomorrow in Scotland, but winds will

:12:53. > :12:57.be like a cross the board. Into tomorrow evening, a cold night under

:12:58. > :13:03.clearing skies and quickly we will see a sharp frost across the country

:13:04. > :13:08.continuing with one or two showers across Shetland. Elsewhere, dry with

:13:09. > :13:10.light winds and lows of -5 in the Highlands and freezing for the rest

:13:11. > :13:15.of 's. I pressure dominating things Highlands and freezing for the rest

:13:16. > :13:21.on Thursday, this weather front introduces some rain. A cold start,

:13:22. > :13:24.maybe freezing fog patches. Stays cold all day.

:13:25. > :13:30.Our next update is during Breakfast at 6.25am tomorrow morning.
