:00:00. > :00:00.That's Newsnight, starting over on BBC Two.

:00:00. > :00:00.Here, on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.

:00:00. > :00:09.Scottish exports are up across the board -

:00:10. > :00:13.in the UK, to the EU and other international markets.

:00:14. > :00:15.Scottish Government figures show that sales from Scotland to the rest

:00:16. > :00:20.of the UK are four times as big as those to the EU.

:00:21. > :00:30.Here's our business and economy editor, Douglas Fraser.

:00:31. > :00:33.This factory has just hit four-figure sales

:00:34. > :00:38.Trade winds bring orders from all over the world.

:00:39. > :00:43.Most used to go to UK customers, but now most customers are foreign.

:00:44. > :00:48.There is a lot of need in Britain and Europe but we also sell turbines

:00:49. > :01:07.If the US is building walls around it, export could get more difficult.

:01:08. > :01:09.There is a lack of clarity, but when things change, there are also new

:01:10. > :01:10.opportunities. The increase in wind power is one

:01:11. > :01:13.of the reasons why Scotland The total increase in sales

:01:14. > :01:17.in 2015 was around 4%. Of that, ?50 billion

:01:18. > :01:19.was sold to the rest of the United Kingdom,

:01:20. > :01:23.and beyond, the rest of the world, ?29 billion, and within that,

:01:24. > :01:28.?12 billion sold to the rest Viewed from Holyrood,

:01:29. > :01:35.ministers said the figures prove that Scotland must maintain free

:01:36. > :01:39.access to the single market. We appreciate the extent

:01:40. > :01:43.to which our nearest neighbour is very important but that does not

:01:44. > :01:46.mean we should not have an eye on the potential we can have

:01:47. > :01:50.for our economy with the rest of the EU and the worst thing to do

:01:51. > :02:06.would be to jeopardise Viewed from Westminster, ministers

:02:07. > :02:07.say Scottish business and jobs are much more reliant on British

:02:08. > :02:09.markets. Four times as many exports go

:02:10. > :02:12.to the rest of the United Kingdom than go to the EU, but of course

:02:13. > :02:15.the EU is important. Let's focus on our partners

:02:16. > :02:18.and friends in the rest of the UK because that is where the really

:02:19. > :02:21.significant impact on our economy is coming and we should

:02:22. > :02:23.not be doing anything, Most sales to the rest of Britain

:02:24. > :02:27.are services rather than goods. The biggest export figure

:02:28. > :02:29.is whiskey, showing it is the biggest net contributor

:02:30. > :02:34.to Britain's trade position. The biggest export market

:02:35. > :02:39.remains the United States. We are looking for a trade deal

:02:40. > :02:41.to improve the trade All the more important there is a

:02:42. > :02:51.good trade deal. Theresa May visits the White House

:02:52. > :02:54.on Friday and talks trade with President Donald Trump,

:02:55. > :02:56.not a man with a liking A budget debate at Holyrood has

:02:57. > :02:59.ended in stalemate after MSPs were unable to agree tax

:03:00. > :03:02.and spending plans. Opposition parties set

:03:03. > :03:04.out their price for backing the Scottish government's plan,

:03:05. > :03:08.but none of the motions before Here's our political

:03:09. > :03:13.correspondent, Andrew Kerr. A state-of-the-art dummy

:03:14. > :03:20.for training medical staff, as the First Minister announced

:03:21. > :03:22.extra funding to support The Scottish Government is sweating

:03:23. > :03:28.it out in their budget as they cast Labour said the same fate awaits

:03:29. > :03:37.local services and have called Labour are not behaving

:03:38. > :03:43.in a responsible way. They are being destructive and have

:03:44. > :03:49.not actually brought forward any This ?327 million cut in this year's

:03:50. > :03:59.budget will mean more jobs going and even greater pressure

:04:00. > :04:03.on staff and services that They want a penny on the basic rate

:04:04. > :04:10.of income tax but the finance sector warned what would happen

:04:11. > :04:15.if the budget was not supported. It puts all of our public services

:04:16. > :04:20.at risk, crucial public spending, that pays for our teachers

:04:21. > :04:23.and doctors and nurses, and local government employees

:04:24. > :04:26.and emergency services. The Greens and the Conservatives set

:04:27. > :04:31.out their opposing positions on tax. What it delivers is a situation

:04:32. > :04:34.where Scotland becomes the most Either on the right or on the

:04:35. > :04:46.thresholds. There is a wide range of ways

:04:47. > :04:49.in which the Scottish Government And the Liberal Democrat leader said

:04:50. > :04:52.don't expect him to roll over and support it -

:04:53. > :04:55.everyone had to compromise or else. Those who have not lifted

:04:56. > :04:57.their shovels and made an attempt to reach an agreement on this budget

:04:58. > :05:00.will bear the responsibility When it came to the vote,

:05:01. > :05:22.MSPs were not able to agree. So it is budget stalemate here at

:05:23. > :05:26.Holyrood but the first crucial vote is a week tomorrow, and by then

:05:27. > :05:31.ministers will have had to have found some support.

:05:32. > :05:34.Details of a collision involving a US and a Soviet vessel 40 years

:05:35. > :05:37.ago off the west coast of Scotland have emerged in a top

:05:38. > :05:39.secret CIA memo which has just been declassified.

:05:40. > :05:52.Antinuclear protesters protesting against the presence

:05:53. > :06:02.During the Cold War Russian and US subs engaged in a high-stakes game

:06:03. > :06:03.of cat and mouse. Details of one serious

:06:04. > :06:06.encounter have come to light. A top-secret memo sent

:06:07. > :06:08.to the Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in 1974,

:06:09. > :06:10.which has just been declassified by the CIA, revealed a crash

:06:11. > :06:15.between a US and Russian submarine, What we know from the memo is that

:06:16. > :06:21.when this incident took place, the US ballistic missile submarine

:06:22. > :06:26.James Madison was leaving its base here at Holy Loch to head

:06:27. > :06:32.out to sea on patrol. Lying in wait near the mouth

:06:33. > :06:36.of the port, a Soviet submarine hoping to follow it,

:06:37. > :06:39.and it was at that point when the two collided and they both

:06:40. > :06:44.surfaced before the Soviet submarine then once again submerged,

:06:45. > :06:48.and that, as far as we know, It's thought the James Madison

:06:49. > :06:54.suffered minor damage, but the issue experts are now

:06:55. > :06:57.pondering is, how much It would have been a diplomatic

:06:58. > :07:05.incident, had that submarine not been so deep into our home waters

:07:06. > :07:11.that it was an embarrassment really, to the American and British forces,

:07:12. > :07:16.that they can get that close in. The US continued its presence

:07:17. > :07:20.at the base until the Cold War ended in the early '90s,

:07:21. > :07:24.and who knows how many more stories will emerge from one

:07:25. > :07:27.of the most fascinating periods Football, and Celtic equalled

:07:28. > :07:36.the Lisbon Lions' record run of 26 unbeaten domestic games with a 1-0

:07:37. > :07:40.win over St Johnstone to move 22 Elsewhere, Hearts beat Raith Rovers

:07:41. > :07:46.4-2 but only after extra time in their Scottish Cup fourth-round

:07:47. > :07:48.replay at Tynecastle. Hearts now play city rivals and cup

:07:49. > :07:51.holders Hibernian in the next Well, let's get the

:07:52. > :08:03.weather from Judith. Good evening. It wasn't too bad

:08:04. > :08:08.today, we saw the sunshine breaking through and here is a stunning

:08:09. > :08:15.picture sent in these dramatic skies. Tonight it is mainly dry,

:08:16. > :08:20.fairly cloudy, some clear spells at times, windy in coastal areas and

:08:21. > :08:22.cold with a frost developing in parts of southern Scotland,

:08:23. > :08:28.temperatures are already falling here. Tomorrow morning starts off

:08:29. > :08:35.with a cold frost in the South, you can see temperatures not too far off

:08:36. > :08:40.the freezing mark in the Central lowlands. The further north you go

:08:41. > :08:46.the higher the temperatures will be. Still quite brisk winds in the

:08:47. > :08:51.Northern Isles. Through the day we will see brighter and sunnier spells

:08:52. > :08:53.developing across Northern Scotland with south-easterly wind, that is

:08:54. > :08:59.where you will see the best sunshine, generally bright this

:09:00. > :09:04.elsewhere although along the coast we hold onto the south-easterly wind

:09:05. > :09:10.and it will be significantly colder across the UK. Northern Ireland sees

:09:11. > :09:16.a lot of close, a frosty start across much of England but the fog

:09:17. > :09:21.lifts leaving leaden skies and feeling cold. The best chance of

:09:22. > :09:26.sunshine will be along the south coast, and inland parts of Scotland

:09:27. > :09:33.will struggle to two were three degrees, elsewhere around five

:09:34. > :09:38.Celsius, 74 the Northern Isles. A widespread frost forming tomorrow

:09:39. > :09:43.night, a dry picture, winds easing but still quite breezy in coastal

:09:44. > :09:49.areas. They are between low and high pressure but hold on to dry

:09:50. > :09:53.conditions on Friday. The potential for a bit patchy rain into the

:09:54. > :09:55.south-west later in the day, maybe not quite as cold and more in the

:09:56. > :09:56.way of cloud. Our next update is during Breakfast

:09:57. > :10:00.at 6:25am tomorrow. But from everyone on the late

:10:01. > :10:01.team - goodnight. Timeline is the new

:10:02. > :10:04.current affairs show for you.
