:00:36. > :00:37.They are two of Scotland's biggest companies - high-profile
:00:38. > :00:49.And low-profile managers of their customers' money,
:00:50. > :00:52.in the industryboth known as "active investors",
:00:53. > :01:01.This merger shows they are trying to win investors back.
:01:02. > :01:04.Investors have moved away from active investing to passive
:01:05. > :01:17.investing, because maybe they have not seen the performance
:01:18. > :01:19.that justifies the fees, and going to find cheaper alternatatives.
:01:20. > :01:22.After this deal is done, the amount of money being managed
:01:23. > :01:25.by this new investment company will be absolutely colossal -
:01:26. > :01:28.By way of comparison, that is about 20 times the annual
:01:29. > :01:32.budget for the entire Scottish Government.
:01:33. > :01:35.These two Scottish firms are big employers, Standard Life has 5,000
:01:36. > :01:42.Aberdeen's Scottish workforce is 800 strong,
:01:43. > :01:46.but this deal spells trouble for some workers,
:01:47. > :01:51.with the prospect of job losses where the two firms overlap.
:01:52. > :01:54.It will probably result in some job losses.
:01:55. > :01:57.Maybe between the companies it could be as many as 1,000,
:01:58. > :02:00.but that won't all be in Scotland because there's a substantial
:02:01. > :02:05.The fund managers in particular is where we will see some
:02:06. > :02:08.of the effects, and we hope there will be a bigger organisation
:02:09. > :02:13.This merger creates a phone which aims to compete with huge
:02:14. > :02:26.And with money management now big business, it sends a signal that two
:02:27. > :02:28.Scottish firms have ambitions to become a global giant.
:02:29. > :02:31.There have been repeated warnings about the "recruitment crisis"
:02:32. > :02:35.It's an acute problem in rural and remote areas.
:02:36. > :02:38.In the Highlands, the shortage of GPs has led to the health board
:02:39. > :02:40.developing a new approach to out-of-hours care,
:02:41. > :02:44.with highly skilled nurses covering 85,000 patients across a vast area.
:02:45. > :02:47.Our Health Correspondent, Lisa Summers, spent a night shift

:03:09. > :03:14.practitioner Louise and driver Steve and trainee Kerry are on the road.
