:00:10. > :00:11.because the law didn't recognise controlling or coercive
:00:12. > :00:17.But now the Scottish Government is to create a new law to deal
:00:18. > :00:21.with the problem of psychological or emotional abuse in relationships.
:00:22. > :00:26.This report by our home affairs correspondent,
:00:27. > :00:31.Reevel Alderson, begins with the testimony of one survivor.
:00:32. > :00:34.For seven years, Nicola was the victim of psychological
:00:35. > :00:40.Difficult to report and prove, it was insidious and damaging.
:00:41. > :00:50.I was living in terror, intense fear, intense anxiety.
:00:51. > :00:52.Not depression in the way people experience depression,
:00:53. > :00:57.but extremely unhappy and constantly, constantly on edge
:00:58. > :01:00.and in fear of danger and the consequences of not
:01:01. > :01:05.complying with the behaviour the abuser expected of me.
:01:06. > :01:08.Her abuser was arrested, but there was no evidence against him,
:01:09. > :01:13.There was financial abuse, controlling the finances in a way
:01:14. > :01:22.Controlling the friends that I saw, the way that I spoke,
:01:23. > :01:28.It was complete control of every aspect of my life.
:01:29. > :01:35.the first woman met survivors of abuse.
:01:36. > :01:40.For the first time, this bill aims to define it as a crime,
:01:41. > :01:46.The bill talks about a series of incidents, which would be
:01:47. > :01:50.If you are subject to that psychological abuse,
:01:51. > :01:53.the impact on your life can be just as severe as somebody
:01:54. > :02:00.It is important the legal system recognises that.
:02:01. > :02:02.The bill has been welcomed by survivor's groups as
:02:03. > :02:08.We know from young women they struggle to notice,
:02:09. > :02:13.recognise and address patterns of coercive control and domestic
:02:14. > :02:21.This legislation is important, because it addresses the whole
:02:22. > :02:24.pattern and spectrum of domestic abuse, including other forms
:02:25. > :02:32.The Government says it knows legislation won't end
:02:33. > :02:35.the scourge of domestic abuse, but it is hoped the bill will be
:02:36. > :02:42.Police divers have started to investigate five sections
:02:43. > :02:45.of the Monklands Canal in the search for a local girl
:02:46. > :02:51.An operation began last week to scan a section of the waterway
:02:52. > :02:55.in an attempt to find the remains of 11-year-old Moira Anderson.
:02:56. > :02:57.A convicted paedophile is suspected of her murder.
:02:58. > :03:08.This is difficult and highly skilled work.
:03:09. > :03:11.There is two metres of silt and a metre of water above.
:03:12. > :03:14.They are working in small teams because you just cannot be
