:00:33. > :00:35.The event consciously timed to coincide with a similar

:00:36. > :00:47.This shocking event should serve to remind us of the importance

:00:48. > :00:51.of holding firm to our humanity and defending our democracy.

:00:52. > :00:55.The First Minister arrived for questions knowing that all had

:00:56. > :01:01.Above all, we stand in solidarity with London, a vibrant, diverse,

:01:02. > :01:08.wonderful city that will never be cowed by mindless acts of violence.

:01:09. > :01:14.Terrorists seek to undermine our values and destroy our way of life.

:01:15. > :01:20.Whatever our disagreements, in this chamber or any other,

:01:21. > :01:23.we stand united in our core values of democracy, human rights

:01:24. > :01:31.These values are strong, and they will endure.

:01:32. > :01:36.Rivals applauded each other, determined to project

:01:37. > :01:41.The First Minister stressed there was no intelligence suggesting

:01:42. > :01:45.a specific threat to Scotland, and she urged vigilance

:01:46. > :01:51.That response does involve a substantial uplift

:01:52. > :01:55.in armed officers on duty, and also a configuration

:01:56. > :01:58.of resources to ensure that there has been a high-profile

:01:59. > :02:03.non-armed police presence across the country.

:02:04. > :02:05.Ruth Davidson praised the police and security services

:02:06. > :02:11.Yesterday a coward killed three innocent people and injured many

:02:12. > :02:14.more in an attempt to attack the symbol of our

:02:15. > :02:18.His attack on our values failed as he died, while paramedics

:02:19. > :02:20.demonstrated what our civilised society is as they

:02:21. > :02:34.And also it warned that there should be no backlash against Muslims.

:02:35. > :02:38.This cannot and must not turn into a war on any one community.

:02:39. > :02:40.Bringing people together must be part of the solution

:02:41. > :02:47.The lasting injury that some people wish to inflict upon us

:02:48. > :02:51.all is to destroy the empathy and solidarity which our society

:02:52. > :02:55.depends upon, so we must all be united in expressing and building

:02:56. > :03:00.that empathy and solidarity, in particular challenging those

:03:01. > :03:02.who would seek to blame, stigmatise and alienate people

:03:03. > :03:09.Nicola Sturgeon vigorously endorsed that, reflecting

:03:10. > :03:16.Finally, Willie Rennie recalled his time as an MP walking

:03:17. > :03:18.to work over Westminster Bridge, then a scene of splendour, yesterday

:03:19. > :03:28.I don't think I will be able to walk that route again without thinking

:03:29. > :03:38.The three people who died, perhaps some were tourists taking pictures.

:03:39. > :03:44.Parliament moved to debate other topics, hospitals,

:03:45. > :03:49.care of the elderly, mundane, yes, defiantly so.

:03:50. > :04:04.A determination to maintain democracy, to carry on.

:04:05. > :04:09.Today's tributes at Holyrood reflected events at Westminster,

:04:10. > :04:12.where MPs returned to the House of Commons after yesterday's attack.

:04:13. > :04:15.Here's our political correspondent Nick Eardley.

:04:16. > :04:29.Westminster was quiet this afternoon.

:04:30. > :04:37.But this city has faced attack before, and always

:04:38. > :04:44.got back to business, with heavy hearts, but defiant.

:04:45. > :04:47.A minute's silence from politicians, followed by calls for unity.

:04:48. > :04:54.As generations have done before us and as future generations

:04:55. > :05:06.No terrorist outrage is representative of any faith

:05:07. > :05:08.or of any faith community, and we recommit ourselves

:05:09. > :05:12.to strengthening the bonds of tolerance and understanding.

:05:13. > :05:17.Cherishing what happened here yesterday, with staff coming

:05:18. > :05:20.together who were terrified and frightened, all supporting each

:05:21. > :05:23.other, and that in itself is a way to say to terrorism that it

:05:24. > :05:27.Defiance in tribute, but also reflection,

:05:28. > :05:32.on the innocent victims and how Westminster starts to move on.

:05:33. > :05:36.The sister of a police officer, who none of us really know

:05:37. > :05:41.what they have to go out to do everyday in a uniform,

:05:42. > :05:45.and the sad fact is that somebody lost their life yesterday predicting

:05:46. > :05:49.so that we can come back to work today.

:05:50. > :05:54.What has been really heartening the support there has been,

:05:55. > :05:57.and the fact that we have gone back to work today, and carried

:05:58. > :06:00.on as normal, and that means that anybody who seeks to bring down

:06:01. > :06:05.On the day, people are very determined, often very calm,

:06:06. > :06:07.and there is quite a lot of camaraderie looking outreach

:06:08. > :06:11.other, but it is often the next day and the days after that that it

:06:12. > :06:13.sinks in, and certainly what you could see today was that

:06:14. > :06:16.people were almost more shaken today than yesterday, because the

:06:17. > :06:23.different what if scenarios started to run through people's minds.

:06:24. > :06:25.Tonight, some of the streets around the centre of British

:06:26. > :06:28.A political village under wider city getting back

:06:29. > :06:37.to business, hurting, yes, cowed, no.

:06:38. > :06:42.A pilot who admitted preparing to fly a passenger jet

:06:43. > :06:44.from Glasgow Airport to America while more than double the legal

:06:45. > :06:47.alcohol limit has been jailed for ten months.

:06:48. > :06:50.He's the second member of the plane's crew to be jailed.

:06:51. > :07:00.Willie Johnston reports from Paisley Sheriff Court.

:07:01. > :07:02.The pilot here after his arrest last summer, along

:07:03. > :07:04.with fellow United Airines pilot Carlos.

:07:05. > :07:07.They were due to fly a Boeing 747 with a passengers on board

:07:08. > :07:15.from Glasgow to Newark on the 27th of August last year.

:07:16. > :07:20.They arrived at the airport early in the morning

:07:21. > :07:23.Security staff smell alcohol on the pilot's breath,

:07:24. > :07:30.Police removed them both from the flight.

:07:31. > :07:32.The co-pilot was seven times over the legal limit flying

:07:33. > :07:35.and was jailed for ten months seven two weeks ago.

:07:36. > :07:37.Today Paul Grebenc was also jailed after admitting intending to fly

:07:38. > :07:47.The test found 42 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

:07:48. > :07:52.Passing sentence, the judge said there were mitigating circumstances,

:07:53. > :07:55.including difficulties in Paul Grebenc's private life,

:07:56. > :07:58.but he was experienced pilot who must've been aware

:07:59. > :08:05.of the dangers of flying under the influence of alcohol.

:08:06. > :08:07.He had also flouted his employers' guidelines and ignored

:08:08. > :08:10.what they regarded as a safe eight hour gap between drinking

:08:11. > :08:15.After the hearing, Paul Grebenc's wife, herself a pilot

:08:16. > :08:21.with the US Air Force, left caught without comment.

:08:22. > :08:29.Two other pilots were arrested last July before they were due to fly

:08:30. > :08:40.They are also accused of being over the legal limit for alcohol,

:08:41. > :08:48.but denied the charges, and will appear again in April.

:08:49. > :08:51.Police have completed their search of the Monkland canal

:08:52. > :08:53.in Lanarkshire, but have found no human remains in their search

:08:54. > :08:59.The schoolgirl went missing in Coatbridge in 1957.

:09:00. > :09:02.A number of bones were recovered, but they've been found

:09:03. > :09:08.The Education Secretary John Swinney has said the way schools are run

:09:09. > :09:11.must change if standards are to improve.

:09:12. > :09:14.He also said it was worrying that some didn't accept

:09:15. > :09:17.But critics fear councils could be undermined.

:09:27. > :09:31.Both literacy and numeracy are not good enough and helping more

:09:32. > :09:35.children from disadvantaged areas scored top marks is

:09:52. > :09:53.He hopes giving parents and schools more help but some

:09:54. > :09:57.There is a strong body of opinion which does not accept

:09:58. > :10:00.What is worrying is that body of opinion is from

:10:01. > :10:05.I want to be clear that my opinion, the view of the Scottish

:10:06. > :10:09.Looking at the data, the status quo is not an option.

:10:10. > :10:14.Change is needed, change is happening and more change is coming.

:10:15. > :10:17.John Swinney may have a mild manner but the government

:10:18. > :10:19.could have a real fight on its hands.

:10:20. > :10:25.Some in local government will resist any attempt

:10:26. > :10:28.Some headteachers are worried about additional

:10:29. > :10:34.I'm interested to hear what it is headteachers want to do

:10:35. > :10:39.Our members are saying what they want is proper

:10:40. > :10:43.support, they want systems which are not bureaucratic.

:10:44. > :10:53.could also empower parents. parents thinks in heads

:10:54. > :10:55.The attitudes and values of the headteacher, that dictates

:10:56. > :10:58.how the school works with parents, because it trickles down.

:10:59. > :11:02.We hope what we will see is an empowerment of headteachers

:11:03. > :11:05.to work more effectively with the parent body.

:11:06. > :11:08.John Swinney accept improvements will take time.

:11:09. > :11:14.Other parties point out the SNP has been in charge for almost ten years.

:12:14. > :12:24.morning. Chilly initially, winds initially left. Not quite as cold in
