:00:09. > :00:12.The shortage of carers in Scotland is reaching crisis point.

:00:13. > :00:15.The organisation that represents independent care providers

:00:16. > :00:18.says nine out of ten of its members can't fill vacancies.

:00:19. > :00:21.It comes on the day figures from England showed 900 social

:00:22. > :00:25.care workers there leave their jobs every day.

:00:26. > :00:27.Our health correspondent Lisa Summers has been to meet

:00:28. > :00:50.a couple from East Lothian who are struggling to cope.

:00:51. > :01:00.Mary Turnbull is 78. The former schoolteacher was diagnosed with

:01:01. > :01:05.dementia five years ago. Mary was the strong one in the family, the

:01:06. > :01:10.homemaker, who did all the cooking. Now the roles are reversed. But it

:01:11. > :01:13.certainly isolated, you have nobody to talk to, the buck stops with me

:01:14. > :01:20.basically. Who is the? Her husband Michael does have some care in place

:01:21. > :01:24.but despite offering contacting 60 local providers, can't get the help

:01:25. > :01:28.he needs. The fact I have lost a lot of care during the week means I'm

:01:29. > :01:33.doing a lot of caring in the evening, seven days a week and I

:01:34. > :01:39.have to take upstairs, undress her, watch her, pushed her in her

:01:40. > :01:44.pyjamas, but as a bed. Scottish care same manner to ten of their members

:01:45. > :01:49.report struggling to recruit staff, say care homes have been forced to

:01:50. > :01:58.close with the same problems in the community. If you are able to afford

:01:59. > :02:00.a pound or a pound 50 ball in a supermarket, compared to the

:02:01. > :02:05.challenging and difficult experience caring for somebody, however

:02:06. > :02:08.rewarding, people have to pay mortgages, with bills rising and

:02:09. > :02:13.exercising that choice and giving up their job of care in order to earn a

:02:14. > :02:17.living or a better living. The government says it is trying to

:02:18. > :02:20.encourage people into the care industry by introducing the living

:02:21. > :02:25.wage but it feeds into a bigger picture of problems with integration

:02:26. > :02:28.of health and social care and hospitals. There are too believable

:02:29. > :02:38.and able to get home despite being well enough to be because care

:02:39. > :02:43.packages are not fair for them. -- not there for them. Michael says the

:02:44. > :02:47.care they do receive is invaluable. It gets much needed respite and that

:02:48. > :02:50.allows him to enjoy the time he spends with Mary.

:02:51. > :02:52.A gymnastics coach who represented Scotland in the 2010

:02:53. > :02:58.Commonwealth Games is to stand trial on six sex charges

:02:59. > :03:05.25 year old Ryan McKee, from Kinning Park in Glasgow

:03:06. > :03:07.is alleged to have "engaged in sexual activity" with the girls

:03:08. > :03:15.The offences are alleged to have taken place

:03:16. > :03:25.Mr McKee denies the charges and is due to stand trial in August.

:03:26. > :03:27.Decommissioning one of the most important oilfields in the North Sea

:03:28. > :03:31.was always going to be a major task - not just the scale of the job,

:03:32. > :03:35.Plans for the famous Brent field - which include leaving the legs

:03:36. > :03:40.of the platforms in the sea - has angered environmentalists.

:03:41. > :03:43.However the first platform is about to be taken apart and it's

:03:44. > :03:51.a job for the world's biggest construction vessel,

:03:52. > :03:57.We are in Rotterdam, the largest harbour in Europe and currently

:03:58. > :04:04.docked here is the pioneering spirit. This shape is huge. It's the

:04:05. > :04:10.length of six jumbo jets, and by many measures, this is the largest

:04:11. > :04:16.vessel in the world. And it will soon head out into the North Sea to

:04:17. > :04:21.undertake an incredibly complex bit of engineering work, the lifting of

:04:22. > :04:26.the top side of the platform in the Brent Field, the Brent D. We have

:04:27. > :04:32.now made our way into the pioneering Spirit and I'm joined by Alistair

:04:33. > :04:39.from Shell. Why did you decide to lift the top side in its entirety?

:04:40. > :04:43.Because it's fundamentally safer and more efficient, to lift these big,

:04:44. > :04:50.compensated platforms, they are nearly 40 years old, they have been

:04:51. > :04:51.modified and changed a lot over the years so to bring the Montr al will

:04:52. > :04:56.years so to bring the Montreal will begin dismantle them in a more

:04:57. > :05:00.controlled way, it saves a lot of risk and is fundamentally cheaper as

:05:01. > :05:09.well. Some environmental groups are worried about the wider proposals,

:05:10. > :05:14.they think that Shell are in breach of international law, is that a

:05:15. > :05:20.blow? We are grateful to those groups who have contributed, we will

:05:21. > :05:23.sit down and share more insight and knowledge with whoever needs to

:05:24. > :05:28.wherever appropriate, that's the whole idea of public consultation,

:05:29. > :05:35.to get comments. We will always comply with the law. This project,

:05:36. > :05:43.ten years in the planning, another ten years to go, but the lift

:05:44. > :05:46.itself, the key moment as Brent D is lifted off its legs, it will take

:05:47. > :05:48.itself, the key moment as Brent D is all of ten seconds and is due to

:05:49. > :05:51.take place in a few weeks' time. College lecturers across Scotland

:05:52. > :05:54.have voted to take strike action in a dispute over variations

:05:55. > :05:56.in pay between different A deal to settle a strike last year

:05:57. > :06:00.was intended to resolve the issue but the union claims no progress has

:06:01. > :06:03.been made since then. A huge dump of illegal waste

:06:04. > :06:06.on the outskirsts of Glasgow is being blamed for an infestation

:06:07. > :06:11.of flies in the area. Residents of Newton Mearns,

:06:12. > :06:13.who want the rubbish removed were told it

:06:14. > :06:15.would take time to deal with, as it was being treated

:06:16. > :06:17.as a "crime scene". Our reporter Rebecca Curran sent

:06:18. > :06:30.this report earlier. By the council and the environment

:06:31. > :06:40.protection agency say tackling this issue is their top priority. They

:06:41. > :06:46.say residents were noticing a fly infestation in the area sometime

:06:47. > :06:49.ago. None of them wanted to go on camera today but they told me at

:06:50. > :06:54.ago. None of them wanted to go on times there were swarms of 30 or 40

:06:55. > :06:58.flies in their home, some have been making their own nets to put over

:06:59. > :07:05.Windows and doors and others have reported feeling unwell. The problem

:07:06. > :07:08.lies on the land behind these gates, what we now know is that a large

:07:09. > :07:14.amount of illegal waste was dumped here, it cannot be confirmed exactly

:07:15. > :07:21.what it is but say that due to the volume and variety of it, it will

:07:22. > :07:25.take some time to remove. I spoke with East Renfrewshire Council

:07:26. > :07:29.earlier and they had an update on when that operation might get

:07:30. > :07:34.underway. We are hopeful it will commence tomorrow morning and if

:07:35. > :07:38.not, very soon after. In conjunction with perhaps some pest control

:07:39. > :07:43.activity to limit the areas, it could take several days. It just

:07:44. > :07:51.depends on how quickly the material can be removed. The company say they

:07:52. > :07:53.have devoted resources to getting the area cleaned up and catching

:07:54. > :07:56.those responsible, this is now a the area cleaned up and catching

:07:57. > :08:00.criminal investigation. A representative of the landowner who

:08:01. > :08:04.hopes to demolish this site and build a retirement village say it

:08:05. > :08:09.was leased to a third party at the time. Authorities have thanked the

:08:10. > :08:13.local community here that their patients but having spoken to many

:08:14. > :08:16.of them today, it seems that that patients is quickly running out.

:08:17. > :08:18.The National Secular Society is calling for the monks

:08:19. > :08:21.who make Buckfast, which has been linked to violence in Scotland,

:08:22. > :08:23.to have their charitable status removed - claiming

:08:24. > :08:27.The Abbey Trust, which made nearly ?9 million

:08:28. > :08:33.from sales of the drink last year - say it's surprised

:08:34. > :08:36.The Charity Commission says it will "assess the information".

:08:37. > :08:39.A ceremony in Glasgow has honoured a soldier who sacrificed his life

:08:40. > :08:44.Lieutenant Donald Mackintosh was 21 when he led a company

:08:45. > :08:51.of men at the Battle of Arras in France.

:08:52. > :08:54.He was wounded as they advanced on an enemy trench -

:08:55. > :08:55.but despite that, he encouraged his men

:08:56. > :08:58.He later died and was posthumously awarded

:08:59. > :09:12.He was just a supreme example of what the human spirit, and all those

:09:13. > :09:18.who fought with him and died with him, is. They found they were able

:09:19. > :09:27.to do in the most appalling conditions of battle.

:09:28. > :09:28.That's how the club's managing director has described plans

:09:29. > :09:30.for a purpose-built training ground of their own.

:09:31. > :09:32.The ?4 million for the project is coming from two

:09:33. > :09:37.well-known benefactors as Kheredine Idessane reports.

:09:38. > :09:42.Plenty to smile about nowadays, as if a top six finish wasn't enough,

:09:43. > :09:48.now they are breaking new ground, their first ever dedicated training

:09:49. > :09:54.Company. Our big day is this in the history of this couple.? One of the

:09:55. > :09:58.biggest. Without question, I don't think we will be able to answer

:09:59. > :10:03.until we are able to see the benefit of the training facility for the

:10:04. > :10:07.next 20, 25 years. Transformation is probably the best way to describe

:10:08. > :10:14.it. How does a club with a turnover of under ?3.5 million and a profit

:10:15. > :10:18.of just over 200,000 built a bespoke training academy for four million?

:10:19. > :10:23.Thanks to one of the wealthiest fans. They would build the passivity

:10:24. > :10:33.and lease it back, ending their past as nomads. Sometimes, it is

:10:34. > :10:37.difficult to find something, this example is its holiday weekend,

:10:38. > :10:42.places are closed, we need to find somewhere else, it's very difficult.

:10:43. > :10:48.This will solve the problems for the players as well to have that base.

:10:49. > :10:52.As anyone who's tried to buy a house in the West End of Glasgow will the

:10:53. > :10:57.new, property and land are very expensive. So don't expect the new

:10:58. > :11:00.training facility to perform anywhere near Firhill when it's

:11:01. > :11:04.built on a couple of years' time. Before club who almost went out of

:11:05. > :11:09.business 20 years ago and have now secured their first top six finish

:11:10. > :11:10.in the top division Saint Martin 81, the future could scarcely look

:11:11. > :11:27.brighter. It's been quite a wet day of weather

:11:28. > :11:31.across much of the Northwest. We can only offer a gradual improvement

:11:32. > :11:38.through the night. That batch of rain sinks southwards into Argyll

:11:39. > :11:42.and Bute, through the Glasgow area, and to Dumfries Galloway through

:11:43. > :11:46.the early hours. Across the North and east in Scotland, there will be

:11:47. > :11:53.some clear spells and a scattering of showers. A fairly windy night,

:11:54. > :12:01.touching gale force at times across the Western Isles. But irritably

:12:02. > :12:05.mould might instore also. But the early risers, still some rain

:12:06. > :12:09.affecting parts of the West and south-west, gradually clearing

:12:10. > :12:15.through the morning, if you're heading out, expect leaden skies

:12:16. > :12:20.across the south of the country, with some rain lingering to which

:12:21. > :12:23.Dumfries Galloway, try and brighter feeding into which Argyll

:12:24. > :12:25.and Bute and crossed the central brighter feeding into which Argyll

:12:26. > :12:32.belt, passed through showers affecting the Western Isles and much

:12:33. > :12:34.of the Northwest Highlands and Northern Isles is wealth of bright

:12:35. > :12:41.and sunny spells to anything in between. As we go through tomorrow,

:12:42. > :12:44.this weather front to the south continues to track its way through

:12:45. > :12:49.much of England and Wales, by the time it reaches the far south of

:12:50. > :12:55.England, nothing more than one or two spits and spots of rain. Across

:12:56. > :12:59.Northern Ireland and Scotland, bright spells and a scattering of

:13:00. > :13:06.showers, again, fairly chilly feel in exposure to his brisk winds.

:13:07. > :13:12.Showers becoming fewer and further between tomorrow evening. By

:13:13. > :13:14.Thursday, fairly frequent showers affecting parts of the west of the

:13:15. > :13:25.UK. Still on the chilly side. We are back tomorrow morning. Good

:13:26. > :13:28.night.
