:00:00. > :00:00.We're back with the late news at ten.

:00:00. > :00:09.Now on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.

:00:10. > :00:14.Calls are to be made for police officers to be armed in the wake

:00:15. > :00:16.of the terror attack in Westminster on Thursday.

:00:17. > :00:18.Five people died, including one police officer.

:00:19. > :00:20.The issue will be on the minds of rank-and-file officers

:00:21. > :00:22.at the Scottish Police Federation Conference on Tuesday,

:00:23. > :00:25.where it's expected there will be an emergency debate on the issue.

:00:26. > :00:38.The terror attack on Westminster shocked all of us. But the death of

:00:39. > :00:45.a serving police officer brought home the dangers of the job. It has

:00:46. > :00:51.raised the question on many officers' might as to what they need

:00:52. > :00:55.to do not just to protect the public but themselves as well. Now there is

:00:56. > :00:59.expected to be an emergency debate on the subject at the Police

:01:00. > :01:01.Federation conference. I would be surprised that elevates the not

:01:02. > :01:05.bring forward the number of discussions given the events that

:01:06. > :01:09.took place in London and that could be questions about arming resources,

:01:10. > :01:16.that will feature in that discussion. I would be surprised if

:01:17. > :01:19.there is not a view expressed by many that more police officers

:01:20. > :01:24.should be armed as a consequence of these events. There is a broad

:01:25. > :01:28.church of opinion but all agree on one thing. Some have very polarised

:01:29. > :01:32.views on the subject, but ultimately, it comes down to the

:01:33. > :01:35.question of the police service is expected to keep everyone else says,

:01:36. > :01:41.who will keep the police officer said? It is a controversial issue.

:01:42. > :01:44.Three years ago, armed officers were turning up the incidents when there

:01:45. > :01:49.was no threat to buy. The policy changed. White mac but last year,

:01:50. > :01:53.because the terror threat was severe, the number of officers that

:01:54. > :01:54.could carry a gun was increased to 400. The Scottish Government told us

:01:55. > :02:18.it was a matter properly Scotland. The authority to carry guns

:02:19. > :02:21.reviewed quarterly by the Chief Constable. It varies according to

:02:22. > :02:23.the level of threat that we face as a country. Suzanne Allan, Reporting

:02:24. > :02:25.Scotland. A 54-year-old woman

:02:26. > :02:27.has died after a fire A 78-year-old man was treated

:02:28. > :02:35.for the effects of smoke. The Holyrood Environment Committee

:02:36. > :02:38.says there's an "alarming distrust" between organisations

:02:39. > :02:40.tackling wildlife crime. It says there are clear tensions

:02:41. > :02:44.between groups like the RSPB Our rural affairs correspondent

:02:45. > :03:00.Kevin Keane reports. Persecution is perhaps the most

:03:01. > :03:03.high-profile world of crime in Scotland, these birds fall victim to

:03:04. > :03:08.criminals and for each one found dead, there is an outcry. Holyrood's

:03:09. > :03:12.Environment Committee said it found alarming distrust between some

:03:13. > :03:17.members of the Partnership For Action Against Wildlife Crime. We

:03:18. > :03:23.are not just pointing the finger at the RSPB of course, if you look at

:03:24. > :03:27.the SVGA, the landowners, it is great that we are seeing more

:03:28. > :03:31.condemning of such activities, but we also need full cooperation with

:03:32. > :03:35.Police Scotland, proactive cooperation in order to move forward

:03:36. > :03:41.on this. The committee wants relationships to be strengthened.

:03:42. > :03:43.The RSPB has welcomed many initiatives taken by successive

:03:44. > :03:47.The RSPB has welcomed many Scottish governments over many, many

:03:48. > :03:50.years, we are following the protocols to the letter, so I am

:03:51. > :03:53.actually disappointed that the committee appears to have got the

:03:54. > :03:57.impression that we are doing otherwise. The Scottish Government

:03:58. > :04:01.has said it recognises there will be tensions but it called for unity.

:04:02. > :04:04.Kevin Keane, Reporting Scotland. A huge night ahead for

:04:05. > :04:06.under pressure Scotland manager Gordon Strachan

:04:07. > :04:08.and the national team. Within the hour they will kick

:04:09. > :04:10.off against Slovenia Our senior football reporter

:04:11. > :04:19.Chris McLaughlin has the very Well, it is familiar territory for

:04:20. > :04:23.the Scotland fans turning up to the national stadium, here this evening.

:04:24. > :04:27.Once again in terms of qualification it did win or bust, defeat this

:04:28. > :04:32.evening would all but ensure that Scotland have failed to qualify for

:04:33. > :04:38.their tenth major tournament and evil. In terms of the news, well,

:04:39. > :04:43.Gordon Strachan's two best players play arguably at left back, so he is

:04:44. > :04:48.moving Celtic's Kieran Tierney to this evening. His clubmate Leigh

:04:49. > :04:52.Griffiths starts up front. Not a big fan of the big guys up front, I

:04:53. > :04:57.think we play the ball on the ground a lot, so play with some pace and

:04:58. > :05:02.get in behind, good call. If we get beat tonight we can go home and not

:05:03. > :05:05.bother coming up next year. So, make or break for Scotland but also for

:05:06. > :05:10.Gordon Strachan, the manager, many believed he would go after the 3-0

:05:11. > :05:15.defeat away to the party. Some thought he would lose his job after

:05:16. > :05:19.the defeat away to England, it is highly unlikely he would stay on

:05:20. > :05:23.after three defeats in a row and two field qualifying campaigns.

:05:24. > :05:25.Eve Muirhead and her rink have won the bronze medal

:05:26. > :05:27.at the World Curling Championship in Beijing.

:05:28. > :05:29.The Scots team beat Sweden in a 6-4 thriller.

:05:30. > :05:32.They have also qualified as Team GB for next year's

:05:33. > :05:38.A dry evening and night for much of Scotland with long clear spells.

:05:39. > :05:41.Lows will be widely down to 2 or 3 Celsius but closer

:05:42. > :05:44.There'll be a few mist patches forming by morning.

:05:45. > :05:47.It'll be a cold start to Monday but then dry with plenty

:05:48. > :05:54.It won't be quite as warm as today with highs of 13 to 15 Celsius.

:05:55. > :05:57.Our next update's just after the ten o'clock news.

:05:58. > :06:00.Until then, from everyone on the team here in Glasgow, enjoy

:06:01. > :06:16.For the first time this year, the temperature reached 20 Celsius, the

:06:17. > :06:20.highest recorded in Highland Scotland, lovely picture from

:06:21. > :06:21.earlier on. We have seen more cloud around
