:00:30. > :00:40.Legion Festival of Remembrance, we pay tribute to members of the

:02:13. > :02:17.Remembrance weekend we honour the memory of all those who gave their

:02:17. > :02:23.lives in the service of their country. In the 12 months since

:02:23. > :02:29.last year's Festival, 52 members of the British Armed Forces have lost

:02:29. > :02:34.their lives, many others have been seriously injured. The work of the

:02:34. > :02:38.Royal British Legion is more important than ever. So please

:02:38. > :02:42.welcome the National and Branch Standards of the Royal British

:02:42. > :02:45.Legion, the Royal British Legion Scotland, the Legion's overseas

:02:45. > :02:55.branches and representatives of the ex-service and civilian

:02:55. > :03:03.

:03:03. > :03:06.The Union Flag bearer for the third year in succession is John Grimes

:03:06. > :03:11.from South Wales, followed by the National Standard Bearer in the

:03:11. > :03:18.Youth section and women's section and the Scotland National Bearer.

:03:18. > :03:24.The cadet banners representing 14,000 sea cadets in the UK, 46,000

:03:24. > :03:30.army cadets and 46,000 air cadets, too.

:03:30. > :03:34.Here we have the first of 109 Standard Bearer representing 2,500

:03:34. > :03:38.branches of the Legion across the country and overseas. These are the

:03:38. > :03:48.branches that provide the vital support for people in their local

:03:48. > :03:57.

:03:57. > :04:02.communities and a meeting place for These numbers are reminder that the

:04:02. > :04:06.Legion is one of Britain's biggest membership organisations with

:04:06. > :04:11.360,000 members, including the women's section.

:04:11. > :04:16.These are the people with all of their friends and colleagues who

:04:16. > :04:20.raise �136 million for the Legion last year and there is a Falklands

:04:20. > :04:25.veteran, Garrison Sergeant Major in charge of the precision and drill

:04:25. > :04:30.of this event. With us too are the ex-service

:04:30. > :04:35.associations, the South Atlantic Medal Association, Steven Kay

:04:35. > :04:38.representing the Falklands Falklands receipt vans, the Royal

:04:38. > :04:45.Marines associations, the Royal engineers association here, too.

:04:45. > :04:50.Brian Simm is representing them. The Royal Air Force Association,

:04:50. > :04:55.the Royal Ulster Constabulary George Cross Association, the

:04:55. > :05:05.Merchant Navy and Bomber Command Association represented by by Ron

:05:05. > :05:18.

:05:18. > :05:22.I was nearly killed three, in the course of one battle

:05:22. > :05:24.Once a year, I think it's quite good to have a focus,

:05:24. > :05:31.to think of the people who weren't so lucky.

:05:31. > :05:34.The chief achievement of the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards

:05:34. > :05:37.was the taking of Tumbledown Mountain,

:05:37. > :05:40.which was the final, decisive battle of the Falklands War.

:05:40. > :05:44.It was fought at night, in poor visibility

:05:44. > :05:47.with close-quarter infantry action, driving snow showers,

:05:47. > :05:51.and it went on for hours and was very fiercely contested.

:05:51. > :05:53.We were moving up through the crags,

:05:53. > :05:57.and we came under intense enemy fire.

:05:57. > :06:00.The two forward assault platoons were taking casualties

:06:00. > :06:04.and, as the fighting went on and on,- the toll began to mount.

:06:04. > :06:07.I got informed over the radio that the platoon sergeant

:06:07. > :06:12.had been shot and he was badly wounded.

:06:12. > :06:14.My father was shot in the thigh

:06:15. > :06:18.and then subsequently was shot in the chest,

:06:18. > :06:22.and that was the wound which ultimately cost him his life.

:06:22. > :06:25.He was doing what any soldier would do, you know,

:06:25. > :06:28.committing a selfless act for the great of others.

:06:28. > :06:31.It was a complete shock because John was a leader of men,

:06:31. > :06:35.and we were depending on John to lead us up that hill,

:06:35. > :06:39.but you had to get on with it. You had to safeguard yourself

:06:39. > :06:42.and the remainder of the guys that were still fighting.

:06:42. > :06:45.We'd been battling literary for hours,

:06:45. > :06:48.and then the situation suddenly changed,

:06:48. > :06:51.and we found ourselves - there were only seven of us by this stage -

:06:51. > :06:53.at the top of Tumbledown,

:06:53. > :06:56.looking down and seeing the lights of Stanley in the distance.

:06:56. > :06:59.Almost to that moment,we were engaged with automatic fire.

:06:59. > :07:03.Your body in these things, you can't- move as fast as your brain can,

:07:03. > :07:05.and I heard one chap get hit,

:07:05. > :07:12.and then another one, and then it was my turn.

:07:12. > :07:14.You know, my father, from what people have said,

:07:14. > :07:17.was a very good soldier.

:07:17. > :07:19.Ultimately, how you command your men

:07:19. > :07:21.is the way that you'll be remembered,

:07:22. > :07:24.and 30 years on from the Falklands,

:07:24. > :07:27.that is the way that he is remembered.

:07:27. > :07:29.I do think about them every day,

:07:29. > :07:31.but the Remembrance Service brings it all back

:07:31. > :07:33.and you think about everyone that has lost loved ones,

:07:33. > :07:37.including the enemy, because we killed their sons as well.

:07:37. > :07:47.That will live with me for ever.

:07:47. > :07:51.

:07:51. > :07:51.This

:07:55. > :08:00.This year, 2012, has brought the 30th anniversary of the Falklands

:08:00. > :08:05.campaign and for some, as we know, the experience is still vivid. We

:08:05. > :08:08.just heard from Alasdair Mitchell and Thomas McInnes about the

:08:08. > :08:14.challenging conditions and sorrow of losing comrades. They both join

:08:14. > :08:22.us now, accompanied by three pipers from the Scots Guards, Falklands

:08:22. > :08:30.veterans, Pipe Major Steven Duffy and Pipe Major Peter Macinnes and

:08:30. > :08:40.they play The Crags of Tumbledown Mountain, a piece written on the

:14:30. > :14:38.have known military life and since 2009 it's been a home for men and

:14:38. > :14:48.women. The warmest welcome, once again to the Festival, to the

:15:24. > :15:33.Hall. Their combined ages this evening,

:15:33. > :15:43.1,428 and their years ever service 319 between them.

:15:44. > :15:49.Led by sap sergeant Major pierce Laly. The oldest pensioners is 92.

:15:50. > :15:55.He served in the Parachute Regiment. The Chelsea Pensioners provided an

:15:55. > :16:05.honour guard at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee river pageant and made a

:22:16. > :22:20.protecting all the RAF's deployed assets and when not on frontline

:22:20. > :22:23.service they provide the world famous Queen's Colour Squadron

:22:23. > :22:31.which played a prominent part in this year's Diamond Jubilee

:22:31. > :22:35.celebrations and at the Olympics and an unveiling of the Bomber

:22:35. > :22:45.Command Memorial in London's green park. Please give them a warm

:22:45. > :22:45.

:26:16. > :26:18.95% of my time in the Forces I fell for the lifestyle,

:26:18. > :26:21.After the Gulf War, we got sent to Bosnia,

:26:21. > :26:23.which was a completely different war altogether.

:26:23. > :26:25.It was a civil war.

:26:25. > :26:29.It wasn't just men getting affected,- it's women and children.

:26:29. > :26:33.We got into quite a bad firefight, which sits, still to this day,

:26:34. > :26:36.very heavy on my shoulders.

:26:36. > :26:40.You see sort of pure carnage.

:26:40. > :26:46.It's very hard to portray that to people, why that will affect you.

:26:46. > :26:51.I left the Army about a year after the Bosnia incident.

:26:51. > :26:54.I've had some absolutely up times, but then,

:26:54. > :26:57.when I would get in stressful positions and things like that,

:26:57. > :27:00.then, unfortunately, I would go right downhill.

:27:00. > :27:03.I would become a recluse.

:27:03. > :27:06.You bottle it up, and it's like a bottle of Coke -

:27:06. > :27:10.if you shake it up,it will come out...you know, explode.

:27:10. > :27:17.And that's basically what, unfortunately, happened.

:27:17. > :27:20.A friend of mine,who was an ex-serviceman, he told me,

:27:20. > :27:22."Go to the Legion. You've earned it.

:27:22. > :27:27."You did your service, and the Legion are there to help people."

:27:27. > :27:30.Derek contacted us two years ago.

:27:30. > :27:33.The Royal British Legion provided Derek with a deposit

:27:33. > :27:36.and the first month's rent on a flat for him.

:27:36. > :27:40.We didn't become aware of just how serious Derek's problems were

:27:40. > :27:42.until about a month later.

:27:42. > :27:45.I wasn't taking care of myself, I was drinking very heavy.

:27:45. > :27:51.He was obviously very mentally disturbed - shaking, sobbing.

:27:51. > :27:54.They talked me into, "Go and see the doctor,"

:27:55. > :28:00.and then I was diagnosed with having- post-traumatic stress disorder.

:28:00. > :28:03.I've found it almost impossible to come to terms with.

:28:03. > :28:05.I had a mental illness,

:28:05. > :28:09.I've got something that will trouble me for the rest of my life,

:28:09. > :28:11.but there is ways of coping with it.

:28:11. > :28:15.Come, Bobby! Come here!

:28:15. > :28:18.Derek knows that the Royal British Legion is always there for him.

:28:18. > :28:20.He knows he only has to pick the phone up

:28:21. > :28:22.and one of the welfare team will be here

:32:53. > :32:56.My dad was in the RAF Regiment during his National Service.

:32:59. > :33:01.if they wanted to talk to him, Ryan would listen.

:33:01. > :33:05.You couldn't have asked for a better brother. He loved the RAF,

:33:05. > :33:09.everything from the actual job, to working with his colleagues,

:33:09. > :33:12.to going away with his colleagues, nights out.

:33:12. > :33:17.He loved just the whole lifestyle of it, really.

:33:17. > :33:23.He went out to Afghanistan in 2009 - 2010,

:33:23. > :33:29.and then he went again, 2011 - 2012.

:33:29. > :33:32.He couldn't wait to get out there and to get amongst it all again.

:33:32. > :33:35.He always used to say, "If you're not living life on the edge,

:33:35. > :33:37."you're taking up too much room."

:33:38. > :33:41.They'd been out there for three months and they was on a patrol,

:33:41. > :33:48.and he got out of his vehicle and he was shot from behind by...

:33:48. > :33:53.They don't know who done it. But, um... That was it.

:33:53. > :33:59.He...he was killed instantly.

:33:59. > :34:02.Ryan's letter started with the opening line,

:34:02. > :34:07."If you're reading this, I'm kicking- it with the big guy in the sky."

:34:07. > :34:10.And...

:34:10. > :34:16.It was comforting to read it... what he'd wrote in it.

:34:16. > :34:23.But he was just thinking of his friends...and his family.

:34:23. > :34:25.I'll always remember him as being fun-loving,

:34:25. > :34:29.enjoying his life, and just following his dreams, really.

:34:29. > :34:33.A real inspiration. That's how I'll remember him.

:36:59. > :37:04.Ladies and gentlemen, in June this year the Bomber Command Memorial

:37:04. > :37:10.was unveiled by Her Majesty the Queen in Green Park in central

:37:10. > :37:15.London, it's a fitting memorial to the servicemen and women who served

:37:15. > :37:23.in Bomber Command. The average age of crew members was 22. Some who

:37:23. > :37:27.joined had a realistic expectation of surviving for just two weeks.

:37:27. > :37:33.The spirit of courage and determined optimism of that sage

:37:33. > :37:43.reflected in the music of the RAF RAF Squadronaires and their special

:37:43. > :37:53.

:41:19. > :41:21.I was a good navigator, I think.

:41:21. > :41:24.We always got back.

:41:24. > :41:28.Except the last time.

:41:28. > :41:33.I suppose, on my first op, I felt excited.

:41:33. > :41:37.We had no real idea of what an air raid looked like from the air.

:41:37. > :41:43.Many of us had experienced it when we were back home, on leave.

:41:43. > :41:47.Bomber Command was a means of retaliation.

:41:47. > :41:51.Nobody was ever very happy about dropping bombs,

:41:51. > :41:58.but war is a terrible thing, so I dropped bombs.

:41:58. > :42:02.I suppose the most common phrase that you would hear

:42:02. > :42:04.on a bomber station was,

:42:04. > :42:06."It's not going to happen to me."

:42:06. > :42:09.It was heard all over the place.

:42:09. > :42:12.Or, "It's not going to happen to us."

:42:12. > :42:18.But I'm afraid, suddenly, there were seven empty beds.

:42:18. > :42:23.You just had to accept it.

:42:23. > :42:28.We came under attack on our 17th trip.

:42:28. > :42:32.The captain decided that we weren't really going to make it

:42:32. > :42:36.and said, "Everybody out!"

:42:36. > :42:43.I landed in a tree very close to the-frontier between Belgium and Holland.

:42:43. > :42:47.I did get a marvellous amount of help

:42:47. > :42:51.from very many wonderful people.

:42:51. > :42:55.They didn't think of their own safety,

:42:55. > :43:01.and I eventually arrived down into Gibraltar.

:43:01. > :43:05.I've been extremely lucky. Very fortunate indeed.

:43:05. > :43:08.The cost, as far as Bomber Command was concerned,

:43:08. > :43:11.was getting on for 50%.

:43:11. > :43:15.I certainly remember, especially my crew,

:43:15. > :43:18.but many other people,

:43:18. > :43:23.think what could have been to those who didn't survive.

:43:23. > :43:33.We're the poorer without them.

:43:33. > :43:35.
