:00:09. > :00:15.good morning from Westminster Abbey, where astonishingly, almost
:00:15. > :00:23.every monarchy in our history has been crowned. Nearly 1000 years of
:00:23. > :00:28.our history are presented here. I am represented at the abbey where Queen
:00:28. > :00:32.Elizabeth was crowned 60 years ago, and she is back to celebrate that
:00:32. > :00:34.coronation. Something extraordinary has happened here this morning. Two
:00:34. > :00:41.of the regalia used in the Coronation have been brought to the
:00:41. > :00:46.Abbey under close guard to be placed on the high altar for the duration
:00:46. > :00:50.of the service. Two significant parts of the regalia. On the right,
:00:50. > :00:58.the gold eagle, with wings outstretched, which carried the
:00:58. > :01:07.sacred oil with which the Queen was anointed. And then the great Saint
:01:07. > :01:17.Edward's crown, solid gold encrusted with jewels heavy, weighs five lbs,
:01:17. > :01:43.
:01:43. > :01:48.over two kilos, only one briefly by the Queen at the Coronation. This
:01:48. > :01:56.wonderful Abbey, so much beloved, was actually designed to form a
:01:56. > :02:01.theatre for the Coronation of Kings and Queens by Henry III, designed so
:02:01. > :02:05.that as many people as possible could see the Coronation. And the
:02:05. > :02:10.congregation that has been arriving here for the last half-hour or so
:02:10. > :02:15.gathered from all corners of the UK, chosen by the Queen's
:02:15. > :02:17.representatives in the country, the Lord's lieutenant. People from
:02:17. > :02:25.public life who have given public service, members of the Armed Forces
:02:25. > :02:29.and others. And the Royal family will be here. 25 members of the
:02:29. > :02:37.Royal family joining the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, was unwell
:02:37. > :02:43.yesterday. It is said he will come here this morning, determined not to
:02:43. > :02:45.miss the service. In 1953, nearly 2 million people came to London to
:02:45. > :02:51.watch the spectacular Coronation procession had to get agents of the
:02:51. > :02:59.new Queen, and millions more saw the service for the first time live on
:02:59. > :03:04.television. For them, it was an excitement they could never forget.
:03:04. > :03:11.What I remember most about the day, finally, was that it was horribly
:03:11. > :03:15.cold. The weather was awful. I believe it was two degrees colder
:03:15. > :03:19.than it became in December that year. But it did not stop people
:03:19. > :03:25.sleeping in the streets, determined not to miss the opportunity of
:03:25. > :03:30.seeing this fairytale procession. Into the forecourt of the palace and
:03:30. > :03:35.through the gates comes the gilded coach. I was a junior footman in
:03:35. > :03:43.those days. After breakfast, I went back to my room and started to
:03:43. > :03:45.powder my hair, which consists of lathering your hair with soap,
:03:45. > :03:55.leaving the soap in your hair and then sprinkling it with flour and
:03:55. > :04:01.shaping it like a wig. Then my role was to walk by the left-hand wheel
:04:01. > :04:06.on the Duke of Edinburgh's side of the carriage. Incredible. As the
:04:06. > :04:14.coach went through the arched to go down the Mall, it was the roar of
:04:14. > :04:22.the people. It was something I shall never forget. I was having my second
:04:22. > :04:27.baby, which was very inconvenient at that moment. So I wore my wedding
:04:27. > :04:34.dress, which had been severely let out for various bits of my anatomy,
:04:34. > :04:40.and I remember we had to be there terribly early. The Abbey, of
:04:40. > :04:48.course, was looking marvellous, shining and glittering and full of
:04:48. > :04:51.people. The peers were all wearing their robes. There was quite a smell
:04:51. > :05:01.of mothballs about, because they had all been put away for the whole of
:05:01. > :05:04.
:05:04. > :05:10.the war. It was very noisy. Everyone was talking. Once the doors opened,
:05:10. > :05:15.a hush came over for a booking. Everybody was expectant, and it all
:05:15. > :05:23.went very quiet. Everyone was turning, waiting for her to come
:05:23. > :05:27.down. It was a magical moment. stood and we picked the trainer, and
:05:28. > :05:31.it had little satin handles underneath. The train rippled over
:05:31. > :05:41.our hands, and we all stood there and she turned round and said ready,
:05:41. > :05:41.
:05:42. > :05:46.girls? We said yes, and off we went. They were the first pictures. A few
:05:46. > :05:51.steps in, the atmosphere had changed from our point of view. As soon as
:05:51. > :06:01.the doors opened, we were working. It was fun, fast, and I was so much
:06:01. > :06:03.
:06:03. > :06:08.to do. It was an exciting atmosphere. To see the Queen looking
:06:08. > :06:13.so fragile, young and defenceless, somehow, with all the regalia going
:06:13. > :06:19.on around her and that little lonely figure standing there, was somehow
:06:19. > :06:29.terribly moving. It was somebody you knew, but in a new light, which
:06:29. > :06:38.
:06:38. > :06:44.changes everything. God save the Queen! It was the most amazing day
:06:44. > :06:50.of my life. People often say, your wedding must have been wonderful.
:06:50. > :07:00.And I say, well, it was. But to be chosen to be made of honour at the
:07:00. > :07:04.
:07:04. > :07:09.Queen's Coronation was the most wonderful day of my life.
:07:09. > :07:19.members of the Royal Family are being greeted at the door. The Duke

:08:38. > :08:48.canons of Westminster, the people who run the Cathedral, and then the
:08:48. > :08:52.Royal Family. A single police motorcycle marks the arrival of the
:08:52. > :08:58.Queen's car. Again, very little formality. Nothing like what

:32:07. > :32:15.happened. But this, they saw. Pomp and ceremony on a rainy June day,
:32:15. > :32:20.wrapped in time and custom. Very British. At its beginning was a
:32:20. > :32:29.moment of deepest meaning that we have all forgotten. The figure at
:32:29. > :32:38.the centre of events, the new Queen, goes alone not to be
:32:38. > :32:42.coronation, but passed it to kneel at the altar in prayer. Before her,
:32:42. > :32:49.the words "the kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of
:32:49. > :32:54.our Lord and Christ". We do not know what was prayed. Her Majesty knelt
:32:54. > :32:58.at the beginning of a path of demanding devotion and utter
:32:58. > :33:08.self-sacrifice, a path she did not choose, yet to which she was called
:33:08. > :33:14.by God. Today, we celebrate 60 years since that moment, 60 years of
:33:14. > :33:20.commitment. There was a trumpet fanfare today as the Queen arrived
:33:20. > :33:27.with her supporters. But let us resist the splendour of the
:33:27. > :33:34.spectacle for a moment and focus on what was meant. Not my will, Lord,
:33:34. > :33:42.but yours be done. And following Her Majesty's giving of allegiance to
:33:42. > :33:51.God, others, especially with such equal and dedicated commitment, the
:33:51. > :33:56.Duke of Edinburgh, pledged their allegiance to her. And here, in the
:33:56. > :34:06.grace and providence of God, is the model of liberty and authority which
:34:06. > :34:07.
:34:07. > :34:11.our country enjoys. Liberty is only real when it exists under
:34:11. > :34:20.authority. Liberty under authority begins, as the book of Common prayer
:34:20. > :34:25.puts it, with our duty to God, whose service is perfect freedom. We live
:34:25. > :34:35.in a hierarchy of liberty under authority that ascends to God's
:34:35. > :34:40.limitless love. As we see in the life of Jesus, with God, justice and
:34:40. > :34:43.mercy are perfectly joined, wisdom is unlimited, generosity is
:34:43. > :34:52.unstinting and love pours out to the whole world in an overwhelming
:34:52. > :35:00.embrace that is offered universally and abundantly. A nation that crowns
:35:00. > :35:05.its head of state with such a model of liberty under authority expresses
:35:05. > :35:13.commitment to the same glorious values for itself. In those moments
:35:14. > :35:19.of prayer as symbolised the basis for the greatness of this country.
:35:19. > :35:26.In their silence lies God's call. In their humility lies God's authority.
:35:26. > :35:32.In their resulting service lies God's perfect freedom. What follows
:35:32. > :35:42.is the joy of security that comes from obeying God alone. Such
:35:42. > :35:42.
:35:42. > :35:45.consecration to God is followed by a crown. When we obey God's call,
:35:45. > :35:51.whoever we are, leading government or quietly serving our local
:35:51. > :35:58.community, we establish a country that is openhanded and openhearted,
:35:58. > :36:07.serving others with joy. In such service, we become Britain at its
:36:07. > :36:13.best. We know how to celebrate, as again last year in the Olympics. We
:36:13. > :36:19.know how to comfort and grieve, as on the streets of Woolwich and the
:36:19. > :36:27.courage of passers-by and the police. Yet we are not always and
:36:27. > :36:30.everywhere at our best. We celebrate today not liberty by itself, which
:36:30. > :36:38.in human weakness turns to selfishness, but liberty under the
:36:38. > :36:45.authority of God. We are never more free, nor better, than when we are
:36:45. > :36:51.under the authority of God. Her Majesty the Queen is servant of the
:36:51. > :36:59.King of Kings, and so she serves as as we serve her, in liberty and
:36:59. > :37:09.under authority. It is a system that points to freedom in God, in whose
:37:09. > :37:15.
:37:15. > :37:17.love alone we are fully human, fully free. The choir will now sing the
:37:17. > :37:22.anthem that was specially commissioned for this service by
