:00:00. > :00:00.Melbourne but was later penalised for breaking new rules on fuel. All

:00:00. > :00:17.of that to come in Sportsday in 15 minutes, after The Papers.

:00:18. > :00:22.Welcome to our look ahead at what the papers will be bringing us

:00:23. > :00:26.tomorrow. With me are the media commentator David Davies, and

:00:27. > :00:32.Philippa Kennedy, the ombudsman for the Sun. We are going to start with

:00:33. > :00:35.the Telegraph, which leads with the news that more than 2 million more

:00:36. > :00:41.people have started paying tax at the 40% rate since the coalition

:00:42. > :00:45.took power in 2010. A photo of possible aeroplane parts off the

:00:46. > :00:51.coast of Australia dominates the front of the Guardian. As it does on

:00:52. > :00:53.the front of the Mirror, saying it supports the theory that the plane

:00:54. > :00:59.flew on for seven hours before crashing. And the missing jet is

:01:00. > :01:03.also the front page lead on the Express, which suggests that a

:01:04. > :01:08.bungled hijack may have been responsible for the plane going so

:01:09. > :01:13.far off course. In the Sun, a very different story, an interview with

:01:14. > :01:17.the Prime Minister by the comedian James Corden, while the Financial

:01:18. > :01:21.Times looks at pension schemes are and how they have been affected by

:01:22. > :01:30.the Budget. The Daily Mail has the same story. I suppose it is no

:01:31. > :01:33.surprise that the search for the missing plane continues to dominate.

:01:34. > :01:39.Let's start with the Daily Mirror, which has the headline... They are

:01:40. > :01:46.using some of that satellite imagery. This is the story that

:01:47. > :01:52.everybody is talking about. The number of theories about this is

:01:53. > :01:57.incredible. I hope it isn't the jet, because if it is, then it means they

:01:58. > :02:07.are all dead, instead of one of the many theories that perhaps the jet

:02:08. > :02:13.has landed in some remote island and everybody is safe. But I think that

:02:14. > :02:19.is so unlikely. I do not know if you have ever done any sailing, but in

:02:20. > :02:22.the middle of an ocean like that, it is two miles deep. How on earth they

:02:23. > :02:29.are going to even think of mounting a rescue, no, a salvage operation,

:02:30. > :02:33.is going to be horrendous. The Malaysians do not have those kind of

:02:34. > :02:39.submarines, or any of that kind of equipment. If it is there, of course

:02:40. > :02:42.crunch indeed. And they are saying that it is a notoriously area, where

:02:43. > :02:50.there can be a lot of garbage. These there can be a lot of garbage. These

:02:51. > :02:58.pieces of James Corden look substantial, but as Philippa says,

:02:59. > :03:01.two miles deep, and the comparable loss of that plane from Rio to

:03:02. > :03:08.Paris, the Air France plane, which went down, and that was only, I say

:03:09. > :03:12.only, one mile deep, and that took two years to find, after they had

:03:13. > :03:17.found some wreckage, to find the black box. And then of course, even

:03:18. > :03:20.when the debris is found, it is finding the black`box and then

:03:21. > :03:25.understanding what happened. It could be some considerable time. The

:03:26. > :03:35.Mirror is talking about another theory, that the plane flew on for

:03:36. > :03:42.seven in fact, my father`in`law piloted a plane in Perpignan, and

:03:43. > :03:45.something like that happened. There was a fracture of the exhaust

:03:46. > :03:52.system, the air conditioning system, so everybody indeed, it flew into

:03:53. > :03:57.the mountain, a DC nine, I think it was. Terrible. I have never been a

:03:58. > :04:02.good flyer, are you? I never even thought about it before. But these

:04:03. > :04:07.are the sort of things which stop people from taking flights. And of

:04:08. > :04:10.course, it is on the front of several papers, but it is all

:04:11. > :04:21.speculation. We do not know. Moving onto the Mail, which has the

:04:22. > :04:25.headline... David, the Mail has made a real campaign of this, hasn't it?

:04:26. > :04:32.They have, and they are very pleased with the Chancellor for what he has

:04:33. > :04:36.done. But of course, there are problems with the consequences. And

:04:37. > :04:42.some of those consequences are virtually immediate. The male is

:04:43. > :04:48.highlighting, retirees poised to turn their pension pot into an

:04:49. > :04:59.income, Dell Eugene providers with panic calls, fearing they will be

:05:00. > :05:05.trapped in shoddy deals. `` deluge. This is a truly radical reform, for

:05:06. > :05:09.which this Chancellor, whether you support him and his government or

:05:10. > :05:13.not, will be remembered. But it will be really interesting to see, from

:05:14. > :05:21.my point of view, the political consequences of this. And the way

:05:22. > :05:27.that this Chancellor, who by any standards is, you think of Gordon

:05:28. > :05:33.Brown as well, but the most political, politically sensitive, we

:05:34. > :05:39.are told, Chancellor, in many moons. He has seen that the grey vote is

:05:40. > :05:44.the vote that the Tories must have, to have any chance of being the

:05:45. > :05:49.biggest single party. And of course, many pensioners do vote, it is a

:05:50. > :05:53.high turnout. But it is interesting, 24 hours after the

:05:54. > :05:56.Budget, we are beginning to pick apart what is going on. I was

:05:57. > :05:59.speaking to a financial analyst earlier, who was saying that now,

:06:00. > :06:03.many people who think they might live longer will keep annuities, but

:06:04. > :06:13.that will mean the annuity providers might give less per year. We were

:06:14. > :06:17.speaking about this earlier, you are just getting nothing for your money

:06:18. > :06:23.these days. I might well go and buy the Lamborghini! If I thought I

:06:24. > :06:27.could get into it! I am pleased you have mentioned that. Moving onto the

:06:28. > :06:34.Guardian, it goes on the pensions story, with that very comment, from

:06:35. > :06:38.the pensions minister. If people do get a Lamborghini and end up on the

:06:39. > :06:41.state pension, that is their choice. Well, the thing about it is that

:06:42. > :06:49.people who have saved more responsible people like us, hey?!

:06:50. > :06:56.What am I going to do, go and blow it, by force, or whatever?! I think

:06:57. > :07:03.they are the sort of people that can be trusted to make their own

:07:04. > :07:07.decisions. But having temptation... It is just this wonderful, colourful

:07:08. > :07:13.phrase. The minister who made this comment, Steve Webb, the Pensions

:07:14. > :07:18.Minister, it is interesting for me that he is the person who has said

:07:19. > :07:20.this. The only one of those Lib Dem ministers who is very well regarded.

:07:21. > :07:27.If you go to the Telegraph this morning, there was a long article

:07:28. > :07:34.from one of their writers, who, no great lover of the Lib Dems, who

:07:35. > :07:36.praises Steve Webb to the hilt. And he has been in the forefront of

:07:37. > :07:43.seeking to reform the pensions system. And I suppose those that

:07:44. > :07:48.don't agree with this system just think that if people go and splash

:07:49. > :07:51.out, they will be more reliant on the state, and the state will have

:07:52. > :07:56.to support them even more? Absolutely. But on the other hand,

:07:57. > :08:03.it is quite a nice thought. Let's say you were ill... You would be

:08:04. > :08:08.tempted, wouldn't you? Well, not so much of the Lamborghini, but... As

:08:09. > :08:13.long as it wasn't yellow. It is a bit like, do you think I could get

:08:14. > :08:19.into a Lamborghini, at my age to mark of course! No, it is a big

:08:20. > :08:25.thing. For me, you cannot be complaining about the nanny state,

:08:26. > :08:32.as people still do, and then you have to take a view on this. For me,

:08:33. > :08:35.if you have been saving for as many years, and putting money into

:08:36. > :08:40.pension pots for as many years as some people have, surely you should

:08:41. > :08:46.have the right to do with that money what you will. We will stampede in

:08:47. > :08:53.our Zimmer frames down to the garage afterwards! It will be interesting

:08:54. > :08:56.to see how that plays out. Staying with the Guardian, and Ukraine, and

:08:57. > :09:03.one senses that along with the Malaysian jet, this really is the

:09:04. > :09:14.story of this month, isn't it? It is. It is terrifying. We do not know

:09:15. > :09:18.what is going to happen next. Is the West just going to go`ahead with

:09:19. > :09:26.sanctions on Russian oligarchs, or do nothing? The Guardian is

:09:27. > :09:35.suggesting that they might just blow a lot of hot air into the air, and

:09:36. > :09:43.then agree that Crimea should go to Russia. That is what they are going

:09:44. > :09:52.to do. And do nothing. The point is, what happens next? I am yet to find

:09:53. > :09:57.any person who is uneasy still about the fact that an elected president

:09:58. > :10:05.in Ukraine, who fled his country to go to Russia, is disowned by

:10:06. > :10:11.everybody. Equally, Putin acts in the way that he has acted, which

:10:12. > :10:14.seems to me to be against anybody's idea of international law, and

:10:15. > :10:17.really, nobody is going to do anything about either. Because

:10:18. > :10:25.everybody does what suits them. The question is, I have been to Don

:10:26. > :10:31.Letts several times. `` Don `esque. If Putin starts to move in there as

:10:32. > :10:40.well, it would seem to me... It is north of Crimea, and east of

:10:41. > :10:43.Ukraine. Very Russian influenced. And you already hear rumblings, and

:10:44. > :10:48.there have been demonstrations there as well, and the question is, what

:10:49. > :10:53.does Putin do there? And if he moves there, I mean, imagine if George W

:10:54. > :10:57.Bush had been president at the moment and Putin had acted in the

:10:58. > :11:01.way that he has. Whether you agree with George W Bush or not, it

:11:02. > :11:10.doesn't matter. Does anybody think that he would have acted the same?

:11:11. > :11:13.In the Telegraph it is a different angle. What's interesting about both

:11:14. > :11:18.is they make the point that America is going to start to put pressure on

:11:19. > :11:22.Europe to ratchet up their sanctions. There are people putting

:11:23. > :11:28.pressure on Obama as well. In the Daily Telegraph there's a picture of

:11:29. > :11:33.Roman Abramovich. One prominent American, a leading critic of

:11:34. > :11:39.Vladimir Putin as well, is saying that oligarchs like Roman Abramovich

:11:40. > :11:46.should be targeted. I think he is playing playground stuff. Abramovich

:11:47. > :11:50.is a big mate of Putin's isn't he? What's he going to do? He isn't

:11:51. > :11:55.going to do anything. I think there's a lot of sabre`rattling

:11:56. > :12:00.going on here. The Conservative MP for Braintree says he thinks Russian

:12:01. > :12:05.oligarchs should be included in an expand expanded sanctions reef. The

:12:06. > :12:13.story also said Government sources said there was no question of

:12:14. > :12:21.sanction sanctions for the pair. I don't know why football comes into

:12:22. > :12:25.it. The situation here is very clear in one sense. I don't think for a

:12:26. > :12:33.minute that this Government is going to act against the likes of Mr

:12:34. > :12:37.Abramovich and Mr Usmanov. Are they Putin's Cronies, as the expression

:12:38. > :12:44.is used in several of the papers? Or are they private citizens who've no

:12:45. > :12:48.official link with Mr Putin at all? David, you say you don't think that

:12:49. > :12:56.that will happen, but do you think it should? I think that if you were

:12:57. > :13:00.seriously doing something, taking on this challenge, of course you would

:13:01. > :13:05.move in that way. But the reality is that nobody thinks, at the moment,

:13:06. > :13:12.I'm saying what happens next is the key thing. If Putin continues and

:13:13. > :13:19.moves on to Donetsk and the other countries in the former Soviet

:13:20. > :13:25.Union, the ` even certain of the old Baltic states are saying hey, what

:13:26. > :13:31.about us? Philippa, I can see the Sun having a lot of fun with this

:13:32. > :13:40.story and suggesting ol backs should be targeted. `` oligarchs should be

:13:41. > :13:47.targeted. The Sun had James Corden editing today, social worker viewing

:13:48. > :13:52.the Prime Minister. I haven't `` editing today, interviewing the

:13:53. > :13:59.Prime Minister. Looking at retirement. This one, retired? Help

:14:00. > :14:05.others and live longer, is says Lord O'Donnell. People in their mid 60s

:14:06. > :14:10.should volunteer to care for elderly people to pro long their lives and

:14:11. > :14:16.stay out of hospital. I was looking at the front page tomorrow and it is

:14:17. > :14:21.a very old front page. You've got the pensions, the silver voter

:14:22. > :14:27.pension story. Then we've got a story about cutting down on salt to

:14:28. > :14:32.avoid getting older. And this story is about 60`year`olds. Gus O'Donnell

:14:33. > :14:37.saying if you are in your 60s you should be out there helping people

:14:38. > :14:41.in their 80s, perhaps getting involved with Meals on Wheels, so

:14:42. > :14:45.you don't become lonely and they don't and it will make you feel

:14:46. > :14:52.young. I'm not sure from this story, I don't know if you are, as to what

:14:53. > :14:56.is the evidence that pensioners who do not volunteer to help others when

:14:57. > :15:05.they retire are knocking years of their life expectancy? It comes from

:15:06. > :15:06.nowhere. He says, the author of a review which recommends that

:15:07. > :15:11.Government should consider the effect of its policies on people's

:15:12. > :15:16.happiness. This sounds like one of these people who've spent a lot of

:15:17. > :15:21.money on this and a lot of time and they come out with something like

:15:22. > :15:27.that at the end. We'll pursue that later in an hour's time. Stay with

:15:28. > :15:31.us on BBC News, because at 11 o'clock we'll have more on the

:15:32. > :15:34.search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane nearly two weeks

:15:35. > :15:41.since it dispeer. Up next it's Sportsday.
