:00:00. > :00:00.investigation. As the British swimming Championships come to a

:00:00. > :00:00.close, we will round up another record`breaking day in Glasgow. That

:00:00. > :00:18.is in 15 minutes after the papers. Hello and welcome to our look ahead

:00:19. > :00:21.to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are Oliver

:00:22. > :00:31.Wright, Whitehall editor at The Independent, and Elizabeth Orcutt,

:00:32. > :00:36.deputy picture editor at The Times. The Metro is leading on a report by

:00:37. > :00:41.the UN which has branded Britain are sexist boys club. The Independent is

:00:42. > :00:45.focusing on a report by a food bank charity reclaims nearly a million

:00:46. > :00:50.people in Britain rely on hand`outs to eat. The growing number of those

:00:51. > :00:54.depending on food parcels in the UK is also the splash on the front of

:00:55. > :00:59.the daily Mirror. On the Guardian, the crisis in the Ukraine which the

:01:00. > :01:08.paper says is on the brink of a major conflict. The main photograph

:01:09. > :01:11.on the front of the Daily Telegraph is of tanks sent to battle

:01:12. > :01:14.pro`Russian separatists in the east of the country. The main story

:01:15. > :01:19.however is looking at the health service which it says is at breaking

:01:20. > :01:24.point. In the Daily Mirror, an amazing photograph on the front of

:01:25. > :01:28.this. Elizabeth, it is good that you happen to be in tonight, given some

:01:29. > :01:35.of the interesting pictures we have got. Britain 2014, we are the sixth

:01:36. > :01:40.largest economy in the world, more millionaires than ever before, so

:01:41. > :01:47.why have we handed out 1 million food parcels? Would you have picked

:01:48. > :01:50.this photograph for the Times? Probably not so they have done some

:01:51. > :01:58.research on focused on the distress of a child in order to punch the

:01:59. > :02:05.story out. No, not on the front, definitely not. It is arresting, it

:02:06. > :02:11.will attract... It does look incredible, you're right, it is

:02:12. > :02:18.arresting. I suppose the next question is, is that a real child in

:02:19. > :02:22.distress? It is a model release picture, so whether it is an actual

:02:23. > :02:30.crying child or whether it is a model child that is crying, I

:02:31. > :02:37.couldn't tell you. So it is a model released child? Yes, I don't know if

:02:38. > :02:44.it is an actor but the situation the child is in, the consenting adult

:02:45. > :02:50.has agreed for this situation to happen. We can compare that actually

:02:51. > :02:56.with the front page of the Independent. That is the same story

:02:57. > :03:02.about food parcels and food banks, and a very different tack. On the

:03:03. > :03:08.right, food poverty ` the scandal that shames Britain. Oliver, this is

:03:09. > :03:14.your paper. No photograph, just text. Does that grab a potential

:03:15. > :03:21.buyer the same way the Daily Mirror doors? I think we are in a different

:03:22. > :03:27.market! What we try to do on this front page is, we have the most

:03:28. > :03:31.important story of the day, the food poverty, but we also want to tell

:03:32. > :03:35.people about Ukraine which is incredibly important as well. You

:03:36. > :03:40.try to put a mixture of different types of stories so that somebody

:03:41. > :03:44.looks at the news stand and says I am interested in that and that, I

:03:45. > :03:50.will go for this. The Daily Mirror have gone for one image which stands

:03:51. > :03:54.out. Clearly there are some times when you want to give up your entire

:03:55. > :03:59.page to one from story because it is that important. This is one which is

:04:00. > :04:08.important but not one that you would clear your front page to run on.

:04:09. > :04:13.Nearly a million people now rely on hand`outs to eat. One thing is for

:04:14. > :04:18.sure, it is not the kind of image George Osborne once on the front

:04:19. > :04:24.page. The Conservatives are saying everything is getting better, we are

:04:25. > :04:27.back on our feet, this belies that. The Conservatives might argue we

:04:28. > :04:37.have had a lot of publicity about food banks, publicity about it rises

:04:38. > :04:41.so usage goes up, but going from 600,000 relying on them last year to

:04:42. > :04:48.nearly a million this year, purely down to publicity? I doubt it. It is

:04:49. > :04:53.a big story and two papers have decided to go with it. Is it the

:04:54. > :05:00.kind of story that perhaps a right of centre paper, the Times, your

:05:01. > :05:08.paper, should be looking at too? Yes, but not for the front page

:05:09. > :05:14.necessarily. It is something that is going to become more and more

:05:15. > :05:19.prominent I suppose, that section of society that perhaps has not

:05:20. > :05:24.benefited from all the facts and figures suggesting that the economy

:05:25. > :05:32.is doing well. It is going to be the battle ground for the next election,

:05:33. > :05:36.isn't it? I think part of the problem, I guess, is that the

:05:37. > :05:40.benefits system is changing so some people are moving from one type of

:05:41. > :05:44.benefit to another and we know how efficient the Department of work and

:05:45. > :05:50.pensions is on moving people from one type of benefit. It might only

:05:51. > :05:55.be for a week, only for two weeks, but just imagine if you don't know

:05:56. > :05:59.where you are going to get food for money from. This is a real problem

:06:00. > :06:03.and we are seeing perhaps a more divided society then we have seen

:06:04. > :06:10.before. I think it is a very significant issue and you have also

:06:11. > :06:15.got the Coalition of churches writing another letter. You have got

:06:16. > :06:20.600 Church leaders raising this and it is a problem they feel strongly

:06:21. > :06:26.about. They are seeing it in their communities and I think it will be

:06:27. > :06:32.an issue at the next election. Oliver, you mentioned the fact you

:06:33. > :06:40.have also got the Ukraine on the front page. Gunships take the crisis

:06:41. > :06:43.closer to all`out war. Clearly the situation there is getting

:06:44. > :06:52.potentially more and more desperate. Yes, day after day, it looks more

:06:53. > :06:56.grim. I wonder to what extent that Russia, I mean a lot of people are

:06:57. > :07:00.whipping this up but Russia wants to intervene in Ukraine, I'm not

:07:01. > :07:06.convinced that in terms of troops they do want to get involved, for a

:07:07. > :07:10.whole series of reason. Some of them geographical, also because it is a

:07:11. > :07:15.complete mess. What is problematic is that you have 35% of the

:07:16. > :07:19.population in eastern Ukraine who see themselves primarily as

:07:20. > :07:25.Russians. You have seen it in other cases, in the Balkans, but the

:07:26. > :07:30.potential for some type of Civil War is huge. No one is trying to ratchet

:07:31. > :07:35.down the pressure is the difficulty at the moment. Everyone, including

:07:36. > :07:40.William Hague yesterday, was not exactly doing his best to calm

:07:41. > :07:44.things down. The Russians are whipping it up, the Ukrainians

:07:45. > :07:49.themselves, and it is difficult to see where a negotiated settlement

:07:50. > :07:54.comes. The Ukrainians are saying they have to restore law and order,

:07:55. > :07:59.they have to be seen as not as important as they work in Crimea,

:08:00. > :08:03.but at the same time they are trying to proceed with a testament ``

:08:04. > :08:09.certain amount of caution that is not going to upset Moscow enough to

:08:10. > :08:16.send in troops. Absolutely. You have got troops on the border coming in,

:08:17. > :08:20.you have got the pro`Russians taking over the Government buildings and

:08:21. > :08:25.you are in this situation of stand`off. What is going to happen

:08:26. > :08:32.next? Will it reach a flash point, or will it gradually ebbed away and

:08:33. > :08:38.we will end up with a negotiated settlement? Where this will go seems

:08:39. > :08:44.to be open, completely open to me. The daily Telegraph has a different

:08:45. > :08:54.picture again to the independent summing up the same story. Tanks,

:08:55. > :08:59.Elizabeth. The Ukraine sends in the tanks and one wonders what President

:09:00. > :09:06.Obama's next move will be if there is a clear sign that the Russians

:09:07. > :09:13.are going to moving en masse. Quite. Is he going to fly over and bomb it?

:09:14. > :09:18.I have no idea. They have made it clear that military action is

:09:19. > :09:21.probably off the table. The suggestion is that sanctions will

:09:22. > :09:27.have to be ratcheted up again and that would make things even more

:09:28. > :09:35.difficult. And it will hurt us in the UK. It is not a one`way street.

:09:36. > :09:40.If you just look at London and the large amount of Russian money in

:09:41. > :09:44.London, invested in London, any attempt to choke that will have

:09:45. > :09:49.severe economic consequences for us trust. Your point earlier was

:09:50. > :09:55.fascinating, the two different images, one in the Independent and

:09:56. > :09:57.one in the Telegraph, and the one in the Telegraph is particularly

:09:58. > :10:04.striking. It really brings it home to you. It does, we think the

:10:05. > :10:09.picture was probably taken yesterday. Certainly when I got up

:10:10. > :10:13.this morning, I was looking for pictures of tanks and we couldn't

:10:14. > :10:19.find them but this is dated from yesterday so it has obviously been

:10:20. > :10:24.brewing quietly for a good 48 hours. I suspect over the next few days you

:10:25. > :10:31.will be able to take photographs for a number of days to illustrate the

:10:32. > :10:35.story. The Telegraph, hospital bed shortage. UK has second lowest

:10:36. > :10:41.number of beds per person in Europe. Yes, but the percentages, they don't

:10:42. > :10:47.seem enormous, do they? I can't remember what it was. 78% was the

:10:48. > :10:51.OECD average and we were 84%. That's not massive. If you are running an

:10:52. > :11:00.organisation that costs all these billions, which the NHS does, you

:11:01. > :11:05.want good occupiesancy. I am not completely convinced that's

:11:06. > :11:09.disastrous. OK. Again this is going to be ` the NHS and the state of the

:11:10. > :11:13.NHS as we get closer to the election, these are going to be the

:11:14. > :11:18.stories we are going to see more of. Labour are going to push this sort

:11:19. > :11:22.of thing. Elizabeth is absolutely right. Having high occupiesancy is

:11:23. > :11:25.not necessarily a bad thing and keeping people out of hospital is

:11:26. > :11:30.not necessarily a bad thing. To be fair to this Government it has a

:11:31. > :11:36.policy that pursued pretty much since 2001 to reduce the number of

:11:37. > :11:40.beds, to cut the length of time people spend in hospital, the more

:11:41. > :11:43.chance you have of getting some infection, because they're not great

:11:44. > :11:46.places for that even with all the precautions. The idea should be to

:11:47. > :11:52.keep people out of hospital, 50,000 beds have come out since 2001. The

:11:53. > :11:57.rates are something you manage, you want high occupiesancy rates.

:11:58. > :12:00.Hospital bed shortage exposed is not necessarily fair or accurate in

:12:01. > :12:09.terms of the situation. The man from the independent, the woman from The

:12:10. > :12:15.Times, you slagged off The Telegraph there! Let's go on to The Guardian.

:12:16. > :12:19.The picture is of the memorial service at Anfield for those who

:12:20. > :12:23.died at Hillsborough. The text very small at the bottom there. The

:12:24. > :12:32.photograph says it all really. It does. Not a dry eye in the house.

:12:33. > :12:39.One completely understands why. The tragedy is it's 25 years on and the

:12:40. > :12:43.distress is still there. It's absolutely right that as papers we

:12:44. > :12:49.mark that and we respect their grief. Sure. The Metro has marked it

:12:50. > :12:56.with a photograph that you need to read the text to understand what

:12:57. > :13:06.that is about. The two pictures on the front pages there side by side.

:13:07. > :13:12.On the right ` what is that on the? I am not sure. It was inscribed with

:13:13. > :13:16.the name of each victim. Whoever choose that picture, Elizabeth will

:13:17. > :13:19.know better than me, thought it was a clever picture with the fans in

:13:20. > :13:26.the background and this in the foreground. To be honest you have to

:13:27. > :13:28.look carefully. The Guardian... It's more straightforward and

:13:29. > :13:32.straightaway it hits you the power of it. You wouldn't have picked that

:13:33. > :13:40.front page? I certainly wouldn't have put it in that picture box. It

:13:41. > :13:44.seems to be about the ` the event is about the people and coming together

:13:45. > :13:53.of the people. The people in the picture are out of focus and they're

:13:54. > :13:57.not foregrounded by this image. I am sure that the ring of light is a

:13:58. > :14:04.beautiful thing and we moving but the image and the way it's cropped

:14:05. > :14:10.you can't see what it is. It's a shame. Even Stephen Gerrard on the

:14:11. > :14:16.left there, you can't tell who it is. I don't think it's quite worked,

:14:17. > :14:20.sadly. All right, you will be back in an hour's time to look at more

:14:21. > :14:25.stories behind the headlines. Stay with us here on BBC news, at the top

:14:26. > :14:29.of the hour we will have much more on the situation in Ukraine. Very

:14:30. > :14:35.tense on the ground as the Ukrainian Government sends forces in to take

:14:36. > :14:48.on pro`Russian militants. Now it's time for Sportsday.

:14:49. > :14:53.Hello and welcome to Sportsday. Coming up: The Gunners keep the

:14:54. > :14:59.Champions League in their sights after beating West Ham to move up to

:15:00. > :15:02.4th in the table. There's trouble at Villa as two of

:15:03. > :15:03.Paul Lambert's backroom staff are suspended by the
