:00:08. > :00:20.for more on that, and all of the other top releases. `` Anna Smith.

:00:21. > :00:25.Hello, and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing

:00:26. > :00:27.us tomorrow. With me are Yasmin Alibhai`Brown, columnist from the

:00:28. > :00:31.Independent, and Matthew Green, journalist and author.

:00:32. > :00:33.The Observer claims that thousands in a district of Damascus are

:00:34. > :00:36.running out of food, leading to relief agencies declaring it a

:00:37. > :00:41.crisis that is unprecedented in living memory.

:00:42. > :00:44.The Independent on Sunday has a special report on mounting concern

:00:45. > :00:49.at global food security, claiming the world is on the brink of a wheat

:00:50. > :00:53.crisis. An exclusive from The Mail on Sunday

:00:54. > :00:56.on a businessman, re`appointed by David Cameron to head a quango,

:00:57. > :01:02.steps down after it was disclosed that he was bankrupt.

:01:03. > :01:05.The Sunday Telegraph leads is how Ofsted are looking at putting at

:01:06. > :01:10.least six Birmingham schools into special measures.

:01:11. > :01:13.The Sunday Times claims that senior Labour figures are concerned that

:01:14. > :01:16.basing an election strategy around the cost`of`living crisis may lead

:01:17. > :01:20.to the party looking like a one`trick pony.

:01:21. > :01:23.And the Sunday Express tells its readers they could be in for a

:01:24. > :01:38.refund from an energy firm that's admitted to having faulty meters.

:01:39. > :01:41.Let's begin. We are going to start with the Independent. It is more

:01:42. > :01:44.their picture story that we are interested in. A year on from the

:01:45. > :01:47.terrible collapse in Bangladesh of the textile factory, and Matthew,

:01:48. > :01:53.that is a story which at the time you were deeply involved in. Yes, I

:01:54. > :01:57.went to Bangladesh at the time to cover the aftermath of the disaster.

:01:58. > :02:02.It is perhaps worth remembering exactly what happened. It was a

:02:03. > :02:07.4`storey building, known as Rana Plaza, packed with workers. The huge

:02:08. > :02:13.crack had appeared in the wall, and the owner of the building herded

:02:14. > :02:17.everyone in, and a few hours later it collapsed. It was one of the

:02:18. > :02:23.worst disasters in the history of the industry. The Independent is

:02:24. > :02:26.saying that some of the victims have still not received compensation, and

:02:27. > :02:32.there is a campaign to avoid another disaster. Yes, and I think the

:02:33. > :02:40.campaign will be all over the place, including here in London. I think,

:02:41. > :02:44.these sorts of accidents are absolutely the responsibility of

:02:45. > :02:51.those companies who are out there harvesting cheap labour, and I went

:02:52. > :02:58.to India last year and they met people from Bhopal, which was 25

:02:59. > :03:03.years ago, and they still haven't had any compensation. They have gone

:03:04. > :03:09.blind, had miscarriages, all of this. That can't go on, and it is up

:03:10. > :03:13.to us, those of us who love frocks should always be asking the

:03:14. > :03:19.questions about, how much are you paying? That was a big campaign at

:03:20. > :03:27.the time, wasn't it? Asking consumers to be more aware of how

:03:28. > :03:29.their garments are made. Yes, it was very interesting to see the big

:03:30. > :03:36.brands, shuffling quietly away, saying it wasn't anything to do with

:03:37. > :03:38.them. They were saying they can't be responsible for monitoring the

:03:39. > :03:41.safety in the buildings where these items have been produced. There has

:03:42. > :03:45.been some progress since then, I think the scale of the catastrophe

:03:46. > :03:48.was so big that some of these companies have been shocked into

:03:49. > :03:52.action, so the Independent is talking about a new fire safety

:03:53. > :03:56.standard that these companies are signing up to. Not all the

:03:57. > :04:03.companies, there are still some companies that are holding out and

:04:04. > :04:06.not doing the responsible thing. 20 years ago, Bangladesh was right on

:04:07. > :04:11.the margins of the global economy, and it is thanks to these companies

:04:12. > :04:16.that huge numbers of people have got jobs, particularly young women from

:04:17. > :04:21.rural areas who might otherwise be living in extremely isolated and

:04:22. > :04:24.bleak existence, they have found some sort of freedom through these

:04:25. > :04:32.jobs. Of course, there is a price to be paid. I think shareholders have

:04:33. > :04:35.got to be, have to have more of a say in this. It can't just the about

:04:36. > :04:40.their profits, because how can you ignore something of that kind? I

:04:41. > :04:45.remember after that disaster, there were a few scattered protests,

:04:46. > :04:50.companies like Primark, who had clothing made there. I don't whether

:04:51. > :04:57.there was a huge groundswell of concern among consumers. There have

:04:58. > :05:01.been funds set up by some of the companies, hasn't it? Yes, there

:05:02. > :05:06.has. This independent story is about a woman who hasn't received any

:05:07. > :05:14.compensation, but it takes a long time. Looking at the Observer, Syria

:05:15. > :05:20.is back on the front page, and then you are pleased to see it. I know

:05:21. > :05:26.how the media works, I am part of the media, we run stories and we

:05:27. > :05:30.leave them. Actually, when it comes to Syria, we can't and should never

:05:31. > :05:35.leave this. I know a lot of things are happening in Ukraine and so on,

:05:36. > :05:42.but this is the biggest, the most shocking disaster I think in the

:05:43. > :05:47.last, I would say since World War II. It is tough to keep the stories

:05:48. > :05:52.fresh. When it is the same story over and over again. The Observer

:05:53. > :06:01.have done a very strong job here. They have a story about the Yarmouk

:06:02. > :06:07.refugee camp, where convoys are being allowed in and people are

:06:08. > :06:10.running out of food. These were Palestinian refugees, who already

:06:11. > :06:15.work living very well, but were safe and were being fed and getting an

:06:16. > :06:24.education, but if we stop covering this story, our politicians.

:06:25. > :06:27.Attending to this crisis. We were talking about Ukraine earlier, that

:06:28. > :06:31.has dominated the foreign pages and the front pages for the last few

:06:32. > :06:34.years, and the link is unfair because the Russian President is one

:06:35. > :06:45.of the biggest backers of the Syrian government, months back, there were

:06:46. > :06:48.agreements to join with the US, they have really gone out the window.

:06:49. > :06:53.Sanctions and tough words haven't really done much. I didn't

:06:54. > :07:02.understand why we are much tougher on Iran when it comes to sanctions

:07:03. > :07:09.and nonviolent actions we can take, and so non`specific on Syria, I find

:07:10. > :07:13.that appalling. The Sunday Times, the story I was surprised to see on

:07:14. > :07:19.our list, but one you feel strongly about. Prove UR 18 to watch

:07:20. > :07:25.pornography, a new law. Children will be blocked from watching online

:07:26. > :07:35.pornography after government moves to make website administrators seek

:07:36. > :07:40.proof of age. This is a really good move, if it happens. Parents and

:07:41. > :07:42.others have been pointing out the effect of easy access to pornography

:07:43. > :07:49.on very young minds, boys as well is girls. It is really having a

:07:50. > :07:55.demonstrable impact on the way they think about each other and so want.

:07:56. > :08:00.Is it going to work was much a guess that is the question. I don't know,

:08:01. > :08:04.but we have got to do something, it has been going on. I want us to stop

:08:05. > :08:07.saying that we can't do anything. saying that we can't do anything.

:08:08. > :08:15.That is worst in the argument, it is impossible to enforce. Arar the

:08:16. > :08:26.story, the sinking of the ferry in South Korea. A fairy hero gave life

:08:27. > :08:30.to save others. `` our other story. A poignant story about a 22`year`old

:08:31. > :08:34.member of the crew who actually waded through chest high water

:08:35. > :08:37.without a lifejacket so that other people, some of these children,

:08:38. > :08:42.could try to escape. Of course, she wasn't among the survivors. It

:08:43. > :08:45.reminds think of an awful story I read a couple of days ago about the

:08:46. > :08:50.teacher who organised the trip committing suicide out of remorse

:08:51. > :08:55.and guilt, and saying, perhaps I will be able to teach these students

:08:56. > :09:04.in the afterlife. There has been a story of one passenger dying after

:09:05. > :09:07.giving his life. Yes, only 17, and he gave his life vest to his friend

:09:08. > :09:14.who was drowning. There are still over 250 people missing, young

:09:15. > :09:21.people, and these terribly selfless people, really. Let's leave that.

:09:22. > :09:31.The Sunday Telegraph, Islamist plot, six schools face special

:09:32. > :09:35.measures, this is so `` after the so`called Trojan horse to commit.

:09:36. > :09:51.This has been building up, think this is the sixth day `` Trojan

:09:52. > :09:55.horse document. This is Ofsted inspections, Ofsted did inspect most

:09:56. > :10:05.of these schools. And it has been asked to inspect them again, amid

:10:06. > :10:11.allegations of then becoming Islamic. I have no doubt that this

:10:12. > :10:15.is going on, but how we investigated, we have got to make

:10:16. > :10:19.sure there is trust. We can't storm into schools and start behaving as

:10:20. > :10:28.if you are storming into a place where there is a cache of weapons.

:10:29. > :10:32.But we have to talk about it. We need to talk about how it is part of

:10:33. > :10:38.a much bigger problem. Yes, but we need to do it, seeing that these

:10:39. > :10:43.institutions with serious problems. There are many people who want

:10:44. > :10:51.something done urgently. We were talking earlier about how there were

:10:52. > :10:54.concerns not only about the schools but about other is making extremists

:10:55. > :11:04.in places like Birmingham raising funds for extremist groups around

:11:05. > :11:12.the world. Let's talk about Saudi Arabia. I know, you think that is

:11:13. > :11:19.the subplot. Thank you both very much for joining us. Stay with us on

:11:20. > :11:21.BBC News, because at midnight we will have much more on the South

:11:22. > :11:25.Korean ferry disaster, which has claimed 36 lives. Up next, it is The

:11:26. > :11:29.Film Review.
