:00:00. > :00:00.game, the latest from the World Snooker Championship, and a shock

:00:00. > :00:00.for Ospreys in the Pro 12. That is all to come in 15 minutes on

:00:00. > :00:22.Sportsday after The Papers. Hello and welcome to our look ahead

:00:23. > :00:25.to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me other

:00:26. > :00:32.broadcaster Henry Bonsu and the former trade minister Lord Digby

:00:33. > :00:36.Jones. The Metro is leading on the inquest into the death of Peaches

:00:37. > :00:42.Geldof. The Express has decided to focus on a rise in house prices. The

:00:43. > :00:45.Telegraph says dozens of grammar schools in England are planning to

:00:46. > :00:49.discriminate against middle`class pupils when choosing admissions. The

:00:50. > :00:54.housing bubble is now the brightest hazard light on the Bank of

:00:55. > :00:57.England's dashboard according to the Financial Times. The Guardian is

:00:58. > :01:03.leading on the refusal of barristers to represent defendants in protest

:01:04. > :01:05.at legal aid cuts. The Mirror is reporting the apology from Jeremy

:01:06. > :01:11.Clarkson following allegations that he used an offensive term. The Daily

:01:12. > :01:16.Mail says Nick Clegg is blocking a crackdown on people who carry

:01:17. > :01:20.knives. Interesting stories there. We will start with the Daily

:01:21. > :01:25.Telegraph. Mr Jones. The new troubleshooter! We will talk about

:01:26. > :01:29.that a little bit later. Middle`class pupils losing out on

:01:30. > :01:34.grammar schools. What is this about? Thank you! The root out for so many.

:01:35. > :01:41.Did you go to a grammar school? Yes. I was a scholarship boy at a

:01:42. > :01:45.public school but much the same. It was the way out for kids who were

:01:46. > :01:51.frankly bright, and with parents who gave them love and enthusiasm but no

:01:52. > :01:55.money. It was the late Anthony Crossland, but the very living

:01:56. > :02:04.Shirley Williams, both of whom dedicated themselves to destroying

:02:05. > :02:09.this way for the not so well heeled bright kids getting a fabulous

:02:10. > :02:14.education. So what is going on now? They have been under the cosh ever

:02:15. > :02:18.since. For some reason, if you have done everything well in life, you

:02:19. > :02:21.will achieve excellence, which is not true. The metropolitan elite are

:02:22. > :02:25.saying that we can't have all these middle`class kids going to grammar

:02:26. > :02:28.schools. Grammar schools are responding and saying, OK, we will

:02:29. > :02:35.positively discriminate. These people will not go there. So if you

:02:36. > :02:39.actually have moved into an area, if your parents might have bought a

:02:40. > :02:46.house in a particular area because of a good school, if you are there

:02:47. > :02:49.by accident of where you were born and what you do, you could be

:02:50. > :02:56.discriminated against. It is an absolute disgrace. But why? Let's

:02:57. > :03:00.leave the politics and socioeconomics out of it. It is just

:03:01. > :03:04.not good for the country. The country needs as many aspiration of

:03:05. > :03:09.the excellent pupils as they can possibly get. It has got to take on

:03:10. > :03:15.Asia. You have been talking about poor kids and people from lower

:03:16. > :03:19.income backgrounds. The fact is that Ofsted has said that grammar schools

:03:20. > :03:23.in this country are stuffed full of middle`class children. Although

:03:24. > :03:28.something like 16% of children are on free school meals, only 3% of

:03:29. > :03:33.those that go to grammar schools are from a low income backgrounds where

:03:34. > :03:37.the household is earning less than ?16,000 and there is a generational

:03:38. > :03:41.waste of talent. What are we doing for those young people? The head of

:03:42. > :03:45.this grammar school association says that people will not see much

:03:46. > :03:49.difference, because we are not talking about huge numbers. This is

:03:50. > :03:53.a scare story. It is the Daily Telegraph saying to its tribe, watch

:03:54. > :03:57.out. Your kids and their aspirations will be destroyed here. We are

:03:58. > :04:01.talking about a few hundred children. It might be factually

:04:02. > :04:07.accurate that it is a tribal story but it could be true. So that is all

:04:08. > :04:12.right then? It is about the skin. At the end of the day you have a kid in

:04:13. > :04:15.a particular environment. It is not that good's fault but their parents

:04:16. > :04:20.are middle`class and they will be denied an education because of

:04:21. > :04:28.socialism. Hang on. Timeout! Has anyone got a mallet? ! But if the

:04:29. > :04:33.facts are that there is such a tiny proportion of youngsters who are

:04:34. > :04:36.from very underprivileged backgrounds, those getting free

:04:37. > :04:41.school meals, going to grammar schools, then that has got to be

:04:42. > :04:45.sorted out, hasn't it? So increase the number of grammar schools. That

:04:46. > :04:51.is a big political decision. Exactly. This is about party

:04:52. > :04:56.politics, not economics. This is about politics. Because socialism

:04:57. > :05:07.will not allow it to happen, we are going to deny... Do we have a

:05:08. > :05:12.socialist in the room? We do not. A libertarian in Government? Not as

:05:13. > :05:15.libertarian as you. The better off in society have always had choice

:05:16. > :05:21.and the poor never had. For some reason the way you give the poor

:05:22. > :05:25.choice is to deny everybody else. It is not denying everyone. It is. If

:05:26. > :05:30.you don't have the money to knock up a view more grammar schools, what do

:05:31. > :05:35.you do? You have got the money but you have not got the political will

:05:36. > :05:42.to do so. Let's move on, please, to the Guardian. Fraud trials in

:05:43. > :05:46.jeopardy as lawyers rebel. A case has collapsed because of barristers

:05:47. > :05:50.protesting about the cuts in legal aid. This is a big story because the

:05:51. > :05:55.Government wants to cut the legal aid bill by a million. And

:05:56. > :06:03.barristers taking on these cases will see their fees cut by 30%.

:06:04. > :06:06.Their words demonstrations earlier this week `` there were

:06:07. > :06:14.demonstrations earlier this year. And now a landmark fraud case, it

:06:15. > :06:18.has been stopped by Judge Leonard. He is not going to give the

:06:19. > :06:23.prosecution any time... In fact he is closing the case because the five

:06:24. > :06:26.men accused could not be guaranteed fair representation because no

:06:27. > :06:30.barristers wanted to take on the case. They searched high and wide

:06:31. > :06:34.and they could not find anyone to take it on. In fact the person who

:06:35. > :06:41.pushed this in the court was Alex Cameron QC, who defended one of the

:06:42. > :06:49.defendants free of charge. I was a lawyer for 20 years and I come from

:06:50. > :06:52.the spirit that says that even somebody caught red`handed... Even

:06:53. > :06:56.those guys that killed Lee Rigby, you could not be even more caught

:06:57. > :07:01.red`handed than them, they are entitled in my view to free,

:07:02. > :07:06.independent, legal representation. That is the hallmark of a good

:07:07. > :07:09.society. I don't care who you are. You are entitled to bed. This

:07:10. > :07:14.Government is saying it will deny people that because it will put

:07:15. > :07:21.barristers in the position where they can't afford to do the job. Is

:07:22. > :07:29.that really the case? It is. The public perception is that they all

:07:30. > :07:35.owe so much `` all earning so much. The reality is that many solicitors

:07:36. > :07:39.are not earning anything at all. They are representing the challenged

:07:40. > :07:45.in society. There are two aspect of this that very important it is

:07:46. > :07:49.irrelevant. I think they are appealing to their tribe, like the

:07:50. > :07:53.Daily Telegraph, but it is irrelevant if the Prime Minister's

:07:54. > :08:01.brother is involved. Absolutely irrelevant. It is a journalistic

:08:02. > :08:06.point. It is appealing to the tribe. It is challenging the Prime Minister

:08:07. > :08:12.with his own brother. But that is not relevant. The Guardian is right

:08:13. > :08:16.and on sound ground when they say these people are not getting

:08:17. > :08:20.representation because people are being denied justice because of

:08:21. > :08:24.that. And also, in a very concentrated fraud trial, it is time

:08:25. > :08:29.to look at the way we administer justice. You cannot expect 12 good

:08:30. > :08:37.men and women to take on complicated stuff. There are several big fraud

:08:38. > :08:43.cases down the line. Today it is fraud, tomorrow criminal cases. You

:08:44. > :08:48.probably need to move towards two or three judges, not one, sitting there

:08:49. > :08:53.in some sort of trial. All right. Let's go on to the Daily Express.

:08:54. > :08:58.This is their take on rising house prices. The record rise in house

:08:59. > :09:04.prices, rising at the fastest rate since 2007, as values soar by ?1500

:09:05. > :09:09.per month. The way they have written that, one might think that it is a

:09:10. > :09:16.good thing. You might think that. They have been banging on about this

:09:17. > :09:19.since the credit crunch. About 2007. They have been trying to talk up the

:09:20. > :09:26.market for such a long time but those of us in the housing market

:09:27. > :09:30.who did buy in 2005 to 2007, taking a punt, many of us who bought

:09:31. > :09:35.outside the South East bubble, are still in negative equity, in

:09:36. > :09:38.Birmingham, Newcastle, so it is a tale of two countries. They are

:09:39. > :09:43.trying to talk this up but I suspect we will see what happened last time.

:09:44. > :09:54.Last time prices rose this past was June, 2007, just before the crunch

:09:55. > :10:00.and the collapse. `` this fast. And a similar story, Bank of England

:10:01. > :10:04.fears over property spiral. They are looking at the glass being half

:10:05. > :10:10.empty. I did not think I would agree with Henry then! I think he is spot

:10:11. > :10:15.on. There is one country called London, possibly a bit wider,

:10:16. > :10:22.possibly within the M25, and both of those stories are absolutely right.

:10:23. > :10:27.If you go outside. Out to Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds,

:10:28. > :10:30.Newcastle, Cardiff, Belfast, this recovery is big and sustainable and

:10:31. > :10:35.it has nothing to do with house prices. It has everything to do with

:10:36. > :10:39.all the other big drivers of an economy. What they are saying in the

:10:40. > :10:44.Financial Times is that if you have property prices and if you have

:10:45. > :10:47.information and you begin the bubble, and you are quite right,

:10:48. > :10:51.Henry, you get to the point where you have to do something about it,

:10:52. > :10:56.which can only mean interest rate rises. The moment you have that,

:10:57. > :11:00.forget the housing bubble. You choke off access to capital for others.

:11:01. > :11:05.One of them is consumers, meaning retail goes down, but the other is

:11:06. > :11:10.business of course. And don't gloss over that. If you have got a small

:11:11. > :11:14.business then getting back into work and suddenly being charged twice as

:11:15. > :11:20.much for it because Mrs McGuinness's has has gone up in

:11:21. > :11:28.Kensington, you have a problem. `` house. I agree! You have agreed on

:11:29. > :11:31.what seems to be blatantly clear to a lot of people that there is

:11:32. > :11:35.clearly a huge rise in housing prices in the South East and this

:11:36. > :11:43.area is doing particularly well. It has not quite caught on in other

:11:44. > :11:46.places. It has not. OK, but it is catching on. But if there is a crash

:11:47. > :11:51.in London, that will affect everywhere else anyway. There will

:11:52. > :12:03.not be a crash in London. Far too dynamic. I am not too sure. I can

:12:04. > :12:13.not take a headline seriously when it has the... It might be a false

:12:14. > :12:18.bottom. The false fess! I am far more worried about what the

:12:19. > :12:24.FT is saying! That was so pompous of you!

:12:25. > :12:32.But true! One final story ` the Metro. Peaches ` the final echo of

:12:33. > :12:35.her mother. Very, very sad. I remember, didn't the morning after

:12:36. > :12:40.she was found dead, the picture of her and her mother taken many years

:12:41. > :12:47.ago. A lot of people responded by being angry with the Metro, thinking

:12:48. > :12:52.it was tasteless. In this case people did wonder if she did take

:12:53. > :12:57.something. Her friend are saying we should remember the former wild

:12:58. > :13:04.child who became a responsible mother. It would appear from text

:13:05. > :13:10.cog report that she may have taken heroin. I have two takes. Kids are

:13:11. > :13:16.dying of heroin overdose every day. They don't get on the front of the

:13:17. > :13:21.Metro. The reason is because who she is, not what she did. The good ` if

:13:22. > :13:28.it is the right word out of this ` this f this is a wake`up call... But

:13:29. > :13:34.it never is. We all hope it could be. You will be

:13:35. > :13:39.back in an hour and look at some more of the stories behind the

:13:40. > :13:45.headlines. Many thanks for that. Gerry Adams remains in police

:13:46. > :13:47.custody. I will speak to Ian Paisley Junior, that will be live from

:13:48. > :14:08.Belfast. Now time for Sportsday. Hello. Good evening welcome to

:14:09. > :14:17.Sportsday. The headlines: Chelsea assistant manager, Rui Faria, has

:14:18. > :14:23.been given a six`match stadium ban. Batting coach Graham Gooch becomes

:14:24. > :14:24.the latest casualty in a new era for English cricket. Mark Selby
