:00:00. > :00:00.up a stage of the British baton relay. The Commonwealth really is on

:00:00. > :00:25.a tour of Scotland ahead of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Hello

:00:26. > :00:33.and welcome to a look ahead. We are looking at the papers. I am joined

:00:34. > :00:38.by two reporters. Let's take a look at the front pages. The Independent

:00:39. > :00:44.leads with the reported execution of dozens of Iraqi soldiers by

:00:45. > :00:49.insurgents. The Financial Times also highlights the crisis and says

:00:50. > :00:54.President Obama is deciding whether to launch the strikes. The Daily

:00:55. > :01:06.Telegraph has the same we'd but focuses on obese patients having to

:01:07. > :01:12.have any chess beds widened. The express revealed that delaying

:01:13. > :01:23.retirement by two years good boost pensions by 25%. And Tony Blair

:01:24. > :01:29.distancing himself from any responsibility for the problems in

:01:30. > :01:36.Iraq. The Daily Mail looks ahead to the football game against Uruguay.

:01:37. > :01:40.Now that you would expect on a number of front pages. Islamist

:01:41. > :01:47.execute dozens of soldiers as Iraq slides towards sectarian war, says

:01:48. > :01:51.the Independent. The pictures have not been independently verified yet

:01:52. > :02:02.but the feeling is that given the tactics used these beheadings and

:02:03. > :02:07.executions might be true. You'll macro it is the latest brutality

:02:08. > :02:13.across the region. As the Independent puts it, the country is

:02:14. > :02:21.sliding to all`out sectarian war. The advance of Isis is slowing as

:02:22. > :02:27.they reach Shia dominated areas. It depends on whether it should be

:02:28. > :02:34.allowed to turn into an all`out sectarian war. It is the tragic and

:02:35. > :02:41.brutal situation. Any analysis of who is gaining territory? It is a

:02:42. > :02:49.volatile situation in Iraq, the government seems to think it is very

:02:50. > :02:54.gaining the upper hand in places. That needs to be treated with

:02:55. > :02:57.caution. These pictures have not been verified and while it is

:02:58. > :03:06.reasonable to assume Isis are brutal and have a trademark of death squads

:03:07. > :03:12.and headings, to assume they carried out these attacks, there have not

:03:13. > :03:19.been any independent eyewitnesses of bodies or believes. The figures are

:03:20. > :03:24.they being wildly in figures of the arrested Iraqi army, it is going

:03:25. > :03:33.from hundreds to thousands. We really just do not know. This is

:03:34. > :03:40.what Isis wants us to think and once the Iraqi army to think. This is

:03:41. > :03:47.propaganda. It is debatable as to how much support they have in the

:03:48. > :03:52.wider Suni population. Some of the soldiers who appeared to be killed

:03:53. > :04:01.in the massacre were Suni, it was not just Shia soldiers who died.

:04:02. > :04:06.That is true. It will not be supported by a great number in the

:04:07. > :04:11.region. They have not been allowed to take power in the region because

:04:12. > :04:17.of mistakes that have been made by Baghdad and the West. Either way,

:04:18. > :04:26.this type of intimidation is very typical of Isis. They are letting

:04:27. > :04:31.people know what is in store for them letting people flee. They have

:04:32. > :04:36.been able to sweep through the region with these kind of tactics

:04:37. > :04:44.and that may stop given that it is getting closer to Baghdad. It speaks

:04:45. > :04:49.to the discontent with the current Prime Minister. He is the one we

:04:50. > :04:57.have been throwing money at. He has been the strong man entrusted to

:04:58. > :05:04.hold it all together and has only entrusted brutal authorities Ian

:05:05. > :05:10.tactics of his own. It speaks of discontent with that government that

:05:11. > :05:14.Isis have been able to do this. They have been providing the very social

:05:15. > :05:21.services that the Iraqi government has failed to do so the fact people

:05:22. > :05:27.are acquiescing if not actively supporting their military successes

:05:28. > :05:31.is no great surprise in that context. Onto the Financial Times,

:05:32. > :05:41.how they are treating this story. The headline is, Iraq militants

:05:42. > :05:47.advance slows. A few days ago the Iraqis were saying we need some

:05:48. > :05:54.international support for this, now it appears they feel they might have

:05:55. > :05:59.regain the initiative. A couple of days ago Barack Obama was saying he

:06:00. > :06:08.needed time to think about this. He is under pressure from some back

:06:09. > :06:16.home. Now we enter American politics when it comes to war. The case of

:06:17. > :06:24.this particular story reports a South Carolina Republican who says

:06:25. > :06:26.we must cooperate with Baghdad. Anyone who understands this will

:06:27. > :06:36.know this is an extraordinary U`turn. She he is one of the most

:06:37. > :06:41.outspoken conservatives. For him to make this enormous U`turn speaks

:06:42. > :06:45.partly to the turnaround in the situation in Iraq itself but also it

:06:46. > :06:51.says something about American politics. The Republican party. That

:06:52. > :06:57.they would make such an extraordinary about`face. Not just

:06:58. > :07:02.about Barack Obama but in order to do this constant sense of having to

:07:03. > :07:07.be involved and moving with the tide to be seen as driving the situation

:07:08. > :07:11.in the Middle East. For a party who until recently was being macro Iran

:07:12. > :07:19.is the greatest threat to world peace, to say we have to stand by

:07:20. > :07:25.these guys as we take on the Suni militants. Since McCain on words

:07:26. > :07:29.they have been calling for military strikes which, for anyone who has

:07:30. > :07:37.been following this since 2003 knows, it is pretty much the worst

:07:38. > :07:43.thing you can do at the moment. It is one thing to see a war you do not

:07:44. > :07:49.like but within a matter of days to change your mind about who the war

:07:50. > :07:56.should be against. I have been reading this article about what

:07:57. > :08:04.Lindsay Graham has been saying to CBS in America. Why did we not do

:08:05. > :08:14.away with Stalin? He was not as bad as Hitler. It is better to deal with

:08:15. > :08:23.Iran than what is going on in Iraq. It is the antithesis of the sensible

:08:24. > :08:28.vision of the world to say make a deal with Stalin because he is

:08:29. > :08:34.better than Hitler. It is a childlike analogy to make. This

:08:35. > :08:39.whole debate is full of childlike analysis. One thing which keeps

:08:40. > :08:44.coming up is was it better under Saddam Hussein? I do not know how

:08:45. > :08:50.many more Iraqis have to die before we can answer that question with a

:08:51. > :09:00.yes. It clearly was. The Daily Telegraph says you Millie did and

:09:01. > :09:09.executed by jihadist firing squads. `` humiliated and executed. The

:09:10. > :09:16.picture shows men taking aim at what appears to be Iraqi soldiers in

:09:17. > :09:22.plain clothes. Tony Blair has been on the TV today heavily criticised

:09:23. > :09:25.for putting the blame on the current generation of British politicians

:09:26. > :09:33.and also saying the atmosphere and conditions of the moment are to

:09:34. > :09:38.blame for what is happening now, not the 2003 invasion which he was keen

:09:39. > :09:45.to lead us to. A lot of this blueprint for peace in the Middle

:09:46. > :09:50.East is quite sensible. The problem is that you can never detach it from

:09:51. > :09:55.the man himself and his record. One year ago he was advocating a war in

:09:56. > :10:09.Syria. More importantly, you cannot detach it from the fact in 2003 he

:10:10. > :10:15.with. One might say in order to make an omelette you have to break a few

:10:16. > :10:19.ex`at this advice comes from the man who threw eggs on the floor, stamped

:10:20. > :10:26.on them and said this makes a complete meal. I want to note the

:10:27. > :10:30.moment at which some of his politicians who are now getting this

:10:31. > :10:34.advice, who were around then, at what point will be turned to ours

:10:35. > :10:38.and the macro sorry for creating this victory should and now

:10:39. > :10:47.arrogantly telling us how to clear up. Was it the initial determination

:10:48. > :10:52.to see regime change that was wrong? They did not have a plan in

:10:53. > :11:02.place for when the country fell. There was no need for the invasion,

:11:03. > :11:06.it was illegal and contravened all the conventions. There was a brutal

:11:07. > :11:17.dictator in place. That is remove dictators, why tech Saddam

:11:18. > :11:23.Hussein? The lack of consideration for Iraqis and not having any kind

:11:24. > :11:23.of follow`through or that the state was completely gutted, all of the

:11:24. > :11:27.institutions dismantled, the military and

:11:28. > :11:31.security, then these sectarian tensions were actively

:11:32. > :11:44.the Coalition Government in the aftermath will stop. Full. I want to

:11:45. > :11:54.move onto one other story on the Telegraph. I'd macro NHS having to

:11:55. > :12:02.reinforce beds to cope with beasts patients. It is just one of many

:12:03. > :12:13.measures to cope with morbidly beasts patients. Politicians have

:12:14. > :12:19.been banging on about not messing with lives of the individual. I

:12:20. > :12:25.agree with them, we do not want to be told what to do. Things like in

:12:26. > :12:31.schools, sports should be important and you should eat healthy food. We

:12:32. > :12:36.need to be honest about the weight problem in this country. To talk

:12:37. > :12:40.about it in popular culture and reintroduce a sense of self

:12:41. > :12:45.responsibility, people taking responsibility for their own

:12:46. > :12:54.condition. One in ten deaths in England and Wales is related to

:12:55. > :12:58.obesity so this is a health crisis. There are concerns over the cost of

:12:59. > :13:04.alcohol, we learned when we can smoke, the marketing of tobacco, why

:13:05. > :13:09.not food? That is a very good question. There should be this

:13:10. > :13:14.debate and some restrictions. This might be where we disagree. The

:13:15. > :13:20.sugar campaign should run similarly to the one we had recently on salt

:13:21. > :13:26.so that the companies that make all this high sugar content food and

:13:27. > :13:31.drink are required to label and find alternatives. That is one side of

:13:32. > :13:37.the debate. There is a correlation we cannot ignore between austerity

:13:38. > :13:46.driven poverty and obesity. That has already been shown in certain

:13:47. > :13:53.sectors. That is it from the papers for this hour. He will be back just

:13:54. > :13:58.after 11. Steve files on BBC News. Our world affairs editor offers his

:13:59. > :14:08.opinion on the crisis in Iraq. It is time to re`enter

:14:09. > :14:31.the gaming grid. Welcome to downtown Los Angeles,

:14:32. > :14:35.Hollywood is seven miles
