:00:00. > :00:00.place in Gaza tonight as Israel launched a major ground offensive

:00:00. > :00:00.against Palestinian militants. It follows nine days of air strikes by

:00:00. > :00:00.Israel, which they insist are necessary to halt rocket attacks by

:00:07. > :00:09.Hamas militants. More than 200 Palestinians and one Israeli have

:00:10. > :00:14.died since this latest conflict began.

:00:15. > :00:23.Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing

:00:24. > :00:26.us tomorrow. With me here in London is Oliver Wright, the Whitehall

:00:27. > :00:30.Editor of The Independent and in our Glasgow studio, Kevin McKenna,

:00:31. > :00:38.Scottish Columnist for The Observer. Tomorrow's front pages are dominated

:00:39. > :00:41.by the plane crash in Ukraine. The Independent shows burnt out

:00:42. > :00:46.fuselage on the ground and describes bodies scattered over fields.

:00:47. > :00:50.A rescuer is pictured amid the wreckage on the front of the Metro.

:00:51. > :00:55.The Telegraph says that wreckage was strewn over an area nine miles wide.

:00:56. > :00:58.A pro`Russian militant is shown standing over the scene in The

:00:59. > :01:04.Times. It reports 154 Dutch people and six Britons are among the dead.

:01:05. > :01:11."Murder in the Sky" is the headline on the Guardian.

:01:12. > :01:14.The Mirror describes "Slaughter at 33,000 Feet".

:01:15. > :01:18.There's a stark message on the front of the Mail: there'll be hell to pay

:01:19. > :01:21.if it emerges Russia is involved. And finally 'Putin's missile' is

:01:22. > :01:28.behind the disaster according to the Sun, blaming pro`Russian

:01:29. > :01:44.separatists. There are many different strands to the stories.

:01:45. > :01:48.Let's look at the Independent. Pro` Russian rebels are suspected of the

:01:49. > :01:56.attack. There are a lot of pictures to choose from. It gives you a sense

:01:57. > :02:01.of how or promote this part of Ukraine was, which will make

:02:02. > :02:11.it tricky to investigate. I think the Independent can be proud of its

:02:12. > :02:15.story. It is a very dramatic picture. There is a separatist

:02:16. > :02:29.investigating the wreckage. I am being told that the Malaysians

:02:30. > :02:35.will take quite a long time to get to the crash site. There are reports

:02:36. > :02:39.that Ukrainian government forces are finding it difficult to get to the

:02:40. > :02:48.crash site because it is being groomed over by the separatists. ``

:02:49. > :02:55.combed. There is an inference that if they locate the black box, it

:02:56. > :03:00.will go straight to Moscow. Then the narrative will start to be dictated

:03:01. > :03:13.by the Russians and President Putin. There are a lot of

:03:14. > :03:25.nationalities involved. We have the story about slaughter at 33,000 feet

:03:26. > :03:29.in The Mirror. We have most of the people on board are from the

:03:30. > :03:39.Netherlands. It is an international tragedy. The front page is grimly

:03:40. > :03:45.compelling. The wreckage is still smouldering. There are a lot of

:03:46. > :03:59.images on the Internet that are far worse. You need to pick one that can

:04:00. > :04:04.convey the gravity of the situation, without showing all the awfulness.

:04:05. > :04:12.It is a difficult place to investigate. There were reports from

:04:13. > :04:17.the United States with Joe Biden saying that American satellites,

:04:18. > :04:21.which have been monitoring that part of the world carefully before this

:04:22. > :04:27.happened, had picked up evidence of a surface to air missiles. It

:04:28. > :04:34.probably won't take them long to identify where that came from.

:04:35. > :04:36.Whether they can get people on the ground to find out where that

:04:37. > :04:50.missile launcher is now will be difficult. Let's look at the Sun.

:04:51. > :04:56.They talk about whether the separatists had the weaponry to

:04:57. > :05:09.bring an ally no down at 30,000 feet. `` an airliner down. No one is

:05:10. > :05:16.admitting the blame at the moment. There are claims and counterclaims.

:05:17. > :05:23.The Sun is doing what it does best. There is no equivocation. They are

:05:24. > :05:31.making a lot of the fact of the altitude of the plane was such that

:05:32. > :05:42.only a serious piece of military hardware could have brought it down.

:05:43. > :05:52.They then pointed straight out Putin. That is just like them. They

:05:53. > :05:56.don't sit on the fence. The Daily Mail is looking at the darker

:05:57. > :06:04.consequences. They say that this has very serious implications for the

:06:05. > :06:13.geopolitical situation. Ukraine 's President Petro Poroshenko quoted on

:06:14. > :06:18.Reuters that this was a terrorist attack that is a challenge to the

:06:19. > :06:23.whole world. There were so many people on board, it took off from

:06:24. > :06:32.the Netherlands, it inevitably draws in other countries. Of course it

:06:33. > :06:37.does. This is a very serious problem for Putin. It implicates Russian

:06:38. > :06:43.involvement will stop I think it is too early to say it came from

:06:44. > :06:46.Russian troops. It could have been a missile that was once controlled by

:06:47. > :06:54.the Ukraine that was then seized by the rebels. It is a very complicated

:06:55. > :07:00.situation. A simplistic headline might sell newspapers, but it

:07:01. > :07:06.doesn't always get to the truth. Putin has supported the pro` Russian

:07:07. > :07:18.Ukrainian rebels. It is a very popular course in Russia. `` cause.

:07:19. > :07:23.This is not just about Ukraine now. There are a whole number of

:07:24. > :07:30.nationalities. This is a game changer. That has been said a lot.

:07:31. > :07:39.What will happen? Will there be sanctions? There was evidence over

:07:40. > :07:46.the last few weeks that from the outset of this crisis, Putin had

:07:47. > :07:50.begun to move back and visa restrictions and trade sanctions

:07:51. > :07:57.were beginning to bite and serious negotiations were beginning to

:07:58. > :08:04.occur. Putin must've been taken greatly by surprise by this. He will

:08:05. > :08:09.have immediately gathered his senior ministers. He will not need to be

:08:10. > :08:13.told the implications of this. He will have a short time to come up

:08:14. > :08:19.with a narrative to distance himself. Very few people will

:08:20. > :08:27.believe it. It also poses a dilemma for America. The President is

:08:28. > :08:35.halfway through a second term. He could conceivably say this as

:08:36. > :08:44.someone else 's problem. `` is. In two years, he won't be seeking

:08:45. > :08:49.offers. `` office. But then he could also take action because he won't be

:08:50. > :08:53.around for the consequences. President Obama has had a

:08:54. > :08:59.conversation with Secretary of State John Kerry and his security team

:09:00. > :09:04.about what is happening. We imagine there are Americans on board. It is

:09:05. > :09:10.curious that we had a press conference area and most of the

:09:11. > :09:22.nationalities were announced. By far the largest number of nationalities

:09:23. > :09:26.was from the Netherlands. There are about 60 unaccounted for

:09:27. > :09:32.nationalities on the plane. I wonder if quite a few were Americans and

:09:33. > :09:37.the summer reason, the Americans have asked details to be revealed so

:09:38. > :09:42.that the the authorities can get a clear idea of what happened. If

:09:43. > :09:46.there were a large number of Americans, that would put a lot of

:09:47. > :09:49.pressure on the White House. They would want to know what is happening

:09:50. > :09:59.before they are put under domestic pressure. John McCain said there

:10:00. > :10:03.would be hell to pay. That is very much shooting from the hip. It makes

:10:04. > :10:13.you grateful that he didn't win in 2008. While we are hearing about the

:10:14. > :10:19.nationalities, 295 people died. For Malaysia, this is the second time

:10:20. > :10:25.one of their planes has gone down. There was criticism of the way that

:10:26. > :10:32.relatives were not kept informed when MH 370 went down. The

:10:33. > :10:39.government will want to do everything they can to keep families

:10:40. > :10:45.in the loop. In the passing of time since the downing of the first

:10:46. > :10:51.Malaysian airline, the government, you could have sympathy for them.

:10:52. > :10:59.Since then, nothing of any detail has emerged about the reasons it has

:11:00. > :11:07.come down. One of the more horrific things I have been told earlier was

:11:08. > :11:13.that the first witnesses on the scene in the Ukraine were beginning

:11:14. > :11:24.to take pictures on their iPhones and posting the pitches to Twitter.

:11:25. > :11:29.`` pictures. Some of the images were of passports that were fully intact.

:11:30. > :11:38.You must think that some of the relatives would have been the images

:11:39. > :11:43.inadvertently. That takes the implications of horror even further.

:11:44. > :11:53.It is they 21st`century way of finding out news. Let's move away

:11:54. > :12:02.from the horror. We will go to the Times. It is about the Israel

:12:03. > :12:06.offensive against Gaza. 18,000 reserve soldiers have been called up

:12:07. > :12:15.overnight to try to get Hamas to stop firing rockets into Israel. If

:12:16. > :12:23.it wasn't for the flight, this story would be all over the front pages.

:12:24. > :12:27.It has been pushed inside. The editors will have had their work cut

:12:28. > :12:33.out for them. These are both important stories. I think this will

:12:34. > :12:38.carry on for several days. We don't know what Israel has planned. The

:12:39. > :12:44.operation may be more extensive than we thought and could go on for

:12:45. > :12:50.several days. You think it may have been planned for a while, but I do

:12:51. > :12:54.wonder about the exact timing. I wonder whether it was a cool

:12:55. > :12:57.incidents that while the eyes of the world are facing on the Ukraine,

:12:58. > :13:02.Israel are doing what they were going to do anyway. The timing may

:13:03. > :13:10.be something other than call incidental. There is a sense that it

:13:11. > :13:12.is an escalation when it moves from artillery fire and missiles being

:13:13. > :13:24.sent in overhead to something at ground level. Attention ground

:13:25. > :13:31.troops going in. `` potentially. The figure of 18,000 going in is

:13:32. > :13:37.important because it is 10% of the population of Gaza. This latest

:13:38. > :13:47.escalation centres on the fact, Israel said, that Hamas have been

:13:48. > :13:56.extremely angry and desperate about border restrictions imposed by

:13:57. > :13:59.Egypt. This has led to even further economic difficulties and hardship

:14:00. > :14:07.for the citizens of Gaza. Hamas itself has been unable to pay any of

:14:08. > :14:11.its employees recently. They also have a stark and poignant image of

:14:12. > :14:18.three of the children who were killed on a beach yesterday. Three

:14:19. > :14:23.of them were running away before they were killed by the Israeli 's.

:14:24. > :14:31.The explanation was that they killed the first child in a mistake. They

:14:32. > :14:35.were aiming for rape military police nearby. The children they thought

:14:36. > :14:43.were running away they thought were Hamas militants. We must stop

:14:44. > :14:54.talking about it here and move on to the Herald.

:14:55. > :15:05.A matter of weeks until the Scottish referendum for independence. The yes

:15:06. > :15:12.campaign is getting some traction. Yes, they are leading on a pole

:15:13. > :15:20.which says that 28% of Labour voters now intend to vote yes on September

:15:21. > :15:32.the 18th and that is up in one month by 7%. The deputy leader of the SNP

:15:33. > :15:37.and the deputy first minister was actively wooing Labour voters when

:15:38. > :15:44.she challenged them to reclaim the party and this is obviously having

:15:45. > :15:48.some kind of affect. As part of a story that I was researching, I was

:15:49. > :15:55.out with some volunteers who were going to vote yes in a very working

:15:56. > :16:03.class area and the message coming from the doorsteps in this very big

:16:04. > :16:12.area for Labour was almost blanket support in favour. If this poll is

:16:13. > :16:15.to be believed, Gordon Brown has been epicenter of the pro` union

:16:16. > :16:26.campaign and this will be uncomfortable reading for him `` at

:16:27. > :16:31.the centre. This referendum will be won by those who don't know what

:16:32. > :16:35.they want yet. It has got into such that it is easier for people to say

:16:36. > :16:39.that they support the yes campaign and it is for them to say that they

:16:40. > :16:44.support the no campaign and they say that when they go and talk to

:16:45. > :16:47.people, people who say they don't know are actually not in favour of

:16:48. > :16:53.independence and don't feel that they can say it. Clearly, we are

:16:54. > :16:58.only a couple of months now and this will cause quite a lot of

:16:59. > :17:03.consternation. They could surprise us all on the day when they enter

:17:04. > :17:14.the ballot box and leave their mark. They could be confused. The

:17:15. > :17:23.other thing that conflict takes this `` complicates this is estimating

:17:24. > :17:29.privately anything between 80 or 90% of voters are undecided and if that

:17:30. > :17:36.transpires, it will break all records on European democracy for

:17:37. > :17:41.the percentage of turnout. I take the point that has been made about

:17:42. > :17:46.people finding it easier to say yes but on the other hand, the pattern

:17:47. > :17:54.of newspaper coverage in Scotland on the referendum campaign, probably

:17:55. > :17:56.nine out of ten newspapers in Scotland have by varying degrees

:17:57. > :18:02.supported the no campaign and this poll, as well as talking about the

:18:03. > :18:10.heavy support amongst Weber Mac supporters for yes `` Labour, have

:18:11. > :18:18.put it at 45% which is the highest it has been. Nine weeks before

:18:19. > :18:24.September the 18th, that puts the yes campaign in a position that can

:18:25. > :18:46.be a springboard for victory. That is where we must leave it for

:18:47. > :18:47.tonight. Thank you to my guests. We are going to retain to the
