:00:00. > :00:00.not bid for the World Cup as long as Sepp Blatter is in charge of FIFA.

:00:07. > :00:17.That will be coming up in 15 minutes.

:00:18. > :00:21.Hello and welcome to The Papers. Not our normal studio as you can see `

:00:22. > :00:25.we're live on the banks of the river Clyde to mark the eve of Glasgow

:00:26. > :00:27.2014. With me are Richard Walker, the Editor of The Sunday Herald and

:00:28. > :00:32.Lindsay McIntosh, Scottish Political Editor for The Times. They'll be

:00:33. > :00:35.taking us through their pick of tomorrow morning's stories in just a

:00:36. > :00:41.moment. First let's look at tomorrow's front pages, starting

:00:42. > :00:45.with... The Independent says MPs are warning of a sharp increase in the

:00:46. > :00:46.sale of weaponry to Russia, just as the European Union considers

:00:47. > :00:51.widening sanctions against Moscow over its support for pro`Russian

:00:52. > :00:55.rebels in Eastern Ukraine. They've been blamed, of course, for downing

:00:56. > :00:58.the Malaysian airliner. The Scottish Telegraph says the SNP leader Alex

:00:59. > :01:00.Salmond has broken his own self`imposed ban and already talked

:01:01. > :01:08.about Scottish Independence even before the Commonwealth Games has

:01:09. > :01:11.officially started. The Guardian leads with the Trojan horse report

:01:12. > :01:13.from a former counter`terror chief into allegations of a hardline

:01:14. > :01:19.Muslim take`over of schools in Birmingham. The Mail says David

:01:20. > :01:24.Cameron is under pressure to return donations given by Russian oligarchs

:01:25. > :01:26.to the Conservative Party. The Mirror claims M15 are convinced

:01:27. > :01:33.President Putin sanctioned the assassination of Alexander

:01:34. > :01:35.Litvinenko. The Herald says the Commonwealth Games will showcase a

:01:36. > :01:40.transformed Glasgow to the world, creating benefits that will be felt

:01:41. > :01:43.for generations. And finally, Alex Salmond's pledge to keep politics

:01:44. > :01:55.out of the Games makes the front page of The Scotsman. So let's

:01:56. > :02:06.begin... Richard, in the interest of fairness, you can kick us off. The

:02:07. > :02:10.Telegraph. It is a strange way to report the story. It says that Alex

:02:11. > :02:18.Salmond cannot stop all attacks from coming into the games. But then it

:02:19. > :02:22.also criticizes George Osborne for coming all the way from London.

:02:23. > :02:28.Before we get into this, I should say that your paper is the only one

:02:29. > :02:38.that has come out in favour of the yes campaign. The Times has not come

:02:39. > :02:42.out either way. As I said, it is a strange way to report this story

:02:43. > :02:53.because what happened in reality was that George Osborne came here to

:02:54. > :03:01.talk at the Commonwealth Business Conference and pledged a loss of

:03:02. > :03:05.money. I am sorry, but no one can say that he is not using the

:03:06. > :03:10.Commonwealth Games as a platform to suggest to people that they are

:03:11. > :03:17.better off staying in the union. Or Alex Salmond to reply to that seems

:03:18. > :03:25.perfectly reasonable `` for. I thought he spoke first? He may have

:03:26. > :03:35.but George Osborne was offering... Perhaps bribing is more fitting, and

:03:36. > :03:41.to suggest that it was Alex Salmond who has begun this, it is not the

:03:42. > :03:44.truth I am afraid. I think the Telegraph take on this is quite

:03:45. > :03:48.interesting because what they have done is picked up a quote from Alex

:03:49. > :03:54.Salmond today where he has said that he is going to have a self`denial

:03:55. > :03:59.pledge on talking about politics during the Commonwealth Games. He

:04:00. > :04:04.has said that he will get provocation from George Osborne. It

:04:05. > :04:10.is not exactly the strongest political statement but what we know

:04:11. > :04:19.is that Alex Salmond does have a tendency to use sporting events for

:04:20. > :04:30.political gain. Wimbledon and the poorly judged use of the word

:04:31. > :04:35.Sco`lympians. It is slightly dodgy. However, the comment he made at

:04:36. > :04:40.George Osborne is a jibe rather than a political statement. In terms of

:04:41. > :04:44.what George Osborne said that this conference today, what he's talking

:04:45. > :04:51.about is the city deal which has been to Glasgow which is money from

:04:52. > :04:56.the UK government for infrastructure investments which will be matched by

:04:57. > :05:00.the Scottish government. What he is saying is that this is the business

:05:01. > :05:09.branding that we can do as part of the UK. In terms of breaking his

:05:10. > :05:16.self`imposed ban on political speaking, they haven't technically

:05:17. > :05:22.started. When does it start? It could be a long 12 days for him. We

:05:23. > :05:29.will give him the fact that they have not started yet. It is a return

:05:30. > :05:45.to some of the previous statements he has made. It is not a statement

:05:46. > :05:52.of intent. It seems harmless enough to point out when famous Olympians

:05:53. > :06:05.and so forth are Scottish. Or could be a backlash, couldn't there ``

:06:06. > :06:11.there. If he is using it as a platform for politics? He has just

:06:12. > :06:14.said that he is going to do that so I since it is a bit unfair for

:06:15. > :06:21.people to say that he has done that since it hasn't even started. It was

:06:22. > :06:34.a jibe, as Lindsay said, not politics. It is also the front page

:06:35. > :06:39.of the Scotsman. The Scotsman reports relatively straight. I

:06:40. > :06:43.haven't entered into the debate for the Commonwealth Games are

:06:44. > :07:06.concerned. I would like to point out that it takes two sides and I think

:07:07. > :07:13.if the Better Together is going to do this, they have to be quiet about

:07:14. > :07:24.it. He is not completely avoiding politics . Maybe let us have a

:07:25. > :07:27.fortnight of celebrating the Commonwealth Games rather than

:07:28. > :07:32.having this debate. We have had it for the last two years. It has been

:07:33. > :07:37.incessant and rightly after the Commonwealth Games it will continue

:07:38. > :07:45.but let's take a moment and breathe. I agree with that but both

:07:46. > :07:51.sides should do it. Let's take a look at this. Politicians ready to

:07:52. > :07:55.welcome the world to the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

:07:56. > :08:00.They are focusing very much on the games themselves and the investment

:08:01. > :08:10.it has brought. It is a great image on the front page of The Herald. It

:08:11. > :08:19.is exactly what Lascaux should be doing `` Glasgow. They are talking

:08:20. > :08:23.about the transformation of the city which has been there for everyone to

:08:24. > :08:27.see and also on the investment that we have had and a little bit of the

:08:28. > :08:38.politics. A touch on it towards the end of that story `` they. In terms

:08:39. > :08:44.of the Commonwealth Games themselves, do you think there will

:08:45. > :08:47.be an effect in terms of confidence? When you look back on 2012 and the

:08:48. > :08:54.way people in London felt after that, think it will have the same

:08:55. > :09:01.kind of impact relatively? I think so. I took the train today and I saw

:09:02. > :09:08.these massive posters in Queen Street that were all positive

:09:09. > :09:15.messages and accompanying images and as soon as you get there, you think

:09:16. > :09:19.something great is happening there. I saw a report on the economic

:09:20. > :09:21.benefits of the Olympics in London and hopefully we will see something

:09:22. > :09:28.similar in terms of the Commonwealth Games. I think so. I thought the way

:09:29. > :09:42.they handled the London Olympics was brilliant. I thought that the

:09:43. > :09:51.depiction of Great Britain was fantastic. But even so, I still

:09:52. > :09:59.thought it was powerful for everyone. I think ours will be

:10:00. > :10:03.celebratory. There is a lot to celebrate about this city and our

:10:04. > :10:08.country. It has been transformed and I'm really looking forward to seeing

:10:09. > :10:12.how it comes out tomorrow. There is certainly a sense of celebration

:10:13. > :10:22.coming musicians on the streets and so forth. What helps is the

:10:23. > :10:29.weather. It is beautiful even now. Positively balmy. It is not always

:10:30. > :10:34.like that I have to admit but it is fantastic when it is and the timing

:10:35. > :10:38.could not be better. The streets are packed with people as you said,

:10:39. > :10:43.people from all over the world and there is a real sense of

:10:44. > :10:50.anticipation and celebration and I think that will just told as the

:10:51. > :10:58.event goes on `` build. The opening ceremony is tomorrow evening. Are

:10:59. > :11:04.you looking forward to it? I am. The organiser of the games has promised

:11:05. > :11:08.an opening ceremony that is uniquely Glasgow. I think that will be

:11:09. > :11:11.perfect if they take the best of our city and Scotland and show it to a

:11:12. > :11:20.global audience. It will be wonderful. You were going to be

:11:21. > :11:27.there Richard, can you see the crane on the other side of the river

:11:28. > :11:32.behind us? I threw myself off it. I was in a harness at the time but it

:11:33. > :11:42.was still very scary. I do think I deserve it. Did you enjoy it? I

:11:43. > :11:49.don't think there was any enjoyment at all. I was terrified. The worst

:11:50. > :11:56.moment was stepping off and leaping into the abyss. There was no good

:11:57. > :12:00.side to it. I expected to feel elation when I got to the ground but

:12:01. > :12:08.I am still recovering from the terror of that five minutes

:12:09. > :12:11.beforehand. Perhaps it will all feel worthwhile when you are at the

:12:12. > :12:21.opening ceremony tomorrow. That is the most I can hope for. He had

:12:22. > :12:26.managed to keep it quite quiet. We haven't had more than a few hints

:12:27. > :12:32.about what will happen. Not to bring negativity into it but we have heard

:12:33. > :12:40.that some things have been pulled from the event. Hopefully it will

:12:41. > :12:43.not impact on what they have. I have heard that they will put on a

:12:44. > :12:51.phenomenal event for Glasgow and Scotland. I think it is good that

:12:52. > :12:57.they listen to public opinion. I think people complain that certain

:12:58. > :13:05.parts of Glasgow are not quick to benefit from the games and residents

:13:06. > :13:10.don't always so good about it. I think, in general the feeling is one

:13:11. > :13:15.of support for the Commonwealth Games. I think that will only

:13:16. > :13:25.improve and increase as the day goes on. Enjoy tomorrow evening and thank

:13:26. > :13:46.you both. That's it for The Papers. Next on BBC News it's Sportsday.

:13:47. > :13:51.Hello and welcome to Sportsday, I'm Nina Warhurst. FA Chairman Greg Dyke

:13:52. > :13:54.tells MPs the England will not bid for FIFA tournaments as long as Sepp

:13:55. > :13:58.Blatter's in charge. Alistair Cook keeps his captaincy as England name

:13:59. > :13:59.their squad for the third Test against India at
