:00:00. > :00:00.cricketers finally ended their long wait for a test victory. That is in

:00:00. > :00:16.Sportsday in 15 minutes, after The Papers.

:00:17. > :00:23.Welcome to our look ahead at what the papers will bring us tomorrow.

:00:24. > :00:28.With this, old friends, the home affairs editor from the London

:00:29. > :00:33.Evening Standard, I mean all that in long`standing! LAUGHTER And Louise

:00:34. > :00:37.Cooper, financial analyst. Let's look at the front pages. The FT

:00:38. > :00:41.reports European businesses starting to feel the effects of sanctions on

:00:42. > :00:45.Russia. The Telegraph has a story about households being forced to pay

:00:46. > :00:49.higher rates of stamp duty. The Metro carries a story about a TV

:00:50. > :00:52.interview where a UN official broke down in tears saying his

:00:53. > :01:03.organisation was at breaking point in Gaza. The Daily Mail leads on a

:01:04. > :01:05.driver who killed a man using to mobile phones at the wheel of her

:01:06. > :01:08.car. The Guardian reports of the conflict in Gaza, saying the number

:01:09. > :01:10.killed is now greater than in both previous rounds of fighting between

:01:11. > :01:13.Israel and Hamas. The express has a story on a funding boost for the NHS

:01:14. > :01:15.to help cancer, and finally the Mirror describes how a car on wealth

:01:16. > :01:19.Games cyclist from Sierra Leone was held in a collision for four days

:01:20. > :01:21.before being cleared because of fears about Ebola virus ``

:01:22. > :01:25.Commonwealth Games cyclist. We will start with the Guardian leading with

:01:26. > :01:31.Gaza, saying the death toll has passed 1400. This is a hugely

:01:32. > :01:35.relevant story still, but as we have just reported, there has been

:01:36. > :01:38.breaking news in the last few minutes suggesting movement towards

:01:39. > :01:43.a humanitarian truce armour and hopes of a durable cease`fire.

:01:44. > :01:49.Because this is very surprising, isn't it, Martin, this news, because

:01:50. > :01:52.it didn't seem that either side felt inclined even to start mentioning

:01:53. > :01:56.the cease`fire at the moment. No, we had a short pause before, then it

:01:57. > :02:00.resumed, and the Israelis since that time have said they are determined

:02:01. > :02:03.to carry on until they finish their objectives, which include destroying

:02:04. > :02:07.the tunnels and stopping rocket fire. It seemed like they were

:02:08. > :02:13.determined to press on pretty much at all costs. And yes, as you say,

:02:14. > :02:19.suddenly we have this three`day window, apparently, where there will

:02:20. > :02:21.be an attempt to negotiate, which still raises quite a lot of problems

:02:22. > :02:24.potentially, but it at least gives them some time, hopefully, to try to

:02:25. > :02:27.resolve the key issues. Always tempting to clutch at reasons for

:02:28. > :02:32.things happening in the Middle East, but it is a dangerous thing to do.

:02:33. > :02:35.It does follow the US coming out with its strongest statement yet.

:02:36. > :02:39.Exactly, and I find that interesting. I was reading a piece

:02:40. > :02:43.from the Israeli point of view saying it depends who criticises us,

:02:44. > :02:50.whether we take notice. Clearly the White House criticism is probably

:02:51. > :02:54.the most important critic of their actions from an Israeli point of

:02:55. > :03:01.view. I am sorry to be a pessimist about this, but when I look at this

:03:02. > :03:08.deeply devastating, horrendous humanitarian mess, I just think... I

:03:09. > :03:14.don't see, over the long term, any structural improvement. Cyclic

:03:15. > :03:20.thing, it goes from slightly better do is likely worst, `` sick lately.

:03:21. > :03:25.But over the long term has been been any improvement? When then Nobel

:03:26. > :03:30.Peace Prize is given out to both sides ten, 15, 20 years ago, yet

:03:31. > :03:35.guess what, we are back to one of the biggest death tolls we have seen

:03:36. > :03:39.in the entire history of the two fides. And I think also of course,

:03:40. > :03:45.that very point is made, but also the Israeli have `` have stopped

:03:46. > :03:47.because it becomes clear that all they are achieving, they are

:03:48. > :03:51.achieving something, stopping the tunnels, I can understand why they

:03:52. > :03:57.want to do that, but there is a danger that they are just hardening

:03:58. > :04:02.opinion, consolidating Hamas, which actually, Hamas's power and

:04:03. > :04:04.influence in the Gaza Strip, actually was under threat fairly

:04:05. > :04:08.recently after the kidnappings, the fallout from that, they were looking

:04:09. > :04:11.weaker, and now they seem to have been strengthened by this, and as

:04:12. > :04:18.you say, from a long point of view we might get a resolution. In the

:04:19. > :04:25.short`term the station hostility which would be fantastic ``

:04:26. > :04:30.cessation of hostilities. It seems so far away, even to get a

:04:31. > :04:37.short`term cease`fire to stick would seem almost a miracle. What I was

:04:38. > :04:43.surprised that was the numbers, 1400 dead in Gaza, Palestinian officials

:04:44. > :04:47.say 8200 people have been wounded. That is an extraordinarily large...

:04:48. > :04:51.Almost 10,000 people. Not that many people live in Gaza and that is an

:04:52. > :04:56.extraordinary amount of people. Civilians and children in

:04:57. > :05:00.particular. The Palestinian authorities say 80% were civilians.

:05:01. > :05:03.One thing that does have to happen of course, it is quite hard to see

:05:04. > :05:07.how this will happen, is that from an Israeli point of view, some of

:05:08. > :05:13.these rockets have to be stopped us well in the long term, because that

:05:14. > :05:16.keeps provoking, every couple of years, these attacks and these great

:05:17. > :05:20.onslaughts. It is not the first time we have seen this. It is the worst

:05:21. > :05:25.one but we have seen it two years ago and previously. Moving on to the

:05:26. > :05:32.FT if we can, European companies feeling Russia paying. Ox wagon

:05:33. > :05:36.voicing concern occurs the sanctions over Russia and Ukraine are biting

:05:37. > :05:42.`` false wagon. What has changed over the last ten or 15 years are

:05:43. > :05:47.European companies doing massive amounts of business in Russia, more

:05:48. > :05:50.than ever. They were all told to do business there because it has great

:05:51. > :05:53.growth and they are all doing business there and now they're

:05:54. > :06:00.Russian business could be taken away from them. It is not just... You

:06:01. > :06:04.have BT, Rosner, a third BP's oil production, Adidas selling a lot

:06:05. > :06:10.there, so many big European companies earning good profits in

:06:11. > :06:14.Russia, which could be taken away. Unintended consequences sometimes of

:06:15. > :06:18.sanctions. They are not necessarily unintended. They are affecting

:06:19. > :06:22.companies that wouldn't be targeted in the first instance. You wonder

:06:23. > :06:28.about Adidas, what is behind that, because it cannot surely be

:06:29. > :06:33.oligarchs. There is a consumer boom in Russia, the greater the middle

:06:34. > :06:38.classes stop Lee I understand that the sanctions do not affect every

:06:39. > :06:46.person in Russia. They backed currency exchange rates. And also

:06:47. > :06:50.sentiment towards Western brands. `` affect currency exchange rates.

:06:51. > :06:54.Europe can't afford `` I said Europe can't afford sanctions against

:06:55. > :06:58.Russia but the downing of MH17 has changed that and I now wonder how

:06:59. > :07:03.much damage they are willing to do to the European economy. I think we

:07:04. > :07:09.should do some damage, actually, and I am not convinced that we are doing

:07:10. > :07:14.as much damage overall as... We have just come out of the Eurozone

:07:15. > :07:19.crisis, it could be significant. We will have fisticuffs outside!

:07:20. > :07:24.LAUGHTER. I'm supposed to be in charge but it doesn't feel like it!

:07:25. > :07:29.Thank you, Martin. The Daily Mail, what a judge has been talking

:07:30. > :07:34.about, in his summing up, he jailed a woman who had killed a graduate

:07:35. > :07:38.using two mobile phones `` she was using two mobile phones and said the

:07:39. > :07:42.use of mobile phones in cars is a plague on society. We heard last

:07:43. > :07:45.week police will have the power to confiscate phones they think have

:07:46. > :07:49.been part of the problem in a car crash. Yes, everyone can see when

:07:50. > :07:53.they drive around or walk around, people using their phones, looking

:07:54. > :07:57.at them and so on, this is a particularly horrendous case with

:07:58. > :08:02.this woman appears to have been using two mobile phones in a 70 mph

:08:03. > :08:06.crash. There seems to be pressure for further action. The commission

:08:07. > :08:10.of the Metropolitan police has suggested six penalty points, the

:08:11. > :08:13.Transport Secretary suggested he might be willing to take that up, so

:08:14. > :08:17.they could be pressure for tougher action. You see at all the time. You

:08:18. > :08:22.do, and what I find quite encouraging is that she has been

:08:23. > :08:25.jailed for six years, because for me this is pretty much manslaughter.

:08:26. > :08:37.You know it is a dangerous thing to do. She was text thing on one and

:08:38. > :08:40.phoning on the other at 70 miles an hour. That truly is astounding

:08:41. > :08:42.behaviour. `` text in. Let's move on to the Telegraph, millions more

:08:43. > :08:45.being forced to pay higher rates of stamp duty in the last decade, a

:08:46. > :08:48.booming property prices pushing more people into the higher rate of stamp

:08:49. > :08:52.duty, and the stamp duty threshold have not moved up property prices

:08:53. > :08:56.have, have they? Guess what, in Ostia times when the government is

:08:57. > :09:02.highly indebted, they will find all kinds of ways to relieve Britons of

:09:03. > :09:05.their cash `` austere times. Clearly politicians like hidden ways to

:09:06. > :09:09.relieve people of their cash, and this is exactly what you would

:09:10. > :09:14.expect, therefore, so they haven't increased stamp duty, and as you

:09:15. > :09:19.said, the amount therefore means that it has gone up massively as

:09:20. > :09:24.property prices have recovered. And there is some speculation that the

:09:25. > :09:31.Tories may give a sop to us and increase it, but I wouldn't hold

:09:32. > :09:35.your breath. I wonder there will be tempted to move it because it is a

:09:36. > :09:38.big earner. They might try to do a little bit but it is hard to keep

:09:39. > :09:42.pace with the rapid rise in house prices for one thing and secondly,

:09:43. > :09:46.`` secondly, the difficulty is they are raising a lot of money out of

:09:47. > :09:49.it, financial constraints continue into the next election whoever wins,

:09:50. > :09:53.and where will that money come from if they do change? Louise, Martin,

:09:54. > :09:58.thank you very much, shorter than normal because of this breaking

:09:59. > :10:05.news, but we will return for another look at the papers at 11:25pm. I

:10:06. > :10:07.must tell you the joint statement from John Kerry and Ban Ki`Moon

:10:08. > :10:14.regarding the developments in the Middle East. We urge all parties to

:10:15. > :10:18.act with restraint and abide by the commitments during the cease`fire.

:10:19. > :10:22.It is critical to give civilians a reprieve from violence. During this

:10:23. > :10:25.period civilians in Gaza will receive humanitarian relief and the

:10:26. > :10:28.opportunity to carry out vital functions including burying the

:10:29. > :10:33.dead, taking care of injured and restocking food. Overdue repairs on

:10:34. > :10:36.infrastructure can also continue. He talks about the delegations

:10:37. > :10:40.immediately going to Cairo for negotiations with the Egyptian

:10:41. > :10:45.government at the invitation of Cairo, aimed at reaching a durable

:10:46. > :10:48.cease`fire. They will be able to raise all issues of concerns in

:10:49. > :10:52.these negotiations. That is part of the statement from Ban Ki`Moon and

:10:53. > :11:08.John Kerry. Now it is time for Sportsday.

:11:09. > :11:12.Hello and welcome to Sportsday. The headlines tonight: Scotland's

:11:13. > :11:15.poster girl for these Commonwealth Games

:11:16. > :11:21.provides a silver lining on a grey sky night at Hampden Park.

:11:22. > :11:23.Three Commonwealth golds at just 16. Claudia Fragapane becomes England?s

:11:24. > :11:24.latest triple gold
