:00:17. > :00:36.That was quick and! `` that was quick! Thank you for joining us. I'm

:00:37. > :00:43.just so pleased when it works. Time for a look at the front pages.

:00:44. > :00:48.Disagreement between airlines over whether Iraq's airspace is safe to

:00:49. > :00:53.fly through. A campaign against private parking companies that

:00:54. > :00:56.threaten drivers with huge fines. Millions of motorists could face

:00:57. > :01:02.higher diesel costs as the EU puts pressure on Britain to cut air

:01:03. > :01:06.pollution levels. The latest from Gaza on the front page of the Times,

:01:07. > :01:14.including the news that an Israeli soldier appears to have been

:01:15. > :01:18.captured by militants. The picture is of Claudia Fragapane. The World

:01:19. > :01:25.Health Organization is concerned about containing the Ebola virus.

:01:26. > :01:34.And the picture is of Usain Bolt at the Commonwealth Games. He is easily

:01:35. > :01:37.through and beautiful to watch. The Guardian is keeping Gaza on its

:01:38. > :01:49.front page. Not all of them are by any means. War returns to Gaza as

:01:50. > :01:55.truce breaks down. Nick Clegg is calling on Benjamin Netanyahu to

:01:56. > :02:00.talk directly to Hamas. I hate to say this but I'm not sure that his

:02:01. > :02:05.intervention is going to make a great deal of difference, given that

:02:06. > :02:08.the entire full force of the American federal government is not

:02:09. > :02:14.managing to get the Israelis and the Palestinians around the table. It is

:02:15. > :02:17.a very sensible intervention by Nick Clegg to say that there must be

:02:18. > :02:23.negotiations at some point but where is the incentive for Benjamin

:02:24. > :02:28.Netanyahu to do that? He has the military power, he has the force, he

:02:29. > :02:34.has the Iron Dome protecting his citizens, and he now has a clear set

:02:35. > :02:39.of military objectives which is to destroy these tunnels which he says

:02:40. > :02:45.Hamas has made and which will be used and are being used for

:02:46. > :02:48.terrorism. Until he has done that, I do not see, given that there is no

:02:49. > :02:54.stick being wielded by the international community, why he will

:02:55. > :03:01.come to the negotiating table. We understand that a soldier has been

:03:02. > :03:06.kidnapped by Hamas. Israel will not rest until they have got him back.

:03:07. > :03:11.We have looked at various versions of this story full of the Guardian

:03:12. > :03:17.has sources suggesting that they have both claimed they have taken

:03:18. > :03:21.one Israeli soldier and one source says they have not. There are also

:03:22. > :03:24.claims a strategy is being deployed by Israel where they will pound the

:03:25. > :03:30.area around where the man is being seized, even if that is likely to

:03:31. > :03:33.cause injury to him. It seems that something has certainly happened

:03:34. > :03:43.there. It is true that in November, 2011, there was an Israeli soldier

:03:44. > :03:46.released by the Palestinians who had been held for five years and in

:03:47. > :03:51.return for which 1000 prisoners were released. In terms of getting

:03:52. > :03:57.something out of this situation, in which Hamas have practically no

:03:58. > :04:03.credibility whatsoever and no allies, and the allies they used to

:04:04. > :04:06.have in Egypt are now in jail, and there is no broker on their side...

:04:07. > :04:12.Although, I understand Turkey is trying to intervene to get the two

:04:13. > :04:23.sides together in Egypt and to those who stalks. `` to those peace

:04:24. > :04:36.talks. You bowl out of control. Four countries have seen `` Ebola out of

:04:37. > :04:39.control. The World Health Organization says that with the

:04:40. > :04:44.right resources and the right measures, it can be contained. We

:04:45. > :04:51.have the headline that it is out of control but then when you read the

:04:52. > :04:57.article carefully, to, three athletes from Sierra Leone have

:04:58. > :05:02.tested negative for Ebola. You begin to wonder if it is similar to the

:05:03. > :05:06.kind of scares we have had before. In the other article, it is athletes

:05:07. > :05:11.from Sierra Leone currently in Glasgow that are begging not to be

:05:12. > :05:14.sent back to their country, because that is where we have had the

:05:15. > :05:19.outbreaks. People are suspicious and do not want to dump forward and go

:05:20. > :05:27.to hospital, which is where they have to be. `` do not want to come

:05:28. > :05:32.forward. Let's be clear, there has not been a single case in the UK or

:05:33. > :05:38.outside of west Africa, as far as I know. What they are picking up on is

:05:39. > :05:42.the fact that the visa seems to be spreading quickly in those West

:05:43. > :05:49.African countries. `` the disease seems to be spreading quickly. In

:05:50. > :05:54.this country, we do go to the doctor when we feel sick. And we have good

:05:55. > :06:00.public advice. When we get to the doctor or into hospital, we have a

:06:01. > :06:02.relatively well equipped and resourced system. There are good

:06:03. > :06:15.reasons why we should not necessarily panic yet.

:06:16. > :06:23.Some airlines are still continuing to fly over Iraq, even though it is

:06:24. > :06:31.a war`torn part of the world. It has still been allowed, or airlines have

:06:32. > :06:36.chosen to fly over eastern Ukraine. Even though there is a lot of

:06:37. > :06:40.conflict there. I am not sure of that we knew the rebels have those

:06:41. > :06:45.kinds of weapons capable of reaching planes at 30,000 feet. Now we are

:06:46. > :06:50.looking in the north of Iraq and thinking, do the fighters there, the

:06:51. > :06:57.insurgents, have these kind of weapons in the same way that the

:06:58. > :07:01.rebels in eastern Ukraine had them? To my mind, I do not understand what

:07:02. > :07:08.is in it for an airline. This is involuntary choice. `` a

:07:09. > :07:13.involuntary. If I was an airline boss, I do not see why I would fly

:07:14. > :07:19.my planes over any point of even potential risk. It is not like they

:07:20. > :07:27.have to be changed all over the world. This is one spot on the

:07:28. > :07:30.globe. Maybe more people will now choose the airlines they fly with

:07:31. > :07:37.depending on the route. Fair enough. That is a point people

:07:38. > :07:41.should be able to choose about. Here is the confusing thing. From reading

:07:42. > :07:46.this article, Rajesh Airways, for example, consider it safe to be

:07:47. > :07:51.flying over Iraq. But they have not been flying over the Ukraine since

:07:52. > :07:58.March. I did not know that. `` British airways. I am still puzzled

:07:59. > :08:01.about how they can have better intelligence than practically any of

:08:02. > :08:09.our defence sources in the government.

:08:10. > :08:13.A lot of police officers on duty because of the Commonwealth Games

:08:14. > :08:17.taking place in Glasgow. They have got leave to take, holiday to use

:08:18. > :08:25.up. They are probably working overtime. Is this really a concern

:08:26. > :08:31.for people in Scotland? After London hosted the Olympic Games we did not

:08:32. > :08:34.see a massive surge in crime. I do not think people are actively

:08:35. > :08:40.worried that the place is suddenly going to be hit by a rash of

:08:41. > :08:44.unsolvable crime. But I have spoken to police officers who have pointed

:08:45. > :08:48.out that a lot of what is normally delegated or contracted to private

:08:49. > :08:52.security firms is being done by the police in the Glasgow Commonwealth

:08:53. > :09:02.Games. Partly because they can see there are cuts ahead and they are

:09:03. > :09:08.trying to bolster income. I think there probably is a state at the

:09:09. > :09:13.moment where there are not so many police around the rest of Scotland.

:09:14. > :09:19.They will probably be problems ahead. A Labour MP, a former chief

:09:20. > :09:30.constable, says the backlog will be enormous. Is this a green light to

:09:31. > :09:36.criminals? As far as I know, we did not see a rash of burglaries or

:09:37. > :09:43.worse after London 2012. What we did see in 2011 were the riots in

:09:44. > :09:49.London. It seemed after the games that London was a more united, a

:09:50. > :09:54.proud city with its head held high. That is a broad, impressionistic,

:09:55. > :10:00.almost jingoistic thing to say. I do not know whether there was any

:10:01. > :10:03.effect on crime whatsoever. But the effect on Glasgow after the

:10:04. > :10:13.Commonwealth Games will be more along the positive lines. The city

:10:14. > :10:19.feeling great about itself. The Daily Telegraph. Larger UK this

:10:20. > :10:26.Scotland better off than peers in smaller countries. Scots have more

:10:27. > :10:34.disposable income because there are part of the UK. This will not make

:10:35. > :10:42.happy reading for the Nationalists who are in favour of independence.

:10:43. > :10:45.But people might prefer freedom and independence to having money in

:10:46. > :10:53.their pocket? Freedom comes at a price. The rationale is that at the

:10:54. > :10:56.moment the Scots apparently enjoy a greater level of disposable income

:10:57. > :11:05.than their contemporaries in Denmark or Finland. The rationale here is

:11:06. > :11:10.the supermarkets, for example, sell products at the same price all over

:11:11. > :11:18.the UK, even though transportation costs to the north of Scotland are

:11:19. > :11:25.higher. The argument goes, after independence that might change.

:11:26. > :11:31.There could be variation in prices. There was a point earlier on how the

:11:32. > :11:35.Nordic countries have things like better childcare and more cohesive

:11:36. > :11:38.societies. Those other things Scotland could aim for. But that is

:11:39. > :11:43.not the platform on which Alex Salmond is fighting the election. He

:11:44. > :11:51.says, we will be better off. We will keep our oil. There will be more

:11:52. > :11:58.pounds in your pocket. Once we escape the cover the English. This

:11:59. > :12:07.story is a saying that is not true. Will it be the main thing that

:12:08. > :12:13.people want their pocket? That might well be the way people think, since

:12:14. > :12:18.money seems to be the only standard of value in Britain these days. If

:12:19. > :12:22.we look at the countries that we have just mentioned, we are

:12:23. > :12:29.currently 16`20 of the child well`being index. Denmark and

:12:30. > :12:32.Finland are probably one and two. Money cannot buy you love, it

:12:33. > :12:40.probably cannot buy you the things you did in life, which are social

:12:41. > :12:44.goods provided by governments that are responsible. We are not living

:12:45. > :12:48.in a government that has those priorities. We could have some more

:12:49. > :12:57.quids in our pockets, but I do not think it will make people feel any

:12:58. > :13:05.better. What money will get you though, is a tad too. Many tattoos,

:13:06. > :13:07.depending on your preference. The Times is looking at how the Jews are

:13:08. > :13:29.the new social climate. `` tattoos. Are you a fan of it? No. I cannot

:13:30. > :13:38.get it. I remember getting the transfers when I was young. I have

:13:39. > :13:42.never liked the idea. The more they seem to proliferate, the less I can

:13:43. > :13:46.see any point of doing it. In the old days it was a bit of a

:13:47. > :13:58.statement. Now it seems to be part of the uniform. Everybody seems to

:13:59. > :14:01.have one. Do you? I do not. I have always rather wanted a Diet Coke

:14:02. > :14:12.logo on my shoulder. I love Diet Coke. They might pay you to have

:14:13. > :14:18.that. Yes indeed. But now I learn that 27% of my middle`class compete

:14:19. > :14:27.to its habitat use, compared to only 26% of people who are working class.

:14:28. > :14:35.`` have tattoos. Maybe it is time for us to alter out and get into.

:14:36. > :14:42.The thing like this, you think about the 70s and platform shoes and

:14:43. > :14:46.flares, you can get rid of those. I know somebody who had a lot of

:14:47. > :14:51.tattoos in his late 20s, early 30s. He is spending a fortune on getting

:14:52. > :14:58.rid of them. That seems like an expensive way to spend your free

:14:59. > :15:03.time. So could it be classy? Helen Mirren get away with it. I think the

:15:04. > :15:09.pendulum is about to swing. 90% of the upper class could also get them.

:15:10. > :15:17.We will end up with the pendulum swinging right back. Much easier to

:15:18. > :15:24.stick with the flares and the platform shoes. Thank you. Thank you

:15:25. > :15:26.very much. That is it for the papers. Now it is time for

:15:27. > :15:28.Commonwealth Games Sportsday.
