:00:00. > :00:00.have the result of the sporting action as Saint Helen 's take on

:00:00. > :00:23.Castleford. It is in 15 minutes. Hello and welcome to our look ahead

:00:24. > :00:30.to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. Let's look at the front

:00:31. > :00:37.pages. We will start with the Scotsman. There is a close up of

:00:38. > :00:47.Alex Salmond. The headline that tells the story dominates.

:00:48. > :00:53.Cross`party devolution promises have already been shattered, according to

:00:54. > :00:58.the Independent. The Daily Mail and sister about English votes for

:00:59. > :01:02.English laws. And the Daily Express has the announcement about Alex

:01:03. > :01:07.Salmond resigning. The Daily Record has a picture of the first Minister

:01:08. > :01:12.and his wife, and headline the dream shall never die, which was a quote

:01:13. > :01:16.from one of his press conferences. The Telegraph is also going with a

:01:17. > :01:22.picture of the first Minister. It says several pro` union newspapers

:01:23. > :01:27.were excluded from that particular news conference. We will talk about

:01:28. > :01:31.that. The Guardian says the political battle has shifted to

:01:32. > :01:34.England. The Times says political deadlock could mean that the new

:01:35. > :01:44.powers promised for Scotland are blocked. We began with the

:01:45. > :01:51.Scotsman. We will discuss that with Kevin McKenna from the Observer and

:01:52. > :01:55.James Miller from the Sunday Post. I like that we're starting with the

:01:56. > :02:02.Scotsman. It is bold and simple and does what it says on the tin. There

:02:03. > :02:12.is a close`up of Alex Salmond, the man who has dominated this. It is a

:02:13. > :02:15.good front page. It is a big picture and he has been a week character in

:02:16. > :02:21.Scottish politics. He has dominated Scottish politics for a long time.

:02:22. > :02:24.He is being leader fought ten years in his second stint. 20 years and

:02:25. > :02:32.all. It has the feel of the historic edition. It is a nice front page.

:02:33. > :02:42.You are not doing as well in terms of what a big figure he is. The

:02:43. > :02:47.Scotsman does things very well. I am looking forward to seeing it. The

:02:48. > :02:55.way they have used that picture and the choice of picture signifies a

:02:56. > :02:59.tribute and some respect. The Scotsman is in the vanguard of the

:03:00. > :03:06.unionist papers. That is fitting and it is appropriate and elegant. Would

:03:07. > :03:13.you expect to see his political obituary in the papers? What do you

:03:14. > :03:16.think it will be, in the sense that he couldn't get through

:03:17. > :03:25.independence, but they have come a long way? Independence has been a

:03:26. > :03:28.bridge too far. He has been the most commanding and able politician of

:03:29. > :03:34.his generation in Scotland and possibly in the entire UK. For him

:03:35. > :03:44.to have delivered, not only the first government for the SNP in the

:03:45. > :03:47.2007 poll by an overwhelming majority, which wasn't meant to

:03:48. > :03:53.happen, and then within a few years, coming within a whisker of bringing

:03:54. > :04:00.an end to the union, he has a lot to be proud of and he has left the SNP

:04:01. > :04:13.a bass of Legacy. `` a massive legacy. What I found coming up to

:04:14. > :04:18.the referendum in Scotland was people saying they were not going to

:04:19. > :04:27.vote yes because they didn't like Alex Salmond. He is a pre`eminent

:04:28. > :04:31.politician, but a lot of people didn't like Andy turned people off

:04:32. > :04:41.especially women. Let's move to the Guardian. There is going to be a lot

:04:42. > :04:51.of column inches about the battle moving to England. Column by Carol

:04:52. > :04:53.Ann Duffy. I don't know if it has been specially written, but I

:04:54. > :04:58.haven't seen enough of the script to work it out. The political battle

:04:59. > :05:01.moves to England, in terms of getting the powers that be three

:05:02. > :05:11.Westminster leaders promised last week. `` the three. It shows how

:05:12. > :05:17.Scotland and England are different. In Scotland, the story will be about

:05:18. > :05:22.who replaces Alex Salmond. That is why we were we are. Scottish

:05:23. > :05:28.politics and English politics have pulled apart. There will be a big

:05:29. > :05:31.battle in England over the powers and how devolution would work. It

:05:32. > :05:43.will dominate the rest of this parliament and possibly beyond. The

:05:44. > :05:47.Guardian says that there are differences over how the laws will

:05:48. > :05:53.look in fact David Cameron may have set a political trap. It is an

:05:54. > :05:57.imaginative and cultural front page. I assume that is a specially

:05:58. > :06:15.commissioned piece of art work, also on the right`hand side, there is a

:06:16. > :06:19.piece by Irving Welsh. He is keen on nationalism, although he doesn't

:06:20. > :06:27.mention Alex Salmond and the legacy he has left his party. He says this

:06:28. > :06:34.would go away, but 45% of the country, 1.6 million voters is

:06:35. > :06:47.something that Alex Salmond and the SNP will be proud of. He also

:06:48. > :06:51.lambasts the Better Together campaign. It looks like an

:06:52. > :06:57.imaginative front page for the Guardian. Alex Salmond said this

:06:58. > :07:01.morning and Acho of that, that the dream won't fade. That was in the

:07:02. > :07:07.later press conference when he talked about the resignation. He

:07:08. > :07:10.said the desire for independence has gone away for now. I think that

:07:11. > :07:21.Irving Welsh seems to be reflecting that. There was also the changing it

:07:22. > :07:26.free generation, perhaps they said for now, he was then back as a

:07:27. > :07:33.signal that he would be stepping down, and although he would take the

:07:34. > :07:37.agenda of independence away, but might not be the thought for the

:07:38. > :07:53.next leader. Do the Daily Mail and who `` home rule for England. This

:07:54. > :07:56.debate has a long way to go. It is the West Lothian question. No one

:07:57. > :08:06.has on it because there is not an easy answer. `` has answered it.

:08:07. > :08:10.Their names coming up and talking about it and challenging the Prime

:08:11. > :08:18.Minister like Owen Paterson and Liam Fox. These are not the usual

:08:19. > :08:25.suspects, the backbench head bangers. These people could pose a

:08:26. > :08:36.threat to David Cameron if he does not get this right. We in for a

:08:37. > :08:43.fractious time? A year after the Westminster election, their overall

:08:44. > :08:47.majority was something that was previously thought impossible and if

:08:48. > :08:52.this isn't sorted out, the West Lothian question, the extent of the

:08:53. > :08:57.devolved powers, which was their plea in the last week of the

:08:58. > :09:05.campaign that moved thousand voters, and people in the SNP will think

:09:06. > :09:11.they have a mandate built on the 1.6 million and 45% of the voters and

:09:12. > :09:18.they can see this as a mandate to bring the referendum back within a

:09:19. > :09:23.few years. It may not be over yet. That is something to look forward

:09:24. > :09:29.to. The Daily Telegraph has a striking photograph of Alex Salmond.

:09:30. > :09:32.This is the Scottish tradition. The English edition has a formal

:09:33. > :09:41.portrait of the Queen and talking about her statement that was

:09:42. > :09:43.released this afternoon. The Telegraph is interesting because

:09:44. > :09:48.some people were not allowed the conference. There was a sub text to

:09:49. > :09:52.the story because when the first minister made his resignation

:09:53. > :10:00.speech, certain members of the press were barred from being there, many

:10:01. > :10:06.being the most rabid of the Pru union papers, including the Daily

:10:07. > :10:14.Telegraph, even though I say that myself. `` pro union. That is

:10:15. > :10:24.reflected in the splash on the Telegraph. It said that Salmond has

:10:25. > :10:33.left the party in disarray and he was forced out. That is cobblers.

:10:34. > :10:37.The party is not in disarray and there is a clear successor, Nicola

:10:38. > :10:42.Sturgeon, the deputy. She might not follow his agenda, but I'm sure she

:10:43. > :10:53.will follow his disciplined style. They are not in disarray or turmoil

:10:54. > :11:00.at all. There she a shoo`in? `` is she. He was diplomatic when the

:11:01. > :11:05.question was raised. I don't know who else could stand. There might be

:11:06. > :11:11.another contender. Angus Robertson was the name that was mentioned in a

:11:12. > :11:14.few cycles. That makes sense because Angus Robertson is a very able

:11:15. > :11:21.politician that is held in high regard. They would have to give a

:11:22. > :11:29.pattern of competition, rather than have Nicola appointed. Rather than

:11:30. > :11:36.being anointed. When we look at the Times, this has both elements.

:11:37. > :11:41.Salmond quits as powerful Scotland are blocked. We are looking at one

:11:42. > :11:46.version here that has a close`up photograph of Alex Salmond at his

:11:47. > :11:50.resignation news conference. The other image we are looking at is the

:11:51. > :11:59.trouble at George Square in central Glasgow. Maybe one is a later

:12:00. > :12:02.version. It is interesting what they are trying to say if that is the

:12:03. > :12:07.focus with the photograph on George Square. As we understand it, there

:12:08. > :12:16.were only a few hundred people. What I heard from George Square was that

:12:17. > :12:22.there were a few people and didn't seem to be that bad, I hope. There

:12:23. > :12:29.was an expectation that there might be trouble. It seems that something

:12:30. > :12:33.might have kicked off tonight. I was going to go there, though if there

:12:34. > :12:38.is anything happening in George Square, I will report back. Stay on

:12:39. > :12:44.the line. The Daily Express has the story about reuniting Britain, leads

:12:45. > :12:49.the queen. Lot of the newspapers picked up on story with Buckingham

:12:50. > :12:56.Palace. Bleeding, well, it depends on your reading of the statement. ``

:12:57. > :13:04.pleading. It is unusual for the Queen to get involved and a cheesy

:13:05. > :13:10.the magnitude of what has happened. `` and it shows the magnitude.

:13:11. > :13:17.Haven't watched this from the beginning and following the twists

:13:18. > :13:22.and turns, do you think we would have this response and the tone here

:13:23. > :13:28.tonight, the divide in the polls of 55 to 45, when people thought it

:13:29. > :13:39.would have been closer. With that your expectation at the start? That

:13:40. > :13:46.the polls would be...? That the result would be reasonably

:13:47. > :13:52.emphatic. At the start, the yes vote was running at around 30%. Although

:13:53. > :13:56.it has been more comfortable than predicted by the polls, the yes

:13:57. > :14:04.campaign added 15 points within three years. Significantly, there

:14:05. > :14:09.are not a lot of Scottish Nationalists of themselves that

:14:10. > :14:20.could deliver independence, so to get to 45 cents, tens of thousands

:14:21. > :14:28.of Labour supporters deserted their party. It was also in the areas with

:14:29. > :14:39.the worst areas of social deprivation. Labour have got

:14:40. > :14:45.problems off the back of this. Any of them pointed out that they won

:14:46. > :14:49.the referendum, it is not the whole thing. They should not be

:14:50. > :14:57.celebrating given the results. The questions begin. James Miller, Kevin

:14:58. > :15:05.McKenna, thank you very much. You have a lot of work yet to do and a

:15:06. > :15:09.healthy amount of reading to come. From the Sunday Post and the

:15:10. > :15:24.Observer, thank you. That is about it from here in Edinburgh. I stole

:15:25. > :15:26.Martine's job here tonight, but I do have Edinburgh Castle behind me.

:15:27. > :15:41.Thank you. Hello and welcome to Sportsday.

:15:42. > :15:43.The headlines: Wembley winds the right to host Euro 2020's final and

:15:44. > :15:45.semifinals. Glasgow is given four games but

:15:46. > :15:46.Cardiff misses
