:00:16. > :00:18.Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers
:00:19. > :00:26.With me are Randeep Ramesh, who's the Social Affairs Editor
:00:27. > :00:28.at The Guardian and the Political Correspondent
:00:29. > :00:41.The Sunday Times, which carries pictures of some of the 25 children
:00:42. > :00:43.who died in the plane crash in Egypt's Sinai.
:00:44. > :00:46.But it leads with the suggestion that ministers have U-turned
:00:47. > :00:49.on tougher school tests in the face of teaching union opposition.
:00:50. > :00:51.The Observer leads with the government's internet
:00:52. > :00:54.surveillance plans - it says the Home Secretary has been forced
:00:55. > :01:01.The Mail's focus is the Iraq War - it claims that ministers
:01:02. > :01:03.at the time were told to 'burn' a top-level document questioning
:01:04. > :01:09.The Sunday Telegraph carries a picture of Prince Harry
:01:10. > :01:12.handing the Rugby World Cup to New Zealand's captain -
:01:13. > :01:16.after his side's historic victory over Australia.
:01:17. > :01:20.And public spending cuts is the top story for the Sunday Post
:01:21. > :01:23.- it says that teachers have been forced to hand out bookies' pens
:01:24. > :01:37.Let's begin with a story we have been leading on all day, and that is
:01:38. > :01:44.the Russian airliner which came down in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, this is
:01:45. > :01:50.the Sunday Times headline, did Isis down the plane? There are a number
:01:51. > :01:57.of pictures of the children who are thought to have died. Over 100
:01:58. > :02:01.bodies have been found. This question of whether there was any
:02:02. > :02:06.terrorist or militant activity, the authorities seem to have batted that
:02:07. > :02:09.away. It is the right question to ask is the first thing everyone
:02:10. > :02:17.thinks, given the background, with Russia in Syria, bombing Isis
:02:18. > :02:21.positions, but I always was under the oppression that the Americans
:02:22. > :02:27.did not think they were doing enough to fight Isis -- I was always under
:02:28. > :02:33.the impression. We don't know. The Sinai Peninsula has been the subject
:02:34. > :02:37.of some action, but we will have to wait and see, the black box and the
:02:38. > :02:40.debris which has been collected, that will have to be gone through,
:02:41. > :02:44.and this is one of the awful reminders of the trouble that we
:02:45. > :02:48.face in that part of the world. Other airlines have said they will
:02:49. > :02:53.not fly over that Essbase, and there is some worry at the very least that
:02:54. > :02:58.this has been a terrorist incident -- will not fly over that air space.
:02:59. > :03:01.The fact that this is a Russian airliner, and the involvement of air
:03:02. > :03:10.strikes we have seen against Isis targets by Russian aircraft, that
:03:11. > :03:14.leads us to the statement that Isis are making, saying they are
:03:15. > :03:19.responsible for this. It is an obvious question to ask, even though
:03:20. > :03:25.the evidence is slim, but they are reporting tonight that there was no
:03:26. > :03:28.SOS. Possibly that might suggest that what ever happened came as a
:03:29. > :03:34.surprise to the people flying the plane. The Sunday Times has put the
:03:35. > :03:36.pictures of the kids on the front, because we are increasingly led to
:03:37. > :03:43.believe that the Russians are the bad guys. I was brought up on that
:03:44. > :03:50.in the 70s and 80s, but here are little children, the little girl in
:03:51. > :03:54.the main picture, holding a my Little pony toy, the same as my
:03:55. > :03:58.daughter, and it reminds you that these people do not deserve to be
:03:59. > :04:02.blown out of the sky, if that is what has happened. They have just
:04:03. > :04:07.gone on holiday to a popular part of the world, and they were on their
:04:08. > :04:13.way home. It makes them look more like us, which we can forget, were
:04:14. > :04:19.not allowed to remember. That's right, the power of the narrative,
:04:20. > :04:23.we saw that with the child that was washed up on the beaches of Greece,
:04:24. > :04:30.that is a powerful moving picture, but I wonder if Isis's reach is such
:04:31. > :04:40.that it can down a large airliner and long way away, as well, with a
:04:41. > :04:44.missile, it seems far-fetched. The view seems to be from experts that
:04:45. > :04:49.they do not have that power and capability because the plane was too
:04:50. > :04:52.high. The thing with Isis, so much is not known, we can't get immediate
:04:53. > :05:00.there to find out what is going on and we don't know what military
:05:01. > :05:05.people are finding out in the area, and so we don't know what their
:05:06. > :05:11.capability is or isn't. The Daily Mail has really gone to town with
:05:12. > :05:18.this story. The Iraq war cover up. The article is about how ministers
:05:19. > :05:22.were told they must destroy a document which showed the war was
:05:23. > :05:29.illegal. This was a document which was written by the then Attorney
:05:30. > :05:37.General Lord Goldsmith. This is a complex one. Straightforward
:05:38. > :05:44.headline, though. The claim is by a senior number ten figure at the time
:05:45. > :05:49.which could be a politician or civil servant, anybody. The claim is that
:05:50. > :05:53.the Attorney General came forward with the legal advice, which we know
:05:54. > :05:57.about, there was legal advice and then there was new legal advice a
:05:58. > :06:05.couple of weeks later. It said the conflict to be challenged. And
:06:06. > :06:09.apparently someone said, burn it. It sounds slightly amateur for what was
:06:10. > :06:14.a very slick operation at number ten at the time. But not many people had
:06:15. > :06:18.sight of that document in the first place. No, and the people that did,
:06:19. > :06:24.maybe not the people that you expect, they gave it to Jeff home,
:06:25. > :06:29.the Defence Secretary, and his name comes up a lot in this, and they let
:06:30. > :06:35.him see it, but not Gordon Brown, even though Gordon Brown was very
:06:36. > :06:39.much number two in that government. It seems Tony Blair was prepared to
:06:40. > :06:46.sack Jeff Poon at the time, so why you would give him an initiative to
:06:47. > :06:50.use against him, if he did sack him a few weeks later, it is not quite
:06:51. > :06:57.ring... There is something missing. Something quite fishy, but no firm
:06:58. > :07:00.facts really. The first legal advice the Attorney General gave was that
:07:01. > :07:03.going to war in Iraq could be challenged because there is not a
:07:04. > :07:07.legal basis for it through the United Nations and he changed his
:07:08. > :07:13.mind about that a few days later. Yeah, the question for Chilcot,
:07:14. > :07:19.which is being investigated, what provided the change? Why did anyone
:07:20. > :07:23.decide that they did give one opinion and then ten days later give
:07:24. > :07:27.another? The Mail on Sunday has decided that is because there was
:07:28. > :07:36.pressure put on Goldsmith with the words "Burn it". The problem,
:07:37. > :07:41.though, it is a bit better than rumour and innuendo, but not much.
:07:42. > :07:47.They are in the difficult position, they can't name their source, and it
:07:48. > :07:51.appears... Is it just one source? We know the difficulties we face with
:07:52. > :07:55.that. Yeah, it seems to be, although they have spoken to Jeff home, and
:07:56. > :08:02.he has denied that he brought up this Burn it message. He has not
:08:03. > :08:09.many things in the article. His brilliant comment, is, I will not be
:08:10. > :08:20.making any comment, and then he proceeds to make a comment. His
:08:21. > :08:24.nickname was buff Hoon which I had not realised. You hope that this
:08:25. > :08:29.will be explained to us in the Chilcot report, which has been
:08:30. > :08:34.underway since 2009 and we are still not likely to see it until next
:08:35. > :08:38.summer. Yes, I do not know how anyone can do still be essential
:08:39. > :08:45.Chilcot in 2000 words, but I'm sure someone can. -- be essential. The
:08:46. > :08:55.Observer newspaper, Theresa May forced to backtrack over law and
:08:56. > :09:01.snooping over internet use. -- law on. These are plans to give the
:09:02. > :09:07.securities services access to all of our internet browsing history, which
:09:08. > :09:15.many people take issue with. Yes, this looks like a number ten spin
:09:16. > :09:19.operation, it looks like it, certainly to liberty, who say that
:09:20. > :09:23.it is just spin, the Lib Dem and Labour peers will probably knock
:09:24. > :09:29.this back. There has been a pattern emerging. They are emboldened after
:09:30. > :09:37.the tax credit cuts. They don't mind a bit of pink -- ping-pong. There
:09:38. > :09:41.are many stories about this, the main one is in the Sunday Times,
:09:42. > :09:46.they have gone on judges will be given the power to veto the approval
:09:47. > :09:49.sought by ministers, and at the moment they can say, collect all the
:09:50. > :09:56.information on this chap, he's dangerous, but they are saying, put
:09:57. > :10:02.a judging. Veto for surveillance usually means using a rubber stamp
:10:03. > :10:04.and what they want is for a judge to decide on this, and that is what
:10:05. > :10:11.they are not getting from the government. It will not go away its
:10:12. > :10:16.entirety? It looks like spin, it is one of those, we're going to look at
:10:17. > :10:23.everything you do at the internet, but we are not bothered about
:10:24. > :10:27.Facebook. It smacks of spin and this has been kicking around for a while,
:10:28. > :10:31.the Lib Dems claim credit for downing this in the last government.
:10:32. > :10:37.According to this is seems to have downed itself in this government.
:10:38. > :10:42.Which is why it smacks of spin, the way it has been watered down
:10:43. > :10:50.suddenly, but maybe not by that much. I'm always so shocked by how
:10:51. > :10:59.cynical our paper reviewers are! Another Sunday Post. The article,
:11:00. > :11:05.this is on the Scottish front page, exclusive, schoolkids lefty use
:11:06. > :11:13.bookmakers pens as cuts bite -- left to use. This is a great Sunday Post
:11:14. > :11:18.local authority funding, and how local authority funding, and how
:11:19. > :11:22.that is affecting education funding, but my own Sunday Post has gone in
:11:23. > :11:29.and the fact that the budgets have been cut so much that there is not
:11:30. > :11:42.much cash for pens, basic stuff for kids. Just does. Jotter? That is
:11:43. > :11:52.something you use for a shopping list. It is shocking, though, that
:11:53. > :11:57.the teachers have got to get these from the bookmakers. The teachers
:11:58. > :12:01.are running into the bookmakers? Scotland does have a gambling
:12:02. > :12:06.legacy. Be careful with those national stereotypes. The Sunday
:12:07. > :12:13.Post has done very well with this story. There is a serious story, the
:12:14. > :12:18.Scottish election is next year, and the SNP government has got to be
:12:19. > :12:24.judged on the things it has done, rather than just on the referendum,
:12:25. > :12:28.and this is the start. Other papers are not doing this much, but this is
:12:29. > :12:31.the Sunday Post, judging them on their record of cutting budgets to
:12:32. > :12:34.local authorities and local authorities cutting education
:12:35. > :12:38.budgets and that has to be highlighted. And now to the Sunday
:12:39. > :12:46.Telegraph, this is the headline of the night. Why your cat is plotting
:12:47. > :12:50.to kill you. Why is this? Apparently because they are cats, they are
:12:51. > :13:00.related to African lions and Scottish Wildcats. Your cat is
:13:01. > :13:06.genetically programmed to conspire. To be neurotic and aggressive, I
:13:07. > :13:13.will second that, we have a cat which does that. It is an insane
:13:14. > :13:18.story, cats cannot plot, they cannot think like that, but is also a great
:13:19. > :13:22.story because everyone knows a slightly grumpy cat which they think
:13:23. > :13:28.is plotting and they do look at you as if they are potting. It works on
:13:29. > :13:36.two levels. The problem is, the size argument, but you have friends with
:13:37. > :13:39.an enormous cat? Yes, Meme -- they might be watching, they have a cat
:13:40. > :13:44.the size of a dog, but they cannot let it out because people might
:13:45. > :13:52.steal it. Mine is, and if anyone would like to home her, they are
:13:53. > :13:56.welcome. She is the cruellest thing. We are going to look at the Mail on
:13:57. > :14:03.Sunday, and I can't work out how I'm supposed to approach this story.
:14:04. > :14:09.Jerry and Murdoch, what a rugby union, we have a picture from the
:14:10. > :14:18.Rugby World Cup final, Rupert Murdoch with his new squeeze, Jerry
:14:19. > :14:21.Hall. What springs to mind? What attracted you to the
:14:22. > :14:30.multi-billionaire Rupert Murdoch? In the words of Mrs Merton... Jerry
:14:31. > :14:33.Hall can't be hard up, she had a modelling career and what ever Mick
:14:34. > :14:38.Jagger has left her, but they are wearing very cheap scarves. These
:14:39. > :14:42.are the scars that you get outside the ground for ?5, I would have
:14:43. > :14:48.thought Rupert could have his own scarf made for him or and American
:14:49. > :14:57.scar. He could have supported New Zealand. Yes, is the man who always
:14:58. > :15:03.backs winner. Yes, but the underdog... Anyway, that is Rupert
:15:04. > :15:09.Murdoch, Jerry, very happy. That is it for the papers this hour. My
:15:10. > :15:12.guests will be back at 1134 another look at the stories making the
:15:13. > :15:23.headlines tomorrow. Later on, we will have the headlines
:15:24. > :15:36.at 11 o'clock. With more on the aeroplane crash in the Sinai
:15:37. > :15:40.Peninsula. And now we have Reporters.
