:00:29. > :00:31.Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers

:00:32. > :00:35.With me are Isabel Hardman, Assistant Editor at the Spectator

:00:36. > :00:37.and James Lyons, Deputy Political Editor at the Sunday Times.

:00:38. > :00:42.One story dominating, let's talk you through the front pages, as we have

:00:43. > :00:46.them. The Telegraph is reporting on the British tourists minutes away

:00:47. > :00:49.from take-off and who now find themselves stranded in Sharm

:00:50. > :00:54.el-Sheikh in Egypt after the British Government suspended all flights in

:00:55. > :00:58.and out of the resort. The Guardian says the Government was acting on

:00:59. > :01:02.specific intelligence relating to the crash, which it received in the

:01:03. > :01:09.last 24 hours. The Mirror has the stark headline, it's not safe to fly

:01:10. > :01:11.home. The Times reports and comments from American intelligence sources

:01:12. > :01:17.that Islamic State was responsible for blowing up the plane. The Metro

:01:18. > :01:20.says Government concerns stem from its own intelligence sources rather

:01:21. > :01:25.than anything coming out of the crash investigation in Egypt. And,

:01:26. > :01:29.the only paper not to feature the plane crash, leads instead on pleas

:01:30. > :01:34.from the National Grid for heavy users of

:01:35. > :01:42.Let's start off with the Guardian, consumption after an unexpected

:01:43. > :01:46.Let's start off with the Guardian, this is a huge story which broke in

:01:47. > :01:49.good time for all the papers. All papers able to get together some

:01:50. > :01:59.pretty comprehensive analysis. The question is why have the

:02:00. > :02:03.government decided to suspend flights now when the plane came down

:02:04. > :02:07.over the weekend? The answer is they have had intelligence not part of

:02:08. > :02:12.the flight investigation that led them to believe they had to, as a

:02:13. > :02:19.precautionary measure, to suspend the flights. This is uneven of the

:02:20. > :02:25.visit of President Sisi. The Egyptian president here for a

:02:26. > :02:29.visit, embarrassing timing? The Egyptians are already up in arms

:02:30. > :02:35.about the decision so it will be an uncomfortable meeting tomorrow. It

:02:36. > :02:40.will be a body blow for tourism in Egypt's, which is already reeling?

:02:41. > :02:44.20,000 people stuck out there now and the Foreign Office has changed

:02:45. > :02:49.its advice this evening, which has said Sharm el Sheikh, no longer

:02:50. > :02:53.consider it safe. As far as I can can see from reports around, the

:02:54. > :02:57.bars are open restaurants are open and there doesn't seem to be any

:02:58. > :03:07.heightened security. You have been there several times? I have been

:03:08. > :03:12.through Sharm several times. I wasn't too concerned. There is a

:03:13. > :03:19.history of these problems in the region. Sharm has been targeted, a

:03:20. > :03:26.resort of the coast, there were suicide attacks there in 2006 which

:03:27. > :03:30.killed 23 people. It will not come as a surprise there are risks in

:03:31. > :03:34.this area. I was reading this morning, Gove's wife had been

:03:35. > :03:39.planning a winter break and cancelled on the last-minute on a

:03:40. > :03:48.gut instinct, so there you go. Isabel, the Metro, bomb alert,

:03:49. > :03:52.grounds Sharm flights. What they were saying is, the statement from

:03:53. > :03:57.Downing Street we had, it may well have been brought down by an

:03:58. > :04:01.explosive device. What an unusual statement by Number Ten? Yes, given

:04:02. > :04:05.the Egyptians and the Russians at the weekend said they didn't think

:04:06. > :04:10.it was the results of a terrorist package. The plane itself

:04:11. > :04:13.disintegrated in the air, I suppose the airline company are relieved at

:04:14. > :04:19.least one country is starting to raise again, the possibility of

:04:20. > :04:27.terrorist activities. It is saying in the Metro, it is understood the

:04:28. > :04:29.concerns are from Britain's own intelligence sources but I

:04:30. > :04:36.understand it could be some satellite imagery the US got hold of

:04:37. > :04:40.which they may have shared with us, which showed a flash in the sky. The

:04:41. > :04:43.Egyptians saying this is an overreaction by the British

:04:44. > :04:47.government, but if you are a Prime Minister or a Foreign Secretary, it

:04:48. > :04:51.is hard to take any risk when you think perhaps the airport security

:04:52. > :04:57.there at Sharm el Sheikh is not up to scratch? This is why politicians

:04:58. > :05:01.have such a difficult job. If they hadn't suspended flights and

:05:02. > :05:05.something happens, you can imagine the reaction when the press here

:05:06. > :05:09.find out there had been intelligence that had been passed to the British,

:05:10. > :05:14.suggesting it might have been something to do with terrorism. You

:05:15. > :05:20.can totally understand why they have taken that decision. It is awkward

:05:21. > :05:30.in terms of relations with Egypt. You have seen the impact on other

:05:31. > :05:35.countries that have had terrorist action, Tunisia for example. It

:05:36. > :05:43.comes after they put a security team on the ground to check out the

:05:44. > :05:47.airport. This comes as news from the Home Secretary's wanting new

:05:48. > :05:51.surveillance powers for the intelligence agencies. In some ways

:05:52. > :05:59.she might think this backs up her case the security services do need

:06:00. > :06:04.modernised, up today intelligence gathering techniques, in order to

:06:05. > :06:07.combat terrorism? In Westminster this afternoon when news of this

:06:08. > :06:15.filtered out before flights were suspended, Downing Street were

:06:16. > :06:18.suggesting terrorism was involved, some of my more cynical colleagues

:06:19. > :06:22.thought it might have been a coincidence, but I think we can

:06:23. > :06:26.discount that. The Guardian are reporting tonight, although Labour

:06:27. > :06:29.have given a warm welcome to the package they think is a lot more

:06:30. > :06:34.moderate than what they were expecting, there is some judicial

:06:35. > :06:42.oversight, the extent of the information retained isn't as fast

:06:43. > :06:47.as was feared by many. Let's rattle through the others. The Financial

:06:48. > :06:53.Times, pretty close to power cuts, if you believe this. National Grid

:06:54. > :06:59.in an emergency plea that the heavy users, industry, to power-down? Yes,

:07:00. > :07:06.asking heavy industry to switch to rack up generators to ensure supply.

:07:07. > :07:09.If you go further down in this story, I assume this is because we

:07:10. > :07:13.didn't have enough power stations and needed to build more, but there

:07:14. > :07:17.is another angle to this. The problem with the energy supply has

:07:18. > :07:20.been caused in part because electricity prices are too low to

:07:21. > :07:24.get supplies incentive to use capacity at short notice. The

:07:25. > :07:31.Telegraph, James, they have speeding fines. The police will use speeding

:07:32. > :07:35.fines to raise money? This is a more honest approach many forces have

:07:36. > :07:39.used in the past. Beds police talking about zero tolerance

:07:40. > :07:45.approach. Anyone going over 75 Leader of the House 70 miles an hour

:07:46. > :07:52.will get a fine. It comes in the midst of a cash crisis. Even if you

:07:53. > :07:57.are doing 71, low margin for error. Talking about slippers, they are

:07:58. > :08:00.back? It is on the front page of the Telegraph, they are still in fashion

:08:01. > :08:07.despite underfloor heating and lovely carpets. I am sure James has

:08:08. > :08:14.a pipe and slippers waiting at home for him after this. Not quite. Do

:08:15. > :08:24.you wear slippers, ever, Isabel, do you wear slippers? I am a fan of

:08:25. > :08:29.big, sparkly bed socks. The perfect Christmas present, a pair of

:08:30. > :08:34.slippers? I am at this stage in my life where all I want is a bottle of

:08:35. > :08:39.scotch and some socks. Good to talk to, we will be back in an hour to

:08:40. > :08:43.review the papers. James and Isabel, many thanks. Coming up next, it is

:08:44. > :08:44.time for sports
