:00:00. > :00:00.extra troops are deployed to flood hit areas with thousands -- about

:00:00. > :00:09.more on stand-by. Islamic militants had been holding

:00:10. > :00:18.out in the key city of Ramadi which has been taken by Iraqi forces.

:00:19. > :00:24.Hello and welcome to our look ahead at what the papers will be bringing

:00:25. > :00:29.us tomorrow. With us are Michael Booker from the Daily Express and

:00:30. > :00:33.financial analyst Louise Cooper. Seasons greetings to you both.

:00:34. > :00:39.Louise and I look like baubles. Michael looks more sober but you

:00:40. > :00:50.should see his shoes! The Guardian says filed flood defences cast doubt

:00:51. > :00:54.on UK readiness for a new weather era and features pictures of elderly

:00:55. > :01:04.people being rescued. There is a similar picture in the i.

:01:05. > :01:14.David Cameron has put troops on alert. The mail includes an aerial

:01:15. > :01:20.picture of flood damage and asks why the UK is donating to overseas flood

:01:21. > :01:24.prevention schemes. The Daily Telegraph says Britain relies more

:01:25. > :01:28.heavily on foreign doctors than any other EU nation and it includes a

:01:29. > :01:31.picture of two young children helping out with the flood clean-up

:01:32. > :01:36.in Hebden Bridge. The Daily Express says there will be

:01:37. > :01:41.no letup in the bad weather. The Daily Mirror carries an aerial

:01:42. > :01:47.photo of the flood damage in York and also says 500 prisoners,

:01:48. > :01:50.including a murderer, have been released by mistake.

:01:51. > :01:58.The Financial Times says the floods have already cost ?1.5 billion, but

:01:59. > :02:05.it leads on a story about quantitive easing in the euro zone.

:02:06. > :02:10.That will sap any festive spirit! We will leave Mario Draghi to his QE.

:02:11. > :02:17.We will start with the i and a picture of one of the boat is being

:02:18. > :02:24.used to rescue people in I assume it is York. There are thousands without

:02:25. > :02:27.power. Many evacuated. I feel like we have seen flooding a lot in this

:02:28. > :02:31.country in the last few years that these pictures seem to be beyond

:02:32. > :02:36.anything we have seen. Extraordinary. There is not a lot of

:02:37. > :02:40.news around but even so, every single paper has pretty much lead on

:02:41. > :02:46.this story. They have all chosen different photographs but they are

:02:47. > :02:52.really quite extraordinary. The Mirror has picture of York and

:02:53. > :02:57.ruined homes. The i has this emotional picture with old people

:02:58. > :03:02.being rescued by the army. The FT has chosen the same picture as the

:03:03. > :03:08.Mirror. There are two young children in the mud after the floods. Quite

:03:09. > :03:13.extraordinary images we are seeing. Awful to be flooded at any time. I

:03:14. > :03:16.have never lived in a part of the country which has suffered in this

:03:17. > :03:22.way but for it to happen at Christmas. To see these people, they

:03:23. > :03:28.are being told the levels are still rising. There will be more storms

:03:29. > :03:32.later on in the week, more rainfall on Tuesday or Wednesday. They have

:03:33. > :03:37.no letup in all of this. Their houses are ruined. They hear the

:03:38. > :03:43.government saying, we will look at reviewing flood defences and the

:03:44. > :03:48.money for it. We had the Cobra committee meeting this morning. It

:03:49. > :03:51.is all to show that the government care but at the end of the day,

:03:52. > :03:59.there is not a lot practically that they can do. There are troops on

:04:00. > :04:03.alert but what can they do? They cannot go in and clean your house

:04:04. > :04:08.up. They cannot go and replace all the things which have been ruined in

:04:09. > :04:12.your house. Troops cannot sort the insurance and this is what all these

:04:13. > :04:16.people have to look forward to it in the New Year. Especially people with

:04:17. > :04:21.businesses. You rely on a business to bring you an income. If you do

:04:22. > :04:25.not have a business, you do not have an income. For businesses, it is

:04:26. > :04:30.doubly worse. Not only have you lost a home that you have lost your

:04:31. > :04:36.source of income to provide for your family. What we saw in Cumbria and

:04:37. > :04:39.Lancashire before Christmas when they were flooded, it is the

:04:40. > :04:43.incredible support we have seen for people turning out for a Java. As

:04:44. > :04:48.soon as the water has gone down, I have been amazed how quickly people

:04:49. > :04:54.do turn things around. I remember as a child, our house was flooded. In

:04:55. > :05:05.the 70s our house was flooded. I was a child so I thought it was a big

:05:06. > :05:07.adventure. Clearly it was not for my parents. It brought neighbours

:05:08. > :05:10.together because everybody was in the same boat. Or were they? It is

:05:11. > :05:15.all well and good and people showing their spirit, but we do not want

:05:16. > :05:19.this every two weeks like it is in Cumbria and without any reaction

:05:20. > :05:25.from the government to show they are doing something. But at the same

:05:26. > :05:32.time, what can they practically do? Indeed. Let's move on to the Daily

:05:33. > :05:39.Mirror. Floodgate fury. This shows how many of the buildings have been

:05:40. > :05:47.ruined by this water. Tell us about this story. They had to raise the

:05:48. > :05:55.Foss barrier because the pumps were going to be in danger and they would

:05:56. > :05:59.be overwhelmed and not able to pump the water. They allowed certain

:06:00. > :06:03.parts of the city to be flooded and others were not. It will not be

:06:04. > :06:08.popular with anybody in that flooded area. If they feel it is for a

:06:09. > :06:14.greater good, that is for them to argue, obviously. Depends where your

:06:15. > :06:17.property is. The Thames flood barrier, the whole point of it is to

:06:18. > :06:21.flood other bits of the country rather than central London, because

:06:22. > :06:26.the economic impact of flooding in London would be so severe. It is

:06:27. > :06:30.these cruel decisions that have to be made by somebody, where is

:06:31. > :06:38.somewhere has to be flooded, where should it be? That is a very tough

:06:39. > :06:42.decision to be made. We have seen pictures of York flooded before but

:06:43. > :06:48.it is rare to see Leeds flooded. I have lived in Leeds. I don't

:06:49. > :06:52.remember it ever happening. There seem to be huge areas in the centre

:06:53. > :06:56.of Leeds which will be affected. As we go forward, this seems to be

:06:57. > :07:05.something which is more prevalent everywhere. Headline on your paper,

:07:06. > :07:09.store chaos to last until the New Year -- storm chaos. That can only

:07:10. > :07:13.mean the water levels will go up and that will not be immediately as we

:07:14. > :07:16.have been seeing, the water levels peak overnight and it comes up and

:07:17. > :07:21.people will have this at least until the end of the week and then they

:07:22. > :07:27.are cleaning up again. The times are going with this Met Office forecast

:07:28. > :07:31.saying there are 70 mph gales, heavy rain set to fall on Cumbria where

:07:32. > :07:35.communities have been flooded three times in less than a month, so

:07:36. > :07:40.again, the Times as saying the same thing, clearly, the Met Office is

:07:41. > :07:46.issuing these warnings. We will move on and talk about something other

:07:47. > :07:49.than flooding. The FT, stores notch up ox and a bonanza. This is

:07:50. > :07:57.extraordinary when you think of how many sales we had in the run-up to

:07:58. > :08:03.Christmas. It has gone out of fashion, shopping in shops! Mr

:08:04. > :08:08.Booker took his wife to the shops and bought a kettle and a test! If

:08:09. > :08:15.you do it online, there is no fun. If you go out there and take your

:08:16. > :08:23.good lady with you. Your good lady! And is glad that you did not call

:08:24. > :08:29.her the Mrs. This is high Street shopping, not just any old online

:08:30. > :08:33.shopping. We know Black Friday, online was phenomenal that high

:08:34. > :08:39.streets were not great. Why would you want to go into a store and

:08:40. > :08:43.battle over a telly with somebody else or a toaster or even a kettle

:08:44. > :08:48.if you are a lucky lady! Clearly, this is the first year where Britons

:08:49. > :08:53.have had money to spend. We have had inflation zero but average earnings

:08:54. > :08:57.going up 2.5 to 3%. That is the first time in eight years this has

:08:58. > :09:03.happened. This should have been the year retailers had a good time.

:09:04. > :09:06.Unfortunately, two things happened. One was warm weather which

:09:07. > :09:10.particularly hit the clothing retailers. We have had a number of

:09:11. > :09:15.retailers saying this has not been a great autumn or winter for us. The

:09:16. > :09:26.other thing is massive discounting. I get at least 50 offers in my inbox

:09:27. > :09:29.every day, 30% off, 50% off, even before we got to Christmas day. On

:09:30. > :09:31.Christmas Eve I was getting the same. The retailers have got

:09:32. > :09:38.themselves into this discounting game and none of them have been able

:09:39. > :09:43.to get out of it. How many will be spending on credit cards? A lot.

:09:44. > :09:48.There seem to be a lot of foreign tourists. I think they said in

:09:49. > :09:52.London 50% were foreign tourists. I was at the Science Museum today,

:09:53. > :09:58.there were a lot of foreign tourists. All spending money, good

:09:59. > :10:03.for the economy. The quest heats up for chocolate which does not melt

:10:04. > :10:10.when the mercury rises. You prefer yours straight from the fridge. Or

:10:11. > :10:17.the freezer, I am a bit weird. I am worried about your teeth. You like

:10:18. > :10:29.it one? Not melting but I like it to be soft. This is a Zurich -based

:10:30. > :10:30.chocolate ears who have started looking at heat resistant chocolate

:10:31. > :10:45.-- chocolate ears. You would have quite a hot mouth.

:10:46. > :10:48.This is a game changer. The big chocolate markets Europe and America

:10:49. > :10:52.and they are trying to take chocolate to the emerging markets,

:10:53. > :11:00.places which tend to be a lot hotter which do not have refrigeration or

:11:01. > :11:04.air conditioning. Therefore, the chocolate melts in these hot

:11:05. > :11:07.countries. What they are trying to do is develop heat resistant

:11:08. > :11:11.chocolate in order to sell it to the rest of the world and make them fat

:11:12. > :11:16.and teeth decay as well. Her shoes, the American chocolate company have

:11:17. > :11:20.been doing this for years. They sold tropical chocolate bars to American

:11:21. > :11:30.soldiers in the Second World War. That is American chocolate. Does not

:11:31. > :11:37.the same as ours. If you have ever had a Hershey's kiss. I am not going

:11:38. > :11:43.to comment. Other chocolate is available. Are the stock markets

:11:44. > :11:48.opened tomorrow? The Daily Telegraph, moody Monday, the

:11:49. > :11:55.Christmas come down. It is all over. The gifts are opened, the turkey has

:11:56. > :12:01.gone. Not in my house! We have a lot of turkey left and goose as well.

:12:02. > :12:08.Ours has gone. We were very hungry in our house. Everybody is starting

:12:09. > :12:13.to get grumpy. The drive home, bank holiday jams tomorrow as well.

:12:14. > :12:19.Everybody will be fed up, back to work. You start having a row with

:12:20. > :12:28.your sister-in-law, that sort of thing. Is this autobiographical?

:12:29. > :12:36.Criticising relations is the most common cause of what? The goodwill

:12:37. > :12:43.cracking? I think so. The best thing is not to have anyone over. Sit on

:12:44. > :12:49.your own. With your new toaster. Connect with other family members by

:12:50. > :12:56.phone or e-mail. My brother is in York, he will not be able to get

:12:57. > :13:02.out. Identity. I don't know what is wrong with me. I have had the best

:13:03. > :13:09.Christmas -- I don't agree. You will not have a moody Monday. This is my

:13:10. > :13:14.Friday night. I have got the week. We are being flippant, but if you

:13:15. > :13:19.speak to charities about divorce or law years to deal with divorce or

:13:20. > :13:23.charities which deal with suicide, this time of year is very stressful,

:13:24. > :13:27.because we are all supposed to be enjoying ourselves, and for those

:13:28. > :13:32.who are not or having difficult times, this can be difficult times

:13:33. > :13:35.for some. The lawyers love the beginning of January because that is

:13:36. > :13:45.when they get all the calls about divorce. A very depressing topic!

:13:46. > :13:50.Along with the Jims! That is it for That Papers. We will be back with

:13:51. > :13:56.more at 11:30pm with Michael and Louise. At 11 o'clock we will have

:13:57. > :13:57.plenty more on the floods which have hit northern England. Coming up, it

:13:58. > :14:01.is Click.
