:00:20. > :00:22.Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers

:00:23. > :00:26.With me are Anne Ashworth, Assistant Editor of the Times, and

:00:27. > :00:28.the writer, broadcaster and Evening Standard columnist, Mihir Bose.

:00:29. > :00:41.The Independent on Sunday claims Barack Obama will

:00:42. > :00:45.use a visit to the UK next month to support David Cameron's campaign to

:00:46. > :00:49.The Sunday Times says Palace officials have stepped

:00:50. > :00:52.in to prevent the Queen from being used as a political football

:00:53. > :00:59.The Mail on Sunday have disclosures from a new book by the former

:01:00. > :01:01.Lib Dem cabinet minister, David Laws, who describes the "simmering

:01:02. > :01:04.tensions" between the Prime Minister and the tory EU Brexit campaigners,

:01:05. > :01:16.The Sunday Express claims that Turkey's bid to join

:01:17. > :01:19.the EU could have a major effect on the forthcoming EU vote.

:01:20. > :01:21.The Observer says the Chancellor is under pressure to

:01:22. > :01:24.ditch promised tax cuts for the well-off in Wednesday's budget.

:01:25. > :01:27.And The Sunday Telegraph reports that trains on HS2 rail scheme are

:01:28. > :01:43.at risk of derailment and catastrophic track failure.

:01:44. > :01:52.Let's begin. The Independent on Sunday has a story about Barack

:01:53. > :01:56.Obama coming here and this comes on the back, just a few days ago, on

:01:57. > :02:02.reports that he is very critical of David Cameron over the whole affair

:02:03. > :02:06.in Libya. It is extraordinary. Barack Obama will launch a charm

:02:07. > :02:12.offensive to make sure we stay in the European Union. He will be at a

:02:13. > :02:17.trade and technology show in Hamburg but he is going to come and see his

:02:18. > :02:24.dear old friend David Cameron of whom he is not in the least bit

:02:25. > :02:31.critical despite those are marked in -- those remarks in the Atlantic

:02:32. > :02:38.magazine. He seems let down over what happened in Libya and we know

:02:39. > :02:45.that is something that Barack Obama feels very sore about. Perhaps they

:02:46. > :02:48.are not such good friends. But they are parking that one and now it is

:02:49. > :02:54.all about bridge and staying in the European Union. It is the only show

:02:55. > :03:05.in town -- Britain. We even have Clarkson coming out saying we should

:03:06. > :03:10.stay. Everyone is obsessed. And we have a long way to go until June

:03:11. > :03:14.23. I think the Obama thing is interesting in that he has been

:03:15. > :03:18.shown as a campaigner but I think this is all connected with his

:03:19. > :03:21.legacy. It would not look good on his watch its Britain left the

:03:22. > :03:26.European Union and there were all sorts of other changes. The

:03:27. > :03:37.Americans have always wanted Britain in the European Union. What sort of

:03:38. > :03:41.world is he leaving behind and so forth. A world where Britain is not

:03:42. > :03:48.an European Union and Libya has gone to the dogs. Might it be a slightly

:03:49. > :03:53.awkward meeting between Barack Obama and David Cameron given those

:03:54. > :03:59.critical remarks? They will have a lovely party. And of course the

:04:00. > :04:04.president's wife will come along in the two first ladies will be there

:04:05. > :04:11.together. In the kitchen wearing very nice frocks. Is the special

:04:12. > :04:15.relationship still very special? I think so. There will always be

:04:16. > :04:19.hiccups along the way but it is a very special relationship and now

:04:20. > :04:24.Barack Obama needs to look to his legacy. It is more special here than

:04:25. > :04:33.it is in America. Let's talk about the Sunday Times. They have a story

:04:34. > :04:38.on Buckingham Palace and that whole row rumbling on. They don't want the

:04:39. > :04:42.Queen involved in any of this. They feel that she has been dragged into

:04:43. > :04:48.this argument, it is not where she should be and they want to say, no

:04:49. > :04:54.more. She's not a spokesperson for either side. This is after the story

:04:55. > :05:02.in the Sun. Saying she was in support of a Brexit. She does not

:05:03. > :05:09.want to be involved in this. What did you make of that story in the

:05:10. > :05:16.Sun? What I would love to know is who told what to wear. That is the

:05:17. > :05:21.story I would like to have read -- where. Exactly how they got the

:05:22. > :05:29.story and how they stood it up and the role they played. They were very

:05:30. > :05:35.confident, when the Sun's editor was interviewed, he suggested it had

:05:36. > :05:44.come from more than one source. Two people who were probably at the

:05:45. > :05:48.lunch. It is possible that Rupert Murdoch had dinner with Michael Gove

:05:49. > :05:55.and over dinner he let something slip. You probably know more about

:05:56. > :06:01.this than I do. I can't comment. In the Daily Mail on Sunday for

:06:02. > :06:06.tomorrow, it is all about who said what meetings shouldn't have been

:06:07. > :06:13.reported on. Someone took a note about conversations between the Lib

:06:14. > :06:20.Dems and David Cameron when they were in government. Since you have

:06:21. > :06:31.moved on, this is about a new book by the former cabinet minister David

:06:32. > :06:36.Laws. Good old-fashioned Sunday journalism. The Lib Dems have not

:06:37. > :06:42.been in that for a long time and what we don't know is the actual

:06:43. > :06:48.extracts that have been published, we have only seen the news stories.

:06:49. > :06:56.On the basis of this story, David Cameron is very critical of Michael

:06:57. > :07:00.Gove. He called him a Maoist. He didn't explain that. He makes it

:07:01. > :07:04.very clear that Boris Johnson is after his job in his opinion. If

:07:05. > :07:08.these allegations are true, it is very damning. There are also

:07:09. > :07:23.allegations about the Queen from Nick Clegg when he was having lunch

:07:24. > :07:26.with her, about having a different succession then has been set out and

:07:27. > :07:32.he asked if it bothered her and she said she would be dead by then. It

:07:33. > :07:39.seems suspicious. Just leave her alone. The Daily Express still on

:07:40. > :07:45.the referendum, we just can't get away from it. They have a different

:07:46. > :07:51.angle with Turkey, saying if Turkey joins the European Union, which

:07:52. > :07:54.isn't imminent, we have to stress, that would put off voters and many

:07:55. > :08:00.of them would say no. It is the sheer size of the population. It is

:08:01. > :08:10.a very populous country and it seems to me that when polled, many have

:08:11. > :08:15.said they are out if Turkey is in. It is the migration issue. Also

:08:16. > :08:18.Turkey would bring an enormous Muslim population in and given what

:08:19. > :08:26.is happening in Turkey now, Turkey seems to be moving away. The only

:08:27. > :08:30.secular democratic Muslim state in the world for a long time seems to

:08:31. > :08:34.be going towards dictatorship with a newspaper is being banned and so

:08:35. > :08:39.forth. We should stress that Turkey is not going to join the European

:08:40. > :08:49.Union potentially for years. Five -10 years. I think this could be a

:08:50. > :08:53.fear for people who want to leave. That Turkey will one day want to

:08:54. > :08:58.come in and that one day we will be able to do anything about it. But

:08:59. > :09:03.what sort of timescale are we talking about? 10-15 years? One

:09:04. > :09:09.doesn't know. I want to know why it is we feel we can do nothing about

:09:10. > :09:12.the European Union. As if they are these faceless bureaucrats who we

:09:13. > :09:17.cannot hold to account. Because we don't even know their names. We

:09:18. > :09:21.don't know where they live or how they have got there. There is very

:09:22. > :09:27.little knowledge about the European Union. I would struggle to name my

:09:28. > :09:36.MEP, I don't know about you. Very disappointing. Obviously we could

:09:37. > :09:47.very easily. Moving on... The Observer has the budget, not the

:09:48. > :09:51.referendum. George Osborne and his tax plans. It is interesting, this

:09:52. > :09:57.idea he has. He wants to take more people out of the higher tax

:09:58. > :09:59.bracket, into which many people have been dragged were not

:10:00. > :10:06.extraordinarily well-off. For many people earning 43,000 -?44,000 which

:10:07. > :10:10.is the level at which you start to pay higher taxes, it seems like a

:10:11. > :10:15.very good wage indeed, but there has got to be some giveaway to middle

:10:16. > :10:25.Britain in the budget and I think that he might try to bring this one

:10:26. > :10:29.in despite criticism. He is fighting for his... Everyone sees him is

:10:30. > :10:32.fighting this leadership campaign against Boris Johnson already, even

:10:33. > :10:36.though David Cameron is obviously only worried about Johnson. He is

:10:37. > :10:40.fighting to succeed him in the argument will be, we have heard a

:10:41. > :10:45.lot about the growing disparity between the rich and the poor and if

:10:46. > :10:48.he gets this wrong, he will be presented at least happy he has got

:10:49. > :10:53.a few things wrong. He had to withdraw on the Sunday laws,

:10:54. > :11:04.extending the hours. That will come to hours -- that will come before we

:11:05. > :11:10.have to decide on the European Union and that may affect his chances of

:11:11. > :11:18.getting into number 10. He has been... Richard Gere has been on him

:11:19. > :11:24.to do summing to eradicate the homeless from the streets and I

:11:25. > :11:31.would say he would have to balance this properly. Finishing with the

:11:32. > :11:35.Telegraph, a story on HS2 and one on Heathrow. Transport stories. The

:11:36. > :11:38.Heathrow story is the more interesting one. I don't know why

:11:39. > :11:44.they haven't let on that. They have an interview which says the cabinet

:11:45. > :11:48.will block Heathrow expansion which seems to have gone against what was

:11:49. > :11:51.generally agreed upon by David Cameron that no announcement will be

:11:52. > :11:58.made until after the mayoral election. Something to think that it

:11:59. > :12:02.will take place at all, and this does raise a question of what will

:12:03. > :12:16.happen to airport capacity. Where will we get more runways? Will it be

:12:17. > :12:24.Gatwick? The box has been passed. -- buck. What about HS2? It is the idea

:12:25. > :12:30.that such will be the velocity of these trains towards Birmingham,

:12:31. > :12:38.that it will cause the rails to corrode. I don't know much about

:12:39. > :12:41.it. They go too fast? Yes and it apparently has not been taken into

:12:42. > :12:47.account. But it is a high-speed railway? Yes. The report has

:12:48. > :12:52.suggested that not enough work has been done to modernize the railway.

:12:53. > :12:58.Not enough study has been made of the impact of improving the rails

:12:59. > :13:03.will be on what is still a very old infrastructure. It is all in the

:13:04. > :13:07.future, as is the referendum, has is the budget. Anyway let's not get

:13:08. > :13:09.overly philosophical. Thank you Anne Ashworth and

:13:10. > :13:13.Mihir Bose.
