:00:11. > :00:15.Let's look now at tomorrow's newspapers.
:00:16. > :00:17.With me are Paul Johnson, the Deputy Editor of the Guardian,
:00:18. > :00:19.and Tim Collins, a former Conservative MP and
:00:20. > :00:21.Managing Director of Bell Pottinger Public Affairs.
:00:22. > :00:37.Of course, there is only one story we will be talking about. The death
:00:38. > :00:43.of Jo Cox is reflected on all the papers. We will show you throughout
:00:44. > :00:51.our discussion. A very stark front page coming up. That tells us
:00:52. > :00:56.exactly who Jo was. Proud to be a Yorkshire woman, a mother and
:00:57. > :01:01.dedicated MP? This is a truly full story. It is almost as if it has
:01:02. > :01:05.reverberated right the way through the nation. A lot of people sitting
:01:06. > :01:15.at home tonight will somehow feel that they knew her. She was utterly
:01:16. > :01:20.decent and committed. She was fair and open. She was obviously a
:01:21. > :01:25.politician with a real conscience. The places she travelled to, lived
:01:26. > :01:29.her life completely in the service of others whether it was in
:01:30. > :01:35.international affairs or more recently as a West Yorkshire MP,
:01:36. > :01:40.politicians from all parties had so many wonderful things to say about
:01:41. > :01:44.her. They have. You talk about the places she went. She went to some of
:01:45. > :01:49.the most dangerous places you would think in the world. Was near,
:01:50. > :01:55.Darfur, Syria. She always came back home safely. But in her own home
:01:56. > :02:01.High Street she was not able to be safe. As Paul says, it was
:02:02. > :02:06.particularly tragic because she leaves behind two very young
:02:07. > :02:16.children who will not see their mother again. It is terrible. She
:02:17. > :02:19.believed in a better world and fought for it every day. She has
:02:20. > :02:28.these small children who were often to be seen in portcullis house if
:02:29. > :02:32.she was not going to be home in time to say good night to them. It is her
:02:33. > :02:37.husband of those children you really think about. It is not only that she
:02:38. > :02:43.had this marvellous life of public service. There are lots of people
:02:44. > :02:47.who didn't know her, like me, but I almost feel like I did because of
:02:48. > :02:50.the things which have been said about her. It's not just that that
:02:51. > :02:55.wonderful life has been brought to an end, it is that these others,
:02:56. > :02:59.particularly her husband and her children, will have their lives
:03:00. > :03:06.totally transformed for the worse in a way which just seems unimaginable
:03:07. > :03:09.and impossible to understand. I have been thinking all afternoon and
:03:10. > :03:12.evening how wonderful it would've been to have known her because of
:03:13. > :03:17.the tributes which have been paid to her. The statement from her husband
:03:18. > :03:24.within an hour or so of dying, having put that picture on Twitter
:03:25. > :03:28.which he only took yesterday, he has said we need to make sure the hatred
:03:29. > :03:34.which killed her as the thing we battle against fun no-one. This is
:03:35. > :03:39.now starting to be reflected. We have some comment in the papers.
:03:40. > :03:44.There appears to be a bit of a change going on. There is a piece by
:03:45. > :03:48.Michael Deacon on the front of the Telegraph which says public
:03:49. > :03:56.discourse about politicians has turned ugly recently. He has said he
:03:57. > :03:59.is sick of the poison which has been poured into the system. People
:04:00. > :04:05.should stop thinking we are ruled by the cabal is of the greedy and
:04:06. > :04:13.callous. It is a very powerful piece. But some of the people
:04:14. > :04:20.pouring poison into the system are some politicians themselves. I
:04:21. > :04:23.wonder whether this tragedy will change some of that. The referendum
:04:24. > :04:31.campaign has been suspended for 24 hours. It would be quite a
:04:32. > :04:37.remarkable thing if the town did change. It would be lovely.
:04:38. > :04:42.Strategically it be in the interest for both campaigns to be positive.
:04:43. > :04:47.Rather than knocking seven bells out of each other. Maybe after this
:04:48. > :04:57.tragedy they will do that for that reason. Ball is right. The piece on
:04:58. > :05:02.the front of the Telegraph, the whole thesis is saying that after
:05:03. > :05:07.the MPs expenses scandal, we have decided to think of all members of
:05:08. > :05:12.Parliament, right, left, senior, Junior, as corrupt and trying to
:05:13. > :05:17.milk the system. And that really is not true. The vast majority of MPs
:05:18. > :05:22.do the best service for the public they possibly can. And the story we
:05:23. > :05:27.are hearing about Jo Cox me I hope encourage people to understand that
:05:28. > :05:36.she coolly was an MP different from that. -- clearly. Polly Toynbee
:05:37. > :05:40.talks about a chilling culture war breaking out, divide deeper than she
:05:41. > :05:45.had ever known. A tweet from Robert Harris, the former political editor,
:05:46. > :05:57.he talks about the referendum in terms of being depressing, divisive
:05:58. > :06:09.and you pick -- to pick the tests -- Cupid litters. .
:06:10. > :06:17.We know there have been tragedies in the past. We also know that for what
:06:18. > :06:24.it is worth the early indications are that the person arrested appears
:06:25. > :06:29.to have a history of mental illness. You simply cannot see that they are
:06:30. > :06:33.attached to one cause another. It important to recognise this as a
:06:34. > :06:37.charity, whether people agreed with or didn't agree with her, the
:06:38. > :06:43.strength of British democracy is that constituents can go and see an
:06:44. > :06:55.MP and mustn't lose that. We must I hope be more civilised in our public
:06:56. > :07:02.discourse. I really hope neither campaign tries to take advantage of
:07:03. > :07:08.this. We always think it is so much more difficult to get hold of a
:07:09. > :07:12.weapon legally in the UK. That will raise questions. This thing is
:07:13. > :07:18.puzzling. On makeshift gun, whatever that is. A knife was involved in 12.
:07:19. > :07:23.There was a lot of reporting tonight about the individual who has been
:07:24. > :07:28.arrested. He lived with his grandmother for many years. And odd
:07:29. > :07:34.job man. None of these things sort of ad up in that sense. A lot of
:07:35. > :07:39.attention on the words which are apparently shouted, Britain first.
:07:40. > :07:46.Some reports are saying it was put Britain first. It adds a chilling
:07:47. > :07:50.element to it. The far right political party of that name have
:07:51. > :07:57.said the condemn what has happened and are not aware of the person who
:07:58. > :08:01.was involved. Absolutely. The Guardian wrote an extremely good
:08:02. > :08:05.editorial on the subject of the Orlando tragedy earlier this week,
:08:06. > :08:09.pointed out that in that context we need to be calm and not judge groups
:08:10. > :08:14.according to what individuals to. And I think that it is true for this
:08:15. > :08:22.as well. The sun has used a picture that Brendan Cox treated of Jo when
:08:23. > :08:26.he had heard that she had died, it was sometime before we had those
:08:27. > :08:38.reports the hospital that she died at 2pm this afternoon, but it raises
:08:39. > :08:42.questions about the safety of MPs. She was doing what MPs do all the
:08:43. > :08:46.time. She had a surgery that would've been advertising the local
:08:47. > :08:50.paper, so everyone locally would have known what was going on. Some
:08:51. > :08:55.MPs operate on a system whereby you have to book appointment, others say
:08:56. > :08:59.you can turn up randomly. He appears to have just been outside. I really
:09:00. > :09:03.think it is important. One of the real strengths of the British
:09:04. > :09:08.system, in America people represent ten times as many as they do here,
:09:09. > :09:12.so you can't have that kind of relationship. Most of Europe had
:09:13. > :09:16.different voting systems. QB have the ability for an MP to be part of
:09:17. > :09:20.the community and I really hope you don't lose that. It's such a
:09:21. > :09:24.precious part of how we are governed in this country. Especially for Jo,
:09:25. > :09:26.who was
