:00:07. > :00:13.Good evening. I want to bring you up to date with the developing story in

:00:14. > :00:19.Nice this evening, it is Bastille Day in France. This is right in the

:00:20. > :00:25.south of the country and we are seeing some quite horrific pictures,

:00:26. > :00:30.a Bastille Day celebration on going in the city tonight. It appears that

:00:31. > :00:34.a truck ploughed into a crowd celebrating as fireworks were going

:00:35. > :00:40.off in the city, customary on Bastille Day, you can see an area

:00:41. > :00:46.close to the promenade which is on the front, people running away from

:00:47. > :00:49.that area. Some of the pictures on social media, quite distressing,

:00:50. > :00:55.obviously we cannot show you those. Unconfirmed reports about

:00:56. > :00:58.fatalities, some correspondence saying the local prefecture is

:00:59. > :01:04.saying at least 12 people dead, and many injured, the prefect talking

:01:05. > :01:10.about a terrorist attack. Some reports of gunfire but that is

:01:11. > :01:14.perhaps a little premature because at the moment, anyone who has been

:01:15. > :01:18.to a Bastille Day Day celebration in France knows there are lots of

:01:19. > :01:21.explosions and bangs and fireworks so it will be perhaps difficult to

:01:22. > :01:27.differentiate between what is gunfire and not what is certain is

:01:28. > :01:33.that there has been what seems to be at this stage, an attack of some

:01:34. > :01:38.description, perhaps a terror attack, a truck driving into the

:01:39. > :01:43.crowd celebrating on the front. You see these pictures, crowds including

:01:44. > :01:49.a woman with a pushchair running for safety, clambering over each other

:01:50. > :01:56.in their bid to escape. And we are still waiting for some of the

:01:57. > :02:01.reports from police on the scene. There was a spate of these sorts of

:02:02. > :02:06.attacks, you might remember last year, around the time of Christmas

:02:07. > :02:11.markets, a number of vehicles that drove into crowds of people either

:02:12. > :02:15.at bus stops or in markets and of course, France still on a high state

:02:16. > :02:22.of alert, Francois Hollande, in his speech the other day, a customary

:02:23. > :02:26.speech ahead of Bastille Day, said they were thinking of relaxing the

:02:27. > :02:31.highest terror alert sometime in the middle of July. If this proves to be

:02:32. > :02:34.a terror attack, that will be reassessed. Some other interesting

:02:35. > :02:38.lines of news from France, but we glossed over in the last few days

:02:39. > :02:42.with all the events in Downing Street, there was a report yesterday

:02:43. > :02:47.that in fact the intelligence services in France were looking for

:02:48. > :02:51.someone who might have been linked to Bataclan attacks, they were

:02:52. > :02:57.saying the ringleader may not have been the man who was pulling that

:02:58. > :03:00.attack together in November and so there is still a very life and

:03:01. > :03:05.ongoing investigation into that attack in November. France is still

:03:06. > :03:13.on the highest alert, they just had the football tournament and they had

:03:14. > :03:16.a record number of police on the on the streets, and it passed off

:03:17. > :03:20.peacefully, we are pleased to say but if these reports are true,

:03:21. > :03:27.terror has returned to the streets of France tonight. For those of you

:03:28. > :03:33.just joining us, just to remind you... We have these pictures coming

:03:34. > :03:41.in from the front in Nice, you can see people running away in panic.

:03:42. > :03:45.This is, on this area, it is a Corniche, there is a long coastal

:03:46. > :03:52.road which goes around the Corniche in Nice, that is the promenade and

:03:53. > :03:56.it is in that sort of area, we have seen pictures of the truck, we will

:03:57. > :04:00.see if we can get you some pictures that we can show you because some of

:04:01. > :04:03.these pictures are quite distressing, but it is quite a big

:04:04. > :04:06.truck that has driven straight through the middle of the crowd and

:04:07. > :04:14.had appeared they were gathering and standing together as this firework

:04:15. > :04:19.display was ongoing. I think that is all I can tell you about that at the

:04:20. > :04:24.moment. We will plug on with the paper review. The job easily we do

:04:25. > :04:30.at this time in the evening. When we get more news, I may well break into

:04:31. > :04:32.the paper review and bring you that. Let's look at what is on the front

:04:33. > :04:35.pages. With me are the Daily Mirror

:04:36. > :04:37.columnist, Susie Boniface, and the Daily Telegraph columnist,

:04:38. > :04:44.Tim Stanley. Thank you both for your patience.

:04:45. > :04:46.You will understand as the story breaks, we may have to dip into it.

:04:47. > :05:45.Tomorrow's front pages first of all.

:05:46. > :05:55.So... Let's begin, starting with The Daily Express. I just wonder, Susie,

:05:56. > :06:03.what you make of the constant comparing... You know what I make of

:06:04. > :06:07.it, I just told you. The new Prime Minister, with the iron lady, she

:06:08. > :06:11.has steel. But you don't like this. She's only been in the job for

:06:12. > :06:18.24-hour race and it's kind of, I think it's appalling, as a nation,

:06:19. > :06:21.the only way we can look and consider what the new Prime Minister

:06:22. > :06:29.is doing is to compare her to 125 years ago who happens to share a

:06:30. > :06:33.similar set of features. Why isn't Theresa May compared to Tony Blair

:06:34. > :06:37.are David Cameron or John Major or lots of different people in

:06:38. > :06:41.different ways? 20 of the May leaders, we can compare to other

:06:42. > :06:46.female leaders of that than Maggie. The idea that she must be like the

:06:47. > :06:49.iron lady or not like the iron lady and she will have this throughout

:06:50. > :06:55.her Premiership, whether she does well or appallingly, right-wing or

:06:56. > :07:00.left-wing, successful or not, the economy tanks or brooms, she will be

:07:01. > :07:05.told she is just like Maggie, better than Maggie, not as good as Maggie.

:07:06. > :07:12.She is not Maggie, she is Theresa May. We can only regard her through

:07:13. > :07:16.the prism of Margaret Thatcher, I think it lets all of us down. In a

:07:17. > :07:21.similar style, Tim, the front page of the Guardian, a host of women and

:07:22. > :07:27.they are not as tightly cropped in terms of the picture as the men with

:07:28. > :07:32.the, you see a lot of what they are wearing. What are you dry to say? It

:07:33. > :07:36.is almost as if it invites us to make a comment on the dress, which

:07:37. > :07:43.you wouldn't do with men. There is no point, because they are wearing

:07:44. > :07:48.the same damn thing! Look at you. This is true but the narrative of

:07:49. > :07:52.this Cabinet is that it is a Cabinet of people we have not seen go so

:07:53. > :07:58.far. A lot of the talk is about how many women are in it. I take your

:07:59. > :08:02.point, it is frustrating that of and Premier will become Perdita Maggie

:08:03. > :08:06.but I think, in one sense, the comparison is actually quite

:08:07. > :08:10.fruitful, in the last 24 hours. If you are a woman in politics, not

:08:11. > :08:14.through any fault of your own, operate outside the usual networks

:08:15. > :08:19.of influence on friendship and one thing we saw with the sackings, is

:08:20. > :08:23.the death of chum Chrissy, the government up by best friends... The

:08:24. > :08:28.Notting Hill set. You cannot have that, women in politics don't

:08:29. > :08:31.operate those networks because they are very often the only woman in the

:08:32. > :08:37.room so I think the whole style of government will change because we

:08:38. > :08:47.won't be led by a bunch of files. Is it possible we can be friends... All

:08:48. > :08:51.the men in Cabinet could be great chums offer us? Particularly when

:08:52. > :08:58.you're dealing with Tory men who see life entirely in metaphors of

:08:59. > :09:02.cricket... Nanny or mummy... To be led by a woman changes the dynamics.

:09:03. > :09:07.Let me change it a little, is this the winning Cabinet we were

:09:08. > :09:11.expecting, I counted eight, seven B four out of 22... Appointments based

:09:12. > :09:15.on talent, I don't think it's got anything to do with that, I don't

:09:16. > :09:21.think she's the kind of leader who had to follow a 50-50 split. You

:09:22. > :09:24.talk about times, she has not rewarded chums but rewarded those

:09:25. > :09:28.who were loyal. All the people working with her at the Home Office.

:09:29. > :09:32.The advisers will come in but you can't possibly argue that these are

:09:33. > :09:37.all appointments based on talent, when one of them is Andrea Leadsom

:09:38. > :09:42.who was regarded as the worst treasury minister they have ever

:09:43. > :09:50.had... By whom? Completely unnamed Whitehall mandarins. And Liz Truss

:09:51. > :09:55.or didn't do terribly well... That is the key thing, she is for Brexit.

:09:56. > :10:00.The reshuffle, it's not just the death of chums, it's about making

:10:01. > :10:05.breaks it happen, we thought the was a possibility she would seek a post

:10:06. > :10:09.coming consensus but no, every portfolio that has something to do

:10:10. > :10:12.with Europe, she has put brakes a person in there, that explains

:10:13. > :10:16.Andrea Leadsom, she will be heading up an buyer and in one the things

:10:17. > :10:19.she will be doing is repatriating control over agriculture and

:10:20. > :10:24.fisheries so she's saying to people like her, you wanted it so now you

:10:25. > :10:30.make it happen. It's not just sweeping... She has got to unify the

:10:31. > :10:32.party, she has got to have Brexiteers and remainders in the

:10:33. > :10:37.party but there were other more copper don't Brexiteers who could

:10:38. > :10:43.give interviews to the press without saying the wrong stupid thing. I am

:10:44. > :10:47.going to have to posit because I will remind people about what is

:10:48. > :10:50.going on in France at the moment. Tim and Suzy, thank you for the

:10:51. > :10:56.moment. If you are joining us, we are hearing reports of what appears

:10:57. > :11:01.to be an attack in the southern French city of Nice, people

:11:02. > :11:05.celebrating Bastille Day in Nice this evening, gathered for a

:11:06. > :11:10.firework display and you can see pictures of people running away from

:11:11. > :11:15.an area right on the front, alongside the promenade which is an

:11:16. > :11:20.area that runs around the Corniche in Nice and it appears that this

:11:21. > :11:24.lorry drove into a big crowd of people as they were watching the

:11:25. > :11:29.fireworks display. The early reports from the prefect, 12 people have

:11:30. > :11:34.killed and several injured, those are unconfirmed reports at the

:11:35. > :11:39.moment. But the prefect also saying that he thinks it is a terror

:11:40. > :11:42.attack. We are seeing these pictures of people running away and some

:11:43. > :11:49.quite distressing pictures as well of the street where there are people

:11:50. > :11:53.lying in the road who have clearly been killed and run over by this

:11:54. > :11:57.track, the prefect saying a dozen people killed but there are other

:11:58. > :12:02.reports that it could be dozens, there could be many more than 12 and

:12:03. > :12:05.so, you will appreciate, it's quite early at the moment but this looks

:12:06. > :12:12.like a rather serious attack in Nice and an Bastille Day, at a time when

:12:13. > :12:16.the country is at a heightened sense of alert. The President saying in

:12:17. > :12:19.his interview for Bastille Day the other day he was thinking of

:12:20. > :12:25.relaxing the highest terror threat in mid-July, a record nine birth of

:12:26. > :12:29.police and security services, the Army as well on the streets through

:12:30. > :12:33.the football tournament, the European Championships which passed

:12:34. > :12:38.off peacefully but were always these fears that something like this might

:12:39. > :12:43.happen and we are now getting reports that it could be many more

:12:44. > :12:47.than 12, one report I am seeing, perhaps as many as 30 people killed,

:12:48. > :12:52.if that proves to be the case, is very serious indeed. Will be a huge

:12:53. > :12:56.concern in France this evening. We will bring you much more on this

:12:57. > :12:59.from our sister station, BBC world, we will be with you over the course

:13:00. > :13:01.of the next hour, stay
