:00:00. > :00:00.I will be talking to the celebrated Irish novelist John Banville about

:00:00. > :00:12.his memoir in Dublin. Hello and welcome to our look ahead

:00:13. > :00:16.to what the papers will be With me are the broadcaster,

:00:17. > :00:19.John Stapleton and the former Conservative Employment minister,

:00:20. > :00:33.Esther McVey. A few people say they are always on

:00:34. > :00:34.together. It has happened quite a lot.

:00:35. > :00:37.The Financial Times which says the government's

:00:38. > :00:39.considering paying the EU billions of pounds to retain Single Market

:00:40. > :00:44.The Guardian also leads with Brexit - it reports fears by Ireland

:00:45. > :00:47.of a looming economic crisis on both sides of the border.

:00:48. > :00:50.The Express says that pro-Remain MPs are plotting to halt a full exit

:00:51. > :00:58.A similar lead for the Telegraph - this time the Chancellor Philip

:00:59. > :01:00.Hammond is accused of trying to 'undermine Brexit' by 'arguing

:01:01. > :01:07.The Sun's top story is on so-called SAS 'mercy killing' -

:01:08. > :01:11.it reports Prince Harry has described a probe as a witch hunt.

:01:12. > :01:14.The Mirror splashes on the search for missing toddler Ben Needham -

:01:15. > :01:17.it shows his grieving mother and sister and the police search

:01:18. > :01:23.The Metro reports claims by a charity that seven out

:01:24. > :01:27.of ten tenants are living in damp or infested homes.

:01:28. > :01:29.Slightly different figures in the Eye -

:01:30. > :01:32.which says that 40% of homes are below an acceptable

:01:33. > :01:45.The Financial Times, we could go mad. It has everything. Kaplan looks

:01:46. > :01:54.at paying billions to keep single market access for the city. It is a

:01:55. > :02:00.difficult balancing act to get it right to make sure we have access we

:02:01. > :02:08.need whilst satisfying what people think they want from Brexit. This is

:02:09. > :02:12.the FT so the financiers, you hear bankers are pushing the government

:02:13. > :02:18.to find a way for their sector to keep as many passport rights as

:02:19. > :02:23.possible so whilst I understand that, of course they would, it is

:02:24. > :02:28.their sector and employs a lot of people in the country, 11% GDP so

:02:29. > :02:32.they are looking at what is the best way they can support them but the

:02:33. > :02:38.same time the government has to weigh up so for people who are

:02:39. > :02:42.producers, exporters, for them with the pound going lower it is working

:02:43. > :02:50.for them and if you look at what Mervyn King says he was more

:02:51. > :02:57.interested in industry then now... Mark Carney is a Goldman Sachs

:02:58. > :03:03.ex-employee and looking at finances, he says look at it in the 360, we

:03:04. > :03:10.are seeing a boom for exporters producers and it up. It is more

:03:11. > :03:16.evidence that they will not be as simple as we were led to believe.

:03:17. > :03:21.Many people voted let's leave that we do not pay billions of pounds but

:03:22. > :03:26.we may have to continue to pay billions. This is a push from the

:03:27. > :03:31.banking sector. It says you have to listen to the silences from Theresa

:03:32. > :03:38.May. Theresa has been careful not to rule this out, you have to listen

:03:39. > :03:44.carefully to the silences. The point I would make is in addition to this

:03:45. > :03:51.we are learning many people would like to control immigration but it

:03:52. > :03:55.may be that in the future EU workers are allowed in if they get a Visa

:03:56. > :04:05.and there may be special concessions without whom... It is not as

:04:06. > :04:09.clear-cut. It was about control so letting in people you want to let in

:04:10. > :04:13.so if that is highly qualified engineers or bankers, that is what

:04:14. > :04:18.we want, not letting in anybody through freedom of movement and

:04:19. > :04:26.Theresa May is right to look at all of the options on the table and

:04:27. > :04:31.choose what is best the UK. You know these people better than she or I,

:04:32. > :04:35.will Philip Hammond survive because he is having second thoughts and his

:04:36. > :04:42.Chancellor of the Exchequer and is lukewarm about the proposals. I hope

:04:43. > :04:45.so because weather in the Cabinet or around a business board, you need

:04:46. > :04:50.different people are challenging you, you do not want an echo and

:04:51. > :04:55.everybody agreeing so for him coming forward with these cautionary tales

:04:56. > :04:59.and backing up another sector, it is important. As long as people

:05:00. > :05:04.understand what the country voted for. She is the cat s mother. That

:05:05. > :05:25.is what I was told. Clegg and his cronies scorn for

:05:26. > :05:29.fury, trying to keep Britain shackled to the EU, contempt for

:05:30. > :05:35.democracy. This is nothing new about this, we have known for a long time

:05:36. > :05:39.people will do all they can to delay and frustrate our departure from the

:05:40. > :05:46.European Union. This is a reflection of that and whether they will

:05:47. > :05:51.succeed is another issue. There has been a large cohort of people who

:05:52. > :05:56.did not want it to happen whether they call it the establishment or

:05:57. > :06:00.the media or Nick Clegg or whoever. But listen to their views, that is

:06:01. > :06:06.important but most importantly listen to the views of the voting

:06:07. > :06:10.public and the express said 99% of people on their poll said they would

:06:11. > :06:16.be furious if Brexit was blocked and that is what they need to look at,

:06:17. > :06:26.Mr Clegg! The Guardian. I will carry on. It is your show! The plan for no

:06:27. > :06:34.bomb zone in Syria ends in failure. Talks to try to make some progress

:06:35. > :06:37.on what is happening in Syria and a which is under bombardment, quarter

:06:38. > :06:43.of a million in the east of the city living in dire conditions. They

:06:44. > :06:50.started off in Lausanne and now London, what has gone wrong? I watch

:06:51. > :06:57.the news and saw Mr Kerry and Boris emerge and I felt despair. Not to

:06:58. > :07:01.criticise their sterling efforts but they look like a couple of people

:07:02. > :07:06.who have run out of options. I cannot blame them, Kerry has worked

:07:07. > :07:11.tirelessly to get a solution to this appalling situation and I do not

:07:12. > :07:15.know what you do. Some will favour military action, Kerry might but few

:07:16. > :07:21.others will at this stage and I feel, it is shameful that we are

:07:22. > :07:26.sitting here, I include us, the media, isn't there more we could do,

:07:27. > :07:33.I know we reported all the time but there is so much horror and kids and

:07:34. > :07:37.women being killed and bombarded everyday, as the media, are we doing

:07:38. > :07:42.our job to convey the horror of this, it needs Bob Geldof, not to

:07:43. > :07:47.raise money but raise awareness of what is happening. Quarter of a

:07:48. > :07:50.million people are being slaughtered. We do not show the

:07:51. > :07:56.worst pictures, I wonder if it would make a difference. We have standards

:07:57. > :08:01.preventing us sharing the worst of pictures,... The media has done a

:08:02. > :08:07.good job in showing what is going on and the words from Boris Johnson

:08:08. > :08:12.here, there was a lack of political appetite to put it mildly, people do

:08:13. > :08:18.not want to go to war or get into a situation so they have tried and

:08:19. > :08:24.they are looking at further sanctions, I thought Boris s idea of

:08:25. > :08:30.a no bomb zone, not a no-fly zone but a no bomb zone, should they bomb

:08:31. > :08:34.hospitals, schools, kids, then we will look at what we would bomb in

:08:35. > :08:40.return so you will say, we will bomb... If they take off from this

:08:41. > :08:45.airstrip to bomb, it would be the airstrip that is bombed and the

:08:46. > :08:50.radar centres if that is what they do. But that could escalate into

:08:51. > :08:56.something more horrific. But if you are looking at things to stop

:08:57. > :09:02.250,000 people being subjected to nonstop terrorise a she, brutality,

:09:03. > :09:09.death and psychological mind games, I thought his no bomb zone is a good

:09:10. > :09:15.way forward. I do not knock him for that but I feel despair. Angela

:09:16. > :09:21.Merkel says she said she cannot persuade her allies so nobody wants

:09:22. > :09:27.to get involved. Looking at the Metro and housing in this country.

:09:28. > :09:30.For intent homes are below the living standards could billions in

:09:31. > :09:38.cramped and unaffordable housing. This is a report from shelter, the

:09:39. > :09:43.housing charity, where are the standards coming from? It is the

:09:44. > :09:49.question we asked one we saw the brief on this story. The standards

:09:50. > :09:53.set by shelter and it's us Morrie and they have developed a living

:09:54. > :09:59.homes standard through a series of workshops and surveys with the

:10:00. > :10:04.public -- IPSA last Morrie. They have set the standard like a living

:10:05. > :10:08.homes standard and it is on that basis they come up with these

:10:09. > :10:12.figures. Both of us would be happier if we knew more about the criteria

:10:13. > :10:18.they set. It sounds as scandalous and horrendous,... It is the way you

:10:19. > :10:28.guarantee getting a front-page publicity. For a good cause.

:10:29. > :10:33.Generation exploited, it says 70% of tenants are getting a bad deal. And

:10:34. > :10:37.whilst that is really important you look into that and see what you're

:10:38. > :10:44.doing, it seems because the terms have used were terms that we used a

:10:45. > :10:49.couple of years ago, a 30 degrees campaign so it is a campaign, a way

:10:50. > :10:54.to get you on the front pages but we do have laws and standards by which

:10:55. > :10:59.you have to adhere to cannot read out homes like that so it'll be

:11:00. > :11:05.interesting to see where this goes but then, job done. We are talking

:11:06. > :11:09.about it and it is raising concerns. And they are quite legitimate. The

:11:10. > :11:18.Daily Telegraph, the picture story is should Shami Chakrabarti... She

:11:19. > :11:23.is the shadow Attorney General facing MPs questions over the timing

:11:24. > :11:27.of her peerage. The questions are did she know she was getting that

:11:28. > :11:31.and is that while there was a whitewash on the report she was

:11:32. > :11:39.doing into labour about anti-Semitism and to be fair this is

:11:40. > :11:42.a lady who did have high standing in society, a lady who many people

:11:43. > :11:50.would have looked up to but this whole thing looks very shifty, very

:11:51. > :11:56.shady, she has been bought off by a peerage and a position, she is

:11:57. > :12:02.shadow Attorney General in Corbyn s government and the report which was

:12:03. > :12:07.a whitewash another Home Affairs Select Committee yesterday came out

:12:08. > :12:16.with a report criticising Corbyn over institutional anti-Semitism. In

:12:17. > :12:20.fairness, Shami Chakrabarti, I know her, I have nothing but the highest

:12:21. > :12:27.regard for her respect for her, she is a terrifically lady. But we do

:12:28. > :12:30.not know she has been bought off. She could have had a peerage at any

:12:31. > :12:38.time because she has done so much with human rights... The timing is

:12:39. > :12:48.not good. What happened was she did not answer the questions to Keith

:12:49. > :12:52.Vaz... She never did. I'm afraid when the select committee asking

:12:53. > :12:56.questions, you do not say, you could've heard an interview. You

:12:57. > :13:00.answer them and the whole timing of this and she needs to start

:13:01. > :13:08.answering questions instead of saying, I'm not around to comment.

:13:09. > :13:16.Why was it a whitewash as everyone says? The FT, Trump escalate US

:13:17. > :13:20.election rigging claims as Clinton structures poll lead. This was doing

:13:21. > :13:24.the rounds yesterday that he has returned to this theme and it is not

:13:25. > :13:29.just the media but he says polling stations. I would love more detail

:13:30. > :13:34.of what is alleging because it sounds like the last refuge of a

:13:35. > :13:42.scoundrel. Blame the media for everything and say it is rigged. It

:13:43. > :13:49.sounds like a man who may know he is losing, 11% behind. He is for %

:13:50. > :13:54.behind on the ABC Washington post however when you say that, when you

:13:55. > :14:05.say the polling stations, what we mean, postal voting, people going

:14:06. > :14:11.in? Bribery. Rudy Giuliani eluded it may be deceased polling cards people

:14:12. > :14:18.have voted on and what is happening. But what we are doing is smearing

:14:19. > :14:25.the whole of the electoral process. If anyone takes him seriously. There

:14:26. > :14:30.was a big percentage so if the house 43% of the people going to vote for

:14:31. > :14:34.him, should Clinton win, it is a lot of people you have agitated to say

:14:35. > :14:42.this was not a true result. I would like more detail. There was no legal

:14:43. > :14:46.challenge to back up what he says. He suggests... Within 24 hours he

:14:47. > :14:52.suggested they should have drug tests. Suggested she is high on

:14:53. > :14:59.drugs. She has been ill. She might be on drugs. Saying she was pumped

:15:00. > :15:05.up at the start of the debate but she was running out of steam towards

:15:06. > :15:11.the end. We all know how that feels, I stuck the paper review all pumped

:15:12. > :15:18.up. Run out of steam. You have another one yet. Esther, John and

:15:19. > :15:21.the cat s mother will be back at 11:30pm. Cannot wait. Coming next,

:15:22. > :15:28.Meet The Author. John Banville developed as a young

:15:29. > :15:32.writer in Dublin imbibing
